He continued: “But the truth is, especially for garden designers,

“They’re so busy with their clients’ gardens, they often don’t have time to look after their own.”

Introducing his Gardeners’ World guest Monty added: “That was the case for many years for Nick.

“However, the events of the past year meant that for the first time in ages, he could turn his skills to his own garden.”

Carol Kirkwood left disappointed as BBC Breakfast ‘guests’ leave report: ‘Live telly!’ https://briefnews.eu/carol-kirkwood-left-disappointed-as-bbc-breakfast-guests-leave-report-live-telly/ https://briefnews.eu/carol-kirkwood-left-disappointed-as-bbc-breakfast-guests-leave-report-live-telly/#respond Wed, 14 Oct 2020 08:25:48 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/carol-kirkwood-left-disappointed-as-bbc-breakfast-guests-leave-report-live-telly/

With rutting season underway, Carol Kirkwood was hoping to bring BBC Breakfast viewers a glimpse at the beasts live from Bushy Park, London this morning. The area is famous for having deer roam free and Carol was on hand to inform Dan Walker, Louise Minchin and BBC One viewers the dangers the animals can pose as well as praising the spectacle they can also provide. However, as the cameras cut to Carol for one of her weather reports, she was left disappointed viewers had missed the chance to see the creatures, claiming: “It’s live telly.”

Just as the clock had passed 7am, Dan and Louise cut to Carol in Bushy Park as she shared an update on the weather and how her sightings were going.

“Bushy Park in South West London is a deer park,” she informed Dan and Louise. “And it has roughly 320 fallow deer in it over the course of the year.

“We’re in rutting season at the moment, that lasts from October to early November and we’ve been listening to the roar of the stags this morning.”

Carol then detailed the warning signs the antlered guests could cause, despite them being fascinating to see in action.

“Let’s talk about the red stags,” she continued. “In rutting season they physically change,

“So a well-developed, full-grown red stag can weigh about a quarter of a ton and they can run at 30 miles per hour.

“So it’s no surprise the Royal Parks are warning us they are wild animals and not to get close and take a selfie or something like that.”

Carol went on: “The advice being staying 50 metres away from them,

“And we’ve seen a few of them crossing the road but, as ever, live telly, as soon the cameras come on, woo, off they go.”

Dan and Louise were quick to make a joke about their omission as the action returned to the studio.

“Carol, they’re not scared of you,” Louise quipped to her co-star.

Dan weighed in: “At least they’re at a safe distance, Carol. Thank you for the warning.”

BBC Breakfast continues weekdays at 6am on BBC One.

Sky is boosting its 4K content with a host of new shows and movies launching on the Sky Q platform this month.

The satellite TV firm had been promising a big 4K Ultra HD push and now it seems more pin-sharp content is on its way.

4K offers four times the resolution of standard HD and is currently the best quality being broadcast to UK homes.

Sky has just announced its full 4K lineup for August which includes movies such as Peter Rabbit, Justice League and Jumanji.

There’s also some top sporting action including England’s test with India and the Belgium Grand Prix.

If you have a Sky Q 2TB box and a 4K TV here’s all the shows and movies coming to your television this month.

Along with more 4K shows being beamed to homes .

Arriving in the coming months will be an update which includes improved personalisation with the addition of individual profiles and a new kids mode will stop the younger members of the family accessing inappropriate content.

And High Dynamic Range (HDR) will be coming in 2019 which will boost image quality even further.

The firm also says it is working on a new technology to make its voice search more comprehensive.

The upgrade was revealed in Sky’s financial statement last week with the firm divulging a hands-free TV experience could arrive before the end of the year.

which, with over 10 million requests a month, is clearly a popular addition.

But it seems this is now being taken to a new level with a plan to make the living room a totally hands-free area.

Sky has even teased the feature with an advert showing a woman searching for her remote – the tagline reads “You can’t lose your voice under the sofa.”

The Top British Telly Americans Can Stream Right Now https://briefnews.eu/the-top-british-telly-americans-can-stream-right-now/ https://briefnews.eu/the-top-british-telly-americans-can-stream-right-now/#respond Wed, 08 Mar 2017 03:35:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-top-british-telly-americans-can-stream-right-now/
Still: Netflix

Talk to any British expat in the US and ask them what they miss most from home, and it’s likely to be one of three things: free healthcare, Cadbury’s Dairy Milk, and British TV. Specifically, Brits like me miss iPlayer, the BBC’s free service that allows you to stream BBC TV shows—if you’re in the UK. If you’re not, you can only access radio programs, which is great if you miss Radio 4 but not if you want to stay caught up on Doctor Who or The Great British Bake Off. Instead, expats have to resort to illegal streaming sites or VPNs to access many of their favorite shows.

Which is why, when I heard about BritBox, a British TV streaming service designed for Americans, I sat up straighter in my big American pants. Was it true? Would I finally be able to get iPlayer in the US?

Not quite. BritBox, a $ 6.99-a-month service from the BBC and ITV that launched today, isn’t exactly iPlayer for Americans. It’s more like Netflix, but only for British stuff and shows that are available “as soon as 24-hours after UK broadcast,” according to the BBC’s press release. Unfortunately, however, right now, it’s focused on archives of older shows, like Miss Marple, Blackadder, and The Office.

But luckily, BritBox isn’t the only destination for English television. In fact, there are plenty of great shows to be found on other streaming platforms, like Netflix and Hulu. So allow me, Gizmodo’s resident tea-swilling, meat pie-loving Brit, to recommend some of the most brilliant British telly available now on popular streaming services. If that’s quite alright.

