A former technical adviser to the January 6 committee said texts former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows turned over provide "irrefutable" proof of a plot to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Denver Riggleman, a former Republican congressman, made the comment during an interview with CBS News' "60 Minutes" on Sunday. He said Meadows' texts showed a "roadmap" for how allies of former President Donald Trump were trying to overturn the election.

"It showed actually the evolution of the beginning arguments from alternate electors all the way through rally planning, all the way to day of," he said.

Host Bill Whitaker asked Riggleman to confirm his belief that Meadows' texts "provide irrefutable, time-stamped proof of a comprehensive plot at all levels of government to overturn the election."

Riggleman responded affirmatively: "Irrefutable. Early in the text messages they were talking about alternate electors, you know, I think as soon as November 5th or November 6th."

 

Whitaker went on to note the many text messages Meadows had received in the days after the election, including one from Donald Trump Jr. in which he explained an alternate electors plan that would allow his father to win pending Congress's actions on January 6.

Meadows, who was Trump's chief of staff from 2020 to 2021, was also receiving texts about how to address the "stolen" election from people like MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell and GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Insider previously compiled a list of all the texts Meadows had received while the January 6 insurrection was unfolding.

"The Meadows text messages show you an administration that was completely eaten up with a digital virus called QAnon and conspiracy theories: an apocalyptic, messianic buffoonery. You can look at the text messages as that roadmap, but it's also a look into the psyche of the Republican party today," Riggleman said.

Riggleman noted it's unclear if Meadows turned over all of his relevant texts but said "what we got is pretty valuable."

A lawyer for Meadows did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Strzok, the former deputy assistant director for counterintelligence of the FBI, and his lover FBI attorney Liza paged exchanged texts that showed their negative attitude to Donald Trump among other things  while he was on the teams investigating Hillary Clinton and Trump. He even served on Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team, until he was reassigned following the discovery of text messages between him and Page, a FBI attorney who has since resigned.

“This decision should be deeply troubling to all Americans,” Goelman said in a statement released on Monday, adding that the bureau’s deputy director had “overruled” the FBI’s Office of Professional Responsibility concerning Strzok’s case.

Strzok’s firing comes just days after President Donald Trump took to Twitter to denounce  him and other FBI officials as “clowns and losers” who have tarnished the reputation of the bureau.

Somewhere: The Vault Papers teases the possibility of an immense conspiracy unfolding — but the only way you can find out more is through texting. French developer Norseman Interactive has teamed up with publisher Playdius on its debut messaging-based narrative mobile game. It launches March 8 on iOS for $ 3, with an Android release to come at a later date.

The player must guide Cat, a journalist who’s been investigating a whistleblower’s claims. At the start of Somewhere, she texts you on accident and from then on, you must help her make decisions to stay alive when people begin pursuing her. Depending on your choices, the game has six different endings to unlock.

The story progresses in real-time, much like other mobile games that have mimicked text conversations such as The Pixel Hunt’s Bury Me, My Love, which details the struggles of Syrian refugees escaping to Europe, and Three Minute Games’s astronaut thriller Lifeline. However, Norseman Interactive has added another mechanic to the mix: You’ll also have to open up Google Maps to help Cat at certain points in the game.

Mobile texting games evoke a certain sense of true immersion. The games’ user interfaces often imitate real messaging apps, which can make the stories feel even more intense. Somewhere’s inclusion of Google Maps adds yet another parallel to the way folks commonly use their phones. It also incorporates some elements from alternate reality games (ARGs) as players will occasionally have to search for clues on the internet to solve puzzles.

Peter Strzok, the counterintelligence veteran who has been at the center of Republicans’ claims of bias at the FBI against President Donald Trump, also played a key role in the FBI’s decision to reopen the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s email use as secretary of state, just 11 days before the 2016 election, CNN reported Wednesday. 

CNN said Strzok co-wrote the first draft of the letter that former FBI Director James Comey disclosed to the public in October 2016, announcing that the FBI had recovered thousands of Clinton’s emails and, as a result, would relaunch the probe into whether the then-Democratic presidential nominee should be criminally charged.

  • Questions about the integrity of the FBI, Department of Justice, and special counsel Robert Mueller intensified this week.
  • The revelation that the FBI was not able to save 50,000 text messages exchanged between FBI officials accused of expressing opposition to President Donald Trump has fueled speculation among Republicans that the investigation is biased against the president.
  • Republicans are also clamoring for Trump to authorize the release of a secret memo that they say proves former President Barack Obama abused surveillance laws.

Republicans’ criticism of the FBI hit a fever pitch this week amid reports that 50,000 texts between two FBI employees who wrote anti-Trump messages to each other went missing because of a software glitch on Samsung phones.

“Where are the 50,000 important text messages between FBI lovers Lisa Page and Peter Strzok? Blaming Samsung!” Trump said in a tweet Wednesday.

