Tim Johnson

August 30, 2018

The best way to navigate Canada’s mighty St. Lawrence river? By cargo ship, of course—Tim Johnson traces a shipping route that delivers essential goods to remote First Nations and Québécois Canadians.

At this point, here on the south shore, it seems a little ridiculous to call the St. Lawrence a river.

One of Canada’s great waterways—the one that links the Great Lakes with the North Atlantic and brought European explorers like Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain deep into the heart of this part of the New World—it cleaves a massive divide into two provinces on the eastern end of the country. And when the mighty St. Lawrence reaches Rimouski, in Quebec’s Bas-Saint-Laurent region, you can scarcely see across it.

Sailing east from here, it only gets bigger, and wider, and stronger, eventually emptying into a gulf of the same name. But across on the north shore, the population thins out, just a string of small villages separated by forest and bush so complete it could swallow you whole. Living in relative isolation, each one of these communities occupies its own little world.

And then the road ends. “After that, you need to travel by snowmobile, plane, or this vessel,” says Francis Roy, president of Relais Nordik, the company that owns and operates the MV Bella Desgagnes as he gives me a tour of the relatively small ship. “And then you’ll really feel the difference. French, English and First nations—the Lower North Shore is a mixture of cultures.”

RELATED: Road tripping Canada’s surf highway

Boarding in Rimouski, I’m about to sail northeast, a 2,200-kilometer round-trip, for a week on the Bella. A workhorse of a vessel, the 97-meter ship can carry almost 400 guests, both in passenger decks lined with airline-style seats and 63 private cabins, sailing to the edge of the Far North, ferrying both vacationers to Canada’s maritime provinces and locals between remote communities.

Many of the latter belong to Quebec’s First Nations; tiny, isolated spots rich in history and culture. I’m here to sail to the Labrador border (and back), connecting with indigenous and Québécois Canadians, seeing the diversity in their communities—and along the way becoming more than slightly obsessed with the cargo.

As we proceed east toward the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the coastline fleeing from sight on both sides, we see corners of the country rarely spotted by even adventurous Québécois. I settle into my functional cabin, sleeping well on the waves, occasionally awakened in the middle of the night by the slight movement of the ship. There’s no casino or swimming pool, so I content myself with conversation, up on the top decks or while eating meals with other guests in the dining room.

And at each stop, I disembark and take a tour, unpolished little excursions organized for a minimal fee by local residents to give us something to do while they unload and load the cargo.

It’s always clear that the guides are proud of their towns (and their resilience). On 222-kilometer-long Anticosti Island, I spot wild deer wandering right through the heart of the main (and only) village, Port-Menier, and learn that while 216 residents live here, the island is home to more than 200,000 deer.

In one such village, La Romaine, we board a short yellow school bus, defying the foul weather that has closed in, oppressive clouds and heavy rain. Bumping along, we learn some of the darker chapters in the history of the area. As we pass the local Catholic church with its knotty-line altar, our guide tells us how, for decades, local kids were separated from their families and forced to attend ’residential schools’ where abuse was common and children were barred from speaking their own language or going home.

Later, at Saint-Augustin, a brief stop without a tour, I walk up an incline to a tipi set up within view of the ship, and push through the language barrier to speak with an Innu man. The Innu, or Montagnais, are the Indigenous people from this part of Quebec, which they know as Nitassinan (‘our land’), and the man has set up in that spot with his family to help share his culture with visitors. He shows a small group of us a few traditional tricks, including how to cook a meal over a fire, before we need to chase the setting sun back to the Bella before she casts off again.

We reach the road again at Blanc-Sablon, population 1,200, and the terminus of our journey. Meaning ‘white sand’, the shores here are lined with beaches and—despite its subarctic latitude—Caribbean-blue waters. A busy port-of-call over the years for whalers, sailors, and cod and lobster fishermen, archaeology has revealed settlement here for some 8,000 years, back to the Basque (sailors from the Basque, Spain, whaled and fished Newfoundland from 1525) and beyond.

