Not every headline made us smile during this busy year of television news. There were also announcements that broke our hearts, including the deaths of many beloved TV stars.
Throughout the last 12 months, we said goodbye to more than 50 memorable personalities from the small screen, who we’re remembering in our latest Year in Review photo gallery. And 2019 was a particularly tough year, as we lost TV staples such as Beverly Hills, 90210 and Riverdale vet Luke Perry, The Mary Tyler Moore Show‘s Valerie Harper, longtime Sesame Street puppeteer Caroll Spinney and showbiz legend Doris Day.
Some of the year’s deaths were less high-profile, but nonetheless tragic — and we weren’t just mourning those in front of the camera. Behind-the-scenes contributors, such as Broad City writer Kevin Barnett and Raven’s Home showrunner Eunetta Boone, also left a void in the TV landscape.
And lest you think our In Memoriam roundup is only reserved for humans, we’re also mourning the deaths of memorable on-screen animals, such as Stewart, the dog behind Brooklyn Nine-Nine‘s Cheddar, and the Internet icon that was Grumpy Cat.
Scroll through the attached gallery — or click here for direct access — to look back at the stars we lost in 2019, then drop a comment with your own fond memories of the celebrities who passed away.

Some movies and TV shows are so iconic that even the fake products from them become well known. That’s why Gallery 1988 put together a second edition of their Product Placement show honoring some of the most beloved fake products from film and television.
For the Gallery 1988 Product Placement 2018 show, artists like Danny Haas, Dave Perillo, Doug LaRocca, Joel Hunter, Jen Taylor, Nathan Ebersole, Ryan Brinkerhoff and many more creating posters, advertisements and more pay tribute to things like the Remembrall from Harry Potter, Snake Juice from Parks and Recreation, the night vision goggles from Jurassic Park and much more.

Frankly, I’m amazed that there hasn’t been a piece like the one above for the Zoltar wish-granting machine from Big. Meanwhile, the Cones of Dunshire from Parks and Recreation gets a Dungeons & Dragons style players guide, and the vacuum haircut machine known as the Suck Kut from Wayne’s World sucks your will to live. Plus, it’s October, so there’s no better time to pick up some special masks from Nichols Hardware for Halloween.
These are just some of our favorite pieces from the new show, all of which are for sale right now from the Gallery 1988 website. The edition sizes vary from piece to piece, as does the price of each print and the size as well. As of now, almost all the prints are still for sale, but if there’s one that catches your eye, you’ll want to go pick it up right away so you don’t miss your chance.

There could soon be another new way to watch TV as Amazon looks set to launch a rival to the likes of Sky and Virgin Media.
According to The Telegraph, the online retail giant is currently testing a new smart TV which could bring direct access to its TV shows and movies.
Amazon Prime already has a huge array of content and that’s about to grow even larger with the recent sporting announcements.
Earlier this year Amazon announced that it had secured the domestic broadcasting rights to 20 live Premier league matches from 2019, including Boxing Day fixtures, and weekly highlights on its Prime Video service, only available to Amazon Prime members at a cost of £79 a year.
Speaking after the announcement Jay Marine, Vice President of Prime Video in Europe, said: “We are always looking to add more value to Prime, and we’re delighted to now offer, for the first time, live Premier League matches to Prime members at no extra cost to their membership.
“The Premier League is the most watched sports league in the world.
“Over these two December fixture rounds Prime members will be able to watch every team, every game, so no matter which Premier League team you support, you’re guaranteed to see them play live on Prime Video.”
Amazon already has the rights to the us Open Tennis, ATP World Tour Tennis events and NFL American Football games.
To watch Amazon Prime Video you currently need a streaming device or app to view what the company has on offer.
It’s thought this new TV would bring instant access to Amazon’s library of shows and sporting coverage with the device running the firm’s Fire OS.
It’s thought the new TV, which is being designed by a consortium led by Chinese firm Huawei, is currently being tested for UK compliance.
There’s no word on whether these rumours are true or when the TV will launch but it could be a concern for its rivals.
Amazon has had a stellar year with its own-brand devices becoming some of the biggest selling technology.
Its Alexa-powered Echo speaker has sold millions across the world and with it currently on sale for under £60 that figure is only likely to get bigger.
It’s an antipodean hybrid, a story about a widowed Australian journalist who pens an 800-word column each week about living in a small coastal town in New Zealand called Weld with his two teenage children.
If you ignore his straight-to-camera homilies, concentrate on the comedy-drama and squint a little you could almost be watching Cold Feet.
It’s now in its second series but all episodes are on iPlayer.
Monday’s show included plots on condoms, convicts and cricket. In that order.
Lead character George Turner, quite the charmer, is a ladies’ man who has rediscovered surfing and gets plenty of attention from potential partners, which he brilliantly messes up. It’s “bonza”, mate.

