It’s not an Ugly Betty revival but it’s pretty darn close: Michael Urie and Becki Newton will play siblings in a sitcom that’s in development at CBS, TVLine has learned.

Titled Fun, the multi-cam comedy — from Sex and the City EP Michael Patrick King and Ugly Betty scribes Tracy Poust and Jon Kinnally — is described as “a life-long love story between a brother (Urie) and a sister (Newton), who always encourage each other to have fun. No matter what hardship life is currently serving up. Fun celebrates life — in spite of the fact that the family business is a funeral home. As they say in their family: “You can’t spell funeral without f-u-n.” The brother returns to his Pennsylvania hometown to help his sister run the struggling business after his emotional and devastating break-up with… show business.”

Urie and Newton — who for four seasons played co-workers/besties/partners in crime Marc and Amanda on Ugly Betty — will also serve as producers on the project, which has scored a pilot production commitment from CBS.

Urie is currently recurring on TV Land’s Younger while Newton just wrapped a two-season stint on HBO’s Divorce.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

Mr. Robot dream team of show creator Sam Esmail and star Rami Malek are set to reteam for a thriller for Universal. Esmail will direct Malek, who will play an undercover Muslim FBI agent in the adaptation of a memoir, American Radical.

Esmail is set to helm and Malek will headline American Radical, based on Tamer Elnoury and Kevin Maurer‘s memoir of the same name, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Esmail and Malek will both produce the adaptation along with Chad Hamilton of Anonymous Content.

Published in October, American Radical follows Elnoury, a pseudonym of an American Muslim police officer who joins a counterterrorism unit after 9/11. The memoir chronicles his infiltrating of an al-Qaeda group that had designs on an attack, as well as his struggles as a proud Muslim-American patriot.

Here’s the book’s synopsis via Amazon:

A longtime undercover agent, Tamer Elnoury joined an elite counterterrorism unit after September 11. Its express purpose is to gain the trust of terrorists whose goals are to take out as many Americans in as public and as devastating a way possible. It’s a furious race against the clock for Tamer and his unit to stop them before they can implement their plans. Yet as new as this war still is, the techniques are as old as time: listen, record, and prove terrorist intent.

Due to his ongoing work for the FBI, Elnoury writes under a pseudonym. An Arabic-speaking Muslim American, a patriot, a hero: To many Americans, it will be a revelation that he and his team even exist, let alone the vital and dangerous work they do keeping all Americans safe.

It’s no surprise that Esmail’s prodigal return to feature filmmaking will star his Mr. Robot lead Rami Malek. Esmail made a splash in the movie industry with his directorial debut Comet in 2014, but has since worked almost exclusively in TV, crafting his harrowing noir masterpiece Mr. Robot. The series has garnered Esmail a handful of accolades, including six Emmy nominations and an Emmy for Best Actor for Malek.

American Radical seems like a perfect fit for both Esmail and Malek. Malek has spent the past three years playing a mentally unstable anarchist hacker, but will likely find a common thread in the noble outcast of Elnoury. Malek’s Egyptian background makes him a strong fit for the role as well. Esmail seems to revel in directing troubled antiheroic men, so American Radical seems like a match.

American Radical has no set release date.

Kate McKinnon Teaming with Director Danny Boyle for New Comedy https://briefnews.eu/kate-mckinnon-teaming-with-director-danny-boyle-for-new-comedy/ https://briefnews.eu/kate-mckinnon-teaming-with-director-danny-boyle-for-new-comedy/#respond Sat, 31 Mar 2018 13:24:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kate-mckinnon-teaming-with-director-danny-boyle-for-new-comedy/ New Kate McKinnon Movie

Right now, the best cast member on Saturday Night Live is Kate McKinnon. She has an incredible array of outstanding recurring impressions, and she also brings plenty of memorable original characters to life too. That limits the time she can spend starring in movies, but she’ll be part of a new big screen comedy coming from two outstanding British filmmakers.

Variety reports Universal has a new comedy coming from Slumdog Millionaire and Steve Jobs director Danny Boyle with a script from About Time and Love Actually writer Richard Curtis. The film has just landed Kate McKinnon as part of the cast, which already includes Baby Driver co-star Lily James and EastEnders star Himesh Patel.

As of now, the comedy doesn’t have a title, which is amusing since the film also comes from the production company Working Title, and details are fairly scare on the project. All we know is the story will be music-themed and set in either the 1960s or the 1970s, but we have no idea who any of the cast members are playing so far.

