On the label: “Pink Marshmallow Moonshine.” Made with a base of sweet potatoes, no less. I was intrigued.

Flavored spirits — think vanilla vodka and ginger gins — might be yawn-inducingly common nowadays, and even knocking up booze from sweet potatoes is nothing new. After all, “the Japanese have been making imojochu [sweet potato shochu] for ages,” says Rebecca DeVaney, sommelier and spirits specialist based in Phoenix. But turning sweet potatoes into moonshine — no longer a mere relic of Prohibition-era America — and serving it up with flavors like Chocolate Chili? Only the U.K.–based Sweet Potato Spirit Company is doing that.

Smith’s personal sweet potato, orange and ginger soup recipe eventually inspired the Orangecello, one of the company’s flavored gin liqueurs.

Reminiscent of candied yams, the tooth-tingling Pink Marshmallow Moonshine is like Thanksgiving in a bottle. And the Toffee Apple Moonshine, which tastes like bonfires and blanket scarves, evokes autumnal childhood memories — albeit in a 22 percent proof. It’s the “real toffee” that makes it so sweet, head hooch honcho Garry Smith tells me over the phone. And while the company claims to use all-natural flavorings (rather than artificial, “insipid, almost sickly” sweet ones, he notes), the jury’s still out on how they managed to so accurately replicate the essence of two supersweet treats.

And a tasting note: The sweetness does not come from the sweet potatoes themselves — it’s all from the flavoring, which also allows the spirits to hold their own with mixers such as coconut water, Smith adds. However, the chocolate and chili combo fell flat for me — chocolate flavors really need a creamier base than a clear moonshine.

Smith says the idea came about thanks to a light-bulb-moment conversation with a waitress who asked whether making booze with sweet potatoes was even possible. He’d been in the sweet potato import and export business for years, trying to encourage consumers to experiment with the orange root vegetable beyond the ol’ Hobbit-esque approach of boil ’em, mash ’em, stick ’em in a stew — including his own foray into making sweet potato chips.

Spirits from the Sweet Potato Spirit Company

The first distillation attempts “didn’t work,” Smith explains — sweet potatoes aren’t actually potatoes, so the established potato-based methodology needed some tweaking — but in 2015, the Sweet Potato Spirit Co. became the first U.K. company to small-batch distill sweet potato drinks in copper stills. Things came far more organically with the flavors. For example, Smith’s personal sweet potato, orange and ginger soup recipe eventually inspired the Orangecello, one of the company’s flavored-gin liqueurs. In addition to the moonshine lineup (one plain, three flavored), the Sweet Potato Spirit Co. also produces flavored gins, fruity liqueurs, spiced rum and a vodka — all from sweet potatoes.

The bad news? Even with all that fruit and veg content, these spirits won’t help you hit your five-a-day targets, DeVaney tells me, before noting that actually, “everything in their product lineup is technically a flavored vodka.” (For what it’s worth, Smith refutes this assertion, noting that “vodka at first distillation has to come off the still at 96 percent ABV to be defined as a vodka,” a process the Sweet Potato Spirit Co. only adheres to when making, naturally, their vodka.)

But hey, who’s sipping a moonshine for the health benefits?

Sweet Potato Spirit Co. spirits are only available and shipped in the U.K. A 50cl bottle costs between £20 and £30.

Peugeot Looks to Opel in a Bid to Appeal to American Tastes https://briefnews.eu/peugeot-looks-to-opel-in-a-bid-to-appeal-to-american-tastes/ https://briefnews.eu/peugeot-looks-to-opel-in-a-bid-to-appeal-to-american-tastes/#respond Fri, 19 Jan 2018 15:35:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/peugeot-looks-to-opel-in-a-bid-to-appeal-to-american-tastes/ Peugeot Instinct Concept

While it’s no secret that the PSA Group is looking to make a return to our shores, the French automaker dropped an interesting little nugget at the Detroit auto show regarding Peugeot Citroën’s return to the States—namely, the role its recent acquisition of General Motors Europe’s Opel brand plays in the plan.

–

Speaking at the Automotive News World Congress, PSA Group chairman Carlos Tavares said that the company has “people working on cars now” for the U.S.  market and that Opel engineers can “ensure the future products for this market will be fully U.S. compliant,” aligned with both regulations and our market’s particular tastes, reports Reuters.

–

PSA had already planned to re-enter the fray in the U.S. market via ride sharing—which it’s currently exploring with its Free2Move app—and once Peugeot vehicles have taken hold in that role, they’ll be offered to the general public for sale. Opel’s contribution can be fully implemented on that slow and steady timeline.

