On Tuesday, Twitter's former head of security, Peiter Zatko, will speak publicly for the first time since his bombshell whistleblower complaint that may be key to determining the company's future. 

Zatko is set to testify in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee to answer questions about claims he made about Twitter's security failings. 

Zatko's complaint details Twitter's allegedly negligent security practices and says they pose a threat to user privacy and even national security. 

He also accuses Jack Dorsey of suffering from a "drastic loss of focus" in his final year as CEO, saying he was so disengaged that some senior employees allegedly speculated about whether he was sick. 

Zatko's complaint contains myriad information that may interest US lawmakers. He accuses the company's leadership of misleading government regulators about security flaws that could potentially pave the way for foreign spying, hacking, or disinformation campaigns, according to CNN.

The complaint also alleges that Twitter's current CEO, Parag Agrawal, once suggested that the company bow to Russia's censorship and surveillance demands to grow its user base. 

The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to question Zatko about all of these claims. 

"Mr. Zatko's allegations of widespread security failures and foreign state actor interference at Twitter raise serious concerns.  If these claims are accurate, they may show dangerous data privacy and security risks for Twitter users around the world. The Senate Judiciary Committee will investigate this issue further with a full Committee hearing this work period, and take further steps as needed to get to the bottom of these alarming allegations," Senators Chuck Grassley and Dick Durbin said in a joint statement last month. 

Twitter has denied Zatko's claims and has painted him as a disgruntled employee who was fired for "ineffective leadership and poor performance."

Interest in Zatko's testimony has intensified after a judge ruled that Elon Musk can use claims from the whistleblower's complaint in his legal battle to terminate his deal to buy Twitter. 

The "hearing will be closely watched by the Street to better understand the details around security issues as well as the bot/fake account issue at the centerpiece of Musk's focus," Dan Ives, a technology analyst at Wedbush Securities, wrote in a recent note to clients.

Intensifying the drama: Twitter shareholders are expected to approve Musk's $ 44 billion takeover deal in a shareholder vote on Tuesday, the same day as Zatko's testimony, The Wall Street Journal reported.

A former high-ranking gymnastics coach testified at his sexual assault trial Thursday that he never took naps with the gymnast levelling accusations against him nor did he spoon her in bed, though he acknowledged he kissed her on the lips every time he saw her.

Dave Brubaker, who used to be the director of the women's national gymnastics team, has pleaded not guilty to one count of sexual assault and one count of invitation to sexual touching at his judge-alone trial in Sarnia, Ont. The charges relate to alleged incidents between 2000 and 2007.

The gymnast, who is now in her 30s, has testified that Brubaker would kiss her on the lips to say hello and goodbye starting when she was 12 years old. She said he initiated the ritual after a trip to Europe and kissed others on the cheek but kissed her on the lips.

The woman also testified that Brubaker would pick her up from school and take her to his house, where he would occasionally spoon her in bed and tickle her belly before driving her to practice.

In court Thursday, Brubaker acknowledged that the gymnast would come over to his house between school and practice, but he said they did not take naps together.

"It never happened," he said.

He also said that while he did kiss her regularly on the lips, he did not compel her to.

"I think it was just out of habit … that she started to kiss me," he said, insisting that the kisses were innocent.

The woman has also told the trial that Brubaker occasionally touched her inappropriately during sports massages — an allegation Brubaker firmly denied.

He said he would palpate the area where her upper thigh met her pubic area, as well as the area around her breast to get at pectoral muscles, but maintained that it was all to improve her performance in the sport.

Sports massages crucial to success: expert

An expert witness who testified earlier Thursday said sports massages such as the ones administered by Brubaker were crucial to success in gymnastics.

"It's required," said Ronald Weese, a sports physiologist with a specialization in training gymnastics coaches. "You can't get [to an elite level] from here without an emphasis on the small, finer details."

Weese said the muscles in those parts of the body are extremely important for gymnasts, who use them while doing the splits or to lift themselves up. He also said it's possible for an inexperienced sports therapist to touch the wrong part of the body in these massages.

