It’s no Hollywood blockbuster, but La Yuma is a touching Nicaraguan film from 2009 that will have you rooting for this scrappy young boxer to kick some ass. Though it’s nearly a decade old, the film still feels relevant. Surprisingly, it foreshadows the present-day youth protests throughout the country against the corrupt government of President Daniel Ortega.

Yuma’s determination and grit provide all the makings of a rags-to-riches, underdog-on-top tale. Growing up in the poor neighborhoods of Managua among thieves and drug dealers has toughened young Yuma — she won’t let anybody mess with her dreams of getting out, with boxing as her ticket. A few minutes into the film, Yuma’s already on her way: Her trainer reveals she’ll be working with one of the country’s top boxing coaches, the infamous Polvorita. But it’s not this classic plotline that makes the film worth watching. Rather, it’s the quirky characters and random locations — including a male strip club — that create entertaining cinema.
Like Yuma’s boss at the clothing store. Ms. Scarlett is a stumpy, overly dramatic middle-aged woman in bright fuchsia lipstick, who constantly chastises Yuma for not dressing sexy enough. Then there’s Yuma’s boxing coach who is, inexplicably, also a male stripper on the side. Meanwhile, Yuma’s drug dealer boyfriend (or perhaps ex-boyfriend – the details are a little unclear), Culebra (“snake” in English) — a confused, heartbroken, wannabe gang banger — is tracking down her new lover and beating the crap out of him. For a good portion of the film, we watch Yuma fall in love with new boyfriend, Ernesto, a sweet but boring middle-class journalism student at the local university.
Each time someone tells Yuma that “women can’t box,” you’ll want to sock them in the face for her.
At its release, La Yuma was the first full-length fiction film to come out of Nicaragua in 20 years. Screenwriter and director Florence Jaugey, who is French-born but based in Nicaragua, left her job as an actress to begin writing, directing and producing her own films in the ’90s. When Jaugey set out to make La Yuma, there were very few resources to support the production of a feature film. But she was determined to tell the true story of contemporary Nicaragua that she observed while making documentaries. “I didn’t invent anything [for La Yuma],” Jaugey says. “I just put together the testimonies and characters I met filming.”
And while the film never gets too heavy, La Yuma does shed light on the youth protests against the crooked regime of President Daniel Ortega happening in the country today. From Yuma’s frustration with Managua’s neighborhood violence and her willingness to physically fight to escape it, to Ernesto’s desire to uncover the shady underpinnings of the Nicaraguan government, the film foreshadows the 2018 uprisings that continue to rock the country. “What’s happening in Nicaragua [today] is a pressure that exploded because the government has become less and less democratic year after year,” says Jaugey.
La Yuma can seem a bit chaotic at times — several subplots are never fully resolved and many of the characters are never developed — but it’s a charming coming-of-age story that paints a realistic picture of Nicaraguan adolescence. Each time someone tells Yuma that “women can’t box,” you’ll want to sock them in the face for her. And by the end of the film, her vindication is more than likely to bring a tear to your eye.

The Turn Back Time diet is simple to follow and doesn’t involve depriving yourself of what you like!
Hormonal fluctuations mean our bodies interact with their environment differently and what worked for us in our 20s will not necessarily work in our 40s and beyond.
This can lead to a host of problems often associated with middle age including weight gain, aches and pains, low sex drive, fatigue, poor sleep, irritability and digestive problems.
However I firmly believe it doesn’t have to be like this. As a cosmetic doctor I have spent years studying the science of ageing and what I have found is that looking and feeling your best starts on the inside.
The truth is if you make a few simple tweaks to your lifestyle you really can turn back time. And the easiest place to start is by looking at what you eat.
The truth is if you make a few simple tweaks to your lifestyle you really can turn back time. And the easiest place to start is by looking at what you eat.
There are numerous diets out there and in the UK we spend millions of pounds each year in our quest to lose weight.
Despite this the obesity problem continues to grow. This is because most diets are built on deprivation and this is unsustainable.
If you cut out foods you love and slash portion sizes you will end up hungry, lethargic and grumpy. And once you don’t feel good it won’t be long before you give up the diet for good and go back to your old ways.
So when creating the Turn Back Time diet I wanted a plan that was sensible and sustainable. I wanted a way of eating that would keep the body well and enable people to live life to the full.
This diet couldn’t be easier. There are no fancy ingredients or complicated recipes. Instead it’s about going back to basics and packing your diet with healthy, fresh, seasonal and whole foods.

