GamesBeat’s Rachel Kaser has thoughts about the heist of the year and the glimpse of GTA VI we were never meant to see.Read More

Your office is a den of thieves. Don’t take my word for it: When a forensic-accounting firm surveyed workers in 2013, 52 percent admitted to stealing company property. And the thievery is getting worse. The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners reports that theft of “non-cash” property—ranging from a single pencil in the supply closet to a pallet of them on the company loading dock—jumped from 10.6 percent of corporate-theft losses in 2002 to 21 percent in 2018. Managers routinely order up to 20 percent more product than is necessary, just to account for sticky-fingered employees.
Some items—scissors, notebooks, staplers—are pilfered perennially; others vanish on a seasonal basis: The burn rate on tape spikes when holiday gifts need wrapping, and parents ransack the supply closet in August, to avoid the back-to-school rush at Target. After a new Apple gadget is released, some workers report that their company-issued iPhone is broken—knowing that IT will furnish a replacement, no questions asked.
What’s behind this 9-to-5 crime wave? Mark R. Doyle, the president of the loss-prevention consultancy Jack L. Hayes International, points to a decrease in supervision, the ease of reselling purloined products online, and what he alleges is “a general decline in employee honesty.” The changing nature of the workplace may also bear some blame. Full-time employees now spend an average of 3.3 hours a day working from home—a fact reflected in the frequent disappearance of household items from the office. On social media, for instance, anonymous workers have confessed to stealing everything from light bulbs and toilet paper to Oreos, Windex smuggled out in a water bottle, and a fake Christmas tree. After one Reddit user expressed guilt over snatching coffee for weekend enjoyment, another poster offered a compelling rationalization: “You weren’t stealing the coffee. You were planning to work from home this weekend. Obviously you need coffee if you’re going to be working.” With the divide between apartment and cubicle blurring, taking stuff home isn’t even thought of as theft anymore, says Brian Friedman, the asset-protection director for HD Supply. “It’s [considered] an entitlement.”
You might not worry about sneaking off with the occasional package of Oreos. But David Welsh, a business professor at Arizona State University, says that even the pettiest of thefts can start workers down a crooked path. In a 2014 paper, Welsh and his co-authors concluded that peccadilloes such as taking a pen from the office tend to “snowball into larger violations” through a social-cognitive mechanism known as moral disengagement. The process is simple: Just create an internal monologue to minimize your unethical deed (It’s okay to steal this paper, because I print so many work documents at home). From there, your heists can escalate, while your self-image remains intact.
Don’t believe it? Then let me tell you about Gilberto Escamilla, the employee who stole $ 1.3 million worth of fajita meat from a juvenile-detention center in Texas. Escamilla, a correctional officer, pleaded guilty to felony theft for the scheme, which lasted nine years and included untold sums of brisket, pork chops, chicken, and sausage. At a 2018 hearing, Escamilla explained what had happened. “It started small and got bigger,” he said. “It got to a point where I couldn’t control it anymore.” The judge, unmoved, sentenced him to 50 years in prison.

Rockstar Games/Take-Two Interactive
The biggest game of 2018, “Red Dead Redemption 2,” may be the most detailed game I’ve ever played.
It’s certainly the most detailed game I’ve played since the last project from Rockstar Games, “Grand Theft Auto 5.”
The simple act of walking through mud in “Red Dead 2” becomes a sight to behold. Fighting in it — during a light rain, no less — can be downright distracting:

Each individual footstep shows up in the mud, quickly filled by nearby puddles and topped-up by the rain.
I spent more time than I’m willing to admit simply staring at the mud. How could it be so detailed? How could there possibly have been this much attention lavished on the ground?
Those stop and gawk moments were frequent while playing through “Red Dead Redemption 2” over the last week. It’s a game that, even after dozens of hours, continues to surprise me.
Here’s just some of the craziest, most impressive stuff I’ve seen:
Rockstar Games/Take-Two Interactive
There are quite a few hats in “Red Dead Redemption 2,” and even more outfit combinations. That’s to be expected in any blockbuster, character-driven game in 2018. Who doesn’t want to play dress up?
What’s not so expected is this outrageous bear head hat, which is a bear’s head — a bear you’ll kill in a relatively early mission. This hat is almost certain to become yours.
After taking the bear skin to a trapper, he’ll offer to buy your legendary bear skin. In an instant, he turns that skin into a handful of different clothing items. The one I purchased immediately, of course, was the bear head hat you see above. It looks exactly like the bear I shotgunned in a panic.
Rockstar Games/Take-Two Interactive
No matter how serious the moment, whatever silly outfit you’re wearing is the outfit your character will wear in cutscenes. This is no small thing — most games don’t bother with this level of consistency.
And that’s just the beginning.
Rockstar Games/Take-Two Interactive
The main character, and the one you’ll control throughout “Red Dead 2,” is Arthur Morgan. If you get into a fight in the mud as Arthur, he’ll get extremely muddy. When he walks into a bar, people will comment on his smell and demeanor. When he appears in a cutscene, he’ll appear as a mud-covered maniac.
There’s a level of detail consistency throughout the game that’s subtle at first, and becomes almost overwhelming as the game goes on.

