Italy’s Benetton family is vying with motorbike firms and buyout funds for control of Italian motorcycle brand Ducati, which is being sold by Germany’s Volkswagen, sources involved in the process told Reuters. Volkswagen, whose Audi division controls Ducati, has received several tentative bids with the Benetton family’s investment vehicle Edizione Holding valuing the Monster motorbike maker at $ 1.2 billion, one of the sources said.

As well as Edizione Holding, U.S. buyout fund Bain Capital, which owns a stake in Ski-Doo snowmobiles maker BRB, and two Indian motorbike firms, Eicher Motors and Bajaj Auto, have also bid for Ducati, the sources said. Indian carmaker Eicher controls Royal Enfield, a motorcycle brand established in 1893 which ranks as one of the oldest. Strategic bidders also include U.S. automotive firm Polaris Industries, which earlier this year said it would wind down its struggling Victory Motorcycle brand.

A shortlist of bidders for a second stage of the auction could be selected as soon as Saturday, two of the sources said. Volkswagen adviser Evercore has a long list of bidders including private equity funds such as Ducati’s previous owner Investindustrial, CVC Capital Partners, Advent and PAI, all hoping to outbid industry players, the sources said.

If it gets to the second round, Edizione Holding could seek to form a consortium with a financial investor, two of the sources said, in a bid to secure control of Ducati, whose racers have won the Superbike world championship 14 times, with Carl Fogarty and Troy Bayliss its most successful riders.

Audi, Edizione Holding, Investindustrial, Advent and PAI declined to comment, while the other interested groups were not immediately available for comment.

PRICING CHALLENGES

For some buyout funds, Ducati’s valuation of up to $ 1.4 billion – which sources said is based on a multiple of more than 10 times its core earnings of roughly 100 million euros – is a tall order as they lack the synergies that some motorbike makers could achieve. But Investindustrial founder Andrea Bonomi, who sold Ducati to Audi for about 860 million euros in 2012, is serious about a comeback, one of the sources said.

China’s Loncin Motor was among a group of industry players that initially showed interest in Ducati, alongside Harley-Davidson. The latter has, however, decided against making a bid due to Ducati’s price tag, while it could not be established if Loncin Motor had carried on bidding. Harley Davidson and Loncin were not immediately available for comment.

A successful deal for Ducati, which last year had revenues of 731 million euros, would show Volkswagen boss Matthias Mueller is serious about reversing the company’s quest for size. But offloading Ducati will need the blessing of Volkswagen’s powerful labor unions, which control half the seats on the carmaker’s 20-strong supervisory board, and recently repeated their opposition to a sale. Volkswagen is expected to base its final decision on several factors other than just price, one of the sources said, including being able to sign a straightforward transaction and getting positive feedback from its unions. Toyota is working on developing flying cars, with the aim of having a single driver vehicle ready to fly in time for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The idea is that a small flying car will be able to smoothly transition from driving to the skies, in order to delivery the Olympic torch for its last leg to officially open the games.

The project isn’t yet ready to dazzle the world, as you can see in the Associated Press video above. This early prototype of the car is basically structural scaffolding, batteries and rotors, but it does manage to get about head height before ungracefully returning to earth.

The flying car is being created in partnership with Cartivator Resource Management, a small tech company that Toyota invested nearly $ 400,000 in to help bring this project to life. This test flight took place at a school field in central Japan, near Toyota’s own home base.

Toyota has been exploring a range of new tech and transportation options, including luxury yachts under its Lexus brand. The company is also re-imagining itself as an energy concern — though it just ended a partnership with Tesla it had entered into to co-develop electric vehicle technologies last week.

Next steps for the flying car project include refining the design using the new money invested by Toyota, and hoping to fly with a pilot on board sometime in 2019, ahead of the intended launch of a fully functional vehicle in time for Tokyo’s 2020 Olympic games.

A writers’ strike that could have mirrored the 2007-08 stoppage that had an indelible impact on the TV (as well as film) industry has been averted, as the WGA (Writers Guild of America) and AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) reached a tentative agreement early Tuesday morning, following seven weeks of talks.

Per our sister site Deadline, the three-year TV and film collective bargaining agreement, among other things, will offer better protections to the writers of short-order TV shows — an increasingly common phenomenon that had resulted in decreased paydays for basically working just as many hours.

The WGA’s health plan will also get a boost per the new agreement, which now goes to the WGA West and East’s respective councils for approval, before ratification by guild members.

The AMPTP also agreed to update to a logo not from the 1960s. (Kidding! #4amHumor.)

The WGA strike of 2007-08… well, it was a thing, kids. With no new scripts being churned out for three full months, numerous series saw their seasons trimmed or slashed, some shows (24, Chuck e.g.) had their premieres postponed, and a handful of already low-rated programs (The 4400, NBC’s Bionic Woman reboot… Cavemen) died on the vine. Meanwhile, a few shows (namely daytime soaps) brought in “scab” writers to keep the scripts flowing.

USA Hockey and the women’s national team reached a tentative agreement in their wage dispute that will avert a boycott of the upcoming world championships, according to a USA Today report on Tuesday.

The report, which sourced a person who requested anonymity because the agreement has not been finalised, said terms of the deal were not immediately known and the players were expected to vote on the pact around 12 p.m. ET.

Neither USA Hockey or the players’ lawyer were immediately available for comment when contacted by Reuters.

The report of a tentative deal comes after over a year of efforts by the women’s team to secure higher wages and support from USA Hockey.

The women’s team drew international attention when two weeks ago they threatened to boycott the world championships, which start on Friday in Michigan.

Team USA have won the past three world championships and are scheduled top play their first game of the tournament on Friday against rival Canada.

Microsoft’s embrace of open source software continues, with Azure Service Fabric making the first tentative foray into the open world. Today, the SDK was (mostly) published to GitHub under the MIT license. The team behind the move described it as the “beginning stages” of a wider use of open source.

Service Fabric, first revealed in 2015, grew out of the infrastructure Microsoft developed to build and run large-scale cloud services, including Azure SQL, Cortana, and Skype for Business. It provides scaling and fault tolerance for services, both stateless and stateful, running in containers across clusters of (virtual) machines. It runs in Azure, naturally, but the runtime is also freely downloadable and can be deployed across on-premises Windows systems, or even onto Windows virtual machines in non-Microsoft clouds. A Linux version of the runtime is currently in development, too.

Microsoft has already been using GitHub for tracking feature requests and bugs within Service Fabric. Users of the runtime have expressed a greater interest in the design and features of Service Fabric, and opening up the SDK is seen as the next step in engaging with the community and helping drive the development direction.
