Eamonn Holmes, 61, and his wife Ruth Langsford, 61, were on hand to host Wednesday’s edition of the programme and the former teased he had an announcement to make at the start of the show. Midway through This Morning, the presenter told viewers of the ITV show he was going to become a grandad as his eldest son Declan is expecting a child with his wife, Jennie. The presenter and his wife were visibly emotional over the news as they fought back the tears.

At the beginning of the announcement, Eamonn said: “I’ve been having a very tough week. Tell everyone how tough my week has been.”

Ruth replied: “It’s been very, very tough. No, it has and you’ve told people a lot but I do know he is in a lot of pain.”

Taking over, the former Sky News broadcaster added: “I don’t like complaining about anything,” before explaining he’d had a lot of support from viewers over his recent back problems.

“It hasn’t been a good time and I’ve been in tears and I’ve been in tears again because it involves these two people here.”

An image of Declan and Jennie was shown on screen as Eamonn’s children don’t tend to make appearances on his shows.

“The clue is their surname is Holmes. Declan is my eldest boy, he’s 32 years of age and there is Jennie his beloved wife,” the presenter explained.

“And they have just announced that I’m going to be a grandparent which means I am a [grandad],” he continued as Ruth applauded him.

Declan is Eamonn’s eldest child from his first marriage to Gabrielle Holmes, which ended in 1995 following the birth of two other children; Rebecca and Niall.

Along with his wife Ruth, the broadcaster also has another son called Jack but Declan is the first to give the television veteran a grandchild.

Taking to Twitter, viewers reacted to the news as one wrote: “@EamonnHolmes so glad you’re going to be a granddad. You had me worried for the last hour. Also Granny @RuthieeL. Congratulations to the parents of the new arrival due in July.

Another posted: “Thought Eamonn Holmes was gonna retire or something…he’s gonna be a grandad? Great news but very badly worded… #ThisMorning.”

A third remarked: “@EamonnHolmes @thismorning Geez Eamonn, you news sounded like there was something seriously wrong with you. Can you be less dramatic and sound more cheerful.”

“Not very impressed with Eamonn Holmes leading everyone on to think he’s poorly or something only to then announce he’s going to be a Grandad? Badly worded lead up #ThisMorning,” a fourth shared.

It was only last year, Eamonn and Ruth spoke out about the idea of becoming grandparents in the not-so-distant future.

Discussing the prospect on the show last year in light of school closures because of the pandemic, the former said: “The next time we are in a school will be when we are grandparents.”

Ruth added: “We will be grandparents! I will look forward to it. You don’t have all the responsibility, do you?

“You just have all the nice stuff, like prize-giving, the nativity play, you don’t have to do early morning school runs.”

“We look forward to those days again,” Eamonn said but back in 2018, he added more speculation to the rumour mill he was going to be a grandad.

The presenter said: “If it’s God’s will and there are grandchildren then I would be the most fun granddaddy on the block!”

“He doesn’t like the thought of being a grandpa because it makes him feel old,” Ruth explained in an interview with HELLO!

“But I can guarantee you the minute a baby is put in his arms and is his son’s child, he will be mush. I can’t wait! I think it will be lovely,” she added.

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.

The newsreader is leaving BBC News after a career spanning almost 18 years. Simon McCoy has since announced plans to join up with veteran BBC interviewer Andrew Neil at GB News. Marking his final appearance on BBC News on Thursday, the presenter was clearly moved by the occasion. He admitted to “getting chocked up” after watching a highlight reel paying tribute to some of his most memorable interviews and clips.

Speaking following the tribute, Simon said: “Just watching that, yes, we cover the serious stuff but perhaps the most remarkable thing I have ever done is the annual D-Day commemorations at Arromanches and talking to veterans.

“Do you know we have a fantastic job, we meet some amazing people.”

Fighting back tears, he added: “Sorry, I’m getting choked up.

“Just watching that interview, you meet fabulous people.”

 

The popular newsreader built up a strong fanbase of BBC viewers as a result of his dry-humour, hilarious on-screen gaffs and famous sarcastic responses to royal baby news. 

The news Simon was leaving BBC news broke on Twitter earlier this morning when he began retweeting messages from colleagues who had been paying tribute to the much-loved presenter. 

He first reposted a tweet from his Floor Manager, Niall Jackson, who posted a series of photographs of them together with the caption: “If you think he’s a handful on-screen, imagine what he’s like off it? Only got to floor manage 4 years of his 17+ at @BBCNews so was nice to do his final week.

“Made the dreariest of heavy news days instantly more manageable. May the road rise up to meet you @BBCSimonMcCoy Sláinte.”

Meanwhile, GB News founder Andrew Neil announced the BBC host has joined his new venture.

Mr Neil wrote on Twitter: “Oh yes. Simon McCoy is joining GB News… another great hire!”

