The introduction of the rapid lateral flow testing system is part of the Government’s efforts to reopen the economy in time for the summer.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to confirm whether the current infection rate is low enough to allow pubs with gardens to open to customers.

Health Minister Edward Argar said he expects Britons returning to work in the coming weeks to be among the first to access the lateral flow tests on offer.

Mr Argar told the BBC on Monday: “I suspect in the first instance, a lot of them will be used by people who are starting to go back into their workplace again, as the economy starts opening up again, as pubs start opening for outside drinks and shops start opening again and as people start going back to their offices and businesses.

People will be able to obtain a test through a home ordering service, workplace or school testing programme, or by collecting one at a local test site.

Mr Johnson said the scheme would help stop fresh outbreaks, enabling the authorities to identify and control new variants of the disease.

Under the Government’s road map, pubs and restaurants will be able to start serving customers outdoors from next week while hairdressers, nail salons, gyms and libraries – as well as non-essential retail – will be able to reopen.

While there is relief among MPs at the prospect of the economy reopening, there is concern among some about the proposals for the “Covid status certification” scheme dubbed “vaccine passports”.

He told RT that there’s a tiny group of the world’s elite professionals, banks, law firms, and accounting firms that make a nice living from the global tax haven industry. Multinational companies, and their shareholders to some extent, have benefitted from the fact that they were able to park US profits offshore and avoid paying US corporate income tax.

“The rest of us who have to pay for the taxes that corporations are not paying, are seeing the race to the bottom, we’re seeing many countries around the world slashing corporate taxes and putting more of the costs of the government on ordinary taxpayers,” said Henry, a senior advisor at the Tax Justice Network.

He explained that America’s wealthy kleptocrats, tax-dodgers, and particularly multinational companies have been massively parking money offshore. By 2017, US multinationals have “accumulated about $ 2.6 trillion offshore while they didn’t have to pay the 35 percent US corporate tax,” the economist said.

Henry points out that the Trump administration has slashed that tax to about 15 percent and now they have eight years to pay it while not even being required to repatriate the money hoarded offshore.

“The new tax bill was a disaster but it did benefit the major companies by allowing them to get their $ 2.6 trillion back home tax free,” Henry said.

The senior fellow at Yale noted that bringing the tax rate back to less than five percent from the current fifteen, would mean “a $ 600 – 800 billion gift to the wealthiest companies on the planet.” Ninety percent of corporate shares are owned by the top one percent, he said.

Tax havens are used as an instrument to increase the role of profitability of the US multinationals and the oil companies all use tax havens aggressively to reduce taxation, according to Henry.

In general, since the financial crisis the world has increased its debt levels to an unprecedented proportion. So, the countries tended to borrow to fill the gap. “It would go a long way over time toward chipping away from the massive debt burden that we have.”

The US has actually become a safe haven of its own, Henry said, adding that there’s no beneficial ownership reporting, no country by country reporting. “The US has some of the most aggressive enablers on the planet – accounting firms and law firms that are enabling this activity. A lot of multinationals that have been exploiting the tax haven system are US companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft.”

While historically the US has always been a proponent of a progressive taxation lately that’s been lagging, he stressed.

A stitch in time

TAX collection in Africa resembles an exasperating fishing expedition, in which the big fish wriggle into tax havens and the tiddlers hide in the informal sector. It is made even harder by a self-inflicted problem. Governments give out a range of exemptions, thereby poking holes in their own nets.

Consider “tax expenditures”, a measure of the revenue lost by deviations from usual tax rates. Taxmen in Kenya and Uganda let about 5% of GDP slip through their fingers in this way, according to the World Bank. In the few African countries where data are available, governments forgo revenues worth a third of those they actually collect. The cost is felt in crowded classrooms and on rutted roads.

With fewer than two months before tax returns are due, the FBI is warning of an increase in new scams that try to trick taxpayers and employers into sending employee records, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, and other sensitive information.

The scams are most often directed at human resources departments in an attempt to trick workers into sending records for large numbers of employees. Often, the people perpetrating these crimes impersonate executives inside a targeted company by compromising or spoofing a trusted email account that asks for all W-2 information on record.

“Individual taxpayers may also be… targeted, but criminals have evolved their tactics to focus on mass data thefts,” FBI officials wrote in an advisory published Wednesday. “This scam is just one of several new variations of IRS and tax-related phishing campaigns targeting W-2 information, indicating an increase in the interest of criminals in sensitive tax information.”

