Part of the tragedy of “Cowboy Bebop” is how the main characters are so weighed down by their pasts that they’re unable to live in the present. The creative team behind the classic anime series didn’t share this attitude though. When making the series, “Hajime Yatate” (their collective pseudonym) were all focused on the present, not what lay behind or ahead of them.
Series director Shinichirō Watanabe and producer Masahiko Minami discussed their episode-by-episode attitude at a roundtable for the show’s 20th anniversary, held at French convention Japan Expo 2018. Watannabe recounted (transcribed by SakuraBlog):
“I had an episodic series in mind from the get-go. I wanted every episode to feel fresh. And all the aforementioned problems we encountered only reinforced that vision of the series I had… But we still needed a thread, albeit thin, common to all episodes for the setting, world elements, characters, etc.”
Those thin threads wound up being (a.) the characters hunting bounties and (b.) confronting faces from their pasts. However, even these storylines lent themselves well to the series’ episodic format. This approach was solidified by the crew treating every episode like its own standalone story, and allowing all sorts of staff members to pitch in.

The “Cowboy Bebop” opening sequence, “Tank!” by the Seatbelts, contains a bold declaration hidden in its scrolling text animation: “the work that becomes a new genre itself will be called… Cowboy Bebop.” On a macro and micro level, “Bebop” mixes so many influences it defies categorization.
The setting may be science fiction, but true to the “Cowboy” part of the title, there’s Western influence too: the Solar System is a newly-settled, lawless frontier. The character archetypes owe more to Film Noir — Spike’s a former criminal, Jet an ex-cop, Faye a wannabe femme fatale. Yoko Kanno’s music score is as eclectic as the storytelling. “The Real Folk Blues” mixes jazzy saxophone riffs with lyrics out of a lovelorn ballad.
Episode by episode, widely different tones are explored. “Black Dog Serenade” is one of the show’s darkest chapters, explaining how Jet lost his right arm thanks to his corrupt ex-partner, Fad. The very next episode, “Mushroom Samba,” is the show’s silliest, featuring the adventures of comic relief character “Radical” Edward and pet “data dog” Ein while the rest Bebop crew accidentally get high on psychedelic mushrooms. While “Serenade” is a hardboiled noir, “Samba” is a love-letter to 70s stoner and blaxploitation movies — a woman who suspiciously resembles Pam Grier even shows up.
At the Japan Expo panel, Watannabe mentioned how the team enlisted different staff members for every episode to ensure each was unique. Dai Sato, a totally green writer, scripted two “Cowboy Bebop” episodes, while Minami broke out of his producing role and worked directly on episode 10; he gave the episode an “enka”-inspired tone.
If you make every episode feel different, you risk creating an unbalanced series. However, “Cowboy Bebop” begins as such a unique creation that introducing a new ingredient never upsets the flavor.

Watannabe acknowledged there was another reason they made “Cowboy Bebop” episodic:
“Every episode was written like it was the last because we knew the series may be called off any time.”
This attitude helps explain episode 11, “Toys in the Attic.” In that “Alien” parody, the Bebop crew is picked off one-by-one by a poisonous blob creature. The episode ends with everyone unconscious except for Ed, who beats the creature by eating it. In the preview for the next episode, Ed claims everyone died, “Bebop” is over and the next show will be “Cowgirl Ed.” Of course that isn’t true and everyone’s fine in episode 12. If the series had ended there, what a wild ending it would’ve been.
Watannabe’s fears of a premature end weren’t simple paranoia. For starters, “Cowboy Bebop” had trouble getting funding. The series’ sponsor Bandai just wanted sell spaceship toys, but pulled back thanks to the offbeat narrative that Sunrise designed for their toy commercial. If subsidiary Bandai Visual hadn’t stepped in, “Cowboy Bebop” may not have gotten off the ground.
Plus, the series was yanked off the air at one point. TV Tokyo aired only 12 “Bebop” episodes (and a clip show) from April 3 to June 26, 1998. Thankfully, the series soon aired in its entirety on Wowow, from October 24, 1998 until April 3, 1999. When “Cowboy Bebop” made its way to the U.S., airing on Adult Swim in 2001, its reputation as a classic was solidified. The series’ episodic approach and heavy western influence made it accessible to American audiences, who weren’t as well-versed in anime then as they are now.
By putting care into each episode, Watannabe, Minami, and their Sunrise teammates created something even greater than the sum of its unique parts.

