Sunday’s American Gods finale will find Shadow Moon holding an extremely physically taxing vigil for his dead father Mr. Wednesday, who also happens to be the Norse deity Odin. There’s no assurance that Shadow, whose mother was a Black woman with no celestial powers to speak of, will even make it through the nine-day ordeal. And then there’s the orisha, aka the Yoruba spirits who have literally danced through Shadow’s dreams and visions this season. What part might they play in our protagonist’s fate?

To truly understand, says Nick Gillie, one of the series’ writers, you have to step back and take a god’s eye view of the season as a whole.

Gillie joined the series after showrunner Charles “Chic” Eglee attended Goddess Black, Gillie’s one-man stage show. He wound up helping to weave the orisha storyline throughout Season 3. “My stage piece is about the mythology of western culture as it relates to the collective soul force,” Gillies says. And when he came to the writers’ room, he found a bunch of people who were experts on Neil Gaiman’s book and the mythology it contains. “What I brought is a mythology of what the American godhead is. The Declaration of Independence talks about an equality of humanity,” he says. “It doesn’t mention this specifically, obviously. But regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, whatever it is: We have a collective equality, and that’s the ‘we.’”

As an example, Gillies points out that the concept of a unifying “we” allowed slaves to survive under crushing work demands in the American south. “So that was what I brought to the show in terms of the ‘we’ soul force, and that became an ideal that all of the characters are now working towards,” he says. “That became a balance against this individualistic ideal that Odin represents.”

american-gods-season-3-finale-ricky-whittle-interview-orishaIn American Gods, the “we” concept manifests as the orisha known as Chango (played by Wale), Aye (Karen Glave), Oshun (Herizen F. Guardiola) and Yemoja (Bridge Ogundipe). Traditionally sent to guide humanity, the four spiritual chaperones are “trying to bring Shadow into the same fold, the same idea of ‘we are all connected,’” Gillie adds. “And there is a spiritual unity of great power that we have access to.”

As we’ve seen, the orisha have their work cut out for them. Season 3 has witnessed Shadow both trying to distance himself from a manipulative Mr. Wednesday and growing more comfortable with his own status (and, perhaps, power?) as a demigod. During a writers’ room visit before the season began, series star Ricky Whittle recalls, Gillie “sat me down and explained exactly the power and the culture and where we were going to go with this season. The story thread, the history and the information and knowledge that he had has been so helpful and so powerful.”

Whittle adds: “I knew when I was making it, it was so powerful and deep. And it really was a pleasure to put out such a strong message.” He laughs. “You know, American Gods certainly is a show that never shies away from sensitive topics. Never more so than now.”

Along those lines: Between Season 2 and 3, the series made entertainment news after former cast member Orlando Jones announced he had been fired, claiming that Eglee thought the character of Mr. Nancy sent “the wrong message” to “Black America.” The series released a statement saying that Jones’ contract had not been renewed “because Mr. Nancy, among other characters, is not featured in the portion of the book we are focusing on within Season 3” and asserted that American Gods is “one of the most diverse series on television.” In addition, a rep for Eglee called Jones’ comments “inaccurate on so many levels, from the macro to the micro.”

Gillie maintains that the show’s focus on Shadow and Bilquis, via the orisha, this season is not a response to Jones’ criticism. “No, it wasn’t related,” he says. “I know the show seems now, after 2020 has happened and George Floyd was choked to death in broad daylight by the police, it seems that the show was made for 2021. But for me, I was writing this [type of thing] in 2008.”

american-gods-season-3-finale-ricky-whittle-interview-orishaNow, back to the finale. In addition to Shadow’s grueling post-mortem task, we’ll see a newly reenergized Bilquis take definite steps toward a new goal — a path series star Yetide Badaki says her character wouldn’t be on without the help of the orisha.

“As we learn more about ourselves, we learn more about our history, the more we learn about our culture. All of these things help us to step into our power,” she tells TVLine. And while Bilquis is hailed as the show’s resident love goddess, “There are many sides to her. The more she recognizes each side, the more whole she becomes. The more whole she becomes, the more empowered she becomes. And then the more empowered she becomes, the more she is able to help and affect the events around her.”

