Appearing on the BBC Breakfast sofa to be interviewed by Dan Walker and Louise Minchin, Long-Bailey spoke on Labour’s plans to put through legislation to stop a no deal Brexit.

But Walker wasn’t satisfied with the answers the politician was giving and expressed how “frustrating” it was to keep hearing “ifs and buts”.

It came as he tried to get to the bottom of Labour’s position on a general election.

Walker probed: “Can I try and get you to nail down your position? A general election for example is called by Boris Johnson before the 31st of October, would you back that?”

Long-Bailey answered: “Well, that’s why we are trying to push forward legislation this week that would avoid us being in a No Deal situation.

“There are two things we want to ensure happen this week, firstly we want to ensure that legislation is passed with the full support of Parliament to stop a No Deal Brexit without parliamentary approval and then secondly we want the government to recognise that and ensure that passes through Parliament.

“Any attempt by the government to stop that would be a constitutional outrage and we would not want to be a position during a general election where we crash out without a deal.

“That’s not to say we don’t support a general election because of course we do. We want to get rid of this Conservative government because of the damage it’s done to my constituency and every single constituency across the UK.”

However, it appeared Walker was not happy with her answer and took Rebecca to task over MPs not providing “straight answers”.

He declared: “I don’t want to sound cruel in saying this and you are one of these MPs that come on this programme a lot, you are always ready to answer questions but can you see how it’s frustrating for us to sit here, and I’m sure for our viewers as well, when we ask MPs questions and it’s hard to get a straight answer even when you ask a question two or three times sometimes about what would your position be on this it’s always ifs and buts.”

“You asked me if I want a general election, of course we want a general election,” Long-Bailey replied.

Walker interrupted to continue: “I know but don’t you think straight answers, they resonate with people, especially at a time like this?”

Long-Bailey retorted: “I am giving you straight answers, you asked me if we want a general election, of course we want a general election.

“We’ve asked for that repeatedly of a number of weeks and months now because we need to get rid of a Conservative government that’s done untold damage.

“Not just in relation to Brexit but to normal people’s lives right across the country.”

Some viewers were quick to agree with Walker and took to Twitter to comment.

One shared: “@BBCBreakfast @mrdanwalker I completely agree with you – it’s beyond frustrating when Politicians just repeat their agreed sound bites without actually answering a question.”

“@BBCBreakfast @mrdanwalker You’ve hit the nail on the head. We’re all fed up with empty promises. Please don’t interview people who won’t commit to anything,” a second added.

As the government shutdown over Trump’s border wall rages, a journey along the entire 1,933-mile US-Mexico border shows the monumental task of securing it https://briefnews.eu/as-the-government-shutdown-over-trumps-border-wall-rages-a-journey-along-the-entire-1933-mile-us-mexico-border-shows-the-monumental-task-of-securing-it/ https://briefnews.eu/as-the-government-shutdown-over-trumps-border-wall-rages-a-journey-along-the-entire-1933-mile-us-mexico-border-shows-the-monumental-task-of-securing-it/#respond Sun, 13 Jan 2019 16:51:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/as-the-government-shutdown-over-trumps-border-wall-rages-a-journey-along-the-entire-1933-mile-us-mexico-border-shows-the-monumental-task-of-securing-it/ border wall map full borderSkye Gould/Andy Kiersz/Business Insider

  • The US government is currently shut down because President Donald Trump is demanding billions of dollars to build a wall along the US-Mexico border, and Congress won’t fund it.
  • Of the 1,933 miles along the border, 1,279 miles is unfenced.
  • Most of the barrier that currently exists, and that the Trump administration has built, isn’t the high concrete wall Trump talked about on the campaign trail, and instead resembles a fence.

From western California to eastern Texas, across four US states and 24 counties, the 1,933-mile US-Mexico border criss-crosses arid desert, rugged mountains, and winding rivers.

For 654 of those miles, fencing separates the two countries from each other.

The 7.3 million people who live in the border counties on each side of the line have watched for years as security grew tighter and illegal crossings tapered off.

In just the last 12 years, the US government built the barriers, deployed troops, and started using advanced surveillance technology — all in an effort to tame and control some of the wildest and remotest land in the United States.