]]>The Mercedes-AMG F1 team, however, has experimented with a way to reduce freight emissions. It used hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO 100) biofuel in 16 trucks as it moved operations between Spa, Zandvoort and Monza for the final three European grands prix of the season. Since those circuits are relatively close to each other, Mercedes didn't need to rely on, say, air freight to ship cars and components. That gave the team a good opportunity to test the biofuel, given a total driving distance of around 1,400 kilometers (870 miles). However, the team noted it needed to use diesel fuel for the last 20km (just over 12 miles) due to supply issues.
An analysis found that using HVO 100 reduced freight emissions by 89 percent. Overall, Mercedes saved 44,091kg (97,204 pounds) of carbon dioxide emissions, compared with solely using diesel for both journeys. It noted HVO 100 is derived from vegetable oils, waste oils and fats and that it's entirely free of fossil fuels. The fuel also produces less Nox and particulate emissions.
“Sustainability is at the heart of our operations. Trialing the use of biofuels for our land freight is another example of our commitment to embed sustainability in every decision we make and action we take," Mercedes F1 team principal Toto Wolff said. "We aim to be on the cutting edge of change and hope we can make the adoption of sustainable technology possible as we are all in the race towards a sustainable tomorrow.”
Other biofuels are being tested for use in Formula 1. Teams started using E10 biofuels (which contain 10 percent renewable ethanol) in F1 cars this season as part of the transition to fully sustainable fuels. While that's some distance away from employing fully sustainable fuels, the use of E10 and HVO 100 are positive steps toward making motorsport much healthier for the environment.

Set in 1863, about a decade after Commodore Matthew Perry ended Japan's isolation from the West, the game grounds the player in an era of dramatic technological and political change. You'll play as a wandering Ronin navigating a fractured country. This being a Team Ninja project, expect stylish third-person melee combat. It also looks like the game will take inspiration from Western open-world games like Assassin's Creed — which, you have to admit, is fitting given the subject matter. Rise of the Ronin will be a PlayStation console exclusive when it arrives sometime in 2024.

