https://media.wired.com/photos/6317799f3dfe1372fb6111c2/master/pass/Teachers-On-Tik-Tok-Culture-1320972602.jpg
As simple as it sounds, telling your teacher thank you at the end of class is something that they’ll take to heart. This lets them know that you see and understand the hard work they put into making sure you learn.
Believe it or not, a handwritten note will likely be something your teacher will treasure for years to come. It doesn’t need to be long, but it does need to be from the heart. Whether your teacher helped you through a hard time, stayed late to help you understand a concept, or celebrated an achievement and made you feel like a rock star in the classroom, let them know why they’re so great at their job.
It’s not about the price of the gift- it’s about the thought behind it. When you choose to spend your money on a gift for your teacher, they’ll be touched that you took the time to think about them. If you want to go big, get your class together and ask others to chip in a few bucks so that you can surprise your teacher together. They’ll be overjoyed that you chose to honor them as a group.
You know that moment in class when everything clicks, and you finally understand the concept? Share that moment with your teacher! Saying something like, “thanks – I get it now!” or, “now it makes sense!” are great ways to let your teacher know they’re doing a stellar job.
Many schools and school districts have teacher of the year awards to honor the teachers who go above and beyond in the classroom. If you have a teacher who is deserving of being honored, be sure to nominate them for the award. If you know other students feel the same way about the teacher, encourage them to nominate the teacher as well. While the award is a great surprise, simply knowing that students thought enough to give them a nomination will have your teacher flying high until the end of the year.
You may notice that sometimes other students in the class don’t give your teacher the respect they deserve. As a student, you have the power to tell other students to stop disrespectful behavior. Your message will be received differently than a message from your teacher. Stepping up and being a leader in the classroom (both by example and by speaking up when someone is acting out) helps your teacher to know that they aren’t alone in getting your class to the next academic level.
You appreciate your teacher – don’t forget to let them know. While you know how much your teacher means to you, many teachers go months – or even years – without hearing a kind thank you from a student. When you take the time to let your teacher know that they’ve made a difference in your life, you’ll give them the motivation they need to keep going, even on the toughest days in the classroom.
]]>We’re pleased to present this excerpt from the book’s first chapter.
From “Wilmington, North Carolina – 2013”
My students turned in drawings of animals with extraordinary life spans.
I learned that there were species of tube worm that lived for up to one hundred and seventy years.
Arctic whales more than two hundred years old.
Clams with a life expectancy of four hundred.
Sponges that had been alive for more than a millennium.
A kind of jellyfish—the immortal jellyfish—that, after reaching sexual maturity, could revert to infancy again and again, maybe forever.
“Really?” I said, holding up Lucy’s drawing.
Lucy nodded proudly. She was a sophomore psych major. Her jellyfish wore a cape. A dialogue bubble above its head stated: I am immortal and a jellyfish.
I hung Lucy’s picture on the whiteboard next to Ravi’s arctic whale, which had a horn and a side-profile smile. Ricky’s tube worm was a bright red plume with the caption The tube worm is a vagina-like creature that can grow to be up to six feet tall. It is a deep-sea invertebrate whose only predators are accidental ones—mainly large mammals trying to have sex with it.
Kayla’s drawing was not a drawing but rather a full page of double-spaced text explaining why there shouldn’t be drawing assignments in a college creative-writing class. (Drawing animals is not creative writing any more than pottery is accounting.) She sat in the front row and glared at me. She had the posture of someone who spent her childhood balancing books on her head. She was almost certainly the treasurer of a sorority. I hung her essay next to all the animal pictures.
My department chair, Norman, invited me to his office. Norman was a squirrelly man who always appeared to be bracing for a punch. He was from a leafy college town in the Northeast and looked out of place in Wilmington, a waterfront tourist strip that happened to have a university. He had hired me the previous summer after a string of maternity and rehab leaves of absence had left the department in need of temporary faculty who could be trusted to stay childless and sober. I wasn’t sure why, out of the pack of graduating MFA teaching assistants, he had picked me, but maybe one of my professors had gotten the wrong idea about me and put in a good word.
“Look, Jonas, I’m not trying to be the administrator here,” Norman said. “But a student complained.”
This student had felt uncomfortable with last week’s homework assignment: attend a stranger’s funeral.
“Frankly,” Norman said, “I don’t know if I can blame her.”
This student was Kayla.
Norman waited for me to say something, but my mind was too foggy to find a good explanation.
“No more funerals,” I agreed.
Back in my office, I typed up a more traditional assignment: Write a story.
My mind was always foggy lately. At age twenty-seven, it was my first semester sober, and without four doses of oxycodone a day, a couple tramadol in the mornings, a few methadone now and then, and a weekend bump of heroin to take the edge off, I’d been having trouble finding my words. Sometimes when I was standing in front of the class and one of the kids asked a good question, my brain would start firing off ideas, and it was like I was alive again. I’d explain the relationship between dialogue and narration in fiction, do an impromptu performance of how a scene from a popular movie would sound if a narrator were commenting on each piece of dialogue, and feeling my energy rising with the sound of their laughter, I’d circle back to answer the original question by describing the moment in their assigned reading when . . . when . . . when . . . but the words would scurry into the fog again and I’d be left um-ing and uh-ing like an idiot.
Monday morning the students slumped through the door. They’d spent almost every Monday since they were five years old in a room like this. It took its toll—so often being somewhere other than where you wanted to be. When I used to get high, places were interchangeable. Everywhere was the best place ever—and then the worst. But now place mattered very much. There were few places I liked more than this classroom, with the cheap blinds over the windows, the long fluorescent light tubes overhead, and the students who, even though I often told them what to do, didn’t seem to hate me.
Except for Kayla. Her dislike troubled me.
I stood at the front of the class. I was wearing jeans and a navy cardigan that had been a gift from my ex. I had been growing my hair long since a methadone nightmare the year before had given me a fear of balding. The hair now reached down past my ears. It was strong and brown and shiny and probably the best thing I had going for me.
I held up a stack of student stories. “This was concerning.” I paused. “You killed all your protagonists.”
The students laughed nervously. Kayla maintained eye contact from her spot in the front row.
“I’ll admit that this may be my fault. I probably shouldn’t have sent you to the funeral. That’s on me. I was trying something new.” I paused. “But here’s the thing: Life is long and usually ends in death. Stories are short and usually don’t. Characters can have problems without having cancer, and suicide doesn’t always have to be the solution.” I looked out at the students, hoping to see a reaction, which was a stupid thing to do, since, even when the students were in the middle of life-changing moments—when they realized that all experience was subjective or that they didn’t have to major in business administration—they almost never visibly reacted. But today, seeing no reaction, I panicked. I took a sip of water and gathered myself. “Please stop killing your characters. It’s bumming me out.”

