Everyone faces doubt or negativity at some point. It’s important to remember that your attitude is the difference maker in determining whether your dreams become a success or failure.Zig Ziglar once said,

“Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.”

Your mindset impacts everything you do and may even hold limitations on what you can do. When you have a negative attitude, you will subconsciously manifest or spread negativity into your way of thinking, your work and even the people closest to you.On the other hand, having the right attitude for success will make you more receptive to new ideas, think of better ways to overcome challenges and you will start noticing more new opportunities. From personal development tips to productivity, how are you supposed to know which techniques you should apply and which will lead you down the path of success? There are countless tips available but these 16 methods will keep you positive no matter what challenge you face and help you create the right attitude for success.

16 Promising ways to change your attitude

Fighting negativity doesn’t have to be as boring or as complicated as many people think.

1. Take a vacation!

There are hidden advantages to taking a vacation and a huge correlation between holiday and success.

  • Increased productivity: You will be more productive if you take vacations, it’s been proven time and time again. Restoration is rooted in our physiology, humans are not meant to spend energy continuously.
  • Newer perspectives: Stay away from work for a while and do something enjoyable. When you go back to work, you will have a whole new outlook on life.
  • Increased mental strength: Working non-stop and getting things done may make you think you are on top of the world. But your mind feels something else entirely. A study by the University of California’s Gregory Hickock University found that our brains do not have reservoirs to collect energy and power. Vacations can help reset your mind.
  • Improving mental health: The US News and World Report have spoken with experts who have indicated that one of the main benefits of a vacation is that it can improve your mental health.((US News and World Report: The Benefits of Taking Time Off)) Confidence of calm and ease relieve stress, which allows the body and mind to heal in ways that it cannot if it was still under pressure.

Burning yourself out is not an effective use of your time and is quite detrimental to your success. Take some time to clear your mind. If it is not vacation at least plan a break.

2. Study the habits of successful people.

Daily habits are a key to success. People have zero control over the world politics, weather, and similar circumstances. But we control ourselves and our habits, rituals, and routine. And, while we all can learn successful habits, it is meaningless if we do not apply this knowledge.Find everyday habits of very successful people that fall within your wheelhouse and those habits you can adopt more easily to create the life you really want to live. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Just do what the wheel-maker does. Observe and imitate the time management experts around you.

3. Make a daily list.

All successful individuals must train themselves to work out a daily to-do list. Think of how important it is for a pilot to use a checklist before each takeoff. That is how effective and successful people should be as well.Take a few minutes to create a “to do” list to use to get through the day.The best time to make the list is the night before. By doing this, your subconscious begins to work on your list as you sleep. This way, when you wake up each morning, you can have amazing insights and ideas which will assist you in achieving some of the most important goals on your list.At the end of each day, the last thing you do should be to plan out the next day. Making a list helps you organize priorities and keeps you on track throughout the day.

4. Eliminate needless interruptions.

You have to understand that each of us has the same 24 hours a day as Mark Cuban, Bill Gates, Will Smith, Oprah, Richard Branson and Henry Ford. It’s how we manage ourselves within a time frame that makes all the difference.Start eliminating unnecessary distractions during the day. Research has shown that it can take our brains up to 20 minutes to recover from one single interruption. So, let’s say you are faced with only three unnecessary distractions every day, you lose an hour of productivity. This can add up to six 40-hour weeks, that’s 240 hours per year. Or better yet, if you bill by the hour, at even $ 50 per hour, that is $ 12,000 lost revenue.Close the office door. Post a sign that says, “conference” if you need to. Let your secretary, voicemail, or answering machine record your messages, then return calls at once.Designate times to check email.Start taking control of your time, your calendar, and your life right now with this one tip. Learn how to remove distractions from life:10 Critical Tips to Prevent Distraction and Sharpen Your Focus

5. Organize and prioritize.

Organize living and workspaces. Don’t let clutter accumulate. Clean as you go. Unorganized space is not only ineffective and counterproductive, it is psychologically exhausting. Select one area to organize each day for 30 days. Start in the space where you spend most of your work time. If you have an area that bothers you the most, start there instead.Prioritize. Complete one task before starting to do something else or stopping at least a natural stopping point. Try to bring closure to tasks, or “trim” large tasks into smaller components so that you work on it a little bit at a time while ensuring they always progress. Find out more about how to prioritize here:How to Prioritize Right in 10 Minutes and Work 10X FasterDeveloping keen organizational skills eliminates unnecessary ineffectiveness and enables individuals to efficiently achieve their goals. So, attack the beast one of two ways.Either bag up everything out of place in each area. Then empty each bag/box/bin one at a time and put things away. Or, if the idea of an organization overwhelms you, hire a professional to do it for you.