–

Presumably these U.S.-bound cars will feature a measure of electrification, since Tavares also said that by 2025, “the PSA Group will be 100 percent electrified.” The firm’s timeline to reach autonomy is perhaps a bit less aggressive than those of some other automakers, with the chairman claiming that by 2030, 80 percent of the company’s vehicles will have limited self-driving capacity, while 10 percent, according to Tavares, will be capable of autonomous motoring.

–

–

To recap, the brand is essentially banking on Free2Move to smooth the way for its entry into the U.S. market, while putting its faith in the Opel/Vauxhall folks to make sure the new vehicles are in line with Yankee tastes. Which may mean the new conquest-intending Frankish automobiles will remind Americans of nothing less than an evolution of recent Opel-engineered Buicks.

Shake Shack is testing a new chicken sandwich that will soon be available nationwide — here’s how it tastes https://briefnews.eu/shake-shack-is-testing-a-new-chicken-sandwich-that-will-soon-be-available-nationwide-heres-how-it-tastes/ https://briefnews.eu/shake-shack-is-testing-a-new-chicken-sandwich-that-will-soon-be-available-nationwide-heres-how-it-tastes/#respond Sun, 14 Jan 2018 14:33:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/shake-shack-is-testing-a-new-chicken-sandwich-that-will-soon-be-available-nationwide-heres-how-it-tastes/ Shake Shack Chicken Club SandwichHollis Johnson/Business Insider

  • Shake Shack‘s new grilled chicken club sandwich is being tested in Brooklyn, New York locations.
  • It’ll be available nationwide for a limited time starting January 26.
  • The sandwich is decent, but the chicken itself leaves something to be desired.

Shake Shack is testing a new grilled chicken sandwich at its locations in Brooklyn, New York.

The “Griddled Chick’n Club” is a decidedly healthy item for a chain that serves cheese fries, hot dogs, and double cheeseburgers. Of course, this isn’t the first chicken item on their menu — that honor goes to the deliciously crispy and near-perfect Chick’n Shack fried-chicken sandwich.

The sandwich will be rolled out nationally, excluding airport and stadium locations, for a limited time starting January 26. But is it as good as the rest of the chain’s chicken? We grabbed one to find out.

Right off the bat, the smell is intoxicating. The smoky aroma of bacon dominates the senses — always a good thing.

Hollis Johnson/Business Insider

The sandwich follows Shake Shack tradition and is embraced by the chain’s dense, ever-so-lightly sweet, potato bun. It’s a rare bun that goes with nearly any sandwich, and this bun is one of them. It’s even good with Shake Shack’s breakfast sandwiches.

Hollis Johnson/Business Insider

Let’s look at the mechanics. It’s a simply constructed sandwich — a club is a club is a club, and simplicity is a good thing here. The tomatoes are firm and vibrant, which is no surprise given Shake Shack’s creed of quality ingredients and sourcing.

Chicago: Sample the sights, sounds and tastes on a gourmet trip to the fabulous U.S city https://briefnews.eu/chicago-sample-the-sights-sounds-and-tastes-on-a-gourmet-trip-to-the-fabulous-u-s-city/ https://briefnews.eu/chicago-sample-the-sights-sounds-and-tastes-on-a-gourmet-trip-to-the-fabulous-u-s-city/#respond Sun, 17 Dec 2017 02:37:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chicago-sample-the-sights-sounds-and-tastes-on-a-gourmet-trip-to-the-fabulous-u-s-city/

Throw in visits to some of the city’s best restaurants and our taste buds were tingling.

We flew from Heathrow with British Airways and, although the plane could do with an upgrade, we were really impressed with the cabin crew service, allowing us plenty of time to relax.

On arrival in Chicago we headed for the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel, where we were wowed by the curved balconies that make it look like the exterior is rippling in the wind.

The interior is just as impressive, with huge modern rooms and beds so big you need a map to find your way out of them.

Its third-floor pool and gardens, complete with a 360-degree running track, offer great views and its Italian-themed Filini restaurant is as stylish as the clientele.

Heading out on our first night, we were jolted out of our jetlag by a couple of drinks at the lively bars on the Chicago riverfront, then dinner at the brilliantly named Duck Duck Goat, a Chinese restaurant in the up-and-coming Fulton Market area.

Delicious dishes such as beef and broccoli and grilled shrimp were served in generous portions and even early on a midweek night the place was really buzzing.

We’d been to Chicago before but the Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise is always a must-do, so the next morning we boarded the First Lady for a narrated tour that serves as a refresher about the city’s history and impressive skyscrapers.

After that it was lunch at the Gold Coast branch of Lou Malnati’s, Chicago’s legendary pizza chain where the signature deep dish creation is as hearty as the chocolate chip cookie dessert.

The food festival wasn’t for another two days so that gave us plenty of time to take advantage of the CityPASS vouchers, fast-tracking us into attractions like the world-class Art Institute of Chicago and to the top of the Skydeck Chicago (famed for its pop-out glass booths that are a no-no for someone like myself who is scared of heights).