Amber Michelle Parker, a 37-year-old reading teacher at Mexia Independent School District, was arrested on Wednesday in a joint operation led by Freestone County and McLennan County Sheriff Offices.
Detectives had been on Parker’s trail for months before taking her into custody on charges of trafficking and a conspiracy to traffic a minor. Police searched Parker’s electronic devices and her phone.

US gets into 10 most dangerous countries for women due to #metoo – survey
The investigators allege that the woman, who was teaching 8th graders, was busy negotiating a price to sell her teenage relative to a group of men in Morocco when free from her school duties. In a bid to hike up a price tag for the girl, Parker advertised her “merchandise” as a virgin, posting explicit photos of the girl in lingerie online.
The parties were apparently finalizing the terms of the deal when police finally placed Parker in handcuffs.
The woman took the trouble to travel to Morocco right before Christmas and returned on January 1, with officers already waiting for her.
The sick plot was foiled after relatives of the girl sounded the alarm over Parker’s persistent attempts to take the girl to Morocco.
“Family members got wind that Parker was going to try to lure this girl to Morocco,” McClennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara said, as cited by Waco Tribune, calling the incident “a dastardly story, trafficking at its worst.”
“It’s a very low-down thing, it’s the worst of the worst when you prostitute your own relative,” the sheriff said.
It is unclear in what relation the woman was to the girl. While she was allegedly thrashing out the details of the sale in Morocco, the girl was staying with her father out of state.
On her school profile, Parker wrote that she is married with a “beautiful daughter, Naomie,” a senior at the same school.
After the news of her arrest made headlines in Mexia, a small Texan town of some 7,500 residents, Parker was placed on administrative leave, with the school citing concerns for student safety.
School district Superintendent Lyle DuBus said that the administration takes allegations against the disgraced teacher “very seriously” and would be working closely with police.
Parker is currently held on a $ 25,000 bond in a county jail.