Most of the holidaymakers on board disembark here, waiting on the shore for their SUVs and Subarus to be dropped down onto the dock by the crane. Most of them will drive out of the box and over to the next slip, boarding the big ferry and heading for Newfoundland, just across the Strait of Belle Isle.

But not me. I stand there, still in awe of all that cargo, watching the crane swing container after container back on board, ready to load up and head all the way back to Rimouski.

“We generally support the idea. But, of course, as always in such cases, you need to thoroughly work out the feasibility,” Putin said during a trilateral meeting with the heads of the People’s Republic of China and Mongolia in Qingdao, China.

Mongolia has been offering its territory for transit of Russian gas to China for a number of years, pointing to security and length of the way. Meanwhile, all the ways of supplying gas to China discussed and implemented by Russia’s Gazprom are direct pipelines from Russia to China without transit states from Blagoveshchensk, Vladivostok, and Altai.

Russia is China’s largest supplier of oil, while the latter is the largest buyer in the world. “Last year, we supplied more than 50 million tons of oil. By April, this number increased by another 26 percent,” the Russian president said at a press conference in Beijing after meeting China’s president, Xi Jinping.

Work on the construction of the Eastern Route pipeline from Russia to China is on schedule, and companies from both countries are participating at Russia’s $ 27 billion LNG plant in Yamal, Putin added.

  • The Spurs have been hit by injuries this season, namely to star forward Kawhi Leonard, who has played just nine games this season.
  • The Spurs have an uphill battle ahead, with 12 of their next 15 games coming against above-.500 teams and several opponents who stand in their way of making the postseason.

With just 15 games remaining in their season, the San Antonio Spurs are in unusual territory — the draft lottery.

After a 109-93 loss to the Houston Rockets on Monday, the Spurs fell to 37-30, and because of tiebreaker rules, into 10th place in the Western Conference. They’ve lost 11 of their last 14 games.

UAE museum 'annexes' Omani territory, deletes Qatar in map mishaps https://briefnews.eu/uae-museum-annexes-omani-territory-deletes-qatar-in-map-mishaps/ https://briefnews.eu/uae-museum-annexes-omani-territory-deletes-qatar-in-map-mishaps/#respond Mon, 22 Jan 2018 18:25:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uae-museum-annexes-omani-territory-deletes-qatar-in-map-mishaps/

A map in the United Arab Emirates’ Louvre Abu Dhabi Museum shows the Omani exclave of Musandam as being part of the UAE, the second time the museum has come under fire for a geographical error within a week.

The map shows Musandam, a northern Omani exclave, as part of the UAE. Musandam is separated from the rest of Oman by the UAE. It is an important strategic area, and gives Oman partial control of the popular shipping route the Strait of Hormuz, which it shares with Iran.

The map appears in the Children’s Museum section of the Louvre Abu Dhabi. The Arabic hashtag translated as, ‘Musandam is part of Oman,’ has been trending on social media in response, Times of Oman reports.

This is the second time the museum has invited criticism for an inaccurate map. Last week, it was found to have omitted Qatar from the chart altogether.

The UAE is part of a blockade against Qatar which has been going on since June. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and UAE announced they were cutting ties with Qatar over its alleged state support of terrorism. Oman has managed to remain neutral in the dispute, but has helped Qatar bypass the blockade.

Anwar Gargash, the UAE minister of state for foreign affairs responded to the anger, saying it was a, “small mishap,” and said people were, “looking to create unnecessary controversy,” Al Jazeera reports.

RT has reached out to the museum for further details on the map.

US State Dept cautions Iraqi govt against troop advances in Kurdish territory https://briefnews.eu/us-state-dept-cautions-iraqi-govt-against-troop-advances-in-kurdish-territory/ https://briefnews.eu/us-state-dept-cautions-iraqi-govt-against-troop-advances-in-kurdish-territory/#respond Sat, 21 Oct 2017 00:21:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-state-dept-cautions-iraqi-govt-against-troop-advances-in-kurdish-territory/

The US State Department is advising Iraq’s federal authority to limit its military activity in the country’s Kurdish northern region, as it also calls for “all parties to cease all violence” in the wake of violence in the town of Altun Kupri.