Gillies is quick to point out that, unlike other otherworldly characters like Mr. Wednesday or the New God Mr. World, the orisha “are not so interested in forcing a human to do or learn a thing. They’re just guiding you in the path of learning. So therefore, part of their philosophy is: You’re never a total victim. There’s always a part that you play, if not in the cause of your trauma, then in continuing it and embracing it.”

So when Shadow climbs up onto that tree in Sunday’s episode to endure whatever the gods can throw at him, he’s actively trying to repair past hurts and become someone he isn’t. Or, as Gillie says, “It’s not just Odin that’s seducing Shadow… Shadow is seducing Shadow, and the orisha are trying to show him that… [They’re] reminding him: What do you really want to be here?”

Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes aren’t really friends or partners — they’re more like co-workers — but the dynamic pairing is about to embark on their most intimate journey yet. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, premiering Friday, March 19 on Disney+, will see the superhero duo look inward while tackling a new threat that sends them across the globe.

In the wake of the events of Avengers: Endgame, in which Steve Rogers handed Sam the Cap’s shield, Sam (played by Anthony Mackie) has to decide whether or not he will take up the mantle of Captain America. It’s a heavy choice to make, one that will have the winged hero questioning what it means to be a Black superhero in a post-Rogers world itching for someone new to step up and fill the void.

For head writer Malcolm Spellman, who also executive-produced all six episodes, the Marvel series is an opportunity for fans to get to know the Air Force veteran on a deeper level.

Anthony Mackie in Falcon and the Winter Solider“There’s a long legacy of Black folk who come from [the same stock as Sam], and that informs his worldview,” Spellman tells TVLine. “When you see these unique scenes that he has confronting these villains, and you see him respond in a way that isn’t typical for a superhero, the audience now will have a deeper understanding as to how because they got to spend time in his personal life. We stole a lot of [Anthony Mackie’s] personal life for Sam.”

The Disney+ series will also explore what life looks like for Bucky (played by Sebastian Stan), who doesn’t really have his longtime friend to lean on and is struggling with the trauma of being a formerly brainwashed assassin forced to kill over the course of decades.

“Bucky showed up with more baggage than any hero in Marvel history, and we took all that baggage and distilled it down to a single storyline and a single character that he’s dealing with,” Spellman explains. “If he fails, he is the monster that he worries he might be. And if he succeeds, he’s reborn as someone that might actually be worthy of the shield and the praise that Steve used to get, and becoming a hero in his own right. Because in Bucky’s mind, he’s never been a hero.”

Stan adds that “Bucky is going to have to come out of his shell and learn to accept the past and move forward and get to know the world as it is. Who else could better introduce him to that than Sam Wilson?”

Bucky and Sam are polar opposites who don’t exactly get along — Bucky is a somewhat glum centenarian, while Sam is very much a man of this time — but they still share a few common threads, such as their friendship with Steve Rogers. According to Mackie, they’re also intelligent men with the sense to keep up with the changing times.

“Both characters, coming from where they came from and being the men that they are, realize that the world has changed and evolved,” Mackie says. “The Blip has put us in a position where we no longer are accessible to the way of thinking that was before. That’s what gave us Thanos. So both characters are smart enough to know that the future is different, and they’ve always been progressive enough to see that and move along with [it].”

Stan is looking forward to fans getting to know the Falcon and the Winter Soldier far better than they ever could in the Captain America and Avengers films, and to “spend a day in the life of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes as we haven’t seen… That actually ends up being much more relatable than all those epic times you’ve met them in the movies.”

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: New Photos Tease Sam and Bucky’s Mismatched Team-Up in Disney+ Series https://briefnews.eu/the-falcon-and-the-winter-soldier-new-photos-tease-sam-and-buckys-mismatched-team-up-in-disney-series/ https://briefnews.eu/the-falcon-and-the-winter-soldier-new-photos-tease-sam-and-buckys-mismatched-team-up-in-disney-series/#respond Tue, 23 Feb 2021 00:40:53 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-falcon-and-the-winter-soldier-new-photos-tease-sam-and-buckys-mismatched-team-up-in-disney-series/

Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) step out on their own in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which is set to premiere Friday, March 19 on Disney+. New photos tease an action-packed adventure for the mismatched Marvel duo.

The upcoming series, which takes place after the events of Avengers: Endgame, finds Sam and Bucky navigating a world post-Steve Rogers’ Captain America. The six-episode series is described as a “cinematic experience” that will see the pair team up for “a global adventure that tests their abilities — and their patience.” Expect plenty of action — and even some comedic moments — from this truly entertaining pair.