6. Surround yourself with positivity.

It is important to continue feeding your brain with happy, loving memories.Recreate those moments that once smiled at you. Remember the times of happiness such as something that encourages you, a birthday party, an outing with friends, a special holiday or your favorite songs. While you are learning to change your mindset, music can help speed up the process. The effects and benefits of music on the brain are many and are not confined to a single genre, as long as they match your musical preferences. In this way, it is the connection of the brain to familiar and valued music, which is the key.Experts recommend different genres for different purposes. Optimistic music, for example, includes songs with positive words, can provide energy boosts and get your mind primed for learning. While instrumental music and relaxing genres can help you stay calm and focused.Ambient music, according to a study from the University of Chicago increases abstract brain processes, which are responsible for creative thinking.Studies from the Department of Psychology at the University of London have found that listening to happy music can make us see the faces of people in a positive light – even if they wear an empty expression. So, throw on some headphones, get in front of the mirror and have at it.Music has an active influence on your mind. Understanding how music and your brain interact, and how to tune your music consumption to maximum impact, can affect how you feel, think, learn, and you achieve success.

7. Get rid of negative people.

Keep naysayers and negative people out of your life as much as possible. You need all the happiness and love you can surround yourself with if you want to constantly focus and work towards your dreams. Remember you’re creating the opportunity to achieve a dream, not a nightmare.First, remember that “like attracts like” – this is universal law. To have positive experiences, you need to have a positive opinion of yourself, evaluate then appreciate the lessons learned from life experiences and your current situations. When you are in a positive mood, you will attract positivity.Embrace relationships that empower, excite and motivate you to be your best, and do the same for others in return. Stay surrounded with positive people who believe in your dreams and cheer you up. The longer you stay focused and positive, the more positive people you will have in your life.Part of having a positive opinion of yourself is believing in yourself. People can feel whether you believe in yourself or not. When you do not believe in yourself, then you will find that you attract others who are struggling with believing in themselves too.Recognize your strengths, gifts and talents, physical beauty and features. Be nice to yourself daily by positive self-talk. When you believe in yourself, you will respect your truth which will attract optimistic people to you.It is very rewarding to be surrounded by positive people; understand it takes time to practice how to be consciously aware of your thoughts and change them from negative to positive. When negative thoughts come to mind just let them go and exchange them with self-affirmative, positive thoughts that support your goals.

8. Listen to teaching tapes in the car.

Instead of being stressed out by traffic, and frustrated by the radio, you can engage your brain, learn another language, improve your sales, business, and management skills, and master the latest strategies for success by listening to tapes during drive time.Spotify and Amazon have thousands of audios that you can listen to whether you need to buy the actual disk or listen through Bluetooth.

9. Utilize waiting time.

Waiting time can drive us crazy. Instead, think of this time as an opportunity to be used to your advantage. When you look at your daily to-do list, identify places that you are likely to wait and start productively using the time. One of the worst traps in falling victim to waiting is the trap of not thinking. We want time to go as fast as we can, so we allow ourselves to sink into an uncomfortable brain fog, convincing ourselves it’s a much-needed break. Do not let that happen it does not make waiting time any better. Keep yourself busy and stimulated, even if it means looking out a window or finally replying to those emails.Always keep a book that you want to read in your car or desk so you can make use of the time you spend waiting for those meetings. Recognize the waiting time is no different from another available time. We all have to use time productively, so that the time waiting is not wasted.

10. Eat for positivity.

Eating is not just the thing we do when we are hungry. Eating is an experience tied strongly to the emotional circuits in the brain. There is an emotional association of food that is further compounded by memories summoned by the smell, texture and look of a visually pleasing meal. This holds a strong correlation over your attitude and the food you eat:

  • Create good memories with good food. Your busy schedule may not allow you to sit and enjoy each meal every day. But no matter the amount of time you have, maintain your focus on your meal using all senses, it is key to your well-being and the emotional association of food.
  • Focus on ‘how’ and ‘what’ you eat. Eat a variety of wholesome, nutritious foods and resist the temptation to overeat. One type of food you should begin incorporating more of are superfoods. Compared to regular vegetables they are much richer in vitamins and nutrients but don’t hold many calories. Superfoods replenish and enrich the body and mind on a very deep level.

Also, try to add these 5 superfoods to your next grocery list:

  1. Maca – known to greatly reduce stress, balance hormone levels, and provide you with a substantial amount of energy and endurance.
  2. Acai – increases cognitive and brain function, improves cholesterol and fights off harmful toxins.
  3. Organic coconut water – keeps you hydrated and youthful. Also has natural antiviral properties.
  4. Chia seeds – are a great way to detoxify and cleanse by removing all the toxins and impurities from your body.
  5. Goji berries – work to enhance your vision and immune system keeping you alert and focused.

