Jan. 6 committee believes former Secret Service agent Tony Ornato was responsible for attempts to discredit Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony, CNN reported https://briefnews.eu/jan-6-committee-believes-former-secret-service-agent-tony-ornato-was-responsible-for-attempts-to-discredit-cassidy-hutchinsons-testimony-cnn-reported/ https://briefnews.eu/jan-6-committee-believes-former-secret-service-agent-tony-ornato-was-responsible-for-attempts-to-discredit-cassidy-hutchinsons-testimony-cnn-reported/#respond Tue, 13 Sep 2022 03:40:23 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/jan-6-committee-believes-former-secret-service-agent-tony-ornato-was-responsible-for-attempts-to-discredit-cassidy-hutchinsons-testimony-cnn-reported/ Trump stands on the left while Tony Ornato, wearing sunglasses and a suit, watches over him.
Members of the Secret Service, including Tony Ornato, right, stand guard as then-President Donald Trump, left, speaks to reporters on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington before departing, Sept. 9, 2019.

  • Rep. Adam Kinzinger accused former Secret Service agent Tony Ornato of trying to discredit Cassidy Hutchinson.
  • The Republican told CNN this week that members of the Jan. 6 panel believe Ornato led the charge.
  • Ornato retired in August — two months after he emerged as a key figure in Hutchinson's testimony.

Members of the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot believe former Secret Service agent Tony Ornato was personally involved in efforts to discredit former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson's testimony, according to a report from CNN.

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, one of two Republican members of Congress on the committee, told the outlet this week that representatives on the panel think Ornato led the charge in contradicting parts of Hutchinson's public testimony earlier this year while he was still at the agency and additional, unnamed agents then backed his claims.

The longtime Secret Service agent who ran former President Donald Trump's security detail left the agency last month, saying in a statement that he retired in order to pursue a career in the private sector.

Ornato emerged as a key figure in Hutchinson's bombshell testimony before the committee in June.

Hutchinson testified that Ornato told her Trump had tried to grab the steering wheel of the vehicle he was traveling in and lunged at a Secret Service agent while demanding to be taken to the Capitol during the chaos of January 6, 2021, as he said, "I'm the effing president!"

In the aftermath of Hutchinson's testimony, anonymous sources began to reject her version of events in the press. Several media outlets reported that Secret Service agents were willing to testify that Trump did not try to lunge at them or take control of the vehicle on January 6 — though none have done so publicly.

Now, Kinzinger is accusing Ornato of being one of the anonymous culprits behind the backlash.

"I just think it's so important to keep in mind that, through quote, anonymous sources, which we believe to be actually Tony Ornato himself, he pushed back against Cassidy Hutchinson's testimony and said, it's just not true and Tony will testify under oath. And then, of course, has not come in to testify under oath," the Republican told CNN.

Kate Driscoll, a lawyer for Ornato did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, but told CNN that her client plans to "continue cooperating in the investigations related to the events of January 6."

In response to pushback against Hutchinson's initial testimony, Rep. Liz Cheney, who is the top Republican on the January 6 panel, threw her full support behind Hutchinson and a DC police officer later backed up her claims, testifying that Trump had a "heated exchange" with his security team after they refused to drive him to the Capitol amid the insurrection.

CNN reported this week that investigators have also learned new information about a series of deleted Secret Service test messages regarding the Capitol attack, citing anonymous sources who said it's unclear whether the texts are recoverable.

A spokesperson with the Secret Service pointed Insider to the agency's June 30th statement in response to Hutchinson's testimony:

"As we have done in the past, the United States Secret Service will make individuals with first-hand knowledge of the conversations and interactions referenced by the Committee available for sworn testimony. We are awaiting the opportunity to do so."

Former Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes leaves after a hearing at a federal court in San Jose, California, U.S., July 17, 2019.