Head writer and executive producer Malcolm Spellman previously opened up to TVLine about how race will be a core part of the show’s storyline through Sam, who is Black and weighing the heavy decision to take up the Captain America mantle. (Rogers handed him the Cap’s shield in Endgame.) Spellman hopes the show will positively impact Black youth much like 2018’s Black Panther.

“I believe that Falcon and the Winter Soldier is a nice progression with the mantle that [Black Panther director Ryan] Coogler and Chadwick [Boseman] left us,” Spellman said. “I really do believe that these giant Black icons are necessary, not only for Black kids, but for white kids to start to absorb — our people as being big and heroic.”

Alongside Mackie and Stan, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will also feature Emily VanCamp reprising her role as Sharon Carter and Daniel Bruhl returning as Baron Zemo. In addition, The Enemy Within‘s Noah Mills and Supergirl‘s Carl Lumbly are set to appear in unspecified roles, and Lodge 49‘s Wyatt Russell is set to portray John Walker (who adopts the superhero alter egos U.S. Agent and Super-Patriot in the comics).

There’s been no shortage of hard-hitting storylines so far in NCIS: LA season 12, from Marty Deeks (played by Eric Christian Olsen) losing his job to the kidnap of Sam Hanna’s (LL Cool J) daughter. However, in a series of adorable clips to one another on Instagram, Kensi Blye star Daniela Ruah and Nell Jones actor Renee Felice Smith have teased their characters will be working closely together in the next few installments.

In a short series of clips complimenting her NCIS: LA co-star, Smith joked to her 161k Instagram followers: “Daniela and I are starting a fan club for each other okay?

“It’s called the Dani and Renee fan club or the Renee and Dani fan club and we’re just gonna be being fans of each other and I think it’s really cool.

“After we do scenes together – and we have a few really nice scenes coming up and we don’t often get to do that.”

The Nell Jones star didn’t stop there as she heaped praise onto her colleague.

“So it’s been a really special treat especially for me because I get to watch her work and she is like an actual genius person who can do anything I’m pretty sure,

Smith concluded: “So this is the beginning of the Dani/Renee, Renee/Dani fan club where we fan girl about each other.”

Reciprocating the kind words of her NCIS: LA co-star, Ruah shared a few clips of her own.

And she too detailed how Nell and Kensi’s future on the show will see them spending much more time together.

So what is it the two could find themselves working so closely together on?

Well, there are plenty of cases about to land on the OSP’s dead.

And arguably most pressing is the kidnapping of Sam’s daughter Kam (Kayla Smith).

The promo for the next episode hints Callen and Sam will pull out all the stops to track her down, from high-speed car chases to bone-crushing fights.

And beyond that, Callen will land in a rather tricky situation when he heads to Russia.

The synopsis for episode 11, which is Ruah’s directorial debut on the show, confirms Callen will run into the arm of the law during his venture abroad.

But will he be freed with Nell and Kensi’s help? Or do the two have something else up their sleeves?

NCIS: LA returns to CBS on February 14.

Connecting EPs Tease the ‘Catharsis’ of NBC’s Upcoming Quarantine Comedy https://briefnews.eu/connecting-eps-tease-the-catharsis-of-nbcs-upcoming-quarantine-comedy/ https://briefnews.eu/connecting-eps-tease-the-catharsis-of-nbcs-upcoming-quarantine-comedy/#respond Tue, 06 Oct 2020 22:16:06 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/connecting-eps-tease-the-catharsis-of-nbcs-upcoming-quarantine-comedy/

Finding the comedy in any collective tragedy is a daunting task for entertainers. But bringing levity to an ongoing global pandemic that has claimed more than 200,000 U.S. lives and kept Americans in quarantine for six months and counting?

Well, that was a Barnum and Bailey-level tightrope walk for the producers of NBC’s Connecting — but it was also a challenge they were eager to face.

“The way many of us deal with uncomfortable and painful situations is with humor,” executive producer Martin Gero (who’s coming off the recently concluded Blindspot) tells TVLine. “That duality of comedy and pain is inside us in a pretty ingrained way already. It was just about finding that balance and making sure the show never got too dark, but also never got too light.”

