Democrat Mary Peltola smiles at supporters after delivering remarks at a fundraiser on Aug. 12, 2022, in Juneau, Alaska.

  • Mary Peltola told Politico she wasn't "shocked" by her House special election victory in Alaska.
  • The Democratic congresswoman-elect credited her work ethic and reputation as assets in the race.
  • Peltola beat out Sarah Palin and Nick Begich to serve out the remainder of Don Young's term.

Alaska hasn't voted for a Democratic presidential nominee since Lyndon B. Johnson's landslide victory in 1964.

The state last backed a Democrat in a Senate race in 2008, when then-Anchorage Mark Begich won a close contest against veteran Republican lawmaker Ted Stevens.

And for nearly 50 years, Alaska voters sent longtime Republican Don Young to Washington, DC, as its at-large congressman.

But in the race to succeed Young — who passed away in February — former Democratic state Rep. Mary Peltola won a House special election last month in a field that included former Republican Gov. Sarah Palin and Republican Nick Begich III. (Begich is the nephew of the former Democratic senator.)

Despite the long history of GOP triumphs in the Frontier State, Peltola — who will be the first Alaska Native elected to Congress — said she was not surprised by her victory.

In an interview with Politico, she spoke of the tight-knit nature of Alaskan politicians and her embrace of bipartisanship while serving in the legislature — where she also developed a working relationship with Palin, the 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee.

"I was very optimistic," she told the outlet. "The three of us who were in the final round of the special election, we had come out of a field of 48 candidates. And I worked very, very hard."

She continued: "I was on the phone two or three hours a day reaching out to Alaskans across the state. We had a number of events that we hosted to connect with as many voters as I possibly could."

Peltola remarked that her experience in the Alaska House of Representatives was a key part of her background.

"I did have a lot of connections that I had made over the 10 years in the Statehouse," she told Politico. "I developed a reputation over the years that I served in Juneau of being very easy to work with, able to work with anyone in the building — regardless of party."

"Alaska is a small state. Most of the people who are in leadership positions have been here many decades and Alaskans tend to have a long memory. So I was not shocked at the outcome of our race," she added.

The election was held with ranked-choice voting, where voters can indicate on their ballots their ranked preferences. If no candidate has received the majority of the vote in a race, the candidates are eliminated until votes for the top-two finishers are tallied up and a winner is declared.

After the votes were tabulated, Peltola defeated Palin 51.5%-48.5%.

The congresswoman-elect — who will sworn in on Tuesday — will serve out the remaining weeks of Young's term, and will once again face Palin and Begich in November for a full two-year term in office.

I’ve never thought too intensely about what trash can I should buy. Shoes, bags, suitcases, and mattresses? Definitely. But a bin I’m throwing literal trash into? I can’t say it’s top of mind for me.

One of the best tips I’ve learned for being a good boss is the one managers tend to skip https://briefnews.eu/one-of-the-best-tips-ive-learned-for-being-a-good-boss-is-the-one-managers-tend-to-skip/ https://briefnews.eu/one-of-the-best-tips-ive-learned-for-being-a-good-boss-is-the-one-managers-tend-to-skip/#respond Sun, 12 Nov 2017 11:34:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/one-of-the-best-tips-ive-learned-for-being-a-good-boss-is-the-one-managers-tend-to-skip/ boss meetingStrelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design/flickr

  • One major mistake managers often make is forgetting to explain to their teams why they made a certain decision.
  • By explaining decisions, employees better understand top priorities.
  • It also helps them make better decisions themselves.
  • When they’re informed about the larger picture, they feel more engaged and are more motivated to accomplish goals.

There’s so much to learn and master when managing a team: how to give feedback effectively, how to run an effective 1:1, how to delegate, how to develop your team, and more.

One of the secrets I’ve found in managing effectively is also one of the steps that managers skip most often. It’s making sure you always talk about the ‘why.’

Sharing a decision with your team? Tell them why you made it.

Choosing not to take their recommendation for next steps? Tell them why you are going in another direction.

Prioritizing one project over another? Tell them why that makes sense for the business.

It’s easy to skip this step, and focus on just communicating a decision. So, why should you take the time?

1. Your team will learn more about your priorities

One of the most frequent things that’ll happen when you start explaining why you made decisions is that you’ll start sharing more context with your team. The reason you decided to go with A versus B is often that there was also something else going on that they didn’t have visibility into, which was relevant to your priorities.