There are many more superfoods to try, many people are using them for their health and mental benefits. They work wonders to enhance your mood and energy levels.Your attitude also plays an important role in the adoption and maintenance of a variety of health habits including your diet. You can’t just go through the motions of eating healthier, you have to embrace it.

11. Make time for exercise.

Improve your health and you improve your life, extend your life, and can accomplish more with less fatigue. Research continues to show that making time for exercise delivers serious health and mental benefits.Whether it’s a quick pick-up game of basketball, a group training class at the gym, or even just a run with a friend, exercise won’t happen in a bubble. At the same time, you don’t need to train like a bodybuilder or athlete. Dedicating just 30 minutes a day, three days out of the week is enough to start gaining the mental benefits of exercise:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Increase happiness
  • Improve self-confidence
  • Boost brainpower, sharpen memory and prevent cognitive decline
  • Tap into creativity

Exercise also doesn’t have to be spent running in place on a treadmill or going to the gym, it can be spent walking by the lake, gardening, riding a bike along the beach, carrying groceries, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, and dancing among many other ways.Decide which activities are fun and will suit you best and plan them throughout your week.

12. Use positive words and affirmations.

Our subconscious plays a central role in the realization of our lives and the expression of our desires. What we believe about ourselves at the subconscious level, can have a significant impact on the outcome of events.People use these positive affirming statements for a variety of purposes. In general, the intent behind affirmation statements is to rewrite and reprogram the subconscious, to encourage us to believe in certain things about ourselves or the world around us.They are also used to help us create the reality we want – often in terms of attracting success, love, wealth, health and happiness.Affirmations can be used as inspiration as well as simple reminders. They can also focus attention on goals throughout the day, which, by itself has the potential to promote positive and lasting positive change.Once you have come up with a set of affirmations, to be effective, make sure you use them daily – at the very least.

13. Avoid people who drain you.

It is good to spend time with people, but there are certain people who actually suck your life straight from you. They exhaust you. Identify these people in your life and limit your exposure to them. Our energy comes in limited quantities and it grows or is reduced based on what you do and who you are surrounded by. Understanding how people influence you means you can do a better job matching your needs at any given moment to what your energy requires. How do you say “no” to energy zappers? Just say NO!Energy Zappers are people who may be stuck in a problem you’ve heard for years and years. Their situation and complaints are the same, over and over, and they bring nothing new to the table. They aren’t bad people but you are tired just at the thought of dealing with them. Whether it’s a co-worker or friend, avoid this person. If avoidance is not possible, make sure you are not in a state of resistance when around them. Remember, what we oppose sticks. If you feel uncomfortable around a particular person or group, do not go into resistance mode as a way to protect yourself. This only keeps the bad energy stuck in your space.Find your happy space and remove yourself from the uncomfortable environment as soon as possible. This way, if someone throws some negative juju to you, it will pass right through.

14. Improve your social skills.

On the other hand, building relationships with others greatly reduces stress and anxiety in your life.Research conducted by the University of California, Santa Barbara economist Catherine Weinberger, shows many successful people excel in both social skills and cognitive abilities.((UCSB: Smart and Socially Adept)) This is something that has not always been true. She collapsed data linking adolescence skills in 1972 and 1992 with older results and found that in 1980, both skills did not mean better success, and yet today the combination does so. “People who are both smart and socially skilled are earning more in today’s workforce than similar workers in 1980,” she says.

15. Schedule more time for yourself and family.

Those who work harder on the job than they do on themselves tend to burn out. Remember what you are working for!Schedule time with your spouse and children. Pencil in some time for yourself while you’re at it.

16. Learn to say NO.

Contrary to popular opinion, positivity is not and cannot be destroyed by the word “no.” You’re not a superhuman. Your energy has limits and so does your ability to produce more of it.Taking on an endless list of tasks is not a step in the right direction. Say no to low priority items. Don’t be afraid to tell someone, “I’ve already committed myself to another project that will take up all my spare time, thank you for thinking about me.”

The 90-day attitude transformation challenge

Negativity will somehow creep its way back into your life, it’s impossible to banish it entirely but what truly matters is how you handle it.Do you let it get you down and keep you down, controlling you? Or do you find a way to overcome it?Life requires a positive attitude mainly due to the constant roller coaster of highs and lows. Few people, if any, can remain at the top of the cycle throughout their lives. At some point, you will undergo a phase of trials and tribulations. This is nothing more than a test.Your thought process must be capable of maintaining a level of positivity and realism. No one can completely control what happens throughout their lives but your attitude and the approach you choose to deal with each challenge of life is entirely controlled by you.No one else said it better than Maya Angelou,

If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.

