It was then that I first heard about the mysterious white temple called Wat Rong Khun. At this time, the main temple building was a base construction without its intricate decorations as caught in the pictures. Yet, it was clear from the picture I saw then that it will develop into an elaborate piece of art.

“A few years passed by and I finally had the occasion to be there in person. I was visually blown away by the purity of the white color, as well as the mirror particles reflections which are part of all the sculptures. I think I spent hours gazing at the details, thinking how impressive it is that all this came out of the imagination of a single person. As I was taking my photos, all I wanted was to do justice to the awe-inspiring work of all the artists, as well as the main person behind the project, Chalermchai Kositpipat. I personally admired the bold grotesqueness with which human desires were represented; it made me reflect on the dark side each of us has inside. The inside of the temple gave me a sense of peace and calmness.

“However, photos there are forbidden. so I could only capture the dark side of the architecture. Maybe it’s for the better. Some things should stay forever photographed in our hearts.”

But the photographs Kovacheva was able to take are stunning, capturing both the beauty and the horror of this unique location. Check them out in our gallery, and see more of Kovacheva’s work on Instagram, Facebook, and her site.

The temple’s authorities say they will appeal the ruling.

Although the 12th century Sabarimala temple in the southern state of Kerala attracts tens of millions of pilgrims every year, women who are in their menstruating years (which the temple defines as between the ages of 10 and 50) have not been allowed to be among them – until now.

“Historically women have been treated with inequality,” India’s Chief Justice Dipak Misra said in the Friday ruling, one of his final judgments before he steps down next week. “Society has to undergo a perception shift.”

The lone dissenting judge on the five-judge bench was, perhaps surprisingly, a female. “Religious practices cannot solely be tested on the basis of the right to equality. It is up to the worshippers, not the court, to decide what is the religion’s essential practice,” Justice Malhotra said.

The case was brought forth by a group of five women who claimed the rule violated the fundamental right to equality and protection from discrimination on the ground of gender, India Today reported.

But according to authorities at the temple, banning women of child-bearing age from entering comes from a centuries-old tradition. They say it is essential to the rites related to Ayyappan, the temple’s chief deity.

They also say they will appeal to the Supreme Court for a review of the ruling.

“We will go for a review petition after getting support from other religious heads,” said A. Padmakumar, president of Travancore Devaswom Board which manages the hilltop temple, as quoted by Reuters.

Menstruating women are regarded as unclean in many Hindu communities, as well as in Nepal, where the government recently made the practice of forcing women into cowsheds while during menstruation illegal.

The Friday ruling is the latest in a number of Supreme Court rulings which have seen India relax many of its conservative and controversial laws. On Thursday, the court decriminalized adultery. Earlier this month, it scrapped a law banning gay sex.

2,200yo Greco-Roman temple uncovered in Egyptian desert https://briefnews.eu/2200yo-greco-roman-temple-uncovered-in-egyptian-desert/ https://briefnews.eu/2200yo-greco-roman-temple-uncovered-in-egyptian-desert/#respond Sat, 07 Apr 2018 09:55:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/2200yo-greco-roman-temple-uncovered-in-egyptian-desert/

A rare Greco-Roman temple has been uncovered in Egypt’s Western Desert. Archaeologists believe it dates back to between 200 BC and 300 AD.

The temple was discovered at the al Salam archaeological site, the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities announced on Wednesday. Two limestone lion statues, bits of pottery, coins, and a sculpture of a man’s head were also found at the site.

The front section of the temple and foundations were found, along with a three-foot thick outer wall and courtyard. The temple is rare in that not many ruins from this era remain.

When archaeologists moved rubble from the area, parts of the temple walls, complete with Greco-Roman designs, were first spotted, Ayman Ashmawy, head of the Egyptian Antiquities Department, explained. The temple’s design is influenced by both ancient Egyptian architecture and that of the Hellenistic and Roman style, which ruled the area during this time.

The temple was discovered near the Siwa Oasis, which is one of the most isolated Egyptian settlements where people are thought to have lived as far back as 10,000 BC. Archaeologists hope to learn more about the life of people living in the Siwa Oasis at this time.

Archaeologists are expected to work on the site over the next year, meaning more artefacts are expected to be found. The temple is just the latest archaeological find to be uncovered in Egypt in recent years.

Discovery of lost Ancient Greek temple ends century-long search https://briefnews.eu/discovery-of-lost-ancient-greek-temple-ends-century-long-search/ https://briefnews.eu/discovery-of-lost-ancient-greek-temple-ends-century-long-search/#respond Thu, 28 Sep 2017 22:11:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/discovery-of-lost-ancient-greek-temple-ends-century-long-search/

Archaeologists digging on Greece’s second largest island have finally uncovered an ancient temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis, the whereabouts of which have eluded researchers for more than 100 years.

The ruins of the religious site were found by the Swiss Archaeological School (SAS) on Euboea, an island north of Athens.

