  • An official attempted to serve Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton with a subpoena.
  • But Paxton fled his home in his wife's truck to avoid being served, an affidavit says.
  • The process server said he shouted out but Paxton ignored him and continued to flee.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton fled his home when faced with a subpoena following a lawsuit by abortion rights groups, according to an affidavit by the man trying to serve it.

According to the affidavit, first obtained by the Texas Tribune, Paxton escaped in a truck driven by his wife, Texas state Sen. Angela Paxton after the process server, Ernesto Martin Herrera, arrived at his home.

The subpoena required Paxton to give evidence Tuesday in a lawsuit filed by several abortion rights groups, who are seeking protections against legal threats made against them for helping women travel to other states to get abortions.

Texas has enacted tough new restrictions on abortion following the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the Roe v. Wade ruling earlier this year.

In his affidavit, Herrera said he parked outside Paxton's address on Monday and saw a man he recognized as Paxton. He approached the front door and saw him turn around and walk away when he saw Herrera.

The door was answered by Sen. Paxton, who said her husband was on the phone and in a "hurry to leave."

Herrera said he had already spotted Paxton inside the house, so he went and waited for an hour.

He then saw Paxton emerging from a garage, but when Herrera called out Paxton's name, he "RAN back inside the house," Herrera said in the affidavit.

Shortly after, Sen. Paxton emerged from the property, got into a black truck parked in front of the house, and opened the passenger side back door, at which point "Mr. Paxton ran from the door inside the garage towards the rear door behind the driver side," said Herrera.

The process server added: "I approached the truck, and loudly called him by his name and stated that I had court documents for him. Mr. Paxton ignored me and kept heading for the truck."

Herrera said he left the subpoena documents by the truck, but the Paxtons sped away "leaving the documents on the ground."

Responding on Twitter to media reports about the incident, Paxton, who is is up for re-election in November's mid-terms, said he fled because he feared for his family over a "stranger lingering outside my home."

He said: "The media wants to drum up another controversy involving my work as Attorney General, so they're attacking me for having the audacity to avoid a stranger lingering outside my home and showing concern about the safety and well-being of my family."

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) speaks during the America First Agenda Summit, at the Marriott Marquis hotel July 26, 2022 in Washington, DC.

  • Ted Cruz was met with a booing audience when he said his plan to stop school shootings is putting more police in schools.
  • Cruz commented on gun control efforts and the Uvalde school shooting at the Texas Tribune Festival.
  • A responsive audience jeered at Cruz at some points, demanding age restrictions on assault weapons.

Sen. Ted Cruz was met with boos from a Texas audience when he said that his plan to combat school shootings is placing more police officers in schools.

Cruz spoke about guns and other contentious topics at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin on Saturday, where he was met with a responsive audience.

"Whenever you have a mass murder … you have Democrats in Washington, the step they immediately go to is we need to take away firearms from law-abiding citizens," Cruz said, prompting sparse applause. "OK, you can clap for that except for the minor problem that it doesn't work. If the objective is to stop these crimes, gun control is singularly ineffective."

Cruz argued that gun control measures punish "law-abiding citizens" instead of criminals, though the audience seemed to disagree with him at some points.

"If you want to stop crime," Cruz said, "you target the bad guys. You target the criminals, the felons, the fugitives. You prosecute them, you put them in jail, you get them off the streets, and you also enhance security at vulnerable targets."

Cruz has made similar comments before in defense of the National Rifle Association, which he said "stands up for the rights of every American," Business Insider previously reported. Cruz has received the most donations from gun rights groups among other Texas lawmakers, according to Axios.

"Two weeks ago, I stood on the Senate floor and tried to pass legislation I've introduced that would double the number of police officers in school," Cruz said to a crowd of boos. "If we want to keep our kids safe, and I desperately want to keep our kids safe, the most effective step we can do is to have police officers there to protect them who can intercept a mass murderer before he gets into the school and stop them."

Cruz was met with more yells from the audience, this time specifically about the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, in May that left 19 elementary schoolers and two teachers dead. A total of 376 law enforcement officers responded to the shooting, though the gunman remained at large for over an hour. An interim report on the police response found that responding officers "failed to prioritize saving the lives of innocent victims over their own safety," Insider previously reported.

Cruz said that the Uvalde shooter was successful in his efforts because he was able to get into the school through an unlocked door, but members of the audience continued to yell back at him.