Connecting — premiering Thursday, Oct. 8 at 8/7c — follows a group of friends who, like many in 2020, have been forced to spend time together remotely as the coronavirus sends America into lockdown. The season opens on March 29, just a few days into those strict stay-at-home orders, and will eventually reach November’s election, with each episode jumping forward in time by a few weeks.

But even though the pandemic is still wreaking havoc around the world, Gero and executive producer Brendan Gall say they didn’t second-guess making a TV show that so closely reflects real life. (Other events that have unfolded during quarantine, including a wave of Black Lives Matter activism, are covered on the show, too.)

“We were definitely conscious that there was a version of this that would feel tone-deaf and wrong, and it was our goal to not do that version,” Gero explains. “But we also need stuff that speaks to the moment we’re in, and people want to feel seen and have those stories resonate. What we’re going through is a lot, and we could use some place to have catharsis. That’s what comedy does so well.”

Adds Gall, “We have these genres of storytelling — drama and comedy and crime and blah blah blah — and that’s not how any of us walk through the world. We don’t get to exist in just one single genre in our lives. That’s what we were embracing.”

Striking the proper tone on Connecting has been just one of many obstacles for the EPs, who are also navigating the unprecedented process of filming a TV show with little human contact. Each actor received a filmmaking kit, which included an iPhone 11 (on which most Connecting scenes are shot), sound equipment and lighting equipment; the crew remotely guides the actors through their own hair and makeup, production design and just about everything else needed to get the shot.

“It’s the closest thing to theater that I’ve done in television” Gero reveals. “It feels like such a communal experience of ‘We’re all in this together,’ and it’s been incredibly powerful to work on at a time when people are feeling so isolated.”

Outside of their partnership on Connecting, Gero and Gall have been friends for 20 years, and their standing Sunday-night Zoom dinners with other close pals during quarantine were the inspiration for the show. That sense of community — and commiseration, perhaps — are what the producers hope to convey, per Gall, in spite of the year’s harrowing events.

“It’s a common knee-jerk response when people say, ‘I don’t know if I want to watch a show about what we’re going through right now,’” Gall admits. “But the second response, that seems to come almost universally, is that once you start to talk about the show and see the show, people really get pulled into it… This show lets you in on this ongoing, evolving conversation about what we’re all going through, which we all need right now.”

Warning: The following contains spoilers for Emily in Paris‘ finale. Proceed at your own risk!

Oh la la, Emily in Paris‘ season concluded with quite a torturous cliffhanger for fans of the “will they or won’t they?” relationship between the titular heroine and her handsome neighbor Gabriel.

Let’s briefly recap: Realizing that his best chance at opening his own restaurant was in Normandy, Gabriel announced that he was moving — and soon! Since his girlfriend Cami wasn’t about to leave her life in Paris, that meant the couple was officially broken up. Emily, too, was shocked by Gabriel’s big move, but at the same time, she was happy for her friend and his new venture. The pair said their awkward goodbyes, but that wasn’t how Emily wanted to leave things with Gabriel, so she rushed back to the restaurant where he works and the two passionately kissed, before taking things to the bedroom. As they lay in his bed, Gabriel noted that Normandy is not that far away.

“It’s not that I can never see you again. It’s just that I don’t think I should ever see you again,” Emily replied. After all, Cami is also her friend. “We’d both be hurting someone that we care about a lot.”

Emily in Paris FinaleThe next day, Emily found Gabriel back at the restaurant instead of on his way to Normandy. Surprise! He’s buying the Parisian restaurant, with the help of Antoine’s financing. The happy moment was then broken up by a potentially troublesome text from Cami to Emily: “I just heard from Gabriel. He’s staying in Paris. Can we talk??”

So what does the message mean?! “Nothing is sort of exactly as it seems to [Emily],” creator Darren Star cryptically hints, “and I think a lot of her ideas about life are constantly tested. And they will be next season, as well.” (The show’s Season 2 fate is To Be Determined, for the record.)

As for Gabriel’s decision to stay, his feelings for Emily are at the forefront of his mind and his choice. “I think Emily gave him purpose again, and he had enough strength around her that he felt like he could go further with his restaurant project and actually make it happen, [whereas] he didn’t have that strength before with Camille,” Lucas Bravo, who plays the chef, tells TVLine. “Based on that, he sees Emily as his pillar, his main inspiration, his strength.”