When Chelsea Libitzki was 4 years old, she picked up her first pair of ballet slippers in her mom’s dance studio, the Libitzki School of Dance, in the small town of Ellsworth, Maine. “Dancing has always played a huge part in my life,” Chelsea says. “It’s always been an escape … something that I can focus on instead of daily life.”
Chelsea was just one in a family of Libitzki dancers — she grew up dancing alongside her two sisters, and admiring her mother and aunt as they taught beside each other. Chelsea began teaching as an assistant at the studio when she was in seventh grade, and continued to pirouette her way through high school.
But on her 22nd birthday, everything changed. “I was hanging out with friends that night, and things got out of hand. My designated driver situation had changed, and we hit a tree and telephone pole.” The 22-year-old broke her C4 vertebra, which is a spinal cord injury that means different things in different situations. For Chelsea, it meant that she was paralyzed from the chest down.
Every spinal cord injury is different, so people didn’t really know.
Chelsea Libitzki
“When I first got hurt, I felt like my doctors didn’t necessarily tell me what my future was going to look like. Every spinal cord injury is different, so people didn’t really know,” Chelsea explains. But she had one nurse who was more matter-of-fact, telling her she’d never walk again. “At that moment, my heart totally sank.”
After one week in the intensive care unit and six weeks at Eastern Maine Medical Center, in Bangor, Chelsea spent three and a half months in Atlanta at Shepherd Center, learning about what her life would be like. “‘The new normal’ is what they told me,” she says, noting how she had to relearn how to live her life.
“I had been a certain way up until that point, and within a matter of seconds, my life completely changed,” Chelsea says. “I remember thinking, ‘OK, this is what your life is going to be like now. You can either choose to move forward and figure out what it is you’re meant to do, or you could be miserable and stay in bed all day.’”
Frustrated at first by the thought of never dancing again, Chelsea gradually learned how dance could remain very much a part of her world. She now teaches alongside her mother, sister and aunt at her mother’s dance studio. If she needs help, she’s able to ask someone to demonstrate for her, but it’s Chelsea who’s in charge of teaching the Vaganova syllabus, including the building blocks of ballet.
These moves don’t necessarily require being demonstrated, which makes it possible for Chelsea to teach ballet through her knowledge and experience. “I think that by having me as a dance teacher, [students] are also learning a valuable lesson. People can do whatever they put their mind to, and things aren’t always what they seem.”

One US high school student’s red ‘Make America Great Again’ hat triggered his teacher into calling the kid an “a**hole” and evacuating the classroom.
In a video filmed by his classmate, the kid’s teacher gives him a telling off for the hat, saying that other students are “provoked by the presence” of it.
“If you’re scared of a hat, that’s no different than being scared of the dark in a basement,” the high schooler shoots back, slouching in his chair.
“Take your hat off or get out,” the teacher demands. “I’m either going to gather everybody up and go to another classroom, and you can remain here like an a**hole, or you can take your hat off.”
“I can’t sit here and learn?” the student asks. “What about freedom of expression?”
“I don’t care,” the triggered teacher responds, before evacuating the entire class into another room. Earlier in the video the teacher explains that he normally makes exceptions to the school’s ‘no hats’ policy, but would not this time.

Man who attacked teen over MAGA hat arrested for theft
The rebellious Republican isn’t the only high schooler to catch stick for wearing a MAGA hat, and a series of incidents show the hat can be a hazardous wardrobe choice. A high school senior in California was arrested in August for grabbing a classmate’s MAGA hat, then slapping her teacher as he escorted her out of the classroom.
The hat, she said, was a “racist and hateful symbol,” and her tirade against its owner a “political statement.”

This educator-turned-mediator looks anything but imposing. But she cracks hard ground digging for peace in a nine-year civil war that has killed 20,000 people. So how can a woman speak to a sect that keeps women silent and slaughters them for not wearing veils?
In this war-ravaged part of the country, the answers are retold with a personal bent and remixed city to city. “If that woman is not a member of Boko Haram, they would have finished her,” a friend in the northern city of Maiduguri, Ahmed Abubakar, tells me. “But if she is not one of them, then she must be a powerful witch using a mysterious power to make them impotent.”
On a recent overcast morning, Allamin, who left public service in 2016 after more than 30 years as an educator, reveals how she might have charmed Boko Haram. Not with witchcraft, but with infectious smiles and a love for listening — all squeezed into a carefree courage that can be disarming even for the deadliest sect in the world.
It is always important to spare a peacemaker in every violence.
Justice Nwafor, Nigeria-based analyst
After all, Allamin is a daughter of their soil, from an elite Kanuri family, the same tribe from which Boko Haram emerged. She knows the insurgents and their parents, who were her schoolmates, and she’s proven herself to the insurgents as a good and useful mediator. Working with her husband, a local chief in Konduga, she has resolved complex local disputes, including intervening to prevent the traditional practice of girls marrying under age 18.
Before the war escalated in 2013, Boko Haram insurgents lived in the communities — turning homes into hiding places after launching attacks on military units. “If you report them, you and your family would be the next target,” says Allamin. But the destructive cycle around her forced her to act. After hit-and-run attacks in Maiduguri, the military would invade the communities, searching for perpetrators and arresting every youth in sight, including the innocent. Houses often were razed.
So Allamin started reporting perpetrators to the military, talking to the insurgents about peace and sometimes confronting the insurgents who “brandish their cutlasses” in threat. “Gradually, even Boko Haram understood I was harmless, and they started opening up to me,” she says. As Nigeria-based analyst Justice Nwafor points out: “It is always important to spare a peacemaker in every violence.”
It’s not as if Allamin is taking the insurgents’ side. She helped organize the global “Bring Back Our Girls” campaign — garnering attention from then–first lady Michelle Obama — after Boko Haram abducted more than 200 schoolgirls in 2014. And she’s led the fight to empower women who have escaped their reign of terror. Allamin now tends to more than 30 former so-called wives of Boko Haram from displaced persons camps. She creates a small social network for them, with plans to send the younger ones to school and train the older ones in a trade — though some are pregnant with the offspring of the insurgents.

