Commentator Andrew Pierce noted that writer Gyles Brandreth was aware of Prince Philip’s feelings towards Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview. While speaking on Good Morning Britain (GMB) Mr Pierce insisted Prince Philip was not hostile towards the couple. He claimed Prince Philip thought Prince Harry was a good man and was fine with his decision to step down as a senior royal.

According to Mr Brandreth, Prince Philip was hopeful the pair would talk about other important issues due to their platform.

Mr Pierce said: “You would think Prince Philip would be raging about this interview.

“But Gyles Brandreth has known Prince Philip for 40 years, they worked together in the playing fields association.

“He wrote a fantastic book about Prince Philip and the Queen’s marriage and he had great access to them.

“He said Prince Philip was okay about Prince Harry going away, he has got to lead his own life.”

Mr Pierce explained how Prince Philip felt about the interview between Meghan, Harry and Oprah.

He said: “Prince Philip said he was a good man and of the interview what he said was, I don’t think they should be talking about themselves all the time.

Prince Harry is expected to be at Prince Philip’s funeral on Saturday as the Duke is reported to be in the UK quarantining

Due to being pregnant, Meghan Markle will not be joining her husband as she was reported not have been given the green light from her doctors to travel.

Tensions have been high between Prince Harry and the Royal Family, especially brother Prince William, following his interview with Oprah Winfrey.

However, the Dukes are expected to put aside their differences and walk side by side during the funeral.

US revelers wound bystanders, themselves with New Year's celebratory gunfire https://briefnews.eu/us-revelers-wound-bystanders-themselves-with-new-years-celebratory-gunfire/ https://briefnews.eu/us-revelers-wound-bystanders-themselves-with-new-years-celebratory-gunfire/#respond Wed, 02 Jan 2019 01:21:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-revelers-wound-bystanders-themselves-with-new-years-celebratory-gunfire/ The time-honored, if illegal, tradition of firing guns into the air to celebrate the New Year led to a rash of injuries on the first day of 2019 as stray bullets lodged in innocent bystanders – and even the shooters themselves.

A Cleveland, OH man shot himself in the leg trying to return his 9mm to its holster after firing it off in celebration in the middle of a field. After he was taken to the hospital, police added insult to injury by charging him with illegally discharging a firearm… and causing injury to a person. Ouch, indeed.

A Kansas City, KS man shot himself in the stomach after setting his .22 down on his couch. He hadn’t even fired off the celebratory gunshot yet. No word on if he’s been spared the indignity of criminal charges.

It’s easy to laugh at these types, because they’re only hurting themselves, but a 6-year-old girl in Oakland, CA hit in the head with a stray bullet from “celebratory gunfire” while playing in her backyard serves as a sober reminder that what goes up must come down. She is in stable condition, as is the 9-year-old Atlanta, GA boy who caught a bullet in the stomach while setting off fireworks in his front yard with his family.

In Baltimore, MD, a 14-year-old boy had a bullet graze his head while watching the holiday fireworks. The shooting was believed to be unintentional; six other shootings in the city that night weren’t, including one which left a 17-year-old dead.

A Raleigh, NC woman was hit in the chest with a falling bullet as she rang in the new year at the city’s outdoor ceremonies, where guns are very thoroughly prohibited. The bullet narrowly missed a lung, passing through her stomach before lodging in her hip. A San Leandro, CA woman was also hit with a stray bullet while standing on her balcony watching the fireworks, but did not require hospitalization.

Staying inside was no defense, either, as an Indianapolis, IN woman found out when she was hit in the stomach with a stray bullet as she celebrated in her apartment with her family. Several other Indianapolis residents reported property damage from stray bullets.

Firing guns in the air is a crime in most US jurisdictions, though the severity ranges from a class-B misdemeanor à la “disorderly conduct” (Ohio) to a felony carrying three years in prison (California). Bullets fired into the air return to earth at 300 feet per second and regularly kill people. That doesn’t stop thousands of people from firing them off, of course.