On Friday, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert urged the Baghdad government to only make troop movements that were “coordinated with the Kurdistan Regional Government.”

This marks the most specific statement out of the State Department on the situation since Iraq regained control over the provincial capital Kirkuk on Monday, following a popular vote of 92 percent in favor of an independent Kurdistan late last month. Previously, the State Department has stuck to general calls for calm on all sides.

Nauert’s statement also declared that the disputed Kurdish areas remained disputed, despite Iraqi authorities crossing into the region.

“The reassertion of federal authority over disputed areas in no way changes their status – they remain disputed until their status is resolved in accordance with the Iraqi constitution,” the statement read.

According to security sources cited by Reuters, Iraqi troops gained control of the last district in Kirkuk on Friday, taking the oil-producing province from Kurdish Peshmerga fighters after three hours of hostilities.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has called the September 25 vote for Kurdish independence illegitimate, and said US policy rejects such unilateral moves.

This week, Kurdish Peshmerga fighters lost large swathes of territory held since 2014 or later, which had been gained during years of war against Islamic State fighters.

‘Replicas’ Panel at NYCC 2017 Ventures into ‘The Matrix’ and ‘Bill & Ted’ Territory https://briefnews.eu/replicas-panel-at-nycc-2017-ventures-into-the-matrix-and-bill-ted-territory/ https://briefnews.eu/replicas-panel-at-nycc-2017-ventures-into-the-matrix-and-bill-ted-territory/#respond Sat, 07 Oct 2017 19:39:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/replicas-panel-at-nycc-2017-ventures-into-the-matrix-and-bill-ted-territory/ Replicas NYCC Panel

How many times can we see the Frankenstein concept of bringing back dead people play out on the big screen, you ask?  Short answer: countless times. Keanu Reeves is starring in Replicas, the latest in a long line of films, mostly told from a male perspective mind you, which tampers with death and recreation. If you haven’t seen it already.

I have nothing against films that explore the idea of cloning. Though, I think BBC America’s small screen gem Orphan Black did an exceptional job taking on themes of feminism, sisterhood, and the politics of science.

But according to Reeves, Replicas is more about how man manipulates nature for his own selfish needs, which makes me significantly less excited about it. “There’s an idea of control, an impulse to create and manifest. This film is having a conversation with that.”

Find out more about what unfolded during the Replicas NYCC panel below.

The actor took the stage at New York Comic Con Thursday evening, seated in front of a standing room-only audience. Truthfully, he could have probably said anything up there, especially to the people in the first few rows who were too busy drooling over the 53-year-old to pay attention to anything he was saying. (I ran into a few of his admirers in the restroom after the panel, and that was all they could talk about).

Admittedly, he looked good. Really good, in what has become his signature all-black attire and chin-length jet black hair. He was joined by director Jeffrey Nachmanoff and writer Stephan Hamel to discuss Replicas, which gives me serious Pet Sematary vibes. The movie is about a synthetic biologist (Reeves) who tries to bring his family back after they were killed in a tragic car accident— and suffers dangerous consequences in the process. That is actually almost exactly like Pet Sematary, minus the whole government intervention thing, which this movie apparently has. But while it surrounds a very controversial subject matter, Nachmanoff says the movie generally remains morally ambiguous. “There are some moral questions, ethical questions about what it means to recreate life and bring people back that we ask in the film,” he said.

He did, however, ask the crowd whether they would ever cheat death. To which the response was a resounding, “NO.”

Both Nachmanoff and Reeves did their best to try to dig into the film’s more serious themes, even how it relates to the Human Genome Project, something that was met with utter silence from the crowd. At one point, Reeves sarcastically hung his head down in shame at some of his own comments, which the audience found hysterical. Nachmanoff tries to save the conversation by getting back to the film, “It asks what makes you you. Are you still you if you’re brought back in a different body?”