So when Antoine offers to help Gabriel, “he’s just like, ‘OK, planets are aligned,’” Bravo continues. “And she’s also the reason why he knows [Antoine]. She’s the reason why he’s going to have another opportunity, and she’s connected to everything that is happening. So she’s, obviously, the main reason he’s so happy about staying.”

Meanwhile, Emily is both “deeply conflicted” and “really excited” following Gabriel’s big news, star Lily Collins describes. “She’s now more confused than ever, because Cami and her have created this real bond, and she is all about her girlfriends. But at the same time, he’s been the [constant] throughout her experience so far, being supportive and being a friend, but also something a little bit more.”

So what does the future hold for the would-be couple, should the series get renewed? “What happens in the next chapter, I think, can be a real exploration of how does the relationship between these three characters evolve,” Star previews. “That, to me, is such a fun thing to explore in Season 2, because these are not Americans. They’re French people. To me, a big part of the show is looking at everything through a different lens. Season 2 will open up some interesting and surprising relationship avenues.”

Emily in Paris NetflixPlus, there’s the issue of if Emily and Gabriel pursue a relationship, are they doing something wrong, especially in light of the fact that their attraction began — and a kiss transpired — while Gabriel was still dating Cami? “I think it’s really sticky,” Collins admits. “I’d probably steer clear of that, because there’s obviously been so much going on with Gabriel and Cami’s relationship. When you go to the Loire Valley and see the family and how they all interact, there’s such a deep history there. I would just let things settle.”

For his part, Bravo believes Emily and Gabriel are “definitely not in the good, this is wrong, but this is also exciting,” he says. “I think they’re both kind of lost. She’s lost in Paris, and he’s lost in his feelings. So that’s what happens, I guess, when two lost people find each other.”

And Gabriel isn’t the only man pursuing Emily in the French capital: Thinking that Gabriel had already left for Normandy, Emily agreed to go to Saint-Tropez with fashion exec Mathieu. But never fear, because as Collins puts it, “I don’t see them being a great match. I see that as more of a distraction.”

What We Do in the Shadows Season 3: EPs Tease a Quest for Love, an Origin Story, a [Spoiler] for the Roommates https://briefnews.eu/what-we-do-in-the-shadows-season-3-eps-tease-a-quest-for-love-an-origin-story-a-spoiler-for-the-roommates/ https://briefnews.eu/what-we-do-in-the-shadows-season-3-eps-tease-a-quest-for-love-an-origin-story-a-spoiler-for-the-roommates/#respond Sun, 26 Jul 2020 11:05:03 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/what-we-do-in-the-shadows-season-3-eps-tease-a-quest-for-love-an-origin-story-a-spoiler-for-the-roommates/

Nearly 30 minutes after teasing the Comic-Con @ Home crowd, “We know what’s going to happen, but we’re not gonna tell you,” What We do in the Shadows‘ Paul Simms and fellow executive producer Stefani Robinson eventually parted with some teasers for Season 3, which was ordered by FX in May.

Appearing in a virtual panel hosted by Season 2 guest star Haley Joel Osment and featuring cast members Kayvan Novak, Harvey Guillen, Natasia Demetriou, Matt Berry and Mark Proksch, Simms on or around the 28:00 mark (video below) shared, “If there’s any preview we can give about Season 3, it’s that [the roommates] all have something that they’re searching for.”

Novak’s Nandor, for example, “might be searching for love,” Simms said, while Proksch’s Colin Robinson “still doesn’t know how he became an energy vampire — he’s just rolled with it all these years — so there might be a search that he goes on.”

Simms then started to tease “new duties” for one of the characters, but caught himself and declared that morsel too spoilery at this early date. (The show typically films in the winter, in Toronto.)

Before signing off, Osment asked the EPs if there might be further broadening of the show’s magical world and the creatures that live in it, seeing as Season 2 introduced witches and trolls, for example.

EP Robinson hinted, “There are some creatures that live on edifices…” — presumably referring to gargoyles. Then, after Novak thrust his pet in front of his web cam (saying in Nandor’s accent, “I’ve turned myself into a cat!”), Demetriou jokingly inquired if any storyline might give the cast opportunity to play with puppies or kittens.

That nudged Simms to share, “The vampires do get a hellhound to protect them. That’s all that I’m saying!”

RELATED STORIES

Last Man Standing won’t shy away from hot-button issues in 2020.