A healthier diet can improve your mood
Best of all you can still have a little of what you fancy, be that a glass of wine with dinner or a sweet treat afterwards.
The first step is to get rid of processed foods and instead understand that nature provides everything you need. Then think about simple swaps you can make, such as switching from white bread to wholegrain or white rice to brown.
Below is a seven-day plan to get you started but once you’ve finished you can carry on, adapting the recipes and focusing on whole foods, lean protein and lots of vegetables.
When following the diet you can expect improved health, a healthier weight, more energy and a better mood.
The diet will also help balance your hormones which will help your body function at its optimal level.
I have included a simple workout as regular exercise is a key part of looking and feeling your best.
So why not give it a go? It’s for everyone at every age, it’s never too late to start.
● Consult your GP before starting this or any other eating plan to ensure it is suitable for you

“I don’t know if anyone remembers Ask.fm (a site where you would anonymously ask people questions), but I used to stalk my crush on it mercilessly. It was connected to Facebook, and one time I was stalking him and accidentally shared his Ask.fm profile to my Facebook page without realising. Took about half an hour for my friends to start messaging me asking why I’d done it.”

“I’m part of a uni course Facebook group chat and about a year ago we were in a lecture, and this group of people were being loud and annoying. Anyway i bitched about it to my mates on our group message, but sent the message to the course message group. Everyone part of it (like 300 students) all got a notification of my message saying something along the lines of ‘yeah i think that girls name’s Carly.’ Safe to say she wasn’t happy being talked about.”
“When you accidentally post your boyfriend’s dick pic on Facebook. I was uploading a ton of pictures and my computer froze so I went to bed, thinking it got cancelled. Woke up to find out ALL my pics had uploaded. Yup, even those ones!!”
“My cousin and I were on a holiday and ended up meeting this guy that she really hit it off with. They spent all weekend hanging out and things were looking good. Being the protective older cousin I decided to do a good old fashioned Facebook search on this guy to see what I could find, turns out he was married AND had a child! The worst part is that when I was creeping his engagement announcement I accidentally shared it to my timeline! Talk about awkward.”
“When I was in high school, a lot of my friends used Ask.fm and I wanted to join in on the fun. Since the site was anonymous, I felt gutsy and messaged a random guy that I had choir with, saying ‘did you know you’re really cute?’ To my horror, it turns out I had somehow unselected the anonymous feature so he knew it was me.”
“I took pictures in the shower to send to my (now ex) boyfriend, accidentally hit the ‘add to story’ button, then my phone shut down because the humidity from the shower was too much for it.”
“One time I was going to a choir festival, and I saw a post about it with my friend and this random dude who were both going, so thinking it was my friend that I hadn’t seen in months, I commented “I’m so excited!! I can’t wait to see you!!” but it was not my friend’s post that I commented on. IT WAS THE DUDE THAT I HAD NEVER EVEN TALKED TO.”
“It wasn’t me, but a friend I’d know since I was a kid accidentally uploaded about 10 pictures of his dick, all at different angles and measuring it to a deodorant can.”
“Once I accidentally posted a nude on Instagram! I didn’t know what to do, so i just deleted my account, with over 2000 followers!”

“I was hanging out with my best friend who didn’t have a Facebook at the time. We were talking shit on the mean girls from high school, and I let her use my phone to creep on their pages. She said she couldn’t find them, and I just assumed that they didn’t have accounts either. A couple of hours later my sister asked me what was up with my posts on Facebook. It turns out my friend wasn’t searching for their pages, she was updating my status with their individual names. So I had a different post for every person she tried to search for. I died a little on the inside that day.”