Up until this time, it seemed like the only time the audience really responded to anything was when it was mentioned that a cast member or someone was from the same place they lived. Like when Nachmanoff said John Ortiz, who plays the villain in the film, is from Brooklyn, the Brooklyn crowd went WILD.

The audience genuinely gave praise when Reeves and Nachmanoff discussed how the film was shot entirely in Puerto Rico, soon before the devastating hurricane which still has many living without power. The team is actually helping raise money for the island through the Replicas and NYCC websites.

Keanu Reeves Discusses The Matrix and Bill & Ted

But nothing woke up the crowd harder than audience Q&A time, when folks got to ask all the questions that mattered to them—which had nothing to do with Replicas at all.  Are they working on another Bill & Ted film? Yes, Reeves confirmed, which was met with thunderous applause. “It’s called Bill & Ted Face the Music,” he revealed. “They’re still trying to save the world, and they’re still trying to finish the song.  But they’re old with wives and children.”

Full disclosure: I’ve never seen a single Bill & Ted film, but I’m kind of into the idea of an older, wiser Reeve maturing a famously dense though iconic character who may possibly be having a mid-life crisis along with his best friend. (Mind you, he never said anything about the character being wiser or more mature, but this is exactly where my mind went, hoping).

To the question of whether there would be another Matrix movie (which I would actually go outside and picket against); Reeves said “I don’t know anything about it.” Thankfully. The audience agreed with me on this one, though there was one lone person in the crowd who suggested somewhat aggressively that they’d be open to a redo of Matrix Reloaded. I wouldn’t even cosign that.

But a third John Wick movie is already in the works. YES! Reeves said, “We have some good ideas, and we’re excited to tell the next chapter.”  He even joked about a fifth movie. Hey, I could be here for that too.

Legendary investor Byron Wien says the stock market is entering uncharted territory https://briefnews.eu/legendary-investor-byron-wien-says-the-stock-market-is-entering-uncharted-territory/ https://briefnews.eu/legendary-investor-byron-wien-says-the-stock-market-is-entering-uncharted-territory/#respond Fri, 28 Jul 2017 05:15:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/legendary-investor-byron-wien-says-the-stock-market-is-entering-uncharted-territory/ Since the start of the eight-year bull market, stock prices have closely tracked the size of the Federal Reserve’s balance sheet. But that’s quickly changing.

While the Fed’s balance sheet has stayed mostly unchanged in 2017, the S&P 500 has continued to climb, surging roughly 11% year-to-date. The fact that stock indexes continue to make new highs as the Fed prepares to shrink the assets it holds troubles Byron Wien, the vice chairman of Blackstone’s private wealth solutions group.

“This divergence is disturbing, particularly since the Fed is contemplating a balance sheet shrinkage starting in September,” he wrote in a client note. The role of central bank liquidity is “receiving inadequate attention,” he said.

He’s particularly wary of how the accommodative conditions offered by the Fed since 2009 have been used. While the Fed’s unconventional purchases of assets were supposed to stimulate economic growth, Wien estimates that roughly three-quarters of the proceeds have gone into financial assets like stocks, with only one-quarter invested in the real economy.

7 27 17 fed balance sheet vs spx COTDByron Wien / Gavekal Research / Evercore ISI

Wien is specifically focused on productivity growth, which he notes has been declining almost everywhere worldwide over the past decade, compared to the period from 1996 to 2006. This makes it more difficult for companies to generate earnings growth, which has historically been the biggest driver of stock gains.

Yet while these dynamics have placed a huge weight on the shoulders of corporate profit expansion, US corporations have looked up to the task — at least for now.

Fresh off their best quarter in more than five years, companies in the S&P 500 are projected to grow earnings by 8.8% in the second quarter. The full-year 2017 outlook calls for expansion of roughly 12%, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Wien recognizes this, and despite his consternation over stocks continuing to surge as the Fed tightens, he isn’t ready to call the end of the bull market.

“Earnings are expected to break out,” he said. “While the current expansion is more than eight years old, few excesses are apparent and I am optimistic that the next serious downturn is several years away.”