This week on SEAL Team, we learned why NCIS hauled Jason out of the Bulkhead in handcuffs. Did depositions from those around him help his case? And what advice did Mandy Ellis have to offer?
In an episode directed by Mandy herself aka former cast member Jessica Paré, Jason in short order learned that he was being charged with unlawfully killing an unarmed citizen during the team’s most recent op, in Jordan. His failure to ensure that the target was armed before the use of lethal force put him in violation of UCMJ Article 119, making for a manslaughter charge.
Speculating that he was merely a “pound of flesh” to be exacted in trade for the U.S. operating in friendly Jordan, Jason was fixin’ to mount a voracious defense, but his JAG, Lt. Commander Williams (played by recent Mom guest star Natasha Hall), counseled him to keep his cool and simply listen at the preliminary hearing where the U.S. government laid out their case. Alas, said hearing cued up video evidence, captured by the cell phone the team later seized, of Jason gunning down what certainly appeared to be an unarmed man.
Because you may be curious, as I was, here is a screenshot that is closer to Jason’s own floor-below POV during his problematic shooting, from the previous episode.
As soon as Jason was initially hauled in, Bravo Team ahead of their individual depositions was given “no contact” orders to not discuss the op/case with Jason or among themselves. Clay admittedly overshared a bit with Stella the World’s Best Girlfriend — namely, that Raqqa Jacques, the man who tortured Ray, had been their target — which Ray later blasted him for. Ray himself lawyered up before delivering his deposition as Chief Warrant Officer, a move that raised a flag for Jason’s JAG. If Ray was possibly throwing Jason under the bus, should Jason return the favor in a bid to share blame and hope for a lighter sentence? Or should Jason go ahead and take a plea deal (to Article 114/Reckless Endangerment, resulting in a “less-than-honorable discharge”)?
Nudged by Lindell to reach out to those outside of his Bravo circle, Jason met up at the Bulkhead with Mandy, who was late because of, no joke, a parasailing lesson (“I have a life now”) and was soon to a board a plane to… somewhere. Mandy of course sympathized with her former colleague’s situation, and regretted she was no longer in a position to “trade state secrets to rescue you.” Jason wondered if he’d been better off to follow her out of that taco stand months ago, but Mandy knows full well he soon enough would have been yearning for his microwave — and the brotherhood Bravo offers, which she says was difference between her decision and his, “why you had to stay and I didnt.” Seeing Jason torn between surrendering or making a team member collateral damage — neither of which is the Jason Hayes Way, she notes — Mandy says that a man who has bravely led brothers into the pits of Hell surely can stand up and convince a jury he did right.
Alas, once all the dispositions were in — including that of Davis, who was asked if Jason knew that their HVT was the man who tortured Ray — Jason’s case was not dismissed. Rather, because he was ostensibly out for revenge on Ray’s behalf, the charge has been upped… to murder.
What did you think about how things unfolded, and Mandy’s (brief) return?

The following contains spoilers from the WandaVision finale and episodes leading up to it.
Once the dust settled in the WandaVision finale (now streaming on Disney+), yes, Wanda (played by Elizabeth Olsen) had vanquished witchy rival Agatha Harkness (Kathryn hahn). And yes, she freed the people of Westview, N.J. from the spell that had held them hostage in her idyllic world, in the course of sacrificing the family she had conjured for herself.
But the fact remains that — as revealed earlier by Agatha, and later owned up to by Wanda herself — these people not only had been robbed of their identities but, as one noted, “When you let us sleep, we have your nightmares!”
When Wanda walked into town after losing Vision and their sons to the vanished Hex, Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) tried to alleviate some of the sorceress’ guilt, saying, “They’ll never know what you sacrificed for them.” But Wanda knew that was far from true, saying, “It wouldn’t change how they see me.”
Some viewers, though, felt that that exchange was a bit too pat. That though Wanda is owning her role in Westview’s torture, it doesn’t at all change that it happened.
So, was there ever “more” to that final scene, an attempt to do better by the people of Westview?
“There’s so much conversation about taking Westview hostage in the finale as it is,” WandaVision director Matt Shakman notes. In that mid-episode scene, “We have Agatha really bringing it to Wanda, saying, ‘Are you a hero or are you a villain? Heroes don’t torture people.’ That’s a huge moment in the finale, when Wanda has to wrestle with that.”
Speaking to the scene following the Hex’s collapse, head writer Jac Schaeffer tells TVLine, “I think Wanda’s walk of shame back into the town is really powerful, and it was written as such on the page. It was meant to be like an assault of death glares from people, and we were meant to feel how angry they all are.
“I remember a note from [Marvel Studios chief] Kevin [Feige] being like, ‘More, more, let’s feel that for her, let’s understand that what she did was terrible,’” Schaeffer adds.
To those who wished a happier ending for Westview, “No, that’s not the story we’re telling, that now [Wanda] is has to make everything OK,” Schaeffer says. “It wasn’t about landing her in a way where it’s like, ‘Everything’s wrapped up and squeaky clean, and she’s a hero and has done no wrong!’ She’s done a lot of wrong. And there will probably be reckonings down the line. No, I like how that’s in the gray area of misdeeds that she’s been involved in.”
As director of the Wanda/Monica scene at the end, Shakman says “there were many versions of that, for sure, but nothing that was much longer.” He then echoes Schaeffer’s reverence for the complicated moment, saying, “I think it’s a beautiful scene. We’re not trying to let Wanda off the hook at all. The daggers that she’s getting from every townsperson as she walks through town should clearly show that she’s not being forgiven, and she won’t be forgiven, by them. She understands that.”
Have those residents of Westview been left to rue Wanda and be haunted by their time in spell-driven servitude? And what is to come of Agatha, who was returned by Wanda to her “Agnes” persona? Will Sarah, Sharon et al forever be giving their nosy neighbor the stink eye?
“I can’t really speak to [the residents], because it’s beyond the scope of the show, which is my department,” Schaeffer defers. “But with regard to Agatha, it’s what Wanda says: You’re going to live here, she does a mind control spell on Agatha, and then says, No one will bother you. In my mind, that means Agatha lives, or will live, in some kind of bubble. No one’s going to question her or have a hard time with her. Wanda has stashed her there, and also defanged her, essentially.” (With reporting by Rebecca Iannucci)