Gavin Haines
September 21, 2018
These are no ordinary wells. The ‘singing wells of Namunyak’ are where Kenya’s Samburu hersdsmen go to sing love songs to their cows. Oh, and to discuss village matters, plan raids and dance with their partners. Gavin Haines gets a rare insight.
The guns, I want to know about the guns: What’s with all the AK-47s?
First, though, let’s talk about cows, which are arriving in ever-greater numbers at this dried-up riverbed in Kenya’s Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy. There are thousands of them and they’ve come to slay their thirst at the dozen or so water troughs that are scattered across the parched earth. Everything is thirsty here.
Next to each trough is a well and in each well a human chain comprised of lithe young men, who pass buckets of water up from the darkened depths to the sunny surface. The men in the wells are naked—their bodies glisten with sweat—and they are singing love songs in the Samburu tongue; not to their wives, who are washing clothes nearby, but to their cows, who are mainly mooing and pooing.
“I will always be with you, I will always be behind you—you are my lovely cows,” translates Robert Lemayian, a Samburu herdsman and tour guide, as we eavesdrop at one of the wells. “You have to let them know that you will protect them,” he adds, citing big cats as the main cause of anxiety amongst cattle.

There may be as many as 300 cows in one herd, says Robert, but every animal has a name; and when their name echoes from the well, it’s their turn to come and have a drink.
Chaperoning them to the troughs are young boys—tomorrow’s herdsmen—who have sticks and aren’t afraid to use them. Thwack. The sound of wood on hide. Thwack. And again. I’m struck by the contrast between the sweet songs of the wells and the boys’ overzealous use of their sticks.
There’s also the not-so-small matter of the AK-47s, which some men have slung over their shoulders. Soviet-made Kalashnikovs, it transpires, are the latest addition to the Samburu’s already potent arsenal, which includes a knife, spear and wooden club known as a runga.

Robert says the rifles act as a warning to enemy spies, who routinely survey the wells. Hiding in nearby bushes, they identify the herdsmen with the most cows and the least security, before returning home, in some cases walking for several days, often into neighboring Somalia, to pass on their intel. Cattle raids will likely follow.
But not if the Samburu strike first, which I’m told they often do. Indeed, many raids on enemy tribes have been plotted at these wells, which, during the dry season, draw herdsmen from far and wide.
The Samburu people, says Robert, believe they have a divine right to all cows. “Cattle are sacred to us,” he explains. “We don’t believe we are stealing livestock from other people; we believe that we are bringing home what belongs to us.”
The Samburu rarely steal cattle from each other, he says, but they will walk for many days to relieve rival tribes of their herds.
“We take anything from four to 200 cattle—it’s very violent,” says Robert, who’s wearing traditional Samburu clothing of beaded necklaces, colorful bracelets and a red and blue cloth that resembles a skirt. “We shoot to kill. We lose quite a lot of young men.”
Being at the wells and hearing these stories is a great privilege. Few tourists venture up here and those who do aren’t permitted to take photographs, which seems entirely appropriate given the intimacy of the setting.
Not living vicariously through my lens affords me the opportunity to thoroughly take it all in. I look in awe at the scene: The naked men, the colorfully-dressed women, the scrawny cows, the stick-wielding boys, the guards with AK-47s and the distant bushes that may or may not harbor enemy spies. It’s like nothing I’ve seen anywhere, ever.
Though most people seem to be working hard, the wells are also a place for play. “In the evenings, we sing and dance with our girlfriends and record it on our phones,” says Robert. “Afterwards you play it back and if it is not good, you delete it and do it again.”
The wells are also a place to exchange news; of births, marriages and deaths. “We come here to get information,” says Robert, likening the experience to reading a newspaper. “If there is a wedding happening, then you find out about it here.”

The theft of an empty turboprop plane by an airline worker at Sea-Tac International Airport who performed dangerous loops before crashing into a remote island in Puget Sound illustrated what aviation experts have long known: One of the biggest potential perils for commercial air travel is airline or airport employees causing mayhem.
Investigators are piecing together how the airline ground agent working his regular shift stole an empty Horizon Air turboprop plane, took off Friday night from Sea-Tac and fatally crashed into the a small island after being chased by military jets that were quickly scrambled.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

This week, Google is rolling out a number of new cloud security technologies aimed at making the public cloud a safer place. Among them is Shielded VMs, a feature of Google Cloud Platform that protects virtual machines from the installation of rootkits and other persistent malware, as well as other attacks that could result in data theft.
Using a cryptographically protected baseline measurement of the VM’s image, the Shielded VMs feature—launched in beta today—provides a way of “tamper-proofing” virtual machines and alerting their owners to changes in their runtime state. Shielded VMs also make it possible to prevent a virtual machine from being booted in a different context than it was originally deployed in—in other words, preventing theft of VMs through “snap-shotting” or other duplication.
Major cloud providers have been trying to blunt threats to virtual machines and cloud application containers in a number of ways—with hardened operating system images for virtual machines and with “confidential computing” models that prevent compromises of the underlying machine’s operating system from providing access, for instance.

You can use a quick, short warp to land on top of your enemy, crushing them and taking their gun for your own. Just try not to get caught up in the endless hazards of lethal flow below you as you do it.
Neo Neo aims to keep you moving, sticking you inside a temple that continuously fills up with a dangerous fluid while having colossal traps and hostile creatures constantly dogging you. The enemies offer souls you need to consume for this place, so taking them out by warping into them and stealing their gun to use for your own will go a long ways in getting that soul count (and score) up.
Also, while the enemies are returning fire, time slows when bullets are about to hit you, giving you a few precious moments to skirt to one side and prep that warp again. If that’s still not enough power for you, you can equip perks that change how you play, although many of these come with less than desirable side traits that may make them more trouble than they’re worth (or an added challenge for those who want more from the game’s generated temples).
With a pulsing visual style and vibrant colors, Neo Neo aims to drag players in with its quick weapon swaps, endless imminent dangers, and high speed shooting.
Neo Neo is available for $ 1.99 on Steam. For more information on the game and developer Sir Mr Red, you can follow them on YouTube and Twitter.