Take the proper steps

Your attitude is rooted in your beliefs and doesn’t shape overnight. It forms over a lifetime and is shaped by your approach and reaction to every situation. The right approach for transforming your attitude starts with an actionable plan and setting S.M.A.R.T. goals.

4 Quick steps:
  1. Put it to paper. It does not matter how high your goals seem, write them down. Be sure to set goals that balance your life. Set goals for every area of your life – spiritual, marriage, family, financial, career, health, education, and leisure goals. Only set goals that inspire you. You will need the fuel of enthusiasm to drive you to your destination.
  2. Prioritize. What do you want to tackle first? Put your goals in numerical order, from your priority to the last.
  3. Chop it down. Break down each goal into bite-size pieces. What do you need to do to achieve your outcome? Be specific.
  4. Take action. This is the most important component of goal achievement. You have to do something every day that brings you closer to your goal. Remember, desire is no substitute for action. Only actions produce results.

Imagine your attitude is like paying down a 30-year mortgage. The first few years you pay very little toward the principal and it seems like it will take 1,000 years to pay it off. But it gets faster with time and the changes will become more noticeable.Your attitude will be the same way. At first, it will seem like you are barely making any progress. Just persevere, and you will succeed.

Final thoughts

Someone whose heart is not in what they do will never be half as productive as someone who has the right attitude.According to the Stanford Research Institute study, the road to success consists of 88% attitude and only 12% education. This does not mean that education is of little importance, but it shows us how critical it is to create the right attitude for success.Once we have the right approach, it becomes much more convenient for things to fall into place.Much like walking, writing, playing sports and picking up any other skill, the attitude can be learned as well. It is essential to identify a negative attitude immediately as it inhibits growth and success. Just as we are able to learn them, we are also able to unlearn them and develop new and more positive habits. It takes 21 days to develop a habit and 90 days to create a lifestyle. Start today! Each week focus on mastering just one of these methods then incorporate another the following week.90 days is only 12 weeks which means before you have completed this list you will have completely transformed your attitude.

Weight loss: Best fat loss diet techniques revealed including ditching this food https://briefnews.eu/weight-loss-best-fat-loss-diet-techniques-revealed-including-ditching-this-food/ https://briefnews.eu/weight-loss-best-fat-loss-diet-techniques-revealed-including-ditching-this-food/#respond Tue, 10 Apr 2018 11:09:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/weight-loss-best-fat-loss-diet-techniques-revealed-including-ditching-this-food/

Weight loss diet techniques can help you lose those stubborn pounds before summer.

How to lose fat is on of the biggest questions British dieters ask.

Now an expert has revealed their best techniques to lose fat, including getting rid of one type of food.

Karen Beck has told Women’s Health that simply removing your favourite food from the house can help you shed the pounds.

According to her putting healthy food on eye levels shelves and putting the other stuff elsewhere is a simple way to get you to eat healthier.

This could help you lose almost two stone, according to some research by Cornell University.

According to the study, those who kept unhealthy food on their kitchen counter weighed on average 12kg more.

So keeping your biscuits in a jar on the kitchen counter could well be contributing to weight gain.

The best way to make sure you eat well is to simply cut junk food out of your weekly shop. This means if it’s not in the house it won’t be on hand to eat it.

Eating more fibre and fat is another great way to lose the pounds, according to another health expert.

Miguel Toribio-Mateas, expert nutrition practitioner and clinical neuroscientist, said: “In terms of carbohydrates, pulses, legumes and lentils are your best choice, but aim to include starchy carbs like rice, potatoes and rye bread in around six meals per week.”

There are many reasons that fibre is supposed to be great for weight loss.

Fat is also good to help you feel full, and to absorb the nutrients from your food.

Some fibre is especially good for those looking to lose fat.

The harder a fibre is for the body to breakdown, the more effective it is at filling dieters up and reducing the number of calories they eat.

Lentils

Black beans

Broccoli

Whole grain rice

Whole grain cereal

Peas

Brussel sprouts

Drinking coffee has also been found to help with weight loss.

Nutritionist Sarah Flowers advises drinking the beverage first thing to “boost both concentration and energy levels” but also to slim down.

One of the ways it does this is to boost metabolism. Sarah explained: “Your daily cup of coffee can help boost your metabolic rate, by stimulating thermogenesis, helping you in turn to burn more fat.”