Are Japan’s Part-Time Employees Working Themselves to Death? https://briefnews.eu/are-japans-part-time-employees-working-themselves-to-death/ https://briefnews.eu/are-japans-part-time-employees-working-themselves-to-death/#respond Wed, 08 Aug 2018 12:18:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/are-japans-part-time-employees-working-themselves-to-death/ On a sunny morning in June, a middle-aged lawyer named Yoshimasa Obayashi heard his telephone ring once, and nearly ring again, before he rushed to snatch the phone’s receiver from its cradle. It was an unexpected call, from an unknown caller, who confessed that he feared he was working himself to death. In Japan, this sentiment can be expressed using a single word: Karōshi, or “death from overwork,” refers to fatalities from heart attacks, suicides, and other health issues resulting from the stress and fatigue of long hours spent on the job.

In 1988, at the height of Japan’s economic “bubble years,” a group of doctors and labor lawyers launched Japan’s first telephone hotlines dedicated to curbing karōshi. They published their office telephone numbers in pamphlets, and later online, as a means of offering free consultations to at-risk workers, who typically called the volunteer doctors, and bereaved family members, who usually reached out to lawyers like Obayashi for help with compensation claims.

During the summer of 2000, corporate bankruptcies drove hundreds of run-down salarymen to call the hotline each day. By that time, Japan’s government acknowledged just 100 to 200 karōshi cases each year, though Hiroshi Kawahito, a lawyer at the National Defense Counsel for Victims of Karōshi, told me he doesn’t believe that number. He says that given the level of secrecy on the part of employers and what he considers to have been an overly narrow government definition of karōshi at the time—which, for example, didn’t count someone as having worked to death unless they logged more than 100 hours of overtime in the month before dying—the actual number of victims might have been as high as 10,000 cases annually. (The government now uses a lower threshold of hours.)

Press reports about the karōshi epidemic helped push millions of young workers—many of them college graduates who had been offered jobs with major companies—to opt out of Japan’s deadly corporate culture, instead choosing freelance or part-time careers that allowed for a more relaxed lifestyle. It seemed like a prophylactic, of sorts, against karōshi, and indeed, until around 2008, Japan’s karōshi hotlines were used almost exclusively by full-time, salaried workers. (It was considered a shocking outlier, for example, when a young restaurant worker killed herself that year after working more than 140 hours of overtime in a single month.)

These days, though, Obayashi feels that part-time workers are increasingly at risk of karōshi. In recent years, firms have been eschewing full-time workers in favor of more flexible arrangements with recruits who work for lower wages, with less job security, which leaves them vulnerable to abuses like unpaid overtime and has forced many to take extra jobs. Since 2015, Japan’s number of workers with two or more jobs has grown by roughly 30 percent. “Today’s generation of part-time workers can’t afford to be so carefree,” Obayashi told me.

The Japanese government, which now considers people to be at risk of karōshi if they regularly work 60 hours a week or more, does not publish statistics on the working hours of part-timers with multiple jobs. In July, hoping for a clearer picture, I visited Asami Ito, a community manager at Lancers, which builds software platforms that match freelance workers with companies. According to Lancers research, some 4.5 million full-time workers in Japan have second jobs, where they work, on average, between six and 14 additional hours each week, on top of any overtime hours they clock at their primary job; a small number of them work up to 30 or 40 hours per week at their second jobs. “We’re recruiting many more ‘parallel workers,’” Ito told me, using a Lancers nickname for people with side jobs on top of full-time jobs. Ito said Lancers’s research suggests most of Japan’s workforce will be freelancers by 2027.

The fact that people are working multiple part-time jobs just to earn a living wage is surprising, given that Japan’s low birth rates have left the labor market as tight as it has been in forty years, with almost 1.6 jobs for every applicant. In the food-service industry, workers are in such short supply that McDonald’s recently resorted to an expensive advertising campaign aimed at recruiting housewives and retirees to help out with its busiest shifts. Convenience-store chains have hired more foreign workers, while small and mid-sized manufacturing companies have increasingly turned to automation. But the one recruitment strategy that hasn’t really taken hold is increasing wages.