By sharing that, you’re helping them connect the dots, learn more about how the business works, and understand what is more or less important to you, your boss, and the company.

2. Your team will learn how to make better decisions themselves

Once your team has more context and understands your priorities and why you make decisions, you’ve created a feedback loop!

To pick a silly example, if they brought you two options for snacks and you picked fruit over cookies, they could bring you a number of different options next time. If you explained the decision as being tied to a number of people on the team being gluten-free, they’ll bring you options that fit that criteria and start thinking about the needs of the team as part of the decision. If you made the decision based on budget instead, well, you may get a number of cheaper cookie options next time.

You get the idea. You’re empowering your team to learn and do better next time, which is what management is all about.

3. Your team will be more engaged

When you share what’s happening, your team is informed. When you also share why it’s happening, they’re engaged. When done best, talking about the why ties your work and theirs back to a bigger goal, purpose, or mission, not just the task at hand.

This is what creates the internal motivation and desire to do the work at hand, which I’ve found leads to more creativity, thoughtfulness, and ownership.

I don’t know about you, but I’d love a team that’s constantly learning, making better decisions, and feeling more engaged. So managers, I challenge you for the next week to take the extra few minutes to explain why you’re doing, deciding, and prioritizing the things on your plate.

Delegation helps in motivating employees and makes them better at decision making. They feel the responsibility and try out different ways to get things done. Sometimes, they even surprise you with the quality of their work and smart decisions.

Real-life zombies tend to be the fast ones, neuroscience study suggests https://briefnews.eu/real-life-zombies-tend-to-be-the-fast-ones-neuroscience-study-suggests/ https://briefnews.eu/real-life-zombies-tend-to-be-the-fast-ones-neuroscience-study-suggests/#respond Tue, 24 Oct 2017 11:46:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/real-life-zombies-tend-to-be-the-fast-ones-neuroscience-study-suggests/

In decades of films, the dead have risen from the grave to stalk the living. Classic zombies go slow (a literal plodding approach of death), while modern zombies are often swifter, sometimes speedy. Though science-fiction fans will endlessly debate which is better, a new neuroscience study on the closest thing we have to zombies in real life—those who rise from the dead of sleep—tend to be the snappy kind.

In a small study published Monday in Current Biology, researchers found that sleepwalkers tended to have better locomotor control and awareness than those who don’t wander while out cold. Specifically, researchers gave study participants (when they were awake) a movement test and a mental task to do at the same time. Even though the mental task was known to interfere with motor control, the sleepwalkers could still complete the movement test with the same accuracy and at their normal, brisk pace. But the extra brain work tripped up the non-sleepwalkers: they lurched through the movement task, even though they could perform it quickly when not mentally distracted.

The finding has two main takeaways, the authors argue. First, it hints that the brains of sleepwalkers may be better wired to automate locomotor control and awareness, freeing the body to move about without full consciousness. Secondly, it suggests that there may be waking behavioral tests that potential sleepwalkers could take to help determine if they have the sleep condition.

A habit expert says people come in 4 types — and two of them tend to make the best match https://briefnews.eu/a-habit-expert-says-people-come-in-4-types-and-two-of-them-tend-to-make-the-best-match/ https://briefnews.eu/a-habit-expert-says-people-come-in-4-types-and-two-of-them-tend-to-make-the-best-match/#respond Thu, 14 Sep 2017 16:04:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-habit-expert-says-people-come-in-4-types-and-two-of-them-tend-to-make-the-best-match/ grease dancingParamount Pictures

There are lots of things that determine a couple’s long-term compatibility — their values, their goals, their idea of fun, their commitment to work.

Add to that list “how they respond to expectations.” It’s a rather nebulous and highly unsexy term that turns out to be a big predictor of who you’ll be attracted to.

That’s according to Gretchen Rubin, the bestselling author of multiple books including, most recently, “The Four Tendencies.”

“How do you respond to expectations?” is the question Rubin uses to divide people into four tendencies, or personality types. (You can take Rubin’s quiz to figure out which tendency you fall into.) There are obligers — the biggest category — plus upholders, questioners, and rebels.

Upholders generally meet both inner and outer expectations, meaning they don’t let others or themselves down. Questioners meet inner expectations; they’ll only do something if they think it makes sense.

Obligers meet outer expectations but don’t always meet inner ones; they usually need some form of external accountability. Rebels resist both inner and outer expectations; if you ask a rebel to do something, they’ll likely resist.

Based on the anecdotal evidence she gathered from talking to different couples, Rubin noticed a curious pattern: Rebels tend to pair up with obligers.