"Look, if you have a solution to stop the deranged evil murderers, I'd love to hear it. My solution is to throw them in jail," Cruz said. "Stop them before they commit these crimes. There are some we won't know about beforehand, and the single best step to stop them is to have armed officers on campus that can stop them before they kill our kids."

"But look, instead you guys can instead sing kumbaya with them and hope they'll just stop, but what you're proposing doesn't work," Cruz added.

"Eighteen-year-old boys don't need an AR-15," someone from the audience yelled, prompting applause.

  • The remarks by a DeSantis spokesperson came after a county sheriff in Texas announced he had opened a criminal investigation into the matter.
  • Last week, 50 migrants were flown to Martha's Vineyard in a move orchestrated by DeSantis.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' office said that the dozens of migrants that he had flown to the Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard are better off than they would have been in Texas after a Texas county sheriff announced that he had launched a criminal investigation into the matter.

Last week, about 50 migrants were taken on two chartered planes from Texas to Martha's Vineyard in a controversial move orchestrated by DeSantis.

The Republican governor's spokesperson Taryn Fenske said in a statement shared with Insider that immigrants were "more than willing" to leave Bexar County, Texas, "after being abandoned, homeless, and 'left to fend for themselves.'"

"Florida gave them an opportunity to seek greener pastures in a sanctuary jurisdiction that offered greater resources for them, as we expected," Fenske said.

Fenske added that unless the Massachusetts National Guard "has abandoned these individuals, they have been provided accommodations, sustenance, clothing and more options to succeed following their unfair enticement into the United States, unlike the 53 immigrants who died in a truck found abandoned in Bexar County this June."

The remarks came in response to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office opening an investigation into the transport of migrants to Martha's Vineyard.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, a Democrat, said that the migrants were "lured" with "promises of a better life."

The Bexar County Sheriff's Office said that the migrants "were ultimately left to fend for themselves in Martha's Vineyard."

Tesla’s Texas Gigafactory made its 10,000th Model Y SUV https://briefnews.eu/teslas-texas-gigafactory-made-its-10000th-model-y-suv/ https://briefnews.eu/teslas-texas-gigafactory-made-its-10000th-model-y-suv/#respond Sun, 18 Sep 2022 10:42:02 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/teslas-texas-gigafactory-made-its-10000th-model-y-suv/ Tesla has crossed another significant manufacturing milestone. As caught by Electrek, the automaker shared on Saturday that its Texas Gigafactory recently produced its ten thousandth Model Y SUV. The achievement could be good news for those hoping to buy a Cybertruck next year. Tesla plans to build the pickup truck primarily in Texas. The automaker initially expected to begin volume production in 2021 but then delayed the Cybertruck to 2022 and then 2023.

According to multiple reports, one of the reasons Tesla’s next EV hasn’t arrived yet is due to a bottleneck related to the company’s next-generation 4680 battery cells. In 2020, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the technology would lead to electric vehicles that cost less than cars with combustion engines. At that point, however, Tesla and battery partner Panasonic had yet to produce the cells at scale, and it was only this past June that they looked ready for a production surge.

That’s why the Model Y milestone is interesting. In April, Tesla began selling a new variant of the SUV that features 4680 battery cells. It can travel 279 miles on a single charge and starts at $ 59,990. On Saturday, Tesla didn’t say how many of the new Standard Range AWD variants it has produced to date. However, Electrek estimates the Texas Gigafactory is currently manufacturing more than 1,000 Model Y vehicles every week and that the plant is likely on track to begin making 2,000 units every seven days.

A bus contractor hired by Texas Gov. • Texas has bused thousands of migrants to east coast cities over the past few months.
  • A contractor busing the migrants has been banned from speaking with New York City officials, the AP reported.
  • The lack of communication complicates non-profit groups efforts to meet and help those arriving.

A contractor hired by Texas to bus migrants signed an agreement that bans them from talking to New York officials, the Associated Press reported.

Manuel Castro, commissioner of the New York City Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs, told the AP that complicates efforts to meet and provide resources for migrants being sent from Texas.

"It's a problem because we don't know when the buses are coming, how many buses are coming, if anyone on these buses has medical conditions that they will need help with, if they need a wheelchair,"Castro told the outlet. "We at least want to know that so that we can best help people as they arrive."

Volunteer groups rely in tips for help as they wait for hours in New York's Port Authority for buses from Texas to arrive.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has been sending buses of migrants to democratic cities like Washington D.C. and New York to President Joe Biden's immigration policies.

