The Good Doctor went full-on CSI: Cyber this week — and you probably have some thoughts.

In addition to the cyberattack, Monday’s Freddie Highmore-directed episode saw the departure of one of the newbies (no real surprise, given where her story left off four weeks ago) and the salvation of a fan-favorite friendship.

Before you hit the comments and try to make sense of St. Bonaventure’s cybersecurity system, let’s briefly recap what happened in “Decrypt”:

When the hospital was hit with a cyberattack, IT expert Lea sought to outsmart the hackers and prove herself to Glassman. After the dark-web terrorists caught wind of the hospital’s measly ransom offer (negotiated by Masters of Sex and Trial & Error alum Nicholas D’Agosto), they sent Lea a “signal text” — whatever that means. They doubled the ransom to $ 4 million and activated malware. “If we don’t pay, they’re going to delete our data and destroy all of our MRI, CT and x-ray machines,” Lea explained. Eh, just go with it.

Shaun’s girlfriend had just 24 hours to retrace the attack chain and retrieve the hospital’s data — “otherwise, we might as well toss every computer we have in the recycle bin,” she said. She pulled an all-nighter, performed high-risk server surgery (or something), and saved the day — just seconds before Glassman authorized the bitcoin transfer. In return, Shaun’s father figure thanked Lea for her hard work and invited her to his weekly poker game. (I would’ve offered her a raise, but that’s just me.)

As the clock was ticking, Lea received some much-needed assurance from Shaun. She was 95-percent certain that she could defeat the hackers, but the off chance of failure made her extremely nervous. In an effort to relate to her predicament, Dr. Murphy explained that he’s never certain that a surgical procedure is going to go according to plan; there’s always a chance something can go wrong, and that has to be OK.

Clearly, the pep talk worked.

As for Shaun, he worked alongside Claire and Olivia on an inspirational cancer survivor-turned-philanthropist who harbored a dark secret: He didn’t actually lose his leg to cancer — he was a fraud. He lost the limb in a freak motorcycle accident when he was 22 years old, but kept the lie going to inspire others, help those in need and (ugh) profit off of his philanthropy. When the truth was leaked to the press, Lim assumed it was Claire’s doing and pulled her from the case, only for Olivia to come forward and get herself fired. But as it turned on, Olivia wasn’t the whistleblower. She just wanted out of her residency.

In the parking lot, Olivia explained to Andrews that she never wanted to become a doctor, but everyone in her life, including her uncle, was just so gosh-darn persistent. At last, Olivia got through to him. Andrews meanwhile copped to being the whistleblower! He knew the patient was a fraud, but didn’t expect Lim to blame Claire. And he certainly didn’t expect it’d lead to his niece’s dismissal.

As for Lim: The chief of surgery made her way over to Claire’s apartment with a pint of salted caramel ice cream to apologize for her recent behavior. Claire accepted the peace offering and let her in. Friendship restored!

And lest we forget about the other Case of the Week… With the help of Park, Jordan and Asher, Morgan successfully orchestrated a multi-organ chain transplant and saved end-stage liver disease patient Jamie’s life.

  • Mexican senators have asked their government to consider ending security and immigration cooperation with the US.
  • The call comes in response to Trump’s now-rescinded policy of separating immigrant families at the border.
  • It is not the first time Mexican officials have made such a proposal.

Mexican legislators this week proposed ending cooperation with the US on immigration, counterterrorism, and fighting organized crime “as long as President Donald Trump does not act with the respect that migrants deserve.”

The proposal was made on Wednesday by the Mexican Congress’ Permanent Commission, which meets while Congress is in recess, and asks the executive branch to “consider the possibility of withdrawing from any bilateral cooperation scheme” with the US on those issues.

5 Terrorist Attacks That Could Happen in Your Neighborhood and How to Survive Them [INFOGRAPHIC] https://briefnews.eu/5-terrorist-attacks-that-could-happen-in-your-neighborhood-and-how-to-survive-them-infographic/ https://briefnews.eu/5-terrorist-attacks-that-could-happen-in-your-neighborhood-and-how-to-survive-them-infographic/#respond Mon, 09 Apr 2018 11:16:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/?p=138954 Terrorism has been around for centuries, but we are still unable to prevent such things from happening. Maybe some of our counterterrorism measures have considerably slowed it down, but they still exist. If the policies that restrict and ban people, tighten surveillance, and prohibit everyday things are unable to ensure everyone’s safety, then perhaps it’s time we learn how to survive attacks should they happen to us.

Sometimes, it’s not how we try to prevent these things from happening. In most cases, no matter how much preparation we do, these things are just out of our hands. We don’t decide on what steps our leaders will take when dealing with other countries. We don’t know what the next person is planning to do next. We don’t know who will act out and strike. It could be anyone, including your unassuming neighbor or the popular kid in school.