An explanation lies partly in Prime Minister Shinzō Abe’s signature fiscal policy, known as “Abenomics,” which relies in part on using monetary policies to weaken the yen so as to make exports cheaper for foreigners—which has increased profits for Japan’s manufacturers. In theory, higher corporate profits should have led to higher wages and an increase in consumer spending. Instead, Japan’s corporations have chosen to sit on the piles of cash they’ve earned from Abe’s fiscal policy. Each spring, over the past six years of Abenomics, the leaders of Japan’s major industries have ceded remarkably little ground to unions during the annual wage negotiations known as shuntō. Workers have responded by saving what little cash they have, rather than spending it. And while a weaker yen has helped corporations increase exports, it has also made importing products and materials more expensive, which contributes to weakened buying power for Japan’s increasingly cash-strapped households. Overall, workers are spending an average of 11 percent more time to earn the same salary they were bringing home about 20 years ago, and some are working unpaid overtime on top of that. Even the most promising gains leave room for pessimism: In June, government data showed that inflation-adjusted wages rose at a pace not seen since 1997, but that was mostly due to large one-off summer bonuses

In recent years, there have been several high-profile cases of karōshi. In 2013, a 31-year-old journalist working for Japan’s national broadcaster died of heart failure after working 159 overtime hours in a single month, prompting lawmakers to pass legislation aimed at creating greater awareness of the dangers of karōshi. In 2015, a 24-year-old rookie employee at Japan’s largest advertising firm, Dentsu, took her own life under similar circumstances.

The fact that karōshi risk has spread outside Japan’s “lifetime employment” system appears to be related, in part, to a series of legislative changes. A karōshi-prevention measure set to go into effect next year will restrict overtime to 45 hours during normal months, though it allows for up to 100 overtime hours during busier months. Many workers who have come to rely on overtime wages have simply responded by taking on second jobs, according to Lancers data. That development has been helped by a separate recent decision, meant to improve labor mobility, in which Japan’s Ministry of Labor canceled a law that had prevented workers from taking a second job without the approval of their primary employer.

Jun Kobayashi, who has three service-industry jobs that keep him on his feet for as many as 70 hours most weeks, is a reluctant sort of pioneer in the new class of Japanese workers. When I met him on a damp, humid afternoon near the end of June, he barely had time for the subway ride between the job he’d worked that morning and the one he’d work that night. As we hurtled through the spiderweb of tunnels that sprawl out beneath central Tokyo, I asked Kobayashi whether his bosses forced him to work as many hours as he did. “It’s true that they really rely on me,” he said. “But if I didn’t work so many hours I wouldn’t be able to get by.”

Immigration is very bad, Europeans better watch themselves, says Trump https://briefnews.eu/immigration-is-very-bad-europeans-better-watch-themselves-says-trump/ https://briefnews.eu/immigration-is-very-bad-europeans-better-watch-themselves-says-trump/#respond Fri, 13 Jul 2018 17:11:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/immigration-is-very-bad-europeans-better-watch-themselves-says-trump/ US President Donald Trump used a joint press conference with UK Prime Minister Theresa May to excoriate Europe’s migrant problem, calling immigration “very negative” and saying that Europeans “better watch themselves.”

“I think it’s been very bad for Europe. You see the same terrorist acts I do, we see them a lot,” Trump said, speaking to reporters at PM’s countryside residence Chequers on Friday. It follows Trump’s criticism of May’s handling of Brexit a day earlier.

Trump also blasted Angela Merkel for her role in inviting millions of migrants to Europe at the height of the Syrian refugee crisis in 2015, and for the spike in migrant-committed crime that followed.

“It’s very much her (Merkel’s) Germany. I think they better watch themselves. Because you are changing culture, you are changing a lot of things, you’re changing security…it’s a very sad situation but I don’t think it’s good for our country and I don’t think it’s good for Europe,” Trump said.