Irishmen subjected to CIA-style ‘5 techniques’ by British not tortured – European court https://briefnews.eu/irishmen-subjected-to-cia-style-5-techniques-by-british-not-tortured-european-court/ https://briefnews.eu/irishmen-subjected-to-cia-style-5-techniques-by-british-not-tortured-european-court/#respond Tue, 20 Mar 2018 17:10:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/irishmen-subjected-to-cia-style-5-techniques-by-british-not-tortured-european-court/

A European court has rejected a request to find that a group of 14 men detained during internment in Northern Ireland suffered torture. The prisoners were subjected to white noise, sleep and food deprivation as well as beatings.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) rejected the Irish government petition to revise a 1978 judgement against the UK and find that the prisoners, known as the ‘hooded men’ were subjected to torture.

The men were exposed to methods known as the “five techniques” – hooding, white noise, stress positions, sleep deprivation, and food deprivation. The practice was applied over an unknown period of four to seven days for an unspecified number of hours at a time. Similar interrogation techniques have since been deployed by the CIA and outlined in a 2014 Senate Torture report.

READ MORE: 10 most shocking facts we found in CIA torture report

The men, who were all Catholic, were detained in 1971 at the height of The Troubles after Northern Ireland used the Special Powers Act to introduce internment without trial for those suspected of being involved in violence. They were hooded and flown by helicopter to a secret location, later revealed as a British Army camp outside Derry in Northern Ireland. Before landing they were dangled out of the helicopter and told they were high in the air, although they were close to the ground. None of the individuals were ever convicted of wrongdoing.

In 1978 the ECHR found that the British authorities’ actions amounted to inhuman and degrading treatment, but not torture. Following a TV documentary in 2014, which brought archived files to light, the Irish government requested a revision of the original judgment.

The Irish government submitted that a psychiatrist who gave evidence as an expert for the British government misled the Commission by saying that the effects of the ill-treatment were short-lived when he knew that the use of the five techniques had long-lasting and severe effects. The government cited archived documents that allegedly revealed the British authorities had tried to prevent the court from accessing the full truth about the five techniques.

Overall, the court found that the documents did not demonstrate facts which were unknown at the time. It added that it could also not be said that such knowledge might have had a decisive influence leading to a finding of torture, noting that the original judgment had made no reference to the issue of such long-term effects. The revision request was dismissed by a chamber of seven judges by six votes to one.

Amnesty International, who visited the detainees in 1971 and stated then there was evidence of torture at the camp, described today’s decision as “disappointing.” It noted that the ruling is not a statement that the ‘five techniques’ do not constitute torture as it is legally defined today.

“What has been revealed in the files withheld by the UK government cannot be denied. These men were tortured, and with approval at the highest levels of government. The record of what these men endured in those interrogation rooms 47 years ago, and the devastating impact on them afterwards, still stands,” Amnesty said.

London Air Ambulance: Started in 1989 their pioneering techniques are now copied globally https://briefnews.eu/london-air-ambulance-started-in-1989-their-pioneering-techniques-are-now-copied-globally/ https://briefnews.eu/london-air-ambulance-started-in-1989-their-pioneering-techniques-are-now-copied-globally/#respond Sun, 10 Sep 2017 01:12:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/london-air-ambulance-started-in-1989-their-pioneering-techniques-are-now-copied-globally/

The emergency alert was stark and devoid of detail: “Major incident declared. Please report to helipad.”

Barely 10 days had passed since Jihadi terrorists had killed eight civilians and injured 48 as they ploughed through pedestrians with a van on Bridge before embarking on a stabbing spree.

The 39-year-old senior emergency medicine consultant had spent that night treating patients.

The prospect of a third terrorist attack on the capital in just four months seemed unthinkable. As she roused her husband, an anaesthesiologist and fellow consultant with the charity, her mind focused on more pressing matters: they would need to ask someone to look after their children.

We knew Germany already had one, and I was convinced it would save lives, so I said the Express would pay for it there and then

Lord Stevens of Ludgate – Owned Express Newspapers at the time

Within seconds she would learn two things: it wasn’t a terrorist attack and they would not need to go all the way to the East End’s Royal London Hospital, home of London Air Ambulance’s emergency medicine doctors and paramedics.

This incident was much closer to home; just a mile and a half away in North Kensington, where the 24-storey Grenfell tower was already a raging inferno, its amber flames lighting up the night sky.

“My predominant memory is the noise and the smell of the burning. The building was ablaze against the dark sky,” she says, recalling the harrowing events.

“I’d been to jobs involving large fires in my six years with LAA but this was unprecedented. The scale was immense. I don’t think anyone had seen anything like this before.”