In a letter sent last week to Republican Sen. Ron Johnson, Stephen Boyd, the assistant attorney general for legislative affairs at the Department of Justice, said that the FBI’s system was not able to preserve messages between Strzok and Page that were sent between December 16, 2016, and May 17, 2017. The content of the texts from those five months would have likely provided lawmakers with a clearer picture of the nature of the two FBI employees’ involvement in the Russia investigation.

Special counsel Robert Mueller removed Strzok from his investigative team after texts with Page, a senior FBI lawyer, surfaced last year showing Strzok making disparaging remarks about Trump. Strzok, who also played a critical role in exonerating Hillary Clinton in the FBI’s investigation of her use of a private email server, was demoted to another department at the bureau last summer.

Now that his texts with Page aren’t available for lawmakers to see, some Republicans are ramping up attacks against the FBI. Others, including Trump’s lawyers, have taken it a step further. They want a second special counsel to formally investigate anti-Trump bias and potential corruption within the FBI, DOJ, and Mueller’s investigative team.

“First the IRS destroyed emails pivotal to our investigation of their political targeting. Now the FBI ‘failed to preserve’ texts between Peter Strzok & Lisa Page following the ’16 election,” tweeted Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, who sits on the House and Judiciary and Oversight committees. “The time for a second special counsel is now.”

Trump administration officials have tried to clarify the president’s feelings towards the FBI, even as he continues to slam the Russia investigation, which he has called a “hoax” and a “witch hunt.”

During the White House press briefing Wednesday, press secretary Sarah Sanders said that Trump has “100% confidence” in FBI Director Wray as well as in the rank-and-file of the FBI. Trump’s criticism, she insisted, is only aimed at “a few bad actors,” although she declined to state names.

Secret memo shocks Republicans, underwhelms Democrats

Devin Nunes, to release a memo that outlines purported illegal surveillance during the transition period against then-President-elect Trump by President Barack Obama’s administration.

The Twitter hashtag #ReleaseTheMemo has been trending on social media, pressuring Trump to give disclosure of the memo a green light.

Trump, who famously tweeted in the early months of his presidency that he “just found out that Obama had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower just before the victory,” has led the charge in questioning the credibility of US intelligence agencies.

Last month, he claimed the FBI’s reputation was “in Tatters – worst in History!”

The tweet then prompted FBI Director Christopher Wray, whom Trump appointed to replace James Comey, to respond, albeit indirectly, to the president’s comments.

“There is no shortage of opinions out there,” Wray said during a hearing on Capitol Hill. “The FBI that I see is people, decent people, committed to the highest principles of dignity and professionalism and respect.”

Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced on Monday that Peter Strzok, the FBI official ousted from the Russia probe over anti-Trump text messages he exchanged with FBI lawyer Lisa Page had exchanged text messages with Page more than 50,000 times.

Sessions said in a statement provided to Fox News that the matter is being investigated in light of earlier revelations that the FBI failed to preserve five months worth of text messages shared between Strzok and Page.

“We will leave no stone unturned to confirm with certainty why these text messages are now not available to be produced and will use every technology available to determine whether the missing messages are recoverable from another source,” Sessions, who recused himself from the Russia investigation, said on Monday.

Strzok and Page have been the focus of fierce condemnation from Trump’s allies in Congress and in the media, who have sought to frame the Russia investigation as politically biased against the president.

The matter has prompted calls for a second special counsel to investigate potential bias against Trump among the prosecutors participating in the probe of Russia’s US-election interference being led by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Mueller, who is a registered Republican, was quick to remove Strzok from the Russia investigation, but has nonetheless faced blistering rebukes from Trump’s allies, many of whom have, at turns, called for Mueller’s firing and floated the idea of purging the FBI of agents suspected of opposing Trump.

House representatives Bob Goodlatte of Virginia, Trey Gowdy of South Carolina, and Devin Nunes of California raised alarms about the developments in a statement that read in part: “The contents of these text messages between top FBI officials are extremely troubling in terms of when certain key decisions were made by the Department of Justice and the FBI, by whom these decisions were made, and the evident bias by those in charge of the investigation.”

“Rather than clearing up prior FBI and DOJ actions, these recently produced documents cause us to further question the credibility and objectivity of certain officials at the FBI,” the statement read.

Experts have scoffed at such public questioning of the FBI’s credibility, Business Insider’s Sonam Sheth reported earlier Monday.

Those experts pointed out that the Strzok-Page text messages don’t change the facts and evidence already produced in the Russia probe, which seeks to shed light on interference from Moscow in the 2016 US election and determine whether the Trump campaign cooperated with Russia.

“Are you serious?” Susanna snapped. “Oh my goodness. I’m with Nadia on this.”

A shocked Ben replied: “But it’s an aubergine! What’s the implication?” 

After a later advert break, he said he was “still reeling” from the revelation that the aubergine should not be used on social media. 

“I’m never going to be able to look at an aubergine again,” he said.

It came after he admitted to “micro-cheating” with viewers as he cheekily told Susanna and Kate Garraway that he was sending them winking emojis on Twitter. 

“I’m liking their tweets, they’re sending me little winks,” Ben commented. “I’m in big trouble if this is a real thing.”