In an effort to make good on campaign promises to “build that wall,” President Donald Trump has refused to back down on his demand that Congress allocate $ 5.7 billion for the project, plunging the government into a weeks-long shutdown after Senate Democrats refused to back a spending bill with the wall funding.

Democrats, who now control the House of Representatives, have long opposed Trump’s wall and placed the blame for the shutdown on Trump.

The shutdown comes amid controversy over US immigration and border policies, after two young migrant children died in Border Patrol custody last month. The deaths also come on the heels of outrage over the Trump administration’s family separation policy over the summer, which split thousands of children from their parents.

With public outrage has growing toward the government’s immigration policies, it’s worth taking a look at the complexity of the borderlands to understand the daunting task of securing them.

From the Pacific Ocean in the west to the Gulf of Mexico in the east, here’s what the entire US-Mexico border looks like.

California has stood more defiantly than any other state against Trump’s immigration agenda and his long-promised wall. Yet the Golden State’s southern boundary is one of the most thoroughly fortified along the entire US-Mexico border.

Though some Trump critics have seized upon his deployment of the National Guard in California, the San Diego coastline already hosts around 55 guardsman who assist in “counterdrug missions” and conduct surveillance support.

Tiger Tiara facing daunting task https://briefnews.eu/tiger-tiara-facing-daunting-task/ https://briefnews.eu/tiger-tiara-facing-daunting-task/#respond Sat, 08 Dec 2018 15:26:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tiger-tiara-facing-daunting-task/ The indomitable Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen yard cost Tiger Tara a New Zealand Cup dream a month ago and again seems the biggest danger to the New South Wales star securing further Group 1 success.

Spankem and Cruz Bromac both won TAB Inter Dominion Round 3 heats at Cranbourne on Saturday night — Cruz Bromac is undefeated this series — and they head the betting charts.

Tiger Tara also won his third-round heat and, despite going into ID18 as the top-ranked horse, he’s slipped to the third line of betting at $ 5.

“It’s going to come down to the draw, but I just have to say a few prayers and hope for a good alley,” Tiger Tara’s winning driver Todd McCarthy said.

The Kevin Pizzuto-trained Tiger did the lion’s share of the work in the New Zealand Cup, covering plenty of ground in the run before All Stars gun Thefixer bloused him along the sprint lane.

His connections will be desperate for redemption in the Inter Dominion.

“He’s very tough. The distance is going to play into his hands,” McCarthy said. ”One thing’s for sure, he’s going to do his best for us.”

Rasmussen had loads of praise for four-year-old Spankem.

“He is just loving the trip,” the winning driver said.

“That bit of one-on-one with him … he thinks he’s a big boy now. He’s just loving it.”

Meanwhile, there’s no such thing as a fait accompli in an Inter Dominion series but Tornado Valley is pretty close to it.

The Andy Gath-trained star easily prevailed in his third-round ID18 heat last night with Kate Gath in the sulky. Even Tornado Valley’s bandages coming undone at the top of the home straight couldn’t bring the champ undone.

Ever the professional, the favourite didn’t flinch and won by 6.3m over Save Our Pennys.

“If he draws poorly it will make things a hell of a lot harder, but he is versatile so it’s not the end of the world,” Kate Gath said when asked about Tornado Valley’s Grand Final chances.

Kiwi champ Speeding Spur won the other trotting heat for John and Josh Dickie.

10 Best Task List Apps Out There for Getting Stuff Done https://briefnews.eu/10-best-task-list-apps-out-there-for-getting-stuff-done/ https://briefnews.eu/10-best-task-list-apps-out-there-for-getting-stuff-done/#respond Wed, 05 Sep 2018 13:51:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/10-best-task-list-apps-out-there-for-getting-stuff-done/ Life is a continual series of tasks. From the daily nitty gritty to the higher level juicier ones (like goals and aspirations), you’re faced with a stack of tasks requiring your attention. At the end of each day, it’s up to you to decide how much of it you feel like accomplishing.Unfortunately, we’re inundated with opportunities to slack off and procrastinate, and it’s crucial we need a legitimate source to keep track of everything stacked on our plates. There are a ton of really well-made apps out there designed to help you stay on top of your to-dos. So I decided to take a look at some of the more popular ones and compile a list of what I think are a combination of the best ones.Without further ado, here are the top 10 task list apps out there to help you stay focused, sharp and ready to tackle your life’s biggest goals (and daily tasks):