Following in Abbott's footsteps, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis took responsibility for flying 50 migrants to Martha's Vineyard this week.

The AP reported that so far about 8,000 migrants were bused from Texas to Washington D.C. and another 2,200 were bused to New York City.

While some migrants told the AP they were grateful for the help they received to reach East Coast cities, the New York Times reported that the influx has meant that the volunteer and non-profit groups helping these migrants have been overwhelmed, and many migrants are ending up in homeless shelters.

In a statement to the AP, Abbott's office dismissed criticism of the lack of communication.

"Instead of complaining about fulfilling their sanctuary city promises, these Democrat hypocrites should call on President Biden to do his job and secure the border — something the president continues failing to do," spokeswoman Renae Eze said Thursday.

Uber Eats and Nuro are making autonomous food deliveries in Texas and California https://briefnews.eu/uber-eats-and-nuro-are-making-autonomous-food-deliveries-in-texas-and-california/ https://briefnews.eu/uber-eats-and-nuro-are-making-autonomous-food-deliveries-in-texas-and-california/#respond Fri, 09 Sep 2022 07:17:55 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/uber-eats-and-nuro-are-making-autonomous-food-deliveries-in-texas-and-california/ More Uber Eats customers would be getting their orders from vehicles with no delivery personnel in sight. That's because Uber has signed a 10-year partnership with Nuro to use its autonomous, electric vehicles to deliver food orders in the US. They'll start in Houston, Texas and Mountain View, California this fall before eventually expanding their service to the greater Bay Area.

According to TechCrunch, customers won't get to choose and won't even know if their order is being delivered by a Nuro bot when they make their purchase. That also means they'll be charged the same rates for delivery regardless of what the delivery method is. Also, they'll get a refund for their tip if they choose to give one via the app and a Nuro vehicle shows up instead of a human worker. They do have to walk outside to get their order themselves, though, and that could be quite a hassle in the rain.

Based on the video the companies released to show what a Nuro delivery would look like, customers would have to key in a code to open the vehicle door and get their order. Nuro introduced its third-gen delivery vehicle, which comes with an external airbag to protect pedestrians, earlier this year. Since it has yet to formally launch its new vehicle model, it will initially use its second-gen cars called the R2 for the partnership. The R2 was designed to be completely driverless and is equipped with 360-degree and thermal cameras, lidar and radar to effectively navigate roads on its own.

Nuro's vehicles have been making deliveries in Houston since 2019 for other companies like Walmart. In California, it was granted the state’s first Autonomous Vehicle Deployment Permit in 2020, giving it the authority to operate a commercial autonomous vehicle service. As TechCrunch notes, that would allow Nuro to receive a fee for every Uber Eats delivery in the state.

Nuro isn't the only autonomous delivery firm Uber Eats has an agreement with. The food delivery service launched a pilot with Motional in May for orders in Santa Monica, California, though those deliveries made by an autonomous vehicle will still have a safety driver behind the wheel. Uber Eats also launched a pilot service with sidewalk delivery firm Serve Robotics in the same month for short delivery routes in West Hollywood.

A severely immunocompromised adult who tested positive for monkeypox has died in Texas, marking the first US death connected to the global outbreak, state health officials said Tuesday.

Such deaths have been a rarity in the public health emergency. While the global case count is nearing 49,000, the World Health Organization has only recorded 15 monkeypox-related deaths. In the US, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have tallied 18,101 cases as of August 29. The death in Texas is the first linked to the cases.

For now, health officials are not yet sure if monkeypox was the cause of the person’s death. The adult died on August 28 in Harris County, which includes Houston. Harris County officials said in a news release that an autopsy is in process, and the results will be released in the next few weeks.

Pretty Little Liars’ Keegan Allen Joins The CW’s Walker as the Texas Ranger’s Gay, Conservative Younger Brother https://briefnews.eu/pretty-little-liars-keegan-allen-joins-the-cws-walker-as-the-texas-rangers-gay-conservative-younger-brother/ https://briefnews.eu/pretty-little-liars-keegan-allen-joins-the-cws-walker-as-the-texas-rangers-gay-conservative-younger-brother/#respond Wed, 19 Feb 2020 23:30:06 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/pretty-little-liars-keegan-allen-joins-the-cws-walker-as-the-texas-rangers-gay-conservative-younger-brother/

The CW’s Walker, Texas Ranger reboot just got a little prettier. Keegan Allen, best known for playing Toby Cavanaugh on Pretty Little Liars, has boarded the new series — simply titled Walker — as the younger brother of Jared Padalecki’s character, Variety reports.