"I'm sure slips occur all the time, but the more expert you are about it the less they occur," he said.

When questioned by Crown attorney David Rows, Weese said it would be unusual for a coach to lie behind an athlete and rub her belly.

The trial has heard that in a videotaped interview with police, Brubaker apologized for "crossing the line" with the complainant, although he said he never had any sexual intent with her.

That video was allowed into evidence on Thursday. Its admissibility had been called into question when court heard that the police officer interviewing Brubaker was related to the complainant by marriage.

"It is clear this personal involvement could have an impact on the way the officer conducted the interview," Justice Deborah Austin said, adding that it wasn't clear how Brubaker's responses would have changed had he known about the relationship.

Austin said she would exercise a degree of caution in weighing the video as evidence.

A woman who accused her former gymnastics coach of sexual assault told his trial on Tuesday that the man controlled every aspect of her life when she was training with him as a teenager.

The complainant, whose identity is protected by a publication ban, testified that Dave Brubaker would routinely kiss her on the lips to say hello and goodbye, starting when she was 12 years old.

"I would say that at the time, Dave had full control over everything — what time I went to bed, what I ate, how I did my hair," she said at the judge-alone trial taking place in Sarnia, Ont. "Whatever he said, went. I had full trust in him."

The woman, who is now in her 30s, said Brubaker would pick her up from school, and take her to his house where he occasionally would spoon her in bed and tickle her belly, before driving her to practice. She also alleged there were times when he touched her inappropriately during sports massages.

She said she feared the coach would punish her in the gym if she denied his advances.

Brubaker, 55, has pleaded not guilty to one count of sexual assault and one count of invitation to sexual touching related to the alleged incidents involving the teenaged gymnast between 2000 and 2007.

He was initially charged with 10 sexual offences last December and was placed on administrative leave by Gymnastics Canada, where he had served as director of the women's national team, but the number of charges were reduced Tuesday at the beginning of his trial.

Court heard a few minutes of an interview Brubaker gave to police, which the trial judge will determine whether to include as evidence in the case. In it, Brubaker maintained that his relationship with the girls he coached was innocent.

"It wasn't a power trip," he said in the clip. "I do admit that I liked the girls at that moment. It wasn't in a sexual way."

Brubaker also told police he knew "something was coming" after another gymnastics coach was suspended weeks earlier over allegations of sexual misconduct. He said he understood that he'd never coach again.

"I know that because it's happening on Facebook with everybody saying 'me too," he said.

The complainant in the case, who was the first witness to testify, alleged the spooning incidents involving Brubaker started when she was in high school and continued until she quit gymnastics at 19.

'I was very uncomfortable'

"I remember feeling like bugs were crawling under my skin," she said. "I was very uncomfortable. And sick to my stomach."

She said Brubaker would regularly massage her body to relieve her of soreness. Sometimes, she told the court, those massages made her uncomfortable, like when Brubaker would massage her upper thigh, under her underwear.

Several times, he massaged around her pubic area, she said. On other instances, he would touch her buttocks while hugging her goodbye.

When questioned by the defence, the woman acknowledged telling investigators that she didn't think Brubaker's hands went under her underwear on purpose. She also said it was not uncommon for gymnasts to receive massages.

Brubaker's defence lawyer, Patrick Ducharme, noted that the woman could not remember which hand his client used to touch her buttocks. He also noted that the officer who investigated Brubaker was related to the woman, and was the best man in her wedding.

The woman told the court that she intentionally hurt herself and quit gymnastics when she was 19 because she could no longer handle the pressures of her relationship with Brubaker. She coached for a year after that, she said, but avoided contact with Brubaker when possible.

Quit gymnastics

Ducharme suggested that the woman hurt herself and quit gymnastics around the same time that she realized she wouldn't make it to the Olympics.

"That must have put a tremendous strain on you," he said.

Another former competitive gymnast who trained under Brubaker testified later Tuesday that her former coach suggested his trainees kiss him and his wife — also a gymnastics coach — on the cheek as a sign of respect.

She noted, however, that for several years, the only gymnast she saw kissing Brubaker on the lips was the complainant.