When she visited the Business Insider office in September, Rubin said that’s largely because obligers can stomach rebels’ constant resistance — and even enjoy it — whereas questioners and upholders would go nuts.

Ultimately, rebels and obligers have something in common. Rubin said: “There’s a deep affinity between obligers and rebels. Both have this resistance to inner expectation and this gives them this feeling that the world is pushing on them and they want to push back.”

Pushing back is harder for obligers than for rebels, Rubin said — which means the rebel partner can help the obliger partner do what they’d really like to.

Here’s an example, from Rubin, of how this dynamic might play out. The obliger will tell the rebel about her demanding family. The rebel will respond, “Oh my gosh, you do so much for them! Let’s just go off for the weekend and they can figure things out for themselves.” That’s somewhat freeing and reassuring for the obliger.

Rubin admitted that a rebel-obliger relationship can seem a little “exploitative,” because the obliger is taking care of all the housework and boring stuff, while the rebel is off having fun. But she said: “If this works for you — if in your relationship, both people feel like they’re getting a great deal — then that’s fine.”

Yes, your tendency isn’t the only factor that determines the success of your relationship. But it’s probably an under-appreciated one.

We tend not to think enough about how our day-to-day with our partner will unfold: who’ll do the laundry and who’ll say “no” to another PTA meeting. Rubin’s framework is an easy way to take that into account.

The happiest couples — married or not — tend to share a key characteristic https://briefnews.eu/the-happiest-couples-married-or-not-tend-to-share-a-key-characteristic/ https://briefnews.eu/the-happiest-couples-married-or-not-tend-to-share-a-key-characteristic/#respond Sat, 10 Jun 2017 06:21:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-happiest-couples-married-or-not-tend-to-share-a-key-characteristic/ marriage relationship proposal couple lovemattedesign/Flickr

The sun is out, flowers are blooming, and your refrigerator is so cluttered with wedding invitations you can hardly find the handle.

There’s nothing quite like wedding season to get you contemplating the next phase of your relationship. So you’re probably wondering — let’s just say theoretically — how might tying the knot affect my partner and I? Will it make us happier? Strengthen our relationship?

Aside from the enthusiastic friend or extended family member, you probably have loads of anecdotal evidence suggesting that the answers to both of those questions is yes. After all, thousands of Pinterest boards can’t lie — or can they?

Interestingly, the bulk of sociological research on this topic actually suggests that it isn’t marriage that’s the key to lasting happiness, but something far more basic. It all comes down to finding a romantic partner who also happens to be the person you’d call your best friend.

In a recent study of thousands of couples on marriage and happiness, John Helliwell, a University of British Columbia economist and the co-author of the UN World Happiness Report, found evidence suggesting that the most important factor for a lasting, happy relationship was whether or not you see your romantic partner as your closest friend.

Helliwell and his research team looked at data from two large British surveys and the Gallup World Poll. After accounting for couples’ age, gender, income, and health conditions, they found that couples who were best friends and lived together were just as happy as couples who were best friends and married.

In other words, marriage didn’t appear to matter much at all.

Here’s a chart from the study comparing the “life satisfaction” of couples who were married (blue bars) with couples who lived together but were unmarried (red bars). Couples who said their partner was their best friend are on the left.

marriage happiness chartNational Bureau of Economic Research“What immediately intrigued me about the results was to rethink marriage as a whole,” Helliwell recently told the New York Times.

Other research seems to support Helliwell’s findings.

young coupleFlickr / Francisco OsorioFor their 2012 survey of American couples, researchers found that couples who lived together but were not married had higher self-esteem and were happier overall than their married counterparts.

In a recent blog post for Psychology Today, social psychologist Bella DePaulo took a look at a large 2012 review of more than 20 studies of married and divorced couples. Initially, the researchers concluded that marriage made people happier. But taking a closer look at the numbers, DePaulo came to the opposite conclusion.

“Except for that initial short-lived honeymoon effect for life satisfaction,” she writes, “getting married did not result in getting happier or more satisfied. In fact, for life satisfaction and relationship satisfaction, the trajectories over time headed in the less satisfied direction.”

Other studies back up DePaulo’s assertion: A 2011 review of the impact on happiness of major life events found that couples who got married generally felt less happy and less satisfied with their lives over time.

Helliwell prefers to look on the bright side of these findings.

“Maybe what is really important [in a relationship] is friendship, and to never forget that in the push and pull of daily life,” he said.