Padalecki stars as Cordell Walker, “a widower and father of two with his own moral code who returns home to Austin after being undercover for two years, only to discover there’s harder work to be done at home.”

Allen’s character, Liam Walker, is a gay conservative who was just promoted to assistant district attorney. Per his official description, “Liam has always stayed close to home, often sacrificing his personal life in favor of his family duties. In Walker’s absence, he stepped up to take Walker’s kids under his wing. Liam’s close relationship with Walker’s son and daughter makes Walker slightly jealous.”

As previously reported, Padalecki and Allen will be joined by Lindsey Morgan (The 100) as Micki, Walker’s new partner.

Walker was one of several pilots recently ordered to series for The CW’s 2020–2021 season. The other was Superman & Lois, starring Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch in the title roles.

A Million Little Things Recap: Will Katherine Put the ‘Ex’ in Texas? https://briefnews.eu/a-million-little-things-recap-will-katherine-put-the-ex-in-texas/ https://briefnews.eu/a-million-little-things-recap-will-katherine-put-the-ex-in-texas/#respond Fri, 25 Oct 2019 02:07:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-million-little-things-recap-will-katherine-put-the-ex-in-texas/

RELATED STORIES

Clear eyes, full heart, can’t move.

That’s the gist of Katherine’s mindset in this week’s A Million Little Things. The emotionally conflicted lawyer wants to relocate with her (formerly) cheating husband and son and make a fresh start in Texas… but she knows she can’t, because Eddie has vowed to be an integral part of his infant daughter’s Massachusetts-based life.

What’s a bummed-out lawyer to do? How about a little role play and closet sex?

In other less-than-ideal couples news, Maggie and Eric continue to grow closer, and Gary continues to grow suspicious of them. Read on for the highlights of “Austin.”

HEADING WEST? | When a question about woolly mammoths and pterodactyls comes up during Theo’s bedtime, Katherine asks Eddie to fetch her iPad and look up the correct answer. But what he sees causes an Ice Age in his belly: Her browser displays searches for law jobs and homes for sale in Austin, Texas. Eddie is supremely bothered by the idea of his wife moving to the Lone Star State, but he says nothing.

Correction: He says nothing to her. But he spills all of his worries to Gary and Rome while visiting Rome’s Lexus commercial shoot. “You’ve gotta talk to her about this!” Rome urges his friend. “Or, produce a commercial about the exact situation you’re not talking about, then have her visit the set,” Gary snarks. He’s referring to how Rome did precisely that with Gina, who did not know until she arrived on set that he’d rewritten the car ad so it featured a married couple who discussed their reproductive change of heart while sitting in a dealership.

A Million Little Things Recap Season 2 Episode 5“How could you not run that by me?” Gina later asks, still angry but holding it down so she and Rome can have a celebratory anniversary lunch with his parents at Someday. To mark 50 years together, Rome’s father gives his mother the Alaskan cruise she’s always wanted… but he’s so negative about the whole thing that they fight and he leaves.

Papa Howard eventually apologizes in grand fashion — and wearing the dress uniform in which Mama Howard first fell in love with him, no less — but the whole incident makes Regina think. After Rome apologizes for the commercial, she says she wants to have a long marriage with him, but “I don’t want you to resent me, and I don’t want to resent you.” The solution, they both agree, is that they have to talk.

A million little things recap season 2 episode 5 austinA MINOR KEY | If that sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the advice Gary dished out earlier… and could stand to apply to his own relationship. Maggie skips out on their breast-cancer-survivor support group, saying she’s got to stage her apartment with Delilah so they can get someone in there. But the other women at the group tell Gary what he already knows: Maggie just doesn’t want to be there, and she’s figuring out her own way through the complicated emotions that surviving a fatal disease can bring up. “She wants to move on,” one woman tells him.

Meanwhile, Maggie does stage the apartment with D, but that turns into talking about Chad’s heart, and that turns into her walking into Eric’s music shop and sobbing so hard about missing her brother that Eric immediately takes her into his arms.