The second woman also said she saw Brubaker massaging the complainant in her underwear, before turning to her and saying "you're next."

"I remember thinking, 'I'm not comfortable being massaged in my underwear,' so I went into my room and put on tights," she said.

The charges against Brubaker, who was Canada's head gymnastics coach at the 2016 Rio Olympics, came at a watershed moment for gymnastics in Canada.

Earlier that month, Gymnastics Canada suspended Edmonton-based coach Michel Arsenault over allegations he sexually abused at least three gymnasts in Quebec when they were minors in the 1980s and early '90s. In January, a Mississauga, Ont.-based gymnastics coach was charged over allegations he sexually abused a 15-year-old girl over a four-year period.

Pope Francis admitted Saturday that he can sometimes struggle with modern technology while joking that both he and his predecessor are on the “waiting list” for sainthood.

“I don’t know how to use online networks and that kind of thing, not even mobile phones, I don’t have one,” the 81-year-old pontiff told his audience in Rome. “I don’t know how to use the internet. When I have to send an email I write it by hand and a secretary sends it for me,” he added.

Pope Francis also announced that Pope Paul VI, who died in 1978, and is widely credited as a reformer within the Catholic faith, will be canonized as a saint later in 2018. More than 80 popes are recognized as saints by the Catholic Church while many more have been beatified, or declared to be among the blessed and entitled to specific religious honor and veneration.

He also joked that both he and his predecessor could one day also be canonized. “And Benedict and I are on the waiting list,” Pope Francis said, jokingly. “Pray for us!” However, such a joke may once again shine a spotlight on the past and present pontiffs’ failures amid yet another series of child sex abuse scandals within the Catholic Church. Pope Benedict XVI resigned in February 2013 following a slew of financial scandals.

Meanwhile, in New York, the key witness in the sex abuse case leveled against a Chilean bishop gave “eye opening” testimony to a papally-mandated investigator. Juan Carlos Cruz spoke with Archbishop Charles Scicluna, one of the most experienced Vatican investigators of sexual abuse, for approximately four hours Saturday.

“I feel that I was heard… it was very intense and very detailed and very, sometimes, eye-opening for them,” Cruz said, as cited by Reuters. “He was hearing my testimony, and I was telling him about the abuse, about the cover up [and] the way survivors, not just me, are treated… the personal toll it takes on someone. He was crying… it wasn’t an act… I felt that he was concerned and that he was listening,” Cruz said. “Hopefully it will lead to good things.”

Pope Francis previously accused the alleged of victims of sexual abuse in Chile of slander, describing their allegations against Bishop Juan Barros as “calumny” with “not a shred of evidence against him.” He later apologized for his comments saying, “covering up abuse is an abuse in itself.” The man that the Argentinian pontiff put in charge of financial reform,  Cardinal George Pell, was recalled to Australia to face sex offense charges in 2017.

The Pope’s widely publicized and often-lauded efforts at reform within the Church have alienated more conservative Catholics in the Vatican while his remarks regarding the multiple child sex scandals besetting the Catholic Church have disenfranchised his secular, liberal supporters.

Pope Francis has also received an unprecedented challenge to his papacy after four cardinals issued a dubia or letter of theological doubt, after the perceived softening of the Catholic Church’s stance on the topics of homosexuality, divorce and remarriage in 2014 and 2015.

The pontiff has also weighed in on political affairs such as the refugee crisis in Europe, climate change, and US President Donald Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. However, there was much dismay when he failed to condemn the actions of the Burmese military and the Myanmar government’s handling of the Rohingya crisis and alleged genocide during a recent tour.

A chorus of Republicans continued to question the the credibility of special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe this week amid reports that two former investigators sent text messages critical of President Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign.

In August, Mueller ousted Peter Strzok —a veteran counterintelligence agent who was among those overseeing the Hillary Clinton email investigation — and relegated him to the human-resources department.

Following reports of the anti-Trump texts, White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley on Friday said the records showed “extreme bias” among some high-up members of the FBI. Republicans, including Trump himself, echoed that concern.