As promised back in December, former SEAL Team cast member Jessica Paré recently rejoined the CBS drama — to direct an important upcoming episode. And TVLine has exclusive photos(below) of her calling the shots in her directorial debut.
An original cast member, Paré’s run as a series regular came to an end in this season’s two-part premiere, when Mandy — coming out of the latest deployment, during which she tragically lost another asset — told Jason (David Boreanaz) that she has decided she has served her share of time. No longer can she just keep “moving forward,” as he does.
“Losing a CI in Venezuela, and then losing another one in Afghanistan… it has taken a toll on Mandy,” showrunner Spencer Hudnut told TVLine. “The choice she made was a brave one, realizing much like Jason that this job has cost her so much, and she has the opportunity to break away and find a life for herself. It’s a really difficult choice for Mandy…. But in that moment, she found the strength to walk away.”
Hudnut said then that the door was purposely left open for Paré to return — first, as the director of the episode airing Wednesday, March 24, which is hard to tease (due to what happens on-screen in the coming weeks), but let’s just say that “Jason must fight for his career without the support of his brothers.” Hudnut also said that Paré would return to guest-star in a late Season 4 episode, though that is not yet on the books.

It was then announced that NCIS’s 13th season would be DiNozzo’s last, and he subsequently left the team when he discovered he had a daughter with the then presumed dead Ziva David.
However, following Ziva’s unexpected return in 2019, fans are optimistic that more old favourites could eventually make their way back for the series.
Tony DiNozzo has always wanted to head his own team, but sadly didn’t have the chance to take over Gibbs’ mantle, or form a crew of his own in another city, before his exit.
Weatherly now leads CBS’s legal drama Bull, which is currently in its fifth season.

Unless, of course, he took Garrett’s advice to ‘kill the king’ and take out John Dutton in the season finale, giving him the power to do with the vast Yellowstone ranch whatever he pleases.
The same viewer also pointed out Will Patton’s appearance continues his trend of appearing as a rival for fellow Hollywood legend, Kevin Costner.
They wrapped up their theory and said: “Will Patton rules, and it’s nice to see him complete the ‘I Hate Kevin Costner’ Trinity, after No Way Out and the not-nearly-as-bad-as-everyone-says The Postman. He better be a series regular.”
Viewers can now only hope Taylor Sheridan embraces Will Patton’s potential and fully utilises the actor’s strengths in Yellowstone’s upcoming fourth season.
Yellowstone will return with season 4 in 2021 on Paramount.

Dan Walker and Louise Minchin returned with their final show of the week and BBC Breakfast viewers saw them discuss a newspaper story about homeschooling. Up and down the nation, every weekday, parents are having to ensure their children attend online classes and workshops while lockdown continues. But some parents and guardians have taken home education to a whole new level and found themselves getting involved in the lessons. Louise spoke about her own experience revealing a blunder she made with the BBC team.
“Shall we look at the inside pages? What have you got?” Louise asked her co-star.
“I’ve got homeschooling,” Dan remarked and she added: “On the top of so many people’s agenda, morning everybody if you’re starting the day.”
“Are you one of those parents who chats a bit during your homeschool, or do you have one of those in the class?” he asked.
“Because the behaviour of children is one of the biggest challenges in the classroom, but the behaviour of parents is proving a bit of an issue for teachers.