Quickly she met up with the rest of her team, the on-call crew plus nine medics. They divided into two groups, each taking one of the two clearing stations already established to deal with casualties.

Clearing station West was full of residents; families with young children, pensioners and even pregnant women in their night clothes.

“Most of the time we deal with single patients but at Grenfell there was a large number of young and elderly and relatives. When you see family groups together it becomes very harrowing.”

Most of the seriously injured were suffering from smoke inhalation.

“Some were in a very serious condition,” she says.

“They all required oxygen. We were able to get them to hospital quickly.”

The London Air Ambulance’s McDonnell Douglas MD902 explorer helicopter and rapid response cars attend around five critically injured patients a day from the charity’s base at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.

The charity is about much more than taking the seriously injured to hospital. In reality, it “takes the hospital to the patient”, and its specialists have made it a world leader in pioneering pre-hospital care.

Pressure for a more immediate type of medical response began in the 1960s. One report in 1988 said that 20 per cent of all deaths following treatment for trauma in hospital could have been prevented if only better and quicker medical assistance were available at the roadside.

The London Air Ambulance service was born in 1989 after Lord Stevens of Ludgate, who owned Express Newspapers at the time, offered to buy and maintain its first helicopter.

He also secured funding for a boost to Royal London’s trauma team. “I was approached by a Richard Earlam, a consultant surgeon at the Royal London, about London having its first air ambulance,” says Lord Stevens.

“We knew Germany already had one, and I was convinced it would save lives, so I said the Express would pay for it there and then.

“The cost was to be around £4million for the helicopter, its maintenance and more trauma specialists.” However, getting the NHS to help was a different matter.

“I felt the NHS should pay for the helipad,” recalls Lord Stevens. “Ken Clarke was health secretary at the time but he said there was no money, so I went to Margaret Thatcher who agreed to see me two days later.

“She listened to me and I will never forget her reply, ‘Leave this with me’. That’s how things worked in those days. The helipad was built and the rest, as they say, is history.”

Those initial 20 years saw the London Air Ambulance project take pre-hospital medicine forward with the series of pioneering world firsts.

In 1993 its trauma surgeons performed the world’s first roadside open heart surgery and in 2012 they were the first to employ Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta (REBOA), a technique which uses balloons to plug wounds from inside the human body.

“People may remember the series MASH, which showed how the US Army used helicopters to quickly transfer wounded soldiers to hospital. “While our roots are there, we’ve gone way beyond that now,” says medical director Dr Gareth Davies.

“Londoners don’t realise the amount of pioneering medicine that has happened here. They see a big red helicopter landing to deal with a crisis, but don’t realise that it contains technical and innovative medicine.”

Techniques have had to be adapted to deal with particular injuries: “We were the first in the world to deliver very complex surgery at the roadside, which was borne out of the epidemic of knife crime in the capital,” says Dr Davies.

“We send very senior doctors and virtually all the equipment you’d find in an A&E department – the drugs, equipment for putting you to sleep, for operating and even blood – to the roadside, where the patient needs it most.

“We’ll undertake open chest cardiac surgery in a pub, on a pavement or in a house – wherever the patient is found. At a hospital you’d expect a big team of 10 or 12 medics but out there, it is only two people between the patient and death.”

He says it has been an uphill struggle, requiring a major cultural and political shift in recognising serious injury in the same way as malaria and leukaemia.

“Serious injury is the biggest killer of people, from one-year-old babies to the elderly, yet when we began even the concept of emergency medicine was new,” he says.

“It was only two or three years ago that the General Medical Council recognised pre-hospital emergency care as a discipline in its own right.”

The 2005 7/7 terror attacks, which saw the LAA helicopter make more than 30 separate sorties, vindicated all the hard work the team had been doing.

“Roads were gridlocked and our helicopter was able to move specialists and equipment round all day,” he says.

“The mortality rate on that day was one of the lowest for an incident of that magnitude that the world had ever seen, a testament not only to emergency services but also the ability to put very senior clinicians deep into the heart of the incident. Now others are adopting our techniques.”

During a typical month, the trauma crew perform eight blood transfusions, eight open heart surgeries and 46 anaesthetics.

“It’s incredibly intoxicating working here,” he adds. “It’s one of the few jobs where, every day, you reach someone who is having the worst day of their lives; they are in the most vulnerable situation and it is one which you and your colleague can turn around – or not.”

London Air AmbulanceMARK KEHOE

Dr Gareth Davies and Dr Anna Dobbie are part of the team called out on average five times a day

Catherine Mackay knows this all too well. In 1993 she almost lost her life when a gas leak in a neighbouring flat caused an explosion so powerful it threw her from her bed into a nearby football field. She suffered 60 per cent skin loss, badly damaged hands and severe lacerations and was still receiving treatment five years ago.