Danny Boyle isn’t particularly known for his comedy work, though he did dabble in the genre with A Life Less Ordinary back in 1997. But his dramas frequently do have some comedy in them, from Trainspotting to Slumdog Millionaire. Boyle is busy developing the next James Bond adventure for Daniel Craig, but he will direct this comedy before the 007 sequel gets in front of a camera.

Screenwriter Richard Curtis has definitely delivered some lighter fare with romantic comedies like Bridget Jones’s Diary, but perhaps more relevant is his work on the music-fueled ensemble comedy Pirate Radio (or The Boat That Rocked across the pond). If this comedy is something along those lines, then consider me excited.

As for McKinnon, her career on the big screen is somewhat limited to the time investment that SNL requires. But she’s had time to lend her voices to films like The Angry Birds Movie and Ferdinand, not to mention supporting roles in Office Christmas Party and Rough Night. Plus, she was the best team member on the Ghostbusters reboot, and she is co-leading the action comedy The Spy Who Dumped Me. This sounds like it will be just another supporting role for the comedienne, but I have a feeling that, soon enough, she’ll be breaking from SNL and will start leading comedies of her own.

Why Is Nintendo Teaming with Illumination for the Animated ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Movie? https://briefnews.eu/why-is-nintendo-teaming-with-illumination-for-the-animated-super-mario-bros-movie/ https://briefnews.eu/why-is-nintendo-teaming-with-illumination-for-the-animated-super-mario-bros-movie/#respond Sun, 11 Feb 2018 20:29:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/why-is-nintendo-teaming-with-illumination-for-the-animated-super-mario-bros-movie/ Animated Mario Movie

Just last month we got confirmation that Nintendo was teaming with Illumination Entertainment to create an animated Super Mario Bros. movie. The studio behind movies like Despicable Me, Minions and The Secret Life of Pets seemed like an odd choice to bring the Nintendo video game character to the big screen again after all these years, but Nintendo’s co-representative director Shigeru Miyamoto recently explained during an investors meeting why they went with the Universal based animation company.

Find out why the animated Mario movie is heading to Illumination Entertainment below.

Shigeru Miyamoto explained (in a translated statement via Bleeding Cool) how he first came to consider Illumination to make a Mario movie:

“I’ve been considering an animated film for many years now. There has long been talk that Nintendo could make a movie because ‘making a game is like making a movie.’ But they are completely different to me. Interactive experiences are completely different from non-interactive media, and to make a movie, I want a film expert to do the work. Thinking that way, I have talked with all sorts of different movie directors and producers, and eventually I was introduced to Illumination via Universal Parks & Resorts, with whom we are developing theme park attractions.”

Remember that Universal Studios is in the midst of bringing a Super Mario World theme park to their Japan location, so Nintendo was already collaborating with the company, making it easier to branch out into feature film work. But it’s not just as simple as synergy between the companies. Miyamoto continued:

“As a producer, [Illumination’s CEO] Chris Meledandri is noted here for movies like Minions and Sing, but he is a veteran with a ton of experience, including the movie Ice Age and stints at companies like 20th Century Fox Animation. When I talked with Chris, he said he had read a lot of interviews with me and felt we had a similar approach to creation. Talking about our similarities, we clicked and decided maybe we should do some kind of collaboration. We started our conversation over two years ago, and finally reached the stage where we could make an announcement. Chris is extremely cost-conscious and time-conscious in his quest to make successful movies. We decided to try making a movie together, and distributing the completed movie globally through Universal Pictures.”

There’s No Guarantee It Will Happen

So it sounds like Miyamoto and the executives at Nintendo feel comfortable that Meledandri has the right vision and mind to bring Mario to life on the big screen in the right way. However, just because they’ve announced the project doesn’t mean it will definitely go forward. Miyamoto also noted:

“We’ve talked together and share the feeling that if we can’t make something interesting we’ll just call it quits. But we’ve already met a number of times to hash out the screenplay, our talks together are progressing, and I hope to make an announcement once we’ve ironed out some things like the schedule.”

There’s no word on when this animated Mario movie might end up in theaters, but for now it’s still in development. If all goes well, this could become a pillar of Universal’s film slate, and could lead to more film adaptations of Nintendo’s video games, whether they’re animated or live-action. With the theme park developments already in the works, it sounds like Universal and Nintendo are starting a long, lucrative relationship, but we’ll see how it goes.

  • Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway, and JPMorgan are teaming up to try to make healthcare more affordable for their US-based employees.
  • Insurance stocks like UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, Anthem and others are deeply in the red early Tuesday after the news hit.

Shares of insurance providers, benefits managers, pharmacies and other healthcare cimoabues are getting smoked in pre-market trading after three of the countries largest companies — Amazon, JPMorgan and Berkshire Hathaway — announced they were teaming up to create a new, independent healthcare company for their employees that will be “free from profit-making incentives and constraints.”