  • First lady Melania Trump’s flights during a three-month period in early 2017 cost more $ 676,000 dollars. These flights took place while Melania lived with her son Barron at Trump Tower in New York City before moving into the White House in June.
  • The cost of these flights, which were conducted by the Air Force, cost about twice as much as former first lady Michelle Obama’s annual private travel costs.
  • On top of these flight expenses, Melania’s security detail at Trump Tower cost between $ 127,000 and $ 146,000 a day.

During the three months in which first lady Melania Trump lived in New York City with her son Barron before moving into the White House with her husband, she took a total of 21 flights aboard Air Force jets at a total cost of $ 676,635, according to a military records request from The Wall Street Journal.

The first lady had decided to remain in Trump Tower in New York in order to take care of Barron while he finished the fifth grade, and only moved to Washington, DC in early June, after over four months living away from President Donald Trump.

Although the records request only covers three months of this period, Melania still racked up quite a tab, taking flights between New York, Washington, DC, and Palm Beach, Florida, where she would fly to spend downtime in Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club.

While Melania was personally aboard only 21 flights between January and April, another 27 were taken by the Air Force in order to transport flight crews to and from her boarding destinations. The Air Force flights she took were based out of Joint Base Andrews, near Washington, DC, and had to fly back each time they transported the first lady anywhere on the eastern seaboard.

While none of these flights have been alleged to be improper, former first lady Michelle Obama spent on average $ 350,000 per year, according to The Journal — or about half of Melania’s costs during the three month period in 2017 alone. 

Aside from flights, security at Trump Tower cost the New York Police Department between $ 127,000 and $ 146,000 a day while Melania and Barron were staying there, and the Secret Service requested an additional $ 60 million to protect the president’s family.

  • New records show that President Donald Trump’s known political and leisure travel costs now total to over $ 13 million.
  • Several flights he took in the latter half of 2017 alone amounted over $ 3 million.
  • He is on track to outpace former President Barack Obama in terms of the travel costs accrued per year.

Newly released records show that President Donald Trump’s flights to his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey cost taxpayers $ 15,994 per hour, and his recent flights have racked up a total of over $ 3 million dollars — and that’s not even taking into account trips he made in the first six months of his presidency.

According to records obtained by Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog group, the domestic flights that Trump took in the second half of 2017 alone cost taxpayers a total of $ 3,199,188.30. Trump took these trips either by himself or with members of his family, flying to Bedminister, New Jersey; New York City; Yuma, Arizona; Springfield, Missouri; and Huntsville, Alabama between June and October 2017.

A previous record disclosure from Judicial Watch revealed that two trips Trump took to Mar-a-Lago in Florida in April 2017 cost a combined total of $ 1,124,802.

Added to previously available flight expenses, the total for all of Trump’s political and leisure travel now sits at $ 13,533,937.28. 

Compared to the travel expenses of former President Barack Obama and his family that totaled $ 114,691,322.17, Trump still lags far behind in his totals. But considering that Obama’s travels every fiscal year from 2015 to 2017 amounted to just around $ 1 million, Trump is on track to far outpace his predecessor.

Since his inauguration, taxpayers have paid almost $ 50 million in total for Trump’s 91 golf trips so far.

People caught in possession of cannabis and detained for more than half a day are costing British taxpayers an eye-watering £13.5 million, it has emerged. Some 30,000 such cases were recorded in the past five years.

The figures were revealed in response to a freedom of information request by Liberal Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable. The Metropolitan Police revealed it costs an average of £449 to keep a person in custody for 12 hours. That pays for costs, including meals and staff wages.

But as only 26 of 45 police forces responded to Cable’s enquiry, both the number of cases and the costs incurred is likely to be much higher.

The data also revealed that in 2016 alone there were 6,000 cases of detention for more than half a day for possession of cannabis.

Possession of cannabis can carry a punishment of up to five years in jail, an unlimited fine, or both. Producing and supplying the drug, on the other hand, could mean up to 14 years in prison and an unlimited fine.

The Liberal Democrats have long called for drug policy reforms and cannabis to be legalized in a bid to tackle overcrowding in prisons across the UK.

Ahead of the general election in June, the party branded the Tory government’s war on drugs a “catastrophic failure,” saying the billions of pounds earned from cannabis currently profiting organized crime could instead be flowing to the Treasury. Its manifesto claimed the legalization of cannabis could raise £1 billion in tax revenues.

Despite the Lib Dems attempt to legalize the drug, Prime Minister Theresa May’s vow to carry on with her war on drugs leaves little hope for the centrist party’s appeal.

The Home Office said: “There is a substantial body of scientific and medical evidence to show that cannabis is a harmful drug that can damage people’s mental and physical health.

“It is a Class B drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and this government has no plans to decriminalise it. It is an operational decision for chief officers and police and crime commissioners to determine how forces use their resources.”