Director of News and Programmes, John McAndrew, said: “Simon’s journalistic integrity, warmth and personality is a perfect fit for what we’re doing at GB News.

“He’s a brilliant journalist with an exceptional ability to relate to people in an upbeat way so we’re keen to get him out from behind a desk and talking to people from all parts of the United Kingdom.”

Each of this evening’s Dancing on Ice semi-finalists took to the rink to perform a personal routine close to their hearts. Deciding to dedicate her second performance to sister Carmen following her death aged 39 after a battle with breast cancer, the grime artist bravely put on a show-stopping routine, racking up high scores from the judging panel.

However, Lady Leshurr’s second routine certainly hit home with head judge Christopher Dean who struggled to keep his composure as he praised the ITV contestant.

The routine earned Lady Leshurr and partner Brendyn a score of 37 to be combined with the perfect 40 she’d racked up from the first skate.

“It’s another huge score,” Phillip Schofield weighed in. “That took everything, didn’t it?”

“I mean, I’m just – I’m speechless,” an emotional Lady Leshurr replied before adding: “I hope I did my sister proud,

“The brother-in-law, the kids, my mum. I just had an amazing time.

“Just to spread more awareness about cancer in general, like I really think it’s good to always be able to speak about things that may be awkward.”

A round of applause erupted in the studio before Phillip and Holly Willoughby turned to the judges for their thoughts.

Head judge Christopher weighed in: “The simplicity of the skate that made it so powerful,

“And, um, just listening to everything that’s gone on -“

Christopher stopped himself midway through his feedback to Lady Leshurr as he became choked up.

Fighting through tears, he commended the Dancing on Ice star for the touching tribute and added: “I feel for you.”

John Barrowman was similarly emotional and told Lady Leshurr her sister would be “so proud” of what she’d achieved.

ITV viewers at home were similarly in tears by the performance, with one saying on Twitter: “How did Lady Leshurr even manage to get through that skate, let alone do it so well? Incredible. #dancingonice.”

A second agreed: “Lady Leshurr’s tribute was emotional. I’m sure her family is proud #DancingOnice.”

“Beautiful 2nd skate from Lady Leshurr and a wonderful tribute to your sister,” a third fan echoed.

While a fourth concurred: “I give Lady Leshurr and Brendyn 10.0 out of 10.0! This brought so much emotion out of me, and that was all I was looking for. Carmen would be proud, @LadyLeshurr. #DancingonIce.”

And a fifth added: “So much love to Lady Leshurr and her sister and all of her family. 

“That is so tough to keep a big illness to yourself. Not only that Lady Leshurr losing her sister and the kids losing both parents. That is so tough to deal with.”

Sadly for Lady Leshurr, her efforts weren’t enough to land her a spot in the Dancing on Ice finale.

She lost out to Colin Jackson in the skate-off, meaning he, Sonny Jay and Faye Brookes will battle it out for the top spot next week.

Dancing on Ice returns to ITV on Sunday.

The This Morning team celebrated Holly Willoughby’s milestone birthday with Phillip Schofield lining up a whole host of surprises for the 40-year-old. One of his presents was a poem in which he declared his love for Holly, insisting she was the “sister I never had”.

Phillip had teamed up with poet Tom Roberts for the sweet surprise, with the two having recorded a poem for Holly without her knowing.

Tom kicked off the sweet poem: “There are certain people that make us feel good.”

“Those who know the right words to say,” Phillip then weighed in.

As the two went back and forth, Holly’s face could be seen in the bottom corner of the screen as she began to get emotional.

Tom continued: “Well, how fitting is it that we read this for Holly.”

“To celebrate on her birthday,” said Phillip, as Tom carried on: “With grace and with flare, with charm and with care.”

Phillip added: “She is there when the new day is dawning.”

Holly began to wipe tears away as Tom read aloud: “She brings warmth to our heart with every story she starts…”

“From the familiar couch of This Morning,” Phillip spoke.

The two then went on to praise Holly for her character off-camera, labelling her someone who puts “family first”.

And Phillip signed off the poem by saying Holly was like “the sister I never had” before the two said in unison: “Happy birthday, Holly.”

“Oh, my goodness me,” an overwhelmed Holly said to Phillip. “Thank you so much. That’s so nice.”

Phillip’s surprise passage to his co-host also left viewers at home reaching for the tissues as he praised her for being a loyal friend and wonderful mother to her children.

“Well that poem from @Schofe to @hollywills gave us feels @thismorning. Happy 40th Holly,” said one fan on Twitter after the adorable message.

A second agreed: “@thismorning Holly’s poem made me well up .”

While a third also was left emotional: “Knew she was going to cry as soon as they said there was a poem. Got a bit teary myself. #ThisMorning.”