After the EU was opened to an influx of migrants, almost 40 jihadist terrorist attacks have been committed successfully in Europe and countless others foiled, with 2015 the bloodiest year on record, according to Europol. Across Germany and much of Western Europe, fear of terrorism has led to a tightening of security measures, including concrete barriers in public places, and bulletproof glass around tourist attractions.

Trump used Europe’s experience to call for Democrats back in the US to support tougher border control measures. Despite the Trump administration’s recent ‘zero tolerance’ crackdown on illegal immigration, Democrats have rejected multiple bills from House Republicans, including one ‘compromise bill’ that would give some existing but undocumented immigrants a path to citizenship, but would also fund Trump’s proposed border wall and provide for tougher enforcement of immigration law.

“We have laws that are so bad we don’t even call them laws,” he said. “We virtually don’t have immigration laws.”

Trump made similar comments in an interview published by The Sun tabloid newspaper on Friday. In the interview he savaged London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s security record.

“I think he has done a very bad job on terrorism,” Trump said. “I think he has done a bad job on crime, if you look, all of the horrible things going on there, with all of the crime that is being brought in.” Trump at least partly attributed London’s ongoing crimewave to immigration from the Middle East and Africa.

On Khan’s watch, London suffered three vehicle attacks in 2017, and has recently seen a surge in knife crime, with the city’s murder rate overtaking that of New York City earlier this year.

Khan and Trump have publicly clashed ever since Trump berated Khan for saying there is “no reason to be alarmed” by an increased and armed police presence in the city in the aftermath of the London Bridge attack in June 2017. Khan previously called for Trump’s working visit to the UK to be canceled, saying that “his policies go against everything we stand for”.

“To blame this on immigration from Africa is preposterous and we should call him out when he does so,” Khan, speaking on the BBC’s Radio 4 Today programme on Friday morning, said.

At Chequers on Friday, May tempered down Trump’s tough anti-immigration rhetoric, taking a more moderate stance on immigration. She touted the UK’s “proud history of welcoming people who want to come to our country to contribute to our economy and our society.”

“What is important is that we have control of our borders, what is important is that we have a set of rules that enables us to determine who comes in to our country,” she added.

Chelsea brace themselves for Man Utd to kick-off Willian bidding war with Barcelona https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-brace-themselves-for-man-utd-to-kick-off-willian-bidding-war-with-barcelona/ https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-brace-themselves-for-man-utd-to-kick-off-willian-bidding-war-with-barcelona/#respond Sat, 30 Jun 2018 06:32:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chelsea-brace-themselves-for-man-utd-to-kick-off-willian-bidding-war-with-barcelona/

The Stamford Bridge club expect to make their move for the Brazil international, with Old Trafford chief Jose Mourinho intent on recruiting Willian this summer, and set to start a bidding war.

Mourinho is a major fan of Willian, who was one of the few Chelsea players to perform for him as his second spell at Stamford Bridge unravelled in 2015.

have though moved first for the Brazilian with a substantial bid, as they look for reinforcements following the departure of Nou Camp legend Andres Iniesta.

Willian, who has been at Stamford Bridge for five years, turns 30 in August and could be tempted to cash in if Barca’s offer is substantially increased.

The former Anzhi star impressed in Chelsea’s Champions League knockout stage clash with Barca, scoring in the 1-1 home draw before the West Londoners crashed out 4-1 on aggregate.

As with several other Chelsea players though, Willian’s future at Stamford Bridge could well depend on the intentions of incoming manager Maurizio Sarri.

The Brazilian was never a favourite of outgoing boss Antonio Conte, who dropped him for last season’s FA Cup final win over United.

But Conte is poised to be axed over the next few days to make way for former Napoli manager Sarri.

Willian, currently in Russia with Brazil, for whom he has started all three matches, has made no overtures to move from Chelsea, but with the club missing out on Champions League football next season, a switch to the Nou Camp could be tempting, as could a link up again with Mourinho.