Here’s the standings:

The negative effect the announced collaboration is having on healthcare stocks is just the latest example of the outsized influence both Amazon and Berkshire can have on industries they explore. Armed with mountains of cash and an abundance of resources, their forays into new sectors can erase billions of dollars of market value in a short time.

Americans on average spent $ 714, or 1.6% of their take-home pay on out-of-pocket healthcare costs in 2016, according to a report from JPMorgan Chase. That was up 3.6% from the year before and up 13.5% from 2013. The bank also found that the US spent 18% of gross domestic product on healthcare, up from 13% in 2000.

“The ballooning costs of healthcare act as a hungry tapeworm on the American economy,” Berkshire Hathaway’s chairman and CEO, Warren Buffett, said in the statement.

“Our group does not come to this problem with answers. But we also do not accept it as inevitable. Rather, we share the belief that putting our collective resources behind the country’s best talent can, in time, check the rise in health costs while concurrently enhancing patient satisfaction and outcomes.”

Aetna’s move also correlates with its earnings report Tuesday morning that beat analyst expectations.

  • Reuters reports that Ford is expected to sign an agreement with Alibaba that could allow it to try its hand at selling cars on the company’s online platform in China.
  • The agreement would also reportedly allow the automaker to test a store concept called an “Auto Vending Machine.
  • If Ford likes the business model, there’s no telling how long it would take to convince lawmakers and regulators to allow something similar in the U.S.

Auto dealerships in the U.S. have quite a lot of lobbying power, which means strong influence over lawmakers who can write laws in their favor or against them, but what would happen if automakers turn their backs on dealerships and lobby only for themselves? We could find out in the coming years if Ford Motor Company  signs a deal with Alibaba Group Holding Ltd in China and finds success.

Ford selling cars with Alibaba in China

Citing a source at the automaker, Reuters reports that Ford is expected to sign an agreement with Alibaba that could allow it to try its hand at selling cars on the company’s online platform in China. The deal could be announced as early as tomorrow, and it would reportedly allow the U.S.-based automaker to sell cars on Tmall, which is Alibaba’s e-commerce division.

In addition to Ford selling cars with Alibaba, the agreement would also reportedly allow the automaker to test a store concept called an “Auto Vending Machine.” The sales on Tmall and having its own store concept will allow the automaker to test direct sales of its vehicles—a sales model that has been met with heavy opposition in the U.S. Tesla has been barred from sales in many states due to its direct sales model because automakers are required to sell their vehicles through dealerships in most states.

Meeting about Ford selling cars with Alibaba

According to Reuters’ source, Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford Jr. and Ford Chief Executive Jim Hackett are scheduled to sign a letter of intent with Alibaba in Hangzhou, China tomorrow. The letter of intent will reportedly set down the details of the partnership between the two companies.

The source said that by selling cars with Alibaba, Ford is angling for a position in the emerging vehicle marketplace in China—a future in which more vehicles are being sold online. The automaker is also said to be overhauling its strategy for China, where it has lost its momentum in growth.

Although a spokesperson for the automaker would not confirm or deny Reuters’ report about Ford selling cars with Alibaba in China, a spokesman did tell the news agency that the company plans to make an announcement in Hangzhou on Thursday. Alibaba is headquartered in Hangzhou.

A Ford Automated Vending Machine in China

Reuters’ source at Ford also reportedly provided details about what Ford’s direct-sales presence in China could look like. Under the terms of the agreement, the automaker could have franchised retail stores that would deliver cars that are bought online. The franchised retail stores could also repair and offer maintenance on the vehicles, which still makes the sales model sound like auto dealerships in the U.S.

However, the deal that will reportedly have Ford selling cars with Alibaba would also enable the automaker to use Tmall’s “Automotive Vending Machine.” That’s a fancy way of saying a massive parking garage holding vehicles that are sold directly to consumers online. Reuters adds that the cars being sold could come from Ford directly or from dealerships, but the companies are still working out the details.

Alibaba explains that Tmall allows consumers to browse the vehicles stored in Tmall’s “Automotive Vending Machine” and then decide whether they want to buy one on the spot or test-drive it first. Then the vehicle is transferred to the ground floor, where they take delivery of it.

Although this business model could include dealerships, Ford is on a slippery slope heading toward direct-to-consumer vehicle sales. It’s hard to imagine how dealers wouldn’t see this plan as a threat to their livelihood because of how Tesla sells its vehicles directly to consumers online. It’s also important to note that Tesla set up a presence on Tmall a few years ago.

