A Webb Telescope image is being used to push malware https://briefnews.eu/a-webb-telescope-image-is-being-used-to-push-malware/ https://briefnews.eu/a-webb-telescope-image-is-being-used-to-push-malware/#respond Tue, 06 Sep 2022 02:53:17 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/a-webb-telescope-image-is-being-used-to-push-malware/ One of the first images taken by the James Webb Telescope that was released by NASA was the "sharpest infrared image of the distant universe to date." It's a wondrous photo showing a detailed cluster of galaxies. It's also currently being used by bad actors to infect systems with malware. Security analytics platform Securonix has identified a new malware campaign that uses the image, and the company is calling it the GO#WEBBFUSCATOR.

The attack starts with a phishing email containing a Microsoft Office attachment. Hidden within the document's metadata is a URL that downloads a file with a script, which runs if certain Word macros are enabled. That, in turn, downloads a copy of Webb’s First Deep Field photo (pictured above) that contains as a malicious code masquerading as a certificate. In its report about the campaign, the company said all anti-virus programs were unable to detect the malicious code in the image.

Securonix VP Augusto Barros told Popular Science that there are a couple of possible reasons why the bad actors chose to use the popular James Webb photo. One is that the high-resolution images NASA had released come in massive file sizes and can evade suspicion in that regard. Also, even if an anti-malware program flags it, reviewers might pass it over since it's been widely shared online in the past couple of months.

Another interesting thing of note about the campaign is that it uses Golang, Google’s open-source programming language, for its malware. Securonix says Golang-based malware are rising in popularity, because they have flexible cross-platform support and are more difficult to analyze and reverse engineer than malware based on other programming languages. Like other malware campaign that starts with a phishing email, though, the best way to avoid being a victim of this attack is to avoid downloading attachments from untrusted sources.

Russia lost control of an orbiting radio telescope https://briefnews.eu/russia-lost-control-of-an-orbiting-radio-telescope/ https://briefnews.eu/russia-lost-control-of-an-orbiting-radio-telescope/#respond Sun, 13 Jan 2019 08:38:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/russia-lost-control-of-an-orbiting-radio-telescope/

Russia’s astronomy program is facing a significant setback. The country’s orbital Spektr-R radio telescope has stopped responding to commands since January 11th. While it’s still transmitting signals, the satellite effectively can’t be used for future tasks in its current state. The space agency Roscosmos said it would next try to regain control and fix issues on January 13th at 2PM Moscow time (6AM Eastern), but it’s not clear what would happen after that.

Spektr-R has enjoyed a long lifespan. Russia launched it in 2011, and it was only supposed to serve through 2014. It’s been considerably useful for studying radio waves around the universe. Still, losing it would represent a significant setback — especially for a country that recently lost a rocket. It’s also likely to be nerve-wracking for astronomers who dealt with the Hubble Space Telescope’s gyroscope failure back in October.

NASA’s Chandra telescope follows Hubble into a shutdown https://briefnews.eu/nasas-chandra-telescope-follows-hubble-into-a-shutdown/ https://briefnews.eu/nasas-chandra-telescope-follows-hubble-into-a-shutdown/#respond Sat, 13 Oct 2018 23:29:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nasas-chandra-telescope-follows-hubble-into-a-shutdown/

NASA sure hasn’t been having a great time with its telescopes. The Chandra X-ray Observatory has gone into safe mode and halted all its science operations a few days after Hubble shut down due a gyroscope failure. According to the agency, Chandra’s transition into safe mode was possibly triggered by an issue that also has something to do with its gyroscope, the component in charge of pointing and stabilizing the telescope.

Chandra went into safe mode on October 10th at around 10:55 AM ET. It started using its backup hardware after the shutdown and shifted its solar panels to get maximum sunlight. Thankfully, the agency concluded after analyzing data from the transition that its scientific instruments are safe and sound. The Chandra observatory uses X-ray technology to keep an eye on black holes and supernova remnants, among other things.

Like the Hubble, Chandra is also getting long in the tooth: it was only supposed to last for five years, but it’s been operating for the past 19. Investigation is still underway, but Chandra astronomer Jonathan McDowell said it’s just a coincidence that the two high-profile observatories went down almost at the same time. NASA seems confident that the telescope can go back to normal operations, though, and expects it to be able to “continue carrying out forefront science for many years to come.”

NASA placed its venerable Hubble Space Telescope into a “safe mode” on Friday evening because of gyroscope problems, the space agency confirmed Monday. Although science operations are expected to resume fairly soon, the current issues raise concerns about the future of the invaluable scientific instrument.

Ground operators put the telescope into this stable configuration after one of the three active gyros that help point the telescope failed. According to NASA, the gyro that failed last week had been exhibiting end-of-life behavior for about a year, and its failure was not unexpected. What happens next is a little complex and requires some explanation.

The Hubble telescope has three pairs of two gyroscopes, with each pair consisting of a primary and back-up gyroscope. Moreover, in each pair, one of the gyroscopes is of an “old” design, while the other is an “enhanced” or newer design intended to last for a longer period of time.

Earth-based telescope takes super-sharp image of Neptune (PHOTOS) https://briefnews.eu/earth-based-telescope-takes-super-sharp-image-of-neptune-photos/ https://briefnews.eu/earth-based-telescope-takes-super-sharp-image-of-neptune-photos/#respond Thu, 19 Jul 2018 00:47:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/earth-based-telescope-takes-super-sharp-image-of-neptune-photos/

An incredible super-sharp image of planet Neptune has shown just how far earthbound telescope technology has come, producing an image quality that rivals that of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope.