The pass also included entry to 360 Chicago, which has the better views and is in the Magnificent Mile shopping district, so you can combine a visit with some retail therapy.

As impressive in its architecture as New York but roomier and more relaxed, Chicago is a very walkable city, but it’s fun to hop a ride on an “L” train (the elevated transport system) or the Big Bus Tours hop-on/hop-off service to explore its many diverse neighbourhoods.

The River North area is especially vibrant and it was here we headed to RPM Steak, where the décor is sophisticated, the service impeccable and the dry-aged Kansas City Cut steak is beyond incredible – big enough to share – while the key lime tart is a dessert to die for.

Still full from lunch, we only managed to sample a couple of the many dishes at the Hamburger Hop – Gourmet Chicago’s launch event in the city’s famed Millennium Park.

The next day we were back at the park for the main event and it turned out to be quite something, with more than 60 stalls plying visitors with fine wines, tasting menus and cocktails alongside cooking demonstrations and drinks seminars.

The $ 185 (£137) per day entry fee might sound steep, but everything is included and having the spectacular Chicago skyline as a backdrop makes it a really special event.

There’s only so much fine wining and dining a body can handle so, after a second day at the festival, we were ready for home. We headed to the airport fully satiated, vowing that next time we’ll bring a bigger doggy bag.

Where the Water Tastes Like Wine is a magic realist adventure about storytelling https://briefnews.eu/where-the-water-tastes-like-wine-is-a-magic-realist-adventure-about-storytelling/ https://briefnews.eu/where-the-water-tastes-like-wine-is-a-magic-realist-adventure-about-storytelling/#respond Sat, 07 Oct 2017 17:08:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/where-the-water-tastes-like-wine-is-a-magic-realist-adventure-about-storytelling/

According to tales of the Old West, a whole host of unfortunate souls have been known to make deals with the Devil. And that’s exactly what the nameless protagonist does in Where the Water Tastes Like Wine. It’s been nearly two years since Dim Bulb Games and Serenity Forge released an announcement trailer for their stylish narrative-driven exploration of Americana, and it’s finally getting ready for its debut. It will release in early 2018 for PC and Mac on Steam, and then roll out to consoles later down the line.

Where the Water Tastes Like Wine is an open-world adventure in a magic realist version of the U.S. where nothing is more important than stories and the people who tell them. There’s something incredibly mythic about it right from the start.

When I played a demo at the IndieCade Festival (an annual event that celebrates independent games), the opening scene was cozily familiar: The main character in a seedy saloon, playing hand after hand of poker until all that’s left is a heads-up match against a shadowy stranger. Of course the stranger goes all in and of course I do anything I can to match it — and of course he turns out to be the Devil and now I’m cursed to walk the lands, gathering stories for him.

Creator Johnnemann Nordhagen found inspiration in his own travels. He was one of the co-founders of Fullbright, and after the release of the indie hit Gone Home, he left to found Dim Bulb. In the interim, he also decided to do a bit of wandering.

“After I finished working on my last game, I went traveling a lot,” said Nordhagen in an interview with GamesBeat. “I was traveling all over the world, trying to do that mostly by train and boat. I was avoiding planes, because I like knowing when I’ve traveled somewhere, right? Plane are kind of like teleporting.”

During his voyages, Nordhagen met a lot of folks and exchanged a lot of stories. He incorporated the idea of exploring this kind of nomadic storytelling with his love of bluegrass, jazz, folk, and blues music, and Where the Water Tastes Like Wine emerged.

“I wanted to bring the world you hear about in those songs — selling your soul to the devil at the crossroads, the lonely gambler looking for one last score, that sort of thing,” said Nordhagen. “I wanted to create that world. The era of U.S. history when people were doing a lot of traveling on trains and where a lot of this folklore comes from is the 1930s, the Depression, the hobo heyday, so that’s the time period I chose, and the game grew from there.”

Stories are the basis for everything Where the Water Tastes Like Wine. You have to gather true stories in order to set yourself free from the Devil. You also use stories as currency when you meet other characters around the campfire. The more you tell your stories, the more likely they’ll roll around the country like tumbleweeds, gathering size and legendary feats until they return to you, bigger and bolder and weirder than ever.

“They get embellished as people tell them and add their own little bits to them,” said Nordhagen. “That’s how you level up your collection of tools, by telling [your stories] and watching them grow bigger.”

There are a lot of little bits of strangeness in the game. For instance, you roam a map of the U.S. as a bare skeleton with a rucksack and a jaunty hat. It’s ambiguous, Nordhagen says, if that’s metaphorical or literal. Other people react to you like you’re completely normal and not at all as though you’re a walking, talking, storytelling skeleton. Some of the stories you encounter are odd snippets — like when you find a boy hiding in a bag in the woods. It turns out that his father is leaving home, and the boy is hoping he won’t notice if he hides in his father’s luggage and runs away with him.