“Back in the olden days, before smartphones were popular, we used to post statuses to Facebook through text messages. My phone at the time had a favourite number list, and my boyfriend at the time and Facebook were right next to each other. I was sending him some risqué photos one night, and someone texted me and asked why I’d posted my tits on Facebook. I had to run to the computer to log on and delete.”
– nirvanaa
“I was stalking this girl me and my friend hate and I took a screenshot of a post and DM’d it to my friend, right? Wrong. I sent it to the girl, along with the caption: ‘man that was pretty bitchy amiright? I’m starting to hate her more and more” and she then blocked me.”
“My fiancé and I were talking about a girl we semi-knew in high school and how we thought she lived in the new town we moved to. I went on her Facebook to see and started to casual creep and accidentally tagged myself in an OLD picture of hers and did not realise until 3 days later. I have deactivated my account out of embarrassment.”
“I had a messy friendship ‘break-up’ with a girl I had been friends with for years. She was always so obsessed with getting loads of likes on her social media, so me being the petty person I am decided to go through all of her photos and unlike them. It wasn’t until I got to the end of her profile pictures that I realised that I had stopped unliking them and actually liking them!”
“This didn’t happen to me but it’s too good to not share. A friend of mine was talking to a guy that she followed on Instagram. One day he posted a picture of himself, so she DM’d that same picture to him with the heart-eyes emoji. But it turns out she actually DM’d the picture and emoji to another guy she previously talked to. The other guy immediately responded with ‘what the fuck??'”
“I was having a little sexting session with someone on Instagram and opened the camera in the DM to send a video of me cumming. Turns out I wasn’t in the DMs anymore, I had uploaded it to Instastory for everyone to see. I panicked, closed the app, reopened it , but the video was still uploading. I turned off my phone, checked Insta on my iPad, and the Instastory had uploaded with my jizz shooting everywhere. I deleted it right in that second (note it was around 2am so I was hoping most people are asleep anyway). A minute passes by, got the first message saying ‘I don’t think you meant to share it with everyone.””

“I lost my dad this week. He was 92 years old, he had a good, long life. He lived his life exactly how he wanted: he was Christian Science his entire life. He never had medicine his whole life, never went a doctor. I never had a vaccination, we never had medicine growing up. He was very proud of me, he loved this show. He was a kind man, very accepting man. There was not one bone of judgement in his body. He was very funny, I think my brother Vance and I got his sense of humor from him.”

I got my PetCube about a month after getting my first cat. I was going through pet-parent stress over leaving her alone all day. PetCube has a 1080p HD video, 138˚wide-angle view, night vision, 3x digital zoom, and two-way audio to help you best interact with your critter. And they all work seriously well. This app-enabled device is compatible with Alexa and allows you to play with your pets wherever you are. The majority of the time I use PetCube while I’m waiting for my train on the subway. I open the app, use the mic to wake up my cats (because I now have two since I got it), and then move the laser around and watch them chase it! It also allows you to let others connect to your “channel” so that they can play with your cats too. Which is maybe kind of creepy, but I think it is adorable and awesome. It seriously makes my day to be able to pull out my phone and play with my cats when I’m on vacation or just not home. All the love to this one.
Promising Review: “I love it! It’s so sleek and small, and the wide angle of the lens gives great coverage! The image is beautiful, and is so impressive in the dark. I got this to help the eldest of my three kitty boys, as our recent move has him a little out of sorts when I am away at work. So far, all three seem to get a kick out of it.” —Erin
It was very easy to set up, and the companion application is fantastic, too.

I have never played this (seems p fun, though), so I will leave the explaining to the game’s creators: “In this highly-strategic, kitty-powered version of Russian Roulette, players draw cards until someone draws an Exploding Kitten, at which point they explode, they are dead, and they are out of the game — unless that player has a Defuse card, which can defuse the Kitten using things like laser pointers, belly rubs, and catnip sandwiches. All of the other cards in the deck are used to move, mitigate, or avoid the Exploding Kittens.”
Promising review: “This game is awesome. It is really quick to learn and is fun for the whole family. Once you learn it you realize that there really is some strategy to winning. The more my family and friends play the game the better we all get and the better the games get. The games go pretty quickly so its not time consuming to play but go long enough for you to really get into it. What is really awesome is that the game is scale-able. While one box will allow for up to five players, you can add another box and double the number of players. Overall great game that the family will play for a long time to come.” —A. James