However, dealers may not have much to say about Ford’s plan, particularly since this is said to be happening in China. But if Ford likes the business model, there’s no telling how long it would take to convince lawmakers and regulators to allow something similar in the U.S.

Next Step: Uber and Volvo Teaming to Build Thousands of Driverless Cars https://briefnews.eu/next-step-uber-and-volvo-teaming-to-build-thousands-of-driverless-cars/ https://briefnews.eu/next-step-uber-and-volvo-teaming-to-build-thousands-of-driverless-cars/#respond Tue, 21 Nov 2017 20:04:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/next-step-uber-and-volvo-teaming-to-build-thousands-of-driverless-cars/ Uber-autonomous-2

–

Volvo and Uber will undertake a massive expansion of their partnership involving automated vehicles over the next three years. After spending the past 15 months building prototypes that were subsequently deployed in select cities around the United States with human safety drivers behind the wheel, the two companies signed an agreement announced Monday that calls for Uber to purchase approximately 24,000 XC90 SUVs from the Swedish carmaker.

–

Intended for fully driverless operations, the vehicles are slated to arrive in Uber’s hands between 2019 and 2021. Based on current plans of competitors racing toward autonomous deployments, a self-driving fleet of that size would constitute the largest in the world.

–

Once Uber obtains the base vehicles, which are built on Volvo’s modular Scalable Product Architecture, the ride-hailing company will outfit them with its own self-driving software and sensors. Ostensibly, Uber’s plans would include deploying them in commercial operations shortly thereafter, but those plans are still being formed.

–

Volvo-Uber3

–

“This deal puts us on the path toward mass produced self-driving vehicles at scale,” said Jeff Miller, Uber’s head of automotive alliances. “And it’ll allow us to roll out autonomous vehicles at scale and provides us sufficient flexibility to begin scaling production when our tech is ready.”

–

Although the Volvo deal adds general guidance on that time frame, there are still questions regarding the mettle of Uber’s autonomous technology. A March 2017 report from analysts at Navigant Research ranked Uber’s self-driving program 16th on a leaderboard containing the major companies working on autonomous technology. Since then, Uber’s path toward developing its own technology has only grown more complicated. Waymo, a top competitor, has filed a lawsuit claiming one of Uber’s top engineers stole trade secrets related to lidar, a sensor that helps self-driving systems detect the road and obstacles. That trial is scheduled to begin December 4.

–

Uber and Volvo first joined together in August 2016, when the two companies announced a $ 300 million agreement that covered production of 100 of the base XC90s for Uber’s use in pilot projects in Pittsburgh, San Francisco, and metro Phoenix. To date, Volvo has supplied more than 200 vehicles, according to Miller. But that’s about to be dwarfed.

-when our tech is ready.”

”

–

–

The arrival of 24,000 autonomous vehicles—a number that an Uber spokesperson says is a general framework but not etched into the contract—would mark a milestone for driverless vehicles, but the new deal is significant for another reason. In its current business model, Uber operates its ride-hailing service without owning its own vehicles. But its agreement with Volvo signals a shift in which Uber actually will own the driverless cars in its network.

–

That’s an expensive proposition. Terms of Monday’s agreement were not disclosed, but Financial Times calculations indicate it may have cost Uber in the neighborhood of $ 1.4 billion. Consider that approximately 37,000 ride-hailing-network drivers are operating in San Francisco alone, and the cost of owning a global fleet becomes more apparent and daunting.

–

–

The new deal between Uber and Volvo is nonexclusive, meaning both companies remain free to pursue similar arrangements with other businesses. Volvo intends to equip the same base XC90 vehicles with its proprietary self-driving tech and launch its own fully autonomous cars in 2021. In that sense, the deal is indicative of a new reality, one in which traditional carmakers may both supply and compete with ride-hailing and car-sharing networks.

–

“The automotive industry is being disrupted by technology, and Volvo Cars chooses to be an active part of that disruption,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive officer of Volvo. “Our aim is to be the supplier of choice for autonomous-driving ride-sharing service providers globally. Today’s agreement with Uber is a primary example of that strategic direction.”

Ford is teaming up with a Chinese automaker to build electric cars in China (F) https://briefnews.eu/ford-is-teaming-up-with-a-chinese-automaker-to-build-electric-cars-in-china-f/ https://briefnews.eu/ford-is-teaming-up-with-a-chinese-automaker-to-build-electric-cars-in-china-f/#respond Mon, 13 Nov 2017 09:28:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ford-is-teaming-up-with-a-chinese-automaker-to-build-electric-cars-in-china-f/ JV ford agreement chinaFord Motor Company

  • Ford announced this week it is partnering with Chinese automaker Zotye to build electric cars in the country.
  • They won’t be Ford or Zotye cars, but will be a a new brand.
  • The$ 756 million joint company wil build a dedicated research center and facroty near Shanhai.