As it enters its eighth season (its second on Fox), the Tim Allen comedy will delve into politics and religion in ways that it has not done before — and in ways that have the potential to permanently alter dynamics within the Baxter family.

Ahead of the double-episode premiere (Thursday at 8/7c), TVLine spoke with executive producer Kevin Abbott and series star Molly McCook (aka Mandy No. 2) about what’s coming up in the new year.

MIKE & VANESSA | Mr. and Mrs. Baxter will enter a new phase of their lives as empty-nesters. “It kind of changes everything,” Abbott tells TVLine. “We play on the fact that there are no longer any children in the house throughout the first 10 or 11 episodes.” The premiere is “ultimately about a lack of communication brought on by physical distance,” and Mike’s efforts to remedy that distance to appease Vanessa.

'Last Man Standing' Season 8 - Mike and ChuckEpisode 2 will beget a larger discussion about how Mike and Vanessa plan to spend their free time: “If part of your purpose every day is taking care of these people in the house, and that responsibility goes away, how do you react to that? Is it freeing, or is it somehow a loss?” Rather than sit around and twiddle his thumbs, Mike decides to go into business with Chuck — but their plan to open a classic car renovation service crashes when Joe (recurring guest star Jay Leno) is invited to join in. “There’s a fun little story that spins out from that,” Abbott says.

While Mike fixes cars, Vanessa will take stock of her own booming business. “She discovers that her tutoring business is thriving because the educational system is failing… and she decides to run for [State Assembly],” Abbott reveals. “We always talk a little bit about politics on the show, so it’s a way for us to introduce some subject matter without being too partisan and too issue-oriented.”

KRISTIN & RYAN | In the premiere, Mike invites Kristin, Mandy and Eve over for dinner, where Kristin reveals that — Spoiler alert! — she’s pregnant. The storyline was dictated by portrayer Amanda Fuller’s real-life pregnancy, and Abbott’s desire not to try and write around it. “I’ve been on enough shows where you try to hide it, and it really doesn’t work too well,” he says. (Fuller gave birth to her first child in November.)

'Last Man Standing' Season 8 - Kristin and RyanAnother episode will find “Kristin and the entire family delighting in the fact that this time around, they actually get to walk into church and say, ‘Hey, we’re pregnant!’ because she’s married and she’s got a career, as opposed to the first time [when she was a teenager and had Boyd out of wedlock],” Abbott says. And unlike her first pregnancy, Ryan is actively involved, which the EP says “absolutely comes into play” — the idea of “what it’s like this time versus what it was like last time” Kristin was having a baby, “and just how different it is — both in good and bad ways.”

MANDY & KYLE | While Mike and Vanessa are ecstatic for Kristin and Ryan, Mandy has mixed feelings about her sister’s pregnancy. “She’s dealing with a little bit of jealousy and a little bit of FOMO,” McCook tells TVLine. “Last season, we found out that Mandy and Kyle were having some ‘technical issues’ with trying to get pregnant… She’s happy for Kristin, but she’s hoping for kids herself, and it seems like her sister is having no trouble popping out babies.”

'Last Man Standing' Season 8 - Kyle and MandyWhile Mandy and Kyle’s family planning will factor into Season 8, their careers also will play a big role this year. “Mandy is now fully working at Outdoor Man with everyone,” McCook says. “It’s fun to see her in that environment because she doesn’t quite fit in, but she’s putting her ‘Mandy sparkle’ on everything that she’s doing,” including her new athleisure line.

As for Kyle, he’ll be considering a major life change, which was first hinted at in Season 7. “We have him contemplating going into ministry,” Abbott reveals. “He’s a religious character, which you don’t really see a lot of on TV. We’ve always referred to him as a ‘pure character’ and a ‘pure spirit,’ and we kind of like that notion of him seeing if there’s a calling to do more with his life.” Should he go that route, the series will explore the impact that has on Mandy, and whether she’s fully on board with her husband’s divine decision. “She always worries when Kyle tells her about some change or some new idea that she’s not one-hundred percent [on board] with,” McCook adds, “but she always trusts him and only wants him to be happy.”

Last Man Standing Season 8 will kick off with three weeks of back-to-back originals, beginning Thursday, Jan. 2 at 8/7c, on Fox. Watch an exclusive sneak peek below, then hit the comments with your reactions.