The crisp, clear photo was made possible because of a new system of lasers installed in the European Southern Observatory’s (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT), located in Chile.

The MUSE/GALACSI adaptive optics system allows the telescope to correct the effects of atmospheric turbulence and create sharper spatial images.

The newly released photo of Neptune demonstrates the telescope’s greater capabilities, showing that it is now possible to capture images from the ground at visible wavelengths that are sharper than those taken by Hubble, a telescope that orbits the earth.

There are no spacecraft currently orbiting Neptune, so if astronomers want images of the planet, they need to take them from some 4.6 billion kilometers (2.9 billion miles) away.

The VLT also captured photos of star clusters and other objects using laser tomography. The system has two adaptive optics modes: narrow-field mode, which can capture images of small points of the sky with high precision, and wide-field mode, which can capture images of larger parts of the sky but only correct for a kilometer-thick swath of atmosphere distortion, according to the ESO.

The ESO says the impressive technological advances will allow astronomers to study the properties of astronomical objects in much greater detail than was possible before.

Ultra-sensitive radio telescope debuts in South Africa https://briefnews.eu/ultra-sensitive-radio-telescope-debuts-in-south-africa/ https://briefnews.eu/ultra-sensitive-radio-telescope-debuts-in-south-africa/#respond Sun, 15 Jul 2018 22:10:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ultra-sensitive-radio-telescope-debuts-in-south-africa/

Another piece of the Square Kilometer Array’s puzzle just fell into place. South Africa has officially switched on MeerKAT, billed as the most sensitive radio telescope of its type on the planet. Some parts of the array have been gathering data, but it’s now nearly ready to use interferometry from all 64 dishes to map the normally invisible portions of space in exceptionally high detail. It should be completely ready for scientific experiments in about two months, according to Nature. However, you won’t have to wait that long to see fresh results — you’re looking at some above.

Researchers have produced a panorama of the Milky Way galaxy’s center (which contains a supermassive black hole) using radio, infrared and X-ray wavelengths that penetrate the gas and dust thwarting conventional telescopes. The image isn’t just pretty — it shows many of the sources of magnetized filament structures near the black hole that previously remained a mystery, potentially offering an explanation for how those filaments came to be.

There are already two projects underway to make use of the full telescope. One will study the level of hydrogen in galaxies , which could help fill out the history of the universe, while another will tackle fast radio bursts and other transients that remain elusive to astronomers. Ultimately, MeerKAT will accommodate eight large-survey projects that will give each team over 1,000 hours of observation time over five years.

Work to fold MeerKAT into the Square Kilometer Array won’t start until 2020, when it will gradually integrate with another 130 dishes in South Africa as well as a maximum of 130,000 antennas in Australia. When it’s ready, though, the SKA could provide insight that other telescopes just couldn’t match. It’s also a major milestone for space science in Africa. Although MeerKat is expensive at about 4.4 billion rand ($ 331 billion US), it’s already serving as a draw for scientists who would otherwise have to go to the Americas, Australia or Europe to gather the data they need.

NASA’s planet-hunting Kepler telescope is running out of fuel https://briefnews.eu/nasas-planet-hunting-kepler-telescope-is-running-out-of-fuel/ https://briefnews.eu/nasas-planet-hunting-kepler-telescope-is-running-out-of-fuel/#respond Mon, 19 Mar 2018 06:21:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nasas-planet-hunting-kepler-telescope-is-running-out-of-fuel/

NASA’S Kepler telescope is running out of fuel and will shut down within several months, according to the agency. The groundbreaking space observatory has discovered more than 2,300 planets.

After nine years in flight around Earth’s orbit, the telescope has defied the limits of the original mission plan and survived every mechanical malfunction, beaming back vital information about the makeup of the Milky Way.

“Our current estimates are that Kepler’s tank will run dry within several months – but we’ve been surprised by its performance before,” Charlie Sobeck, system engineer for the Kepler mission, said in a NASA statement. “While we anticipate flight operations ending soon, we are prepared to continue as long as the fuel allows.”

Kepler’s mission was originally scheduled to last for only two years. However, the spacecraft continued to operate seamlessly, only presenting problems in 2013, when three of Kepler’s four “wheels,” the tools that aim the craft, failed. That malfunction left it unable to maintain a steady rotation in space.

After that, scientists gave Kepler a new lease on life by using the pressure of sunlight to maintain its aim, almost “like a kayak steering into the current.” Renamed the K2, the updated spacecraft was given an extended mission that required the telescope to shift its field of view every three months. At the time, scientists estimated that K2’s remaining fuel should last for about 10 three-month periods. The craft has now entered its 17th campaign.

The team plans on spending what’s left of Kepler’s life collecting as much data as possible. Once the fuel-powered thrusters die, the engineers will not be able to aim the spacecraft for a data transfer.

“We even have plans to take some final calibration data with the last bit of fuel, if the opportunity presents itself,” Sobeck said.

Most NASA missions set a deadline to end a spacecraft’s missions so they can reserve enough fuel to shoot it into a career-burning atmosphere and remove it from orbit in order to protect satellites and future spacecraft. However, deep-space missions like Kepler are so far from Earth that scientists are able to utilize the spacecraft until the bitter end.

Fans of Kepler can now look forward to its newer, more advanced replacement. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), which will be launching from Cape Canaveral, Florida on April 16.

TESS will take over where K2 left off, focusing on the brightest stars less than 300 light-years away in search of planets outside our solar system.