Still, Nwafor says Boko Haram appears to value Allamin’s skills more than the government. Allamin organized a peace meeting between the Nigerian government and Boko Haram in 2015. The deal failed because of the government’s “lack of interest in peace,” she claims. The government, as is the case on many Boko Haram–related topics, doesn’t comment on Allamin’s efforts.
Peace talks have sputtered on in the years since, and the horrors continue. “Life under Boko Haram is bitter, and women were not allowed to talk or come out of their homes,” says Fatima Umaru, a refugee whose community, Bama, was under Boko Haram rule for eight months before the military recaptured the town in 2015. But military rule comes with its own set of problems. Amnesty International reports that military officers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force in the northeast have raped and sexually exploited women and girls, often in exchange for food and other necessities.
Families across the region have been shattered by indefinite military detentions. Allamin brought together 1,600 women and girls in what she called the Knifar Movement to increase pressure on officials to release their husbands and fathers, while also pursuing justice against soldiers and others accused of rape.
She’s also staying active in her field of education. Boko Haram roughly translates to “Secular education is a sin.” Allamin wants to brand her initiative “Boko Halal,” or “Education is good.” With donations from philanthropists and international organizations, she’s schooling close to 100 former child soldiers — frequently used in Boko Haram suicide attacks — who escaped or were rescued by the military, teaching them vocational skills.
Short of brokering an unlikely peace, her diplomacy and good works can only make a small dent. According to United Nations data, some 7.7 million people — half of whom are children — in northeastern Nigeria need humanitarian assistance.
While Allamin, a grandmother of 16, has been lavished with international awards for peace, she has no plans to capitalize on her fame with a book. Instead, she keeps her reflections for posterity in The Maiduguri Diary, a grim recounting of the conflict that would fit in the horror section (as well as history) of any library. Many plagues are inscribed in the pages, from rape to starvation, all prefaced by resignation.
Her most tangible legacy could come in her Maiduguri community, where 74 families already have named their kids after her in appreciation. “We want to make her immortal,” says Mallam Musa Mohammed, who has worked for Allamin for several years. “She is an icon of peace.”

A science teacher in Idaho, who fed a sick puppy to a turtle in front of his students, has been accused of animal cruelty and faces a possible six-month prison sentence, as well as a fine of $ 5,000, if found guilty of misdemeanor.
Robert Crosland of Preston Junior High School was charged on Friday, after an investigation by the Idaho attorney general’s office. The school authorities said they’re waiting for the verdict of the judges to decide on the teacher’s future.
In early March, Crosland gathered a small group of students for a science ‘experiment’ after classes, during which he fed a sick puppy to a huge snapping turtle in front of them. The incident caused a huge public outcry and a petition, which labeled the teacher’s actions “disgusting” and urged him to be fired, was launched online and quickly gathered the goal of 190,000 signatures.
The school insisted that the experiment was “not a part of any school-directed program”, while the turtle was seized by the Idaho State Department of Agriculture and “humanely euthanized,” as it is viewed as an invasive species by state authorities.
PETA’s senior director of cruelty casework, Stephanie Bell, blasted the teacher, saying that “any youngster who witnessed cruelty in the classroom is now in desperate need of lessons about having empathy for other living beings.”
Former students told the East Idaho News that Crosland previously fed guinea pigs to snakes and snapping turtles during classes. However, his former wards defended their teacher, with one of them insisting that “he really brought science to life. I loved his class because he had turtles and snakes and other cool things.”
The mother of two of Crosland’s current students, Farahlyn Hansen, told the Preston Citizen that her kids were “very upset about the way Robert is being portrayed in the news.”
“The puppy was dying. I felt like it was the more humane thing for Robert to do than to just leave it… He’s spent his whole life showing kids how to care for and feed animals,” Hansen said.
The news of Crosland being charged was welcomed by many animal lovers online, who demanded the strictest punishment for the science teacher. It’s not clear if Crosland is still teaching classes in Preston, but an anonymous employee was put on administrative leave by the local board of education on 21 March.
“We hope that any errors in judgement made by a teacher in this instance will not cause us to forget the years of care, effort, and passion the teacher has given to students in Preston School District,” Marc Gee, superintendent for the local school district, said.