1. Todoist

A solid choice looks-wise and a task-list app veteran, Todoist touts itself as super user friendly. It’s got a great system allowing you to create sub-tasks, assign due dates, and color code tasks based on priority. It also integrates with a variety of popular third party apps like Gmail, IFTTT, and more. You can even sign up using your Google account and immediately jump in to creating tasks.Available for iOS | Android

2. Trello

Trello really shines in business settings. It’s the go-to app to manage tasks for a lot of smaller companies. Each project is represented by a “board”, and you can then assign multiple tasks to each project via what Trello calls “Cards”.Dragging and dropping is intuitive and makes the experience super smooth, especially on a computer. There is an iOS/Android version, but if you use this, it’s best on a PC or Mac to create and manage the tasks. There are better, easier apps if it’s just for your personal stuff — but for a small team or business, this is one of the best out there.Available for iOS | Android | Web

3. Google Tasks

Fairly new on the scene, Google is taking their stab at the ever popular and saturated task-list app market. But in true Google fashion, it’s nothing to look past.Simple, beautiful, and easy to use, Google Tasks is a designer’s dream come true and a user’s best friend. It does what it does best: track your tasks. The rest of the bells and whistles are left for others. And of course, it’s seamlessly integrated into Gmail, where it appears on the right side of your inbox, should you use it.Available for iOS | Android | Web

4. Evernote

If you find yourself taking longer notes instead of just quick one-liners, Evernote may be the way to go.It’s well-known for its ability to capture your thoughts in more than just a few words, making it intuitive and easy to track your mind’s daily brain dumps.More than just text, it supports taking notes via voice recordings, pictures, and more.So if you’re definitely one of those more visual people, Evernote is calling your name.Available for iOS | Android

5. Wunderlist

A fan favorite, this app has been around for years and continues to dominate based on it’s ease of use and super sharp GUI (graphical user interface, i.e. the way it looks to the end-user).It’s been voted App of the Year in multiple publications, including the Apple App Store. In short, you can create different task lists based on a category, and then share those with others. For instance, if your husband or wife sends you to the grocery store, the two of you can share a list and both can edit on the fly, allowing for on the fly collaboration. It is also fully integrated with Slack now, one of the most popular chat apps on the tech market today.Available for iOS | Android

6. Microsoft To Do

If you’re a Microsoft fan, you’d be pleased to know they’ve also taken a stab at making their own task list app.It was originally created by the team at Wunderlist (Microsoft bought them in 2015), so if you’re familiar with the app, then you have an idea of what you’re getting here.Furthermore, if you are locked into using Outlook and Microsoft’s suite of tools, this app will naturally integrate seamlessly. One unique feature is their take on what they call “My Day” — the philosophy that each day is a blank slate and you’re given the opportunity to fill it as you see fit.In other words, there’s no carryover from previous days if you don’t want. But if you do, the option is there.Available for iOS | Android

7. Things 3

There’s a common theme here for the best task list trackers, and it involves one thing: looking good.Things 3 is no different, but it takes the clean GUI to a new level.Made for individuals looking to keep tabs on their daily to-dos, it splits things into simple tasks and lists without the extra bells & whistles some apps may carry.Available for iOS

8. Habitica

Words, pictures, and voice memos not doing it for you?Enjoy playing games in your spare time and want to transfer the same feeling into your boring task list?Enter Habitica, which turns your tracking into gaming of sorts. When you first start the app, instead of asking what your first to-do is, it asks you to create a character. And just like that, you know the intent of this app — by gamifying the system, you’ll be more inclined to keep track and stay efficient.Available for iOS | Android

9. Any.do

This app stands out for its unique take on organizing your lists.Instead of putting them in categories such as “Work”, “Personal”, and others, any.do will show you the tasks which you need to accomplish first. So if you’ve set a personal goal due tomorrow, you’ll see it first…even if work is bugging you nonstop at the moment.Any.do also syncs up nicely with your calendar, working side by side to show you what deadlines you’ve set.Available for iOS | Android

10. Fantastical 2

If you can’t let go of the idea of integrating a calendar in your daily to-dos, then look no further.Fantastical 2’s sweet spot is it’s actually just that: a calendar. But with your to-do’s built in on the GUI, you can see exactly what you need to do and at what time, all wrapped in a more visual way than just simply showing a wall of text.Unfortunately, Fantastical 2 is only for iOS — but with such a clean interface, it’s hard not to be a fan.Available for iOS | MacOS

The bottom line

These are considered some of the top ones that I feel could make a difference in your quest to tackle this thing called “life”.Ultimately, the choice is yours — but as you begin to track your tasks, you’ll find that certain methods work better than others. Hey, we’re all different.Whether you’re visual, list-oriented, calendar-heavy, sound-induced, or any combination thereof, rest assured there’s an app out there to help you.