“It was a Sunday morning and I’d been asleep. The next thing I remember is waking up flying through what used to be the wall of my flat,” says Catherine, 54.

“Three others were taken to hospital quickly but I was under rubble and it took 30 minutes before I could be moved. “London Air Ambulance took me to Queen Mary’s Hospital. Being taken to a hospital with a specialist burns unit, rather than the nearest hospital, saved my life.

“A few days later one of the doctors came to see me. I remembered his face hovering over mine in the helicopter, reassuring me. “That he took the trouble to visit me afterwards is such an act of humanity beyond the call of duty, that it has never left me. “I owe London Air Ambulance more than I can ever say.”

The London Air Ambulance charity needs £7.3million a year to carry out its life-saving work.

ASO, short for app store optimization, and the best thing ever for long-term value, means making sure your mobile app ranks as high as possible in app store search results. That’s a great outcome in any scenario, but in today’s app store environment, it’s literally do-or-dead app. Why?

“Oh, man, because there’s close to a billion apps just in iTunes alone?” says Trey Stout, CTO and Co-founder of ScribbleChat and Handwriting.io, and a self-taught nerd from back in the day when the Apple II was cutting edge.

Supply and demand in the app store

So Trout has seen some things, from the dawn of app proliferation until nowadays, when the prospects for a new app can be grim. Less than fifty percent of smartphone users actually installed apps in the last year, Stout says.

There’s not only a massive oversupply problem, but demand for new and exciting specialized apps is actually shrinking as the big platforms start to load up on features and take back ground they’ve lost. Within Facebook Messenger alone, you can take pictures and pretty them up, schedule events with your friends, buy concert tickets, find movie showtimes, and so on and so on.

“A lot of things that used to be single-purpose apps have just sort of been consumed by these ever-expanding social platforms,” Stout explains, “So the demand has shifted away, I think, from just cruising the store looking for cool stuff, to where it’s basically just noise. And so I think because you’ve got this oversupply and a shrinking advantage, it becomes more important than ever to stand out in the crowd.”

Leave the gimmicks behind

That means you need a solid ASO strategy that doesn’t rely on tricks and schemes like keyword stuffing, but instead is fueled by an solid understanding of the context apps are being sold in, and what customers are actually interested in and need.

Apple especially is coming down hard on the gimmicky ASO techniques. For instance, shrinking the title character limit all the way down to 30 words, as well as explicitly banning terms or descriptions that are not actually the name of the app, along with a friendly warning that they’ll modify (or delete) any excessive keyword spamming at any time. That means no more “XYZ app, [value proposition]” any more.

Experiment and steal

“You have to have the willingness to experiment, and you have to try lots of different things,” Trout says. “I’ve seen great results just by playing with things that may not seem that obvious, or you don’t even really have a concrete reason to act on – I’ve even seen a boost from just changing the order of the app screen shots.”

It’s also valuable to keep an eye on how your category is doing, to understand the dips and the rises for your particular app, he adds, in much the same way as when you’re ready to buy a house, you want to know the activity surrounding other homes that have sold or are on the market.

“So for instance, we watch most other social media apps and most other chat platforms to really see if there’s a winning trend in the way they present themselves or the way they talk about their features,” he explains. “Anecdotal stuff like, Hey Facebook changed this and it seems like their installs went up by five percent; maybe we should do it too?”

The three must-do ASO techniques

1. Be literal

“I’ve actually seen a lot of benefit to being very literal about your value prop in the app store – just going down the feature list seems to work better than trying to sell somebody some kind of marketing spiel, ” says Trout. “If you start with waxing poetic that tends to not work as well, even if it’s a more powerful message.”

In other words, don’t use big fancy words, he says. Don’t try and convince people that their behavior needs to change. Tell them how your app aids something they already want to do.

2. Good screenshots are gold

“Before you even mess with the page content itself, take the time to make good screen shots,” he urges. “You should take advantage of the fact that Apple doesn’t require that they be actual screenshots of your app; you can doctor them up to point out certain things.”

He points to how video game screenshots have never been able to effectively communicate what the game is actually like. And most people aren’t going to take the time to analyze a screenshot for 30 seconds to figure out what’s actually happening there.

“People are visual creatures — they get a visceral reaction from the first thing they see,” he says. “So I would take the time to make sure your screenshots are painting the picture you want the user to see, and not just literal screenshots of your app.”