“It was like Superman returning to Krypton and realizing that this is what home feels like,” Jas Waters says from Paris, reflecting on her career path. With writing credits for NBC’s Emmy Award-winning This Is Us, plus VH1’s The Breaks and Comedy Central’s Hood Adjacent With James Davis, Waters has taken a rather unconventional journey to finding her home in the writers’ room. But, like Clark Kent at the Daily Planet, she kept her head down and did the work while waiting to show off her superpowers. “I was not an alien. I was just on the wrong planet.”
Today, while working on This Is Us’ third season, Waters is also writing for the forthcoming Showtime series Kidding starring Jim Carrey. And as a Black woman in an industry in which just 4.8 percent of TV writers are people of color, she’s doing her part to produce nuanced and authentic portrayals of Black characters and storylines touching on racial subjects.
Despite her success — and the emergence of Ava DuVernay, Ryan Coogler, Lena Waithe and others — in a climate that appears to support more fully realized portrayals of African-Americans, Waters still finds herself fighting for the culture.
Waters relocated to Los Angeles but was quickly humbled — or, as she puts it, “crapped out spectacularly.”
“Jas has a bracing, strong, personal perspective; it was a persuasive, original voice at our table,” says This Is Us co-executive producer Don Roos, who credits Waters with pushing to flesh out more of character Beth’s Black immigrant family experience — and the show will in season three. That’s one victory in what could well be a career full of battles in writers’ rooms where the Black experience is woefully underrepresented. But it’s a battle that Waters was built for.
Born in Evanston, Illinois, and raised mostly by her grandmother in a one-bedroom apartment in a senior citizens home, Waters remembers accompanying her street-hustler-turned-minister father to movies that were in no way appropriate for the preteen. But he made a point to educate his daughter on the meaning of what she saw on-screen.
“My dad’s philosophy was that I could handle anything as long as he could explain it to me,” the 30-something reflects. At age 9, encouraged by her father, Waters penned her first script and got hooked on the idea of writing for television and film.
An admittedly underachieving student who barely graduated high school, Waters stepped out for a year to work on a script before enrolling in Columbia College Chicago. A chance run-in with ER actor Eriq La Salle was the first of several gear-shifting moments.
“I boldly asked if he needed an intern,” she says with a laugh. “He asked how long did I have, and I responded: ‘How long would it take?’ He made me wait outside of his trailer for five hours.”
La Salle helped Waters land a one-day internship that turned into a four-year stint as a production assistant on ER. She also got gigs assistant-directing on the many commercials and feature films that blew through the Windy City.
In 2003, Waters relocated to Los Angeles but was quickly humbled — or, as she puts it, “crapped out spectacularly” — and beat it back to Chicago. Put off by what she’d seen in Hollywood (“I learned who I wasn’t.”), Waters decided to jump-start a career in entertainment journalism. She launched an urban lifestyle blog, FlyStyleLife, in 2007 and got pulled to New York, where she picked up side jobs producing music videos.
And then the gears shifted again: Waters — who was undergoing a massive body transformation, losing over 100 pounds — ended up being cast on the VH1 reality series TheGossip Game in 2013. The celebrity lifestyle didn’t do it for her — but being on set reignited her old passion.
After wrapping the one (and only) season of TheGossip Game, Waters dropped everything to focus on her first TV pilot. She took another chance on Los Angeles, where she met an ambitious young agent who believed in her script — soon she had her first writers’ room job for VH1’s The Breaks.
She remembers texting her agent in the early weeks asking, “Are you sure that this is my job?” Waters scored another writing gig with Hood Adjacent and was officially on her way.
During a hiatus from both shows, she spent New Year’s Day 2017 on a beach telling God she was ready to level up. He answered, but not in the way she expected. Five days after returning home, she found herself unemployed when both shows failed to renew her contract. But rather than retreat, Waters dug in her heels. “The highs and lows happen so much in my life that this time I made a decision to not be scared.”
And the payoff came when her agent submitted her name for the 12-person writers’ room of This Is Us, one of the 10 top-rated shows of 2017. Hired for season two — and one of just three writers of color — Waters wasn’t shy when the interaction between the show’s Black characters felt unnatural.
“I believe wholeheartedly in protecting the authenticity of the story,” she says. “That’s my job. If something feels inauthentic, I have to say something.”
Waters will keep speaking up as long as the pool of TV writers is so lacking in diversity — a 2017 report found that two-thirds of shows had no Black writers. “The challenges that she may face in the future really lies within the industry and how it embraces women of color in positions of prestige in the creative space,” Datwon Thomas of Vibe magazinesays. “The measure of fantastic work should be a level playing field for all.”
With This Is Us charging into its third season, Waters is doing double duty with her work on Kidding, Carrey’s first TV show since 1990, debuting later this year. She’s amazed at where she’s landed, but she knows that L.A.’s a fickle town that promises nothing, and that good fortune can vanish with yesterday’s headlines.
“I never saw this [coming],” Waters says, “but somehow this is where I am, so I guess that’s where I’m supposed to be.”