“One year four teacher wrote on Twitter: ‘I have parents whispering answers to their children today on Microsoft Teams.’
“She received 166 comments on this and loads of other people said: ‘I’ve got the same sort of issue.’
“One teacher said: ‘I had a child get stuck into an answer and he struggled to finish it off, so his mum came into frame and gave the rest of the answer.’
“Even teachers cannot resist sitting in judgement on parents as well because there’s one teacher who said: ‘I have a woman who sits with a notebook and pen and a judgy look in full view of camera.’”
“‘Get out of the way!’” Dan joked.
It comes after the BBC created a homeschooling schedule which sees BBC Bitesize, BBC Two and CBBC providing educational programmes and resources to aid children learning from home.
BBC Breakfast are also doing their bit, they have a ‘Lockdown Life’ segment which includes interviews with inspirational guests.
On Wednesday morning, Olympic medallist Adam Peaty joined the BBC hosts to talk about how to stay fit while gyms, leisure centres and clubs are shut.
In the immediate wake of last week’s shocking explosion, we saw the charred and crumbled cafe, and Ray’s body on the floor behind the fallen table at which he had and State Dept. colleague Olivia Green been seated. And then a figure approached, nudging his body… which was still alive, we saw.
Back home, all they knew was that Ray was missing, and Jason personally delivered the news to Naima, at the family’s new home. Soon enough, all of Bravo descended upon the Perrys, as did Natalie and a most welcome Stella (who apparently still grabs the occasional coffee with Ray’s wife). While congregated, Sonny and Thirty got into it a bit, each blaming the other for Bravo being grounded. But it wasn’t long until Bravo got buzzed to report in, leaving Jason and Clay behind. Jason, though, was resolved to play some role in the search for Ray, so he brusquely walked away from Natalie and set off to see what he could make happen.
Following some awkward small talk about Stella’s failed attempt at another go with Clay (back when he was just starting out with Rebecca), she observed that he wasn’t spinning up with the others. He explained in no detail that he had been suspended from operating, and Stella gave him the pep talk he really needed.
Back at command, Davis laid out the intel on where Ray might be and who might have him, and then, since Bravo isn’t approved to operate, each team member was assigned to Alpha, Charlie or Foxtrot. Jason meanwhile stormed into Lindell’s office, insisting that 1) Bravo regroup for this rescue mission, 2) led by him and C) with Clay on the team. Lindell gave the OK on the first two, but was iffy on the third — until Jason pressed a bit harder, and soon enough the reconstituted Bravo Team was spinning up with the others. Jason, though, made clear to Sonny that this was a one-off for him, and that when it comes to leading Bravo, maybe Sonny should step up sometime.
Once in Tunisia, Jason strongly questioned a plan to breach one location before the second, saying it’d be wiser to hit them both at the same time. Bravo thus took the second possible location, even though it meant having no sat cover. Alas, they were spotted as they drove toward the building, and a firefight soon ensued, with the baddies having the higher ground/advantage shooting from the windows. Ray, meanwhile, was indeed inside the second location, and once he saw everyone start to scramble, he wrenched himself free from the wall he’d been shackled to.
But just as Bravo turned the tables and seized an opportunity to breach, a fleeing Ray was clotheslined in a hallway, bagged, and dragged to an SUV parked outside. As such, Bravo found no one inside the building — though later Davis produced video from a found cell phone that showed Ray had been there, and they just missed him. And now, with his captors poised to trade the valuable Westerner to the highest bidder, there was no knowing where and with whom Ray would end up….
What did you think of the fall finale, “Shockwave”? And how awesome was it to see Stella back? (Rebecca who?) SEAL Team returns Wednesday, Jan. 13.