It’s official: Ford Motor Company has entered into a new joint venture that will build electric vehicles in — and for — China.

It’s the latest move in Ford CEO Jim Hackett’s effort to push the Blue Oval more quickly into the high-tech future. Here are the high points of the deal announced by Ford and its latest Chinese business partner:

  • Ford’s partner in the deal is the privately held Chinese automaker Anhui Zotye Automobile, known as Zotye Auto.
  • Ford and Zotye Auto will each own 50% of the new joint venture, which will be called Zotye Ford Automobile Co., Ltd. (“Zotye Ford” for short).
  • Pending regulatory approval (never a sure thing in China), Zotye Ford will develop and manufacture “a range of stylish and affordable electric vehicles for consumers in China.”
  • The partners have invested a total of 5 billion yuan (about $ 756 million) in the venture.
  • The vehicles built by Zotye Ford won’t be Fords (or Zotyes); they’ll be sold under a new Chinese brand.
  • Zotye Ford plans to build a dedicated research and development center, a new factory in China’s Zhejiang Province (near Shanghai, on China’s eastern coast), and its own sales and service network.

The deal isn’t a surprise; Ford and Zotye Auto said in August that they were exploring the possibility of a joint venture focused on electric vehicles. Ford’s Asia Pacific chief, Peter Fleet, said that Zotye Ford’s vehicles will be aimed at young urban buyers: “Subject to regulatory approval, Zotye Ford will introduce a new brand family of small all-electric vehicles. We will be exploring innovative vehicle connectivity and mobility service solutions for a new generation of young city-dwelling Chinese customers.”

About Ford’s new EV partner: Zotye Auto

Zotye Auto is a privately held automaker headquartered in Huangshan City, about 300 miles west of Shanghai. It’s pretty small: Zotye sold about 323,000 vehicles in 2016, according to JATO Dynamics. (For comparison, Ford shipped about 6.7 million vehicles in 2016.)

To the extent that Zotye Auto was known at all outside of China before its association with Ford, it was because of its SR9 model, an inexpensive SUV that looks a lot (and I mean a whole lot) like a Porsche Macan. But in addition to the SR9 and Zotye’s other internal-combustion SUVs, the company has had some recent success with small, affordable electric vehicles. Its E200, a tiny two-seater, has done fairly well in smoggy Beijing, where internal-combustion vehicles are restricted due to air-quality concerns.

Ford has characterized Zotye Auto as the market leader in China’s “all-electric small vehicle segment.” It has sold more than 22,500 all-electric vehicles in China this year through October. (That may not sound like a lot, but consider: General Motors sold just over 17,000 Chevrolet Bolt EVs in the U.S. over the same period.)

What it means for Ford

It’s an interesting venture. The market for small affordable electric vehicles in China is still small in terms of total sales, but stricter regulations on internal-combustion engines make it likely that it will grow quite large in time. This new joint venture will give Ford a stake in that market, which if nothing else will help inform its efforts to develop a line of Ford-brand electric vehicles for global markets. It’s also good business: The Chinese government wants to see manufacturers building electric vehicles under Chinese brands; it’s likely that Ford is earning some useful brownie points here.

Between Zotye, which has already staked out a share of the market as it exists today, and Ford, a global automaker with a reputation (in China, at least) for building premium, high-quality vehicles, the joint venture seems to stand a good chance of success. But of course, it’s early days: If the market for these little vehicles grows significantly, other global automakers will enter the fray.

Zotye Auto is an addition to Ford’s previously announced electric-vehicle efforts. The Blue Oval announced earlier this year that at least 70% of Ford-brand vehicles sold in China will offer “electrified” drivetrain options by 2025. (“Electrified” is Ford-speak for hybrids as well as fully electric vehicles.)

More broadly, Ford is known to be working on an accelerated plan to develop battery-electric vehicles. The company is expected to share details sometime in the next few months.

Zotye Ford will be Ford’s third joint venture in China; it follows Changan Ford, which builds Ford-brand passenger vehicles, and Jiangling Motors, which builds commercial vehicles under the Ford and JMC brands.

Long story short: There’s some real upside for Ford here

The upshot: The new joint venture seems likely to enhance Ford’s standing in China, and to provide useful information and expertise for its own electric-vehicle development efforts — and it could be profitable in time, too.