When she’s calmed, she tells him about her love for playing the piano but admits she hasn’t played since she got sick. He encourages her to go to an open mic night at a local piano bar, and even volunteers to sit in the front row “so you don’t get stage fright,” the way Chad used to when she was growing up. We also learn that Eric doesn’t play an instrument, and he took over the shop — which belonged to his fiancée, Chloe — after she died.

Gary and Maggie do connect at home, later, but things are weird between them. “I want you to tell me what’s going on. Are we OK?” he asks, adding that she feels “very far away.” He says he wants to help her figure out who she is without cancer, but she gently turns him down, saying, “I love you. This is something I need to do myself.”

Later, some tricky camera work makes us think Maggie is performing Pete Townshend’s “Let My Love Open the Door” at the piano bar, with Eric up front as promised — something that seems to irk Gary when he shows up after seeing an event flier that Maggie left in their kitchen. (He also found the folder of Maggie’s funeral instructions, leftover from her illness, which she’d reviewed earlier before tossing in the trash.) But Mags is actually playing for herself, in her old apartment (with some dramatic lighting): She never went to the club.

A million little things recap season 2 episode 5 austinPICTURE IMPERFECT | Over at the Dixon household, Delilah calls the family photographer (hi, Spin City and pretty much every other show’s Richard Kind!) and asks him to take a new shot of them for Charlotte’s birth announcement. The photographer doesn’t know Jon died, and he takes the news hard. But he shows up… just in time for Danny to decide that he doesn’t want to be part of a new family shot that doesn’t include Jon. Eventually, Delilah summons all of their friends — and Gary’s dog, Colin — and they take a big group shot of their family, which she uses on the cards.

GET READY FOR LIFTOFF | But what about Katherine and Texas? When Eddie confronts her about what he saw on the iPad, she immediately cops to thinking about a cross-country move. She wants to give their relationship a go somewhere that not everyone knows about their marital woes. But she also knows that he can’t and won’t leave Charlotte behind, so she’s resigned herself to staying put.

As a consolation prize, Eddie takes her to attend an open house at the home across the street from theirs. (Side note: Yes, really.) While there, they pretend to be “Edward,” an astronaut, and “Kat.” They spin yarns about their life to the unsuspecting realtor. And when the agent goes downstairs for a few minutes, Kat gets Edward’s rocket to blast off in the master bedroom’s walk-in closet.

Back at home, Eddie walks Katherine to her bedroom door, kisses her goodnight and tells her he loves her. Then, although he clearly doesn’t want to, he goes to sleep in another room.

Now it’s your turn. What did you think of the episode? Hit the comments!

The would-be pimp was arrested upon returning from Morocco after a tip by family.

Amber Michelle Parker, a 37-year-old reading teacher at Mexia Independent School District, was arrested on Wednesday in a joint operation led by Freestone County and McLennan County Sheriff Offices.

Detectives had been on Parker’s trail for months before taking her into custody on charges of trafficking and a conspiracy to traffic a minor. Police searched Parker’s electronic devices and her phone.

The investigators allege that the woman, who was teaching 8th graders, was busy negotiating a price to sell her teenage relative to a group of men in Morocco when free from her school duties. In a bid to hike up a price tag for the girl, Parker advertised her “merchandise” as a virgin, posting explicit photos of the girl in lingerie online.

The parties were apparently finalizing the terms of the deal when police finally placed Parker in handcuffs.

The woman took the trouble to travel to Morocco right before Christmas and returned on January 1, with officers already waiting for her.

The sick plot was foiled after relatives of the girl sounded the alarm over Parker’s persistent attempts to take the girl to Morocco.

“Family members got wind that Parker was going to try to lure this girl to Morocco,” McClennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara said, as cited by Waco Tribune, calling the incident “a dastardly story, trafficking at its worst.”

“It’s a very low-down thing, it’s the worst of the worst when you prostitute your own relative,” the sheriff said.

It is unclear in what relation the woman was to the girl. While she was allegedly thrashing out the details of the sale in Morocco, the girl was staying with her father out of state.

On her school profile, Parker wrote that she is married with a “beautiful daughter, Naomie,” a senior at the same school.

After the news of her arrest made headlines in Mexia, a small Texan town of some 7,500 residents, Parker was placed on administrative leave, with the school citing concerns for student safety.

School district Superintendent Lyle DuBus said that the administration takes allegations against the disgraced teacher “very seriously” and  would be working closely with police.

Parker is currently held on a $ 25,000 bond in a county jail.