The 74-year-old was walking the red carpet at The Olivier Awards when she made the bid for TV producers to give older talent a chance to present and feature on shows past retirement.
In 2009, Alesha Dixon, then 28, controversially replaced Arlene, then 66, as a Strictly Come Dancing judge, sparking claims of ageism against the BBC.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Arlene said: “I guess it just needs to keep rolling along as it is because they’re not short of viewers.”
She then added: “I want me on your TV screens more! I’m very, very passionate about there really should be older women on television.”
Revealing her reasons why, Arlene said: “I think it’s for the good of kids.
“Otherwise they just get used to thinking that you have to be 14 to be on TV.”
The dancer was clad in a vintage black jumpsuit, accompanied by a pink Aspinal of London bag.
However, with the guests walking the red carpet in the rain, Arlene was trying hard to keep dry.
She smiled: “I’m very good, I’m very wet! I’ve got these thin shoes on and my feet are soaking. I’m glad I’ve got an umbrella though, I’m delighted!”
The Olivier Awards celebrate the world-class status of London theatre, and are Britain’s most prestigious stage honours.
Having worked as a theatre director for many years, Arlene revealed that it’s “a thrill” just to be there.
Arlene continued: “I love The Olivier Awards. Even when you’ve got nothing to do with them.
“Just sitting in your seat and watching all those performances one after the other from every show… it’s a thrill.”
The choreographer was not part of this year’s show, with the cast of Hamilton putting on a performance for the show opening.
Arlene said: “I haven’t choreographed anything for tonight. I mean, I wasn’t asked. But I’m not in London very much working on Starlight Express in Germany. So I’ve only just got off a plane!
“I’m hoping they bring Starlight Express back to the UK. At the moment, it’s an exciting show, it’s very different.”
Arlene added that the show now has a modern feel, with both genders playing the title roles.
She added: “It’s really kind of updated. New songs, new characters. Mixed gender, because it was 1984 and males were engines, females were carriages. So lots of changes but lots of excitement.
“Let’s hope it’s a success when it opens there in June – and we come to the UK. After Starlight, I’m directing A Little Princess, Andrew Lippa’s new musical. A one-off concert at the Royal Festival Hall on April 28th.
“Then I’m going to work at The Bridge with Nick Hytner on the Alan Bennett play… with a bit of music and dance, Allelujah!”
The Olivier Awards will broadcast tonight on ITV at 10.20pm.
Wan? Well, his wife seemed to have inexplicably left him and his three children to fend for themselves.
The start of writer Danny Brocklehurst’s three-part drama was both subtle and enthralling, playing with your sympathies all along. We instantly sided with Greg (Eccleston) although you couldn’t help but think a darker plot line was double parked around the next corner.
Many things pointed to this. He was reading a book by Jon Ronson in a bar while waiting for an internet date to arrive. I’ve never seen that happen. Second, his first foray into conversation with his date involved a discussion about rubbish collection.
Still, we all know how traumatic it can be. We’re soon to convert to wheelie bins.
“It’s been a while,” he told his date. It’s going to be a while longer too, grieving Greg.
Finally Greg found a connection with the sandwich lady who visited his garage every day, now offering him substantially more than his regular tuna mayonnaise. But he wisely turned down the meal deal on their first encounter.
She was the best thing since sliced bread until she moved in and tempted the children to indulge in a friendly whisky at the dinner table. Bless you Brenna.
So 19 years married and now on the scrap heap with only his vinyl to keep him company.
Life is never that simple. Expect Greg to have been fiddling emission tests for Brenna’s big brother when we return next week. It might get really serious. What a relief, however, to connect with a BBC drama.
An early Easter miracle.