Its unique style and the way it deals with narrative have grabbed people’s attention. It’s already garnered some love at festivals like SXSW, where it was a 2017 Gamer’s Voice Award nominee, and it’s a nominee at this year’s IndieCade Festival as well.

And because stories are so central to the game, Dim Bulb has taken care to weave in iconic tall tales as well as invent some of their own.

“The little stories, the little adventures you have, they’re either made up by the writers, or they’re based on American folklore,” said Nordhagen. “You can meet Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill, the Headless Horseman, that kind of thing. But the characters you meet are actually based on American history.”

Speaking of writers, Where the Water Tastes Like Wine has a fantastic roster contributing to its anthology of Americana. It features people like Anne Toole, a video game writer for CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher; Austin Walker, the editor-in-chief of the gaming news site Waypoint; Leigh Alexander, who wrote the upcoming Reigns: Her Majesty from Nerial; Jolie Menzel, a narrative designer and writer for Ubisoft’s South Park: The Fractured But Whole; and more.

The tales in the game aren’t just born from imagination, though. The stories — the true and important ones, as the game reminds us — are inspired by real experiences.

“They’re not based on specific people, but you can meet a coal miner, or a hobo kid who was kicked out of his home during the Great Depression,” said Nordhagen. “You can meet a Navajo woman who was forcibly relocated in the Long Walk. All these different characters come from different aspects of American history that we don’t often talk about or necessarily learn about and school.”

The PC Gaming channel is presented by Intel®‘s Game Dev program.

WATCH Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Zoe Saldana and Mila Kunis have oral sex: 'It tastes good' https://briefnews.eu/watch-guardians-of-the-galaxy-2-zoe-saldana-and-mila-kunis-have-oral-sex-it-tastes-good/ https://briefnews.eu/watch-guardians-of-the-galaxy-2-zoe-saldana-and-mila-kunis-have-oral-sex-it-tastes-good/#respond Mon, 01 May 2017 01:25:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/watch-guardians-of-the-galaxy-2-zoe-saldana-and-mila-kunis-have-oral-sex-it-tastes-good/

The 2007 film showed two college friends exploring their sexuality.

One encounter takes place on the floor of their university library while the other takes place rather more traditionally in a bed in the student dormitory.

The library scene starts out with Kunis asking Saldana how oral sex tastes: “Seriously I wanna know.”

Saldana then points down to her laps and says, “Well, you wanna know…”

Saldana replies: “It tastes good. I like it…”

Kunis keeps pushing and says: “I know you like it. What does it taste like? Is it like chicken? Potatoes? Does it taste like tuna? You know it smells like tuna.”

Saldana then replies: “I guess it’s a little salty.”

Things get evermore graphic when Kunis refers to female genitals as a “moist cavity between your legs.”

But the most shocking part is when Saldana actually uses her fingers to explore Kunis and then licks them afterwards.

The verdict from Saldana? “So f***ing good.”

Another scene shows the actual act of oral sex.

Kunis says: “Well that was nice. I just want to marinate in this for a while.”

She then tries to make sure her friend isn’t developing feelings for her by saying: “You don’t have to hide the fact you’re gay. You can do whatever you want, I just don’t want you falling in love with me. I don’t have patience for that bullsh** from a man or a woman.”

THIS is why coffee on flights always tastes weird https://briefnews.eu/this-is-why-coffee-on-flights-always-tastes-weird/ https://briefnews.eu/this-is-why-coffee-on-flights-always-tastes-weird/#respond Sun, 16 Apr 2017 16:43:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-is-why-coffee-on-flights-always-tastes-weird/

There are three things that impact the taste of your coffee on a slight.

Two of them are to do with the way the coffee is made.

The water is moved about in tanks, meaning the it sits in containers for a long time.

Obviously this long stint in a musty container is not going to make for very fresh water.

Water that isn’t fresh isn’t going to taste great – it’s that simple.

Travel + Leisure also revealed that the altitude will effect the taste of your coffee.

Since you are flying at 35,000ft the water boils at a lower temperate meaning the coffee is not properly extracted.

Lastly, you also change when you are in the air – which affects your taste buds.

Brexit negotiations have begun and with them, myriad questions have sprung up surrounding travel to the EU once Britain has officially left it.

Considering the current passport expiry rules around the world, your passport may be rendered invalid once the formal process of Brexit is complete.

Guidelines for travel within the Schengen Area state that your travel document must be valid for the duration of your stay, but doesn’t need to have any extra validity.

According to the European Commission, even if your British passport is only valid until the day after you return home, you should still be able to travel.