Chelsea though would be reluctant to sell to a Premier League rival, which could leave the way open for Barcelona.

Fear and loathing: Trump aides advised to arm themselves, as leftist rage escalates https://briefnews.eu/fear-and-loathing-trump-aides-advised-to-arm-themselves-as-leftist-rage-escalates/ https://briefnews.eu/fear-and-loathing-trump-aides-advised-to-arm-themselves-as-leftist-rage-escalates/#respond Tue, 26 Jun 2018 19:49:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fear-and-loathing-trump-aides-advised-to-arm-themselves-as-leftist-rage-escalates/

As resistance to the Trump administration moves from Twitter to the streets, many on the right are anticipating that protests will turn violent. Trump’s aides, they say, should arm themselves.

Last weekend saw chanting protesters camped outside Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen’s house; White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders booted from a Virginia restaurant with her family; and Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi screamed at and spat on by a progressive mob as she tried to attend a movie in Tampa.

It also saw Democrat Rep. Maxine Waters (California) – a committed anti-Trumper who’s called for the President’s impeachment dozens of times – come out and condone public harassment of Trump officials.

“If you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd and you push back on them, and you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere,” said Waters.

The political left’s rage has spiked since news about the Trump administration’s separation of children from their illegal immigrant parents threw the President’s immigration policy into the national spotlight.

President Trump hit back at Waters, calling her “an extraordinarily low IQ person,” but to many on the right, the new-found aggression of the anti-Trump left means Republicans need to get concealed carry permits and arm up.

Trump’s 11-year-old son Barron and four-year-old granddaughter were threatened in recent days, with actor and activist Peter Fonda, in a deranged rant last week, calling for Barron to be ripped from his mother’s arms and “put in a cage with pedophiles.”

Actor and conservative Twitter commentator James Woods warned on Monday that “Violence is the next stop on the #MadMaxine slippery slope,” and encouraged right wingers to buy guns in preparation.

“There are simply not enough police in D.C. or Virginia or Maryland to protect all Trump officials at their homes and when they go out to restaurants,” John Lott told the Washington Examiner on Monday. “Getting a concealed handgun permit would be helpful to protect themselves and their family.” Lott is a conservative author and president of the pro-gun Crime Prevention Research Center, who favors citizens taking the law into their own hands.

While law-abiding citizens are allowed to apply for concealed carry permits in Washington DC and neighboring Virginia, waiting lists can be long. And while Trump officials with permits can freely stockpile weapons at home and carry a concealed pistol to the grocery store, they can’t carry in federal buildings, on public transit, or in bars or restaurants where alcohol is served.

The same week as Fonda’s threatening Twitter rant, New York-based activist Sam Lavigne trawled the professional profile website LinkedIn to identify some 1,600 people working for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the agency tasked with rounding-up and detaining illegal immigrants. Lavigne created a database that included public information like job titles and profile pictures of the officials.

After publication, the database was taken down by GitHub and Medium, who claimed it violated their community rules. Transparency organization WikiLeaks hosted the database, and several Antifa ‘resistance’ groups tweeted links to ICE agents’ profiles, children’s names and home addresses.

“It’s the public’s right to know the faces of the gestapo and who is creating, enforcing, and filling concentration camps in our name,” read a tweet from a user named Nathaniel Amirite, later retweeted by the Pacific Northwest Antifascist Workers Collective.

Amirite’s is just one of thousands of Antifa-linked Twitter accounts doxxing ICE employees, as the loose leftist collective graduates from campus politics to real-life sedition and agitation. In their mission to combat ‘nazis’ and ‘white supremacists’, Antifa groups have shifted their activities from bong hits and banner-waving to “domestic terrorist violence,” according to the Department of Homeland security.

Even before the Trump administration’s ‘zero tolerance’ immigration policy provoked the left’s anger, members of Congress on both sides had received an “unprecedented number of threats,” since a Bernie Sanders supporter shot and seriously injured Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana) at a Congressional baseball game last July.