Although we don’t know for sure when and where terrorism will attack next, we can learn from precedents on how to deal with future incidents. Our past tragedies give us lessons on how to survive them. Here are five possible terrorist attacks that can happen in your area and what you can do to survive them presented by MikesGearReviews.com

He confirmed that police have ruled out terrorism in the ongoing investigation.

“Even despite the fact that there is already compelling evidence that we are dealing with a single perpetrator who did not relate to terrorist context… [the incident] should be thoroughly investigated,” German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer stated on Sunday.

Speaking at the crime scene, the minister condemned the “brutal and cowardly crime,” but added it would be impossible in future “to reduce or prevent such crimes,” according to Germany’s Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper.

Meanwhile, investigators are still trying to establish the motive for the ramming attack. Public prosecutors and police said in a joint statement: “So far there are no indications of a possible background for the crime.” The law enforcement agencies added: “The investigations are being conducted at full speed and in all directions.”

Notably, investigators said the 48-year-old German man, identified as Jens B. by local media, was known to police. Muenster prosecutor Elke Adomeit told reporters on Sunday that there had been three court hearings involving the deceased van driver in the city, as well as one in the town of Arnsberg, in 2015 and 2016, Die Welt reported.

The prosecutor said Jens B. had run-ins with the law relating to violent conduct, property damage and fraud, but all charges had been dismissed. She added that investigators have no tip-offs in relation to the political background of the man, though German media previously reported he may have been a far-right extremist.

The attack came on Saturday after a grey minivan rammed into a dining area outside the Kiepenkerl cafe in Muenster, a popular venue for locals and tourists. It is located in the historical part of the city. A 51-year-old woman from Lueneburg in northern Germany and a 65-year-old man from Borken municipality near Muenster were killed.

At least 20 people were injured, and some of them were airlifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Muenster University Hospital carried out several emergency operations on Saturday evening, according to Die Welt, but it is still unclear how many people sustained life-threatening injuries.

Saturday’s attack took place on the anniversary of a truck attack in Stockholm in which an Islamism-inspired perpetrator killed five people.

‘Open support for terrorism’: Turkish deputy PM slams Macron’s pro-Kurdish statement https://briefnews.eu/open-support-for-terrorism-turkish-deputy-pm-slams-macrons-pro-kurdish-statement/ https://briefnews.eu/open-support-for-terrorism-turkish-deputy-pm-slams-macrons-pro-kurdish-statement/#respond Fri, 30 Mar 2018 12:55:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/open-support-for-terrorism-turkish-deputy-pm-slams-macrons-pro-kurdish-statement/ Turkey’s deputy PM has accused France of supporting terrorism by siding with the Kurds. It comes after the French president met representatives of the Syrian Kurdish militias in Paris and expressed his country’s support for them.

Emmanuel Macron met a delegation from Syria on Thursday, which included the YPG, the Kurdish militias, as well as the Kurds’ political arm, the PYD. The president’s office later released a statement of support for the Kurd-dominated Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which played a key role in the US-led coalition’s effort to crack down on jihadist group Islamic State in northern Syria.

“The president… paid tribute to the sacrifices and the determining role of the SDF in the fight against Daesh,” the statement said, referring to the jihadists by their Arab-language abbreviation.

“He assured the SDF of France’s support for the stabilization of the security zone in the northeast of Syria, within the framework of an inclusive and balanced governance, to prevent any resurgence of Islamic State.”

The statement did not elaborate on how exactly Paris plans to support the SDF, but PYD member Khaled Eissa told Reuters after the meeting that Macron promised to send more French troops to the area, provide humanitarian assistance, and push for a diplomatic settlement of the conflict between the Kurds and Turkey.

Ankara considers the YPG to be an extension of the Turkey-based Kurdish militant group PKK, which for decades has fought a guerrilla war against the Turkish government. Turkish forces are currently conducting a military operation in north-western Syria, targeting Kurdish militias while Turkish officials repeatedly threatened to move further east along the border.

France’s public support of the YPG angered Ankara, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announcing a further military crackdown on Syrian Kurds on Friday, potentially going further into Iraq. He warned that while Turkey had no intention of harming the troops of its NATO allies deployed in Syria, he would not allow their presence to serve as protection for “terrorists.” He also rejected France’s mediation between Ankara and the YPG.

Earlier, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag said the French statement was an act of “open support for terrorism, terror groups, and terrorists; an attempt to legalize terrorist groups; and clear cooperation and solidarity with the terror groups attacking Turkey.” The remarks posted on his official Twitter account also warned that those supporting terrorism “will become a target of Turkey” and that he hoped that France would not take “such an irrational step.”

The diplomatic spat between Paris and Ankara comes just as the US, another principal supporter of the Syrian Kurds, is considering the withdrawal of troops from Syria. “We’re coming out of Syria very soon. Let the other people take care of it now,” President Donald Trump said in a speech on Thursday.

A Pentagon plan to forge a “border security force” in northern Syria triggered the Turkish military operation targeting the Kurdish enclave of Afrin in January. The Kurdish town of Manbij, where US troops backing the SDF are stationed, was repeatedly named in Ankara as a possible target for a Turkish offensive.