  • Elizabeth Holmes has requested a new trial. She was convicted of fraud and conspiracy in a months-long trial that ended in January.
  • Her partner, Billy Evans, says one of the government's star witnesses showed up at their house last month, saying he was losing sleep over his testimony.
  • Last week, the judge in Holmes' case tentatively denied her prior request to toss her conviction.

Elizabeth Holmes is trying to ditch her guilty verdict, and a key witness in her trial may have just given her some ammo in that fight.

On Tuesday, the Theranos founder filed a motion requesting a new trial based on "newly discovered evidence." Holmes had been convicted on counts of fraud and conspiracy in January.

According to the motion, Adam Rosendorff, who was Theranos' lab director from April 2013 to November 2014 and a key witness for the prosecution in Holmes' trial, made attempts to contact her last month, expressing regret about his testimony against her.

On August 8, Rosendorff left a voicemail for Holmes' attorney, Lance Wade. In it, he asked to see Holmes, saying such a meeting would be "quite healing" for both of them. Later that day, Rosendorff showed up at Holmes' house, according to an account of the incident from Billy Evans, Holmes' partner.

"My first thought was he was lost, he looked disheveled," Evans recalled in an email to three of Holmes' attorneys, filed with the motion, that documents their interaction. "His hair was untucked, his hair was messy, his voice slightly trembled."

Evans said Rosendorff kept asking to speak with Holmes.

Evans wrote of his encounter with Rosendorff: "He said he feels guilty, it seemed like he was hurting. He said when he was called as a witness he tried to answer the questions honestly but that the prosecutors tried to make everybody look bad (in the company). He said that the government made things sound worse than they were when he was up on the stand during his testimony. He said he felt like he had done something wrong. And that this was weighing on him, He said he was having trouble sleeping."

Rosendorff remarked that he and Holmes were friends, and he wanted to help her, according to Evans' email.

"He said Theranos was early in his and her career, that he had just finished residency, and that everyone was working so hard to do something good and meaningful," Evans recalled. "He said that everyone was just doing the best they could."

Based on the new development, Holmes' team wants a new trial or an evidentiary hearing where Rosendorff would be subpoenaed to "testify about his concerns."

The new motion comes just days after the judge in Holmes' case tentatively denied her request to throw out her conviction on the grounds of "insufficient evidence."

During Holmes' trial, Rosendorff had testified that he'd tried to delay the launch of Theranos' machines for patient use because they produced inaccurate results, but Holmes went ahead with it anyway.

He also said he was asked to come up with "reasons other than test performance" to explain unusual test results and that Theranos had no formal proficiency testing protocol.

During the trial, the court saw an email Rosendorff had sent Holmes in November 2014, in which he wrote, "I feel really uncomfortable with what is happening right now in this company. I am feeling pressured to vouch for results that I cannot be confident in."

Trump Impeachment Live Stream: Watch Day 2 of Public Testimony https://briefnews.eu/trump-impeachment-live-stream-watch-day-2-of-public-testimony/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-impeachment-live-stream-watch-day-2-of-public-testimony/#respond Fri, 15 Nov 2019 11:23:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-impeachment-live-stream-watch-day-2-of-public-testimony/

The impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump marked a major turning point on Wednesday when William Taylor, the top U.S. diplomat to Ukraine, and George Kent, assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, testified before the House Intelligence Committee. On Friday, open hearings resume with former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch.

Taylor and Kent’s testimonies marked the first public hearings since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry on Sept. 24. Yovanovitch’s remarks are expected to be broadcast on C-SPAN, as well as all major cable news networks. Coverage begins at 9 am.

The following testimonies are also scheduled to take place in the coming days:

Tuesday, Nov. 19
Jennifer Williams (State Department official)
Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman (National Security Council staffer)
Kurt Volker (former U.S. special representative to Ukraine)
Tim Morrison (National Security Council staffer)

Wednesday, Nov. 20
Gordon Sondland (U.S. Ambassador to the EU)
Laura Cooper (Defense Department official)
David Hale (Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs)

Thursday, Nov. 21
Fiona Hill (National Security Council staffer)

Trump is the fourth U.S. president to face an impeachment inquiry. The vote by the House of Representatives came after Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky on July 25. During the 30-minute conversation, Trump asked Zelensky to investigate potential political rival Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, who previously sat on the board of a Ukrainian natural gas company while his father served as vice president of the United States.