As representatives receive death threats for their political views, House Sergeant at Arms Paul Irving pledged to provide assistance to security-conscious Congressmen and women. Since the assassination attempt on Scalise, Irving also requested a budget of $ 18 million to combat new threats, including cyberattacks. In the same time, over half of the 435 members of Congress have added extra security equipment, like alarms and panic buttons, to their district offices.

Scalise himself responded to Rep Waters’ call for harassment with a plea for decency. “Civility and respect always prevails over harassment and disrespect” he tweeted on Sunday.

However, based on the replies to Scalise’s tweet, the militant wing of the Democratic #resistance are unlikely to let up any time soon.

“Hi Steve, the world would be a better place if you had succumbed to your wounds 🙂” read a now-deleted tweet from Twitter user @alexnichols11. “Too bad you don’t have to sh*t in a bag for the rest of your life,” read another.

With even more moderate and well-known ‘progressive’ voices celebrating the public shaming of Trump staff, the political climate in the US shows no signs of cooling down.

That climate of fear is captured dramatically in a campaign video from Wisconsin Republican Senate candidate Leah Vukmir. In the video, entitled ‘Threatened’, death threats left on answering machines play as Vukmir sits at her kitchen table, pistol ready. Vukmir touts her pro-life, union-busting conservative beliefs, and boasts of the death threats she’s received for them.

While Vukmir’s video was criticized for being overly dramatic, its point is clear: Death threats from the left are now both a rite of passage for conservatives and political ammunition for Republicans looking to play up the left’s violent misbehavior in the bitter 2018 midterm campaign season.

Mark Hamill SLAMS Disney for Star Wars ‘over-saturation’ – ‘They should pace themselves’ https://briefnews.eu/mark-hamill-slams-disney-for-star-wars-over-saturation-they-should-pace-themselves/ https://briefnews.eu/mark-hamill-slams-disney-for-star-wars-over-saturation-they-should-pace-themselves/#respond Thu, 29 Mar 2018 14:04:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mark-hamill-slams-disney-for-star-wars-over-saturation-they-should-pace-themselves/

Back with the original and prequel trilogies, Star Wars fans would have to wait around three years before each new film came out.

But since Disney bought the rights in 2012, Lucasfilm has been churning out one a year.

We’ve had The Force Awakens, Rogue One, The Last Jedi and now – just five months later – Solo is arriving in May.

After that there’s Star Wars 9, two separate new trilogies, a TV show and more yet-to-be-announced spin-offs – and that’s just what’s been made public.

Disney CEO Bob Iger has even been quoted as saying Star Wars and Marvel movies “will go on forever.”

And regarding audience fatigue, he told the BBC, “No, I don’t think they’re getting weary.”

Nevertheless Star Wars legend Hamill is concerned about the potential over-saturation of Star Wars movies.

Speaking with Cinema Blend, the actor said: “I will say they should pace themselves, because you don’t want to over-saturate it.”

Hamill continued: “I said to Disney, ‘Really? Five months after we come out comes [Solo: A Star Wars Story]? Can’t you at least wait until Christmas?’

“But they’ve got things booked – they’re doing Marvel and their own movies, so that’s beyond my [purview.].”

Nevertheless the Luke Skywalker star is very open to different types of Star Wars movies, especially ones that cross genres.

He continued: “Well, there shouldn’t be [a limit to the storytelling], as it’s a canvas that’s so infinite.

“With the standalone films they can all have their own identity.”

Hamill added: “Rogue One can be gritty, and like a war film… I’m assuming, I don’t know, but I would assume that Solo will be more comedic-ly oriented because he’s a rogue, a scoundrel, and a gambler, and a womanizer and all those things.

“So I think the advantage of the standalone films is that they don’t have to follow the formula of a trilogy, so they can establish their premise, get it on, get it done and get out leaving the audience wanting more. So there’s infinite possibilities.”

Solo: A Star Wars Story will be released in UK cinemas on May 24, 2018.