The driver who died on Wednesday night when his car caught fire after crashing through the gate at Travis Air Force Base had no known links to terrorism, AP reported the FBI as saying. Hafiz Kazi, 51, did not leave a manifesto or any explanation for the incident, and a video found on a cellphone also provided no clue. “Why did this individual end up at the front gate of Travis Air Base on fire and now deceased? We don’t have the answers to that,’” said FBI agent Sean Ragan. Investigators have interviewed some of Kazi’s contacts and expect to execute some search warrants.

Opposition cries censorship as Spanish rapper jailed for insulting king & glorifying terrorism https://briefnews.eu/opposition-cries-censorship-as-spanish-rapper-jailed-for-insulting-king-glorifying-terrorism/ https://briefnews.eu/opposition-cries-censorship-as-spanish-rapper-jailed-for-insulting-king-glorifying-terrorism/#respond Wed, 21 Feb 2018 20:35:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/opposition-cries-censorship-as-spanish-rapper-jailed-for-insulting-king-glorifying-terrorism/

The Spanish Supreme Court has upheld a decision to jail a rapper for three and a half years for a song deemed to have glorified terrorism and insulted the crown, sparking a debate about freedom of expression in the country.

The court rejected arguments on Tuesday by little-known rapper Jose Miguel Arenas Beltran, stage name Valtonyc, that his songs were protected by freedom of expression laws, when ratifying a sentence handed down last February.

Among the lyrics deemed criminal were: “Let them be as frightened as a police officer in the Basque Country,” a reference to violence against police officers in the region by the now-disarmed Basque separatist group ETA.

Valtonyc went on to fantasize about the king having “a rendez-vous at the village square, with a noose around his neck.” In another track Valtonyc threatened to kill a Spanish politician and aristocrat involved in a corruption scandal after forcing her to “see how her son lives among rats.”

The court deemed that the Mallorcan rapper’s lyrics constituted “praise, not of political objectives but of the violent means used by the cited terrorist organizations” and upheld his three and a half-year sentence, Valtonyc confirmed the decision on social media.

Leftwing figures from Spain rallied to the rapper’s defense and branded his prosecution as an attack on freedom of expression. “Censoring a book because it speaks of corruption, sending a rapper to jail for a song, or taking down a work of art because it’s uncomfortable. The gag laws of the PP (Partido Popular) are incompatible with a fair and democratic country,” Podemos deputy Irene Montero wrote on twitter.

Writers’ group PEN Català‏ also criticised the decision saying that it “proves Spanish Gag Law is a serious attack on freedom of expression”.

In a statement the group also said that it was “also concerned about the ‘chilling effect’ of this law on artistic expression.”

An appeals court has ruled that Twitter is not liable for the deaths of two American military contractors who were killed in Jordan in 2015.

In a Wednesday decision, the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with a lower court’s ruling in 2016 for dismissal of the case, Fields v. Twitter.

As Ars reported, the plaintiffs claimed that Twitter violated the Anti-Terrorism Act by providing Twitter accounts to the terrorist group. The plaintiffs, who represent the estate of the two deceased men, did not allege that any specific tweets instigated the terrorist to kill the US contractors, and they did not allege that ISIS recruited or trained the terrorist over Twitter. However, they did claim that Twitter provided “material support” for terrorism by allowing ISIS and its sympathizers on the social media network.

  • Appleby, the firm at the center of last year’s massive Paradise Papers leak, allegedly provided services to a bank accused of facilitating global terror and crime, according to a Guardian report.
  • Appleby had represented the Federal Bank of the Middle East (FBME) since 2004, the report said.

  • The bank denies the allegations.

Appleby, the firm at the center of last year’s massive Paradise Papers leak allegedly provided services to a bank accused of facilitating global terror and crime, the Guardian reported on Tuesday.

Appleby had allegedly represented the international Federal Bank of the Middle East (FBME) since 2004, according to the report.

The US Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) leveled several major allegations against FBME, calling it a “primary money laundering concern,” according to US federal court documents filed in October 2017.

A 2014 note published by FinCEN in the US Federal Register went further in its description of FBME’s alleged activities:

“FBME is used by its customers to facilitate money laundering, terrorist financing, transnational organised crime, fraud, sanctions evasion and other illicit activity internationally and through the US financial system,” the note said.

Additionally, the 2014 note alleged that at least one of FBME’s customers was a front-company for the group, Scientific Studies and Research Center, an entity that was sanctioned by the US and was determined to be a “proliferator of weapons of mass destruction,” according to the note.

FBME has vehemently denied the allegations. A spokesperson for the institution said: “The outrageous claims that FBME acted for terrorists, or knowingly acted for any sanctioned individuals, are false and deliberately damaging.”

“Any client that was sanctioned had their accounts frozen immediately and were reported to the regulator,” the bank said.

Appleby ended its relationship with FBME in 2015, according to federal court documents.