The century-long search was brought to an end during the summer, when the team cut through an external wall to reveal inscriptions, an underground fountain and coins bearing the name ‘Artemis.’

A spokesman for the Greek Ministry of Culture confirmed that buildings of various ages were discovered at the site.

“From some inscribed bases and sealed tiles bearing the name Artemis, it was possible to identify the sanctuary of Artemis Amarysia,” the ministry said in a statement. “The inscriptions refer to the goddess Artemis, to her brother Apollo and to their mother Leto.”

Following the writings of the first-century geographer Strabo, archaeologists had been excavating near Eretria, an area on the southwest coast of the island, since the latter part of the 19th century.

In 2012, however, the SAS team speculated that Strabo had miscalculated his distances after finding the remains of a Byzantine church at a farther distance from Eretria than they expected. The group then switched its search to the base of a hill near Amarynthos, more than six miles (10km) away.

In Greek myth, Artemis was the daughter of Zeus and the Titaness Leto, and was known as the goddess of wild animals, wilderness, childbirth and virginity. Her twin brother Apollo was the god of prophecy, music and poetry.

3 injured in shooting at Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, attackers ‘eliminated’ https://briefnews.eu/3-injured-in-shooting-at-jerusalems-temple-mount-attackers-eliminated/ https://briefnews.eu/3-injured-in-shooting-at-jerusalems-temple-mount-attackers-eliminated/#respond Fri, 14 Jul 2017 06:56:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/3-injured-in-shooting-at-jerusalems-temple-mount-attackers-eliminated/

Three people were injured in a shooting assault on Temple Mount in Jerusalem, according to the Israeli ambulance service. All attackers were neutralized, police confirm.

Two of the three wounded people are in critical condition following the attack near Lions Gate in Jerusalem’s Old City on Friday, according to Israeli ambulance service official Magen David Adom, as cited by Reuters.

All three victims were sent to a Jerusalem hospital.

The district, which is a popular tourist and prayer site, has been closed.

No prayers will be held at the site today, according to Israeli police. Friday prayers at the site were cancelled for the first time in years, according to Haaretz.

Israeli police posted a picture of the attackers’ alleged weapons. Police say that “the terrorists seized” them, but did not disclose any further details.

The attackers’ identities have not been released yet.

Israeli Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan said the assault is still being investigated, according to Haaretz.

“The attack today is a difficult and severe event in which red lines were crossed. The attack is still under investigation and will require of us to review all security arrangements at the [Temple] Mount and its surroundings,” the minister said.

“I call on all public leaders to act to calm the situation and preserve the quiet in Jerusalem.”

In June, a 23-year-old Israeli policewoman was killed and four other people were injured after simultaneous knife and gun assaults in Jerusalem. Although Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL) claimed responsibility for the attack, a Hamas spokesman said that it was carried out by “two Palestinians from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and a third from Hamas.”

In May, Israeli police shot a 16-year-old Palestinian girl after what they say was an attempted knife attack at Damascus Gate in Jerusalem. However, the girl did not pose a lethal threat, according to witness accounts.

Ancient ‘skull cult’ worshipped at world’s oldest temple, says study (PHOTOS) https://briefnews.eu/ancient-skull-cult-worshipped-at-worlds-oldest-temple-says-study-photos/ https://briefnews.eu/ancient-skull-cult-worshipped-at-worlds-oldest-temple-says-study-photos/#respond Thu, 29 Jun 2017 18:46:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ancient-skull-cult-worshipped-at-worlds-oldest-temple-says-study-photos/

Strange carvings found on human remains uncovered at Göbekli Tepe in Turkey suggest the ancient people who worshiped there belonged to a ‘skull cult.’

At 11,000 years old, Göbekli Tepe in southeastern Turkey is considered the world’s oldest temple – and just what went on at the site has perplexed researchers for decades.

Now, however, new research published in Science Advances has shown evidence that the neolithic people who built the site venerated the skulls of the dead.

“The carvings are very deep lines in the bone and are definitely intended…It’s the first evidence we have for carved human skulls anywhere,” the study’s lead author Julia Gresky told The Guardian.

Skull fragments unearthed among thousands of other pieces of bone at the hillside temple bear evidence of carving after heads had been scalped and defleshed. The carvings look very different to other marks on the skulls, according to the researchers.

Fragments belonging to three adults had deep roughly-cut notches. The best-preserved piece even had a hole drilled in the top of the skull. Microscopic investigations show that all changes were made with a flint tool after the skull’s owner had died.

Researchers say the uniqueness of the modifications point to the likelihood of it being part of a cult ceremony, with the carvings suggesting rituals which had a great significance for the society.

Other artefacts found at the site also support the theory that those who visited Göbekli Tepe – there is no evidence that people lived there – worshipped the skulls of the dead. A carving on one of the pillars shows a human who has just lost their head.

Skull cults played an important role in the Neolithic Near East, the researchers explain. The neolithic people who visited the site believed power from the dead could be transferred to the living. The skulls were frequently decorated with paint or shells of other materials.