3. Max out paid impressions

“Keyword advertising is ridiculously cheap and highly effective,” he adds. “I just wish I could get more search impressions. I would flood way more cash into paid search in iTunes if I could get more impressions. But we’re basically maxed out on impressions and it costs 20 bucks a day.”

Testing Low-Grip Driving Techniques, Using Wisdom From a Rally Champion https://briefnews.eu/testing-low-grip-driving-techniques-using-wisdom-from-a-rally-champion/ https://briefnews.eu/testing-low-grip-driving-techniques-using-wisdom-from-a-rally-champion/#respond Wed, 01 Mar 2017 15:51:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/testing-low-grip-driving-techniques-using-wisdom-from-a-rally-champion/ Pedal Dance

–

From the March 2017 issue

–

No one has ever understeered their way to driving glory. In addition to being the enemy of driving pleasure, understeer, if potent enough, has the magical ability to reshape the front end of your car. It’s bad.

–

Pendulum turns and left-foot braking, practices common in the world of low-grip driving, also happen to be understeer’s greatest foes. This test measures the effectiveness of those techniques. The goal, in this case, is to destabilize the chassis and point the drive wheels in the desired direction, allowing earlier throttle application and faster exit speed than is achievable using conventional road-racing techniques. Or so goes the theory.

–

Results

–

Taken from our VBOX data, the different lines in this illustration represent the actual paths created using each technique. Despite the Scandinavian flick, the left-foot-braking run (red) uses less road and is faster. The conventional line (blue) is slower partly because understeer causes it to miss the apex.

–

Tim O’Neil, winner of five U.S. and North American rally championships and founder of the Team O’Neil Rally School, says there are multiple benefits of left-foot braking. High on his list: correcting understeer, inducing oversteer, and aiding timing in changing the direction of a slide. The great philosopher Sammy Hagar might have immortalized the notion of using one foot on the brake and one on the gas, but O’Neil helped perfect it.

–

Pedal Dance

–

Despite these benefits, carmakers and lawmakers alike take a dim view of destabilizing anything, especially a moving car. Accordingly, the practical application of this kind of driving is relegated to low-grip rally stages, rallycrosses, and other places less susceptible to the long arm of liability attorneys. To hammer home that point, we disabled the stability control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes on the otherwise stock Subaru WRX we used for this test.

–

But how well does it actually work? We took the WRX, our VBOX, and our left foot to the gravel, comparing the nuances of a pendulum turn to a conventionally executed one. Here’s what we learned:

–

Vehicle Speed

–

Vehicle Speed

–

Faster entry and exit speeds characterize the pendulum-turn run. Notice, however, that the low-grip technique is slower than the conventional one for a full two seconds in the middle of the corner. The point at which it becomes slower (001) corresponds to when the throttle is fully open and just before the peak yaw rate (see 013) is achieved. In other words, it’s the point where the car is rotating fastest. The driver sacrifices speed early to get the car pointed in the right direction sooner and exit at a higher velocity.

–

Brake-Pedal Position

–

Brake-Pedal Position

–

Despite entering the corner 3.5 mph faster using a pendulum turn and left-foot braking, our driver goes to the brake almost 15 feet later in the corner, as he’s confident the car will turn rather than understeer. Notice the overlap of braking and throttle as the pendulum turn is initiated (002, 005). Using the left-foot technique, peak braking is more aggressive (32 percent of the pedal travel versus 16 percent) (003) once the car is turned back to the left. Braking also ends sooner in the left-foot run (004).

–

Accelerator-Pedal position

–

Accelerator-Pedal Position

–

Our driver presses the accelerator at about 2.1 seconds in both runs (006). His enthusiasm for the throttle comes early (007) in the right-foot-only run, however, and results in a lack of commitment. In that run, after reaching almost half-throttle, he backs off the pedal until later in the corner (008), finally ramping it up to 100 percent (009). Y’know, the usual male premature acceleration.

–

Steering-Wheel Angle

–

Steering-Wheel Angle

–

Notice that the left-foot-braking run begins with initial steering input to the right (010). A small flick redirects the momentum from the initial juke to the right to rotate the car further to the left as it enters the corner. Countersteering starts at 1.8 seconds (011), just as the right-foot-braking run’s initial turn-in is beginning (012).

–

–

Yaw Rate

–

Yaw Rate

–

By measuring how rapidly a car rotates around its vertical axis, yaw rate illustrates how much quicker the left-foot technique pivots the WRX into the turn than a conventional turn would. See how peak yaw rate comes much earlier in the corner using left-foot braking (013). Maybe the former Van Halen frontman was onto something when he said, “When I drive that slow, you know it’s hard to steer.” Maybe he should have used his left foot more often.