Chicago P.D. Stars Tease Crossover’s ‘Burzek’ Curveball, ‘Upstead’ Feelings https://briefnews.eu/chicago-p-d-stars-tease-crossovers-burzek-curveball-upstead-feelings/ https://briefnews.eu/chicago-p-d-stars-tease-crossovers-burzek-curveball-upstead-feelings/#respond Tue, 15 Oct 2019 00:20:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chicago-p-d-stars-tease-crossovers-burzek-curveball-upstead-feelings/

RELATED STORIES

This Wednesday’s #OneChicago crossover is not to be missed, and not just because a deadly bacteria is unleashed on the Windy City. For fans of Chicago P.D. exes Burgess and Ruzek, the three-hour event also features a development that took one of the show’s own stars by surprise.

“They threw a curveball at me that I did not see coming,” Marina Squerciati, who plays Burgess, tells TVLine. “I think the ‘Burzek’ story is going to be very interesting. We touch on it [during the crossover] in Episode 4, and then we’ll come back to it later.”

“There are some seeds planted,” says co-star Patrick John Flueger, aka Ruzek. Knowing what’s in store for the former couple, Squerciati thinks “‘Burzek’ fans may be excited.”

After their brief no-strings-attached hookup and several failed attempts to move on, “I think that it’s time that something happens [with ‘Burzek’]. Like, it goes or it doesn’t,” Squerciati adds.

Speaking of past failed romances, Ruzek is coming off an ill-fated one with Hailey Upton, which was “a completely different animal than his relationship with Burgess,” Flueger notes. “They were just better as friends. They were always going to be better as friends, and I think that they’ve just really realized that. I don’t think there’s going to be a lot of, like, leftover feelings, whereas Burgess, I think he’s just always going to be a little bit in love with her, regardless.”

Chicago PD Halstead UptonThere are, however, all sorts of feelings between Upton and Jay Halstead, especially after the former finds herself in quarantine after being exposed to the crossover’s deadly pathogen. “Jay is the one that sent her on this mission that ends up making her get exposed. So Jay feels responsible,” his portrayer Jesse Lee Soffer previews.

“I think Jay cares, and he feels really bad,” Soffer continues, “and you get some nice scenes where he goes to see her and is sorry for the fact that she’s having to go through this.”

The #OneChicago “Infection” crossover airs this Wednesday on NBC, kicking off with Fire at 8/7c, followed by Med at 9 pm and P.D. at 10 pm.

Good Doctor’s Nicholas Gonzalez, EP Tease New Obstacles For ‘Limendez’: ‘Forbidden Love Is the Tastiest Kind’ https://briefnews.eu/good-doctors-nicholas-gonzalez-ep-tease-new-obstacles-for-limendez-forbidden-love-is-the-tastiest-kind/ https://briefnews.eu/good-doctors-nicholas-gonzalez-ep-tease-new-obstacles-for-limendez-forbidden-love-is-the-tastiest-kind/#respond Sun, 22 Sep 2019 22:05:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/good-doctors-nicholas-gonzalez-ep-tease-new-obstacles-for-limendez-forbidden-love-is-the-tastiest-kind/

In The Good Doctor‘s Season 3 premiere (ABC, Monday at 10/9c), Shaun turns to his friends and colleagues to analyze why his first date with Carly went so badly — but Dr. Melendez is a bit distracted.

“I don’t think I offer up anything on this one because I’m kind of [worried about] my own relationship with Lim,” portrayer Nicholas Gonzalez previews to TVLine. “We’re dealing with this promotion of hers that makes this a forbidden love, which is the tastiest kind.”

In the episode, the couple’s previous decision to go public with their relationship complicates matters at work in the wake of Lim’s chief of surgery appointment.

“Going into it, I don’t think they know just how much of a challenge it will be,” notes executive producer David Shore. “Whenever you throw something like this at a relationship, where one has responsibility and authority over the other, it changes things. So whenever there’s a choice made, and they disagree, what does that mean?”

An initial source of tension may stem from Lim’s first big decision as chief. In the premiere, she announces that third-year residents — including Shaun, Claire, Morgan and Park — will be allowed to lead surgeries.

“Last season, Melendez was genuinely happy for Lim and realized that she would be great at this job,” Gonzalez says. But now she is “going to be the person that is making these decisions,” and “she’s not asking his opinion.” — With reporting by Kim Roots