Former FBI director James Comey has agreed to testify at a closed-door hearing at US House of Representatives Judiciary Committee, according to his lawyer. The session, to be held December 7, will focus on his handling of investigations into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server and the alleged Russian collusion of President Donald Trump’s campaign. Comey previously wanted to have the hearing public, saying he was concerned his testimony might be distorted. His lawyer says the committee will provide the former director with the transcript within 24 hours and he would be able to make any part of it public.

Christine Blasey Ford and Brett Kavanaugh delivered emotional testimonies and Senate lawmakers squared off during historic testimony on sexual assault https://briefnews.eu/christine-blasey-ford-and-brett-kavanaugh-delivered-emotional-testimonies-and-senate-lawmakers-squared-off-during-historic-testimony-on-sexual-assault/ https://briefnews.eu/christine-blasey-ford-and-brett-kavanaugh-delivered-emotional-testimonies-and-senate-lawmakers-squared-off-during-historic-testimony-on-sexual-assault/#respond Fri, 28 Sep 2018 22:42:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/christine-blasey-ford-and-brett-kavanaugh-delivered-emotional-testimonies-and-senate-lawmakers-squared-off-during-historic-testimony-on-sexual-assault/ Christine Blasey Ford TestimonyWin McNamee/Getty Images

  • Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who accused him sexual assault, went before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday where they each delivered passionate testimonies about the alleged incident.
  • The hearing were, by turns, emotional, contentious, and dramatic. As the hearings adjourned at the end of the day, Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court was left hanging in the balance.

Here are six takeaways from the hearings:

  • Ford maintained that she is 100% certain that Kavanaugh was the person who assaulted her at a gathering while the two were high school students in Maryland in the 1980s. Ford said the experience has haunted her for years. Her voice cracked as she described to senators how Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed, at the gathering, groped her, and held his hand over her mouth so she couldn’t scream. However, Ford was unable to provide some key details about the night the alleged assault happened.
  • Kavanaugh became visibly angry during his opening statement as he vehemently denied Ford’s allegations. He repeatedly lamented that the claims had destroyed his reputation, and offered as evidence a detailed calendar he said shows that he couldn’t have been at the party. The Supreme Court nominee expressed sympathy for Ford‘s experience while reiterating his denials of sexual impropriety.
  • Senators took Kavanaugh to task on his drinking in high school and college. Kavanaugh admitted to the behavior, but seemed to snipe at Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota when she asked if he had ever drank to the point where he would forget things. Kavanaugh denied that and turned the question back to Klobuchar, asking her if she had ever “blacked out” herself. Kavanaugh’s snipe sparked some reaction because Klobuchar has spoken publicly in the past about her father’s alcoholism. Kavanaugh later apologized to the senator.
  • Kavanaugh sparred with Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island about his school yearbook. His 1983 Georgetown Prep yearbook revealed his love of drinking, sports, and partying. At one point, Kavanaugh was forced to explain references to beer and flatulence.
  • Among all of the Republican lawmakers on the Judiciary Committee, Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina appeared to be the most outraged. The Republican Senator from South Carolina assured Kavanaugh that he was on his side and that he had. “nothing to apologize” for as he sounded off on partisan efforts to “ruin this guy’s life.” Graham called Thursday’s hearing overly political and joined other Republican senators — and Kavanaugh himself — in accusing Democrats of acting in bad faith concerning how they handled Ford. Democratic lawmakers on the committee fiercely denied acting inappropriately and accused Republicans of neglecting their duties just to get Kavanaugh confirmed.
  • Ultimately, Ford received praise for her testimony. Some observers, including Fox News anchor Chris Wallace, said Ford looked “extremely credible,” adding, “this could be a disaster for the Republicans.”