The Great British Bake Off

I resisted The Great British Bake Off (known in America as The Great British Baking Show, which, ugh) for a long time because things that are popular and loved by well-adjusted people tend to alienate me. But last year, in search of something comforting during the darkest point of election season, I finally gave in, and I have never looked back. The pacing of the challenges is enough to keep you hooked but slow enough to be relaxing, the contestants are uniformly sweet and likable, and hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins are thoroughly adorable. (Plus, judge Paul Hollywood looks like a cross between Alec Baldwin and Guy Fieri.) Only three of the seasons are available right now, but they’re cracking good ones. (Netflix)

Still: Netflix

Father Ted

Father Ted doesn’t quite have the American penetration of The Office or Peep Show, but it’s just as good. The show is about three priests, living on an isolated island off the coast of Ireland, and, like all the best British comedies, is largely about how awful and stupid their main characters are. Ted is obsessed with getting away from Craggy Island, preferably via fame and fortune; Father Dougal is too stupid to tell whether a cow is small, or merely far away; Father Jack is a disgusting drunk. It only feels a little dated, and unlike so many sitcoms, the quality remains consistent right to the end. (Hulu)

The Thick of It

A darker but funnier predecessor to HBO’s Veep, The Thick of It is another of Armando Iannucci’s brilliant contributions to our otherwise garbage world (along with I’m Alan Partridge and TheDay Today). The show follows a fictional low-ranking government department and its venal, hapless staff, who spend most of the day trying not to fuck up and throwing biting insults at each other. It’s worth watching just for the Machiavellian Malcolm Tucker, played by Peter Capaldi, but every episode in its short run is wonderful. Don’t miss the outtakes when you’re done, too. (Hulu)

The Office

You probably already know that the original version is good, but it is. It’s very good. Watch it, or I’ll put your stapler in a jelly. (Netflix)

Peep Show

Another obvious-but-entirely-necessary pick, Peep Show is required viewing for those with a strong enough stomach to handle joining Mark and Jez in the most awkward, claustrophobic situations. The penultimate season dips a bit in quality, but it’s worth watching all nine. Once you’ve watched the whole run, watch the appalling pilot of the American version to understand why some things should not be transported across the Atlantic. (Hulu)

Still: Hulu

Green Wing

One of the most original and quirky comedies out there, Green Wing, which first aired in 2004, is entirely unique and extremely funny. It’s set in a hospital but it’s more about surreal situations and a top-shelf love story than medicine. (Netflix, Hulu)

Blackadder

Possibly the all-time best British sitcom, there are only 24 episodes of the historical sitcom Blackadder (though you shouldn’t bother with the first season), but each is a classic. It aired in the ‘80s and features young versions of legends like Hugh Laurie, Miranda Richardson, and Stephen Fry. The last season, set in the First World War, is legendary in the UK for its devastating final scene. Start with Season 2, set in Elizabethan England, and try not to watch all of it in one night. (Hulu)

Still: Hulu

Fleabag

This recommendation comes straight from my British and actually-still-in-Britain mother, so it’s very authoritative. A little like Peep Show but with a female lead, Fleabag is extremely funny but only kind of a comedy—it’s also heartbreaking and bitingly honest. (Amazon Prime)

QI

One thing Britain does well that America barely does at all is the panel show, which boils down to getting several funny people together to sit around and make jokes. Possibly the best example of this genre is QI, which stands for Quite Interesting, where quizmaster Stephen Fry—who has sadly left the show—asks questions that are designed to elicit interesting conversation. Points are awarded for being interesting as well as correct. It’s kind of pretentious, extremely British, and very good to fall asleep to. There are only three seasons out of a total of 14, unfortunately, but it’s enough for Stephen to soothe you to sleep for a good while. (Hulu)

Amazon’s internet-connected Echo speaker has won every award going since it launched late last year and few can disagree that it didn’t deserve every one of them.

Now one of its biggest and best features is joining another of Amazon’s most popular products.

The Fire TV Stick, which plugs straight into your TV’s HDMI port, has just received a major refresh and now includes Alexa – Amazon’s clever personal assistant.

This added cloud-based voice service means users can search for things such as TV shows, latest weather and news reports via a new voice-controlled remote.

Alexa can also show the latest football scores, traffic issues and even order a taxi via the TV.

Users can also use their voice to fast forward and rewinding content with a simple phrase, such a  “jump ahead two minutes”, instantly skipping through content

Along with voice control, Amazon has also made its Fire TV Stick faster with a powerful quad-core processor and upgraded Wi-Fi tucked inside its small shell.

And the new Fire Stick includes a completely redesigned interface that makes finding what to watch even easier.

This updated on-screen design delivers video trailers and content screenshots to help customers access the content they’re likely to want to watch – without the need to open and close multiple apps.

There’s also good news for anyone who loves Netflix as Amazon has incorporated quick access to this rival content.

This means a search for a TV show will instantly reveal the best and most cost-effective way to watch – so if something is on Netflix and you’re signed into your account this will be the first option you’ll see.

Unlike Amazon’s Fire TV box, the new Stick device can only stream in 1080p and not full 4K Ultra HD resolution but Amazon says the new 802.11ac MIMO Wi-Fi and Advanced Streaming and Prediction (ASAP) for Amazon Video, means fluid performance without any buffering.

Speaking about the new device Jorrit Van der Meulen, Vice President, Amazon Devices International, said: “Fire TV Stick is our fastest-selling UK device ever and today we’re making it better,

“The all-new Amazon Fire TV Stick has been completely redesigned with incredible performance, powerful voice search and the included Alexa-powered remote to deliver instant access to a vast selection of movies, TV shows, games and Alexa skills.”

The all-new Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote is available for pre-order beginning today with it shipping to customers on April 6.

And even with all the new features Amazon has managed to keep the cost down to just £39.99.

The all-new Fire TV Stick will also be available at Dixons Carphone, Argos, John Lewis, Tesco, Maplin & Shop Direct.