What happened to Indiana Jones’ Temple of Doom sidekick Short Round? LOOK at him now https://briefnews.eu/what-happened-to-indiana-jones-temple-of-doom-sidekick-short-round-look-at-him-now/ https://briefnews.eu/what-happened-to-indiana-jones-temple-of-doom-sidekick-short-round-look-at-him-now/#respond Sat, 10 Jun 2017 12:16:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/what-happened-to-indiana-jones-temple-of-doom-sidekick-short-round-look-at-him-now/

Indiana Jones And The Temple of Doom is back on our TV screens today.

Way back in 1984, a 13-year-old kid with no previous film experience almost stole the entire movie from huge star Harrison Ford and a beguiling Kate Capshaw as the beautiful Willie Scott.

Ke Quan had emigrated to the US from South Vietnam and made a spectacular debut in Hollywood in the Steven Spielberg adventure blockbuster in 1984.

His stardom only lasted a few brief years and he virtually disappeared, but incredibly he will be making a very rare appearance in a few days at a fan event in the US with fellow child star Noah Hathaway from The NeverEnding Story.

Willie Jones and Indy fall off the side of a building and land in the back of a huge white car, with a tiny driver.

Short Round sums it up perfectly: “Wow, holy smoke. Crash landing!”

His next phrase of “hold onto your potatoes” doesn’t make complete sense, but nor does a small child driving a car with wooden blocks strapped to his feet.

WATCH THE CLIP NEXT:

Short Round stole every scene he was in and even saved the day at the very end when he helps Indy snap out of his trains at his personal risk to himself. He is a teeny tiny hero with huge charm and bravery and audiences immediately demanded more.

Quan was soon back on the big screen with another of the 1980’s most beloved films. In 1985 he played Data in The Goonies, alongside Josh Brolin, Sean Astin and Corey Feldman.

Yet again Quan played a plucky tyke with more guts than sense.

In the following scene he faces down the grown-up baddies armed with a pop-up boxing glove.

His Hollywood career, unfortunately never lived up to such huge early promise.

Minor roles in 1991’s Breathing Fire and Encino Man the following year were his only other US movies.

He had a minor success on TV with the fifth season of the sitcom Head of the Class with Billy Connolly in 1991 but the show was cancelled.

Can also starred in several Japanese and Hong Kong movies and had success with the 1983 Mandarin language TV show The Big Eunuch and the Little Carpenter which ran for forty episodes.

Quan actually spent some time in the UK when he studied at Manchester University.

He also put his Indiana Jones action experience to use when he studied Taekwondo and world as a stunt choreographer on the original 2000 X-Men movie and 2001’s Jet Li sci-fi blockbuster The One.

Mysteriously, since then he has almost disappeared with almost no socal media presence.

However, a recent post from Fanboy Expo revealed he will be making a “rare appearance” at the Knoxville ComicCon in just a few weeks, from June 23-25.

He will be joied by Noah Hathaway, the young Atreyu from Neverending Story.

Hidden statue of Queen Tiye, grandmother of Tutankhamun, uncovered in Egypt temple (PHOTOS) https://briefnews.eu/hidden-statue-of-queen-tiye-grandmother-of-tutankhamun-uncovered-in-egypt-temple-photos/ https://briefnews.eu/hidden-statue-of-queen-tiye-grandmother-of-tutankhamun-uncovered-in-egypt-temple-photos/#respond Sun, 26 Mar 2017 15:53:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hidden-statue-of-queen-tiye-grandmother-of-tutankhamun-uncovered-in-egypt-temple-photos/

A statue believed to be of King Tutankhamun’s grandmother has been discovered accidentally by archaeologists working in an ancient mortuary temple in Egypt.

European archaeologists studying areas of the King Amenhotep III Funerary Temple along the west bank of the River Nile came across the alabaster carving. According to the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities, it was uncovered after a section of a sculpture to King Amenhotep III was lifted up and moved.

It is believed that the previously unnoticed statue is in honor of Queen Tiye, wife of King Amenhotep III and grandmother to boy-pharaoh Tutankhamun.

Dr. Khaled El Enany (pictured above), Egyptian Minister of Antiquities, described the queen’s figurine as “beautiful, distinguished and unique.”

Restoration work will now begin on the piece, which displays intricate carvings potentially dating back centuries. The King Amenhotep III Funerary Temple was built between 1390 and 1353 BC to hold the remains of royal Egyptians after their deaths, according to the World Monuments Fund.

A statue to Queen Tiye had, until now, never been found inside the temple. The discovery comes more than 100 years after her mummified body was found in the Valley of the Kings by French archaeologist Victor Loret.

Earlier this month, the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities showed off another historical find in the form of a large statue pulled from a wasteland in a Cairo suburb.

Initially said to be of Pharaoh Ramses II, the Egyptian cultural agency now believes the massive effigy depicts Psamtik I – the first king of Egypt’s 26th Dynasty.