Bots on Amazon’s task service may be souring psych studies https://briefnews.eu/bots-on-amazons-task-service-may-be-souring-psych-studies/ https://briefnews.eu/bots-on-amazons-task-service-may-be-souring-psych-studies/#respond Sun, 19 Aug 2018 03:06:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bots-on-amazons-task-service-may-be-souring-psych-studies/

It’s not uncommon for scientists to use Amazon’s Mechanical Turk for research — they can quickly gather survey data in return for a small outlay to participants. Academics are quickly discovering the limits of the task service with the modern bot-happy internet, however. Numerous psychology researchers have reported a sharp rise in the number of junk responses to their questions, many of which appear to come from bots. The offenders not only spam nonsensical answers to questions (such as “nice” or “good”), but tend to originate from the same location. And while anti-bot measures like captchas are in use, they aren’t always reliable.

There’s a chance that these could be people copying and pasting text, or using some form of automation to find the surveys (which Amazon allows). However, Amazon wouldn’t provide evidence one way or the other. The company told Wired in a statement that it had “automated and manual mechanisms” to fight bots, but it wouldn’t comment on bot activity levels or specific incidents.

Whatever the cause, the psychology study problems underscore deeper issues with Mechanical Turk. Bots are a reality on the service, and Amazon doesn’t always appear to acknowledge them even after multiple reports. And then there’s Mechanical Turk’s low per-task pay. While that can help scientists worried that large rewards could skew results, it encourages completing tasks en masse rather than providing high-quality answers. It may be increasingly difficult to conduct meaningful surveys on Amazon’s service, at least without tossing out many of the responses.

NSA leader creates task force to fight Russian cyberattacks https://briefnews.eu/nsa-leader-creates-task-force-to-fight-russian-cyberattacks/ https://briefnews.eu/nsa-leader-creates-task-force-to-fight-russian-cyberattacks/#respond Sun, 22 Jul 2018 23:33:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nsa-leader-creates-task-force-to-fight-russian-cyberattacks/

The President might have claimed that Russia stopped hacking the US, but intelligence officials know otherwise — and they’re stepping up their fight against the ongoing threat. Recently installed NSA and Cyber Command chief Paul Nakasone has created a dedicated task force (the Russia Small Group) to tackle online threats from Putin’s regime. While he wasn’t specific about what the group would do, he said it was “in line” with what intelligence agencies have been doing ever since the 2016 presidential election. In short: they’re devoting extra energy to preventing a repeat of the widespread hacking from two years ago.

Nakasone argued that this wasn’t optional. If the US decided to “stand on the sidelines” and didn’t focus its energy on digital adversaries like Russia and China, it risked letting those opponents shape the virtual battlefield. They “undermine” elections, stoke social tensions and steal sensitive info, Nakasone said — you need people who can tackle this on a “continual basis.”

It’s not shocking that Nakasone would pursue this route. He’s a four-star Army general who is running both the NSA as well as a recently elevated Cyber Command. If anyone is likely to both focus on threats from specific countries and see the bigger picture of online security, it’s him. The question is whether or not the Russia Small Group will have a meaningful effect on the 2018 mid-term elections. It might, but it was formed so recently that it may need time to reach its full potential and give Russia second thoughts.

Australia task force will protect elections against cyberattacks https://briefnews.eu/australia-task-force-will-protect-elections-against-cyberattacks/ https://briefnews.eu/australia-task-force-will-protect-elections-against-cyberattacks/#respond Sun, 10 Jun 2018 10:32:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/australia-task-force-will-protect-elections-against-cyberattacks/

Governments around the world are taking various steps to prevent foreign elements from meddling with their elections. For some of them, it’s to prevent foreign interference yet again — the US, for instance, might use paper ballot backups that will allow officials to double check results. Australia is taking things a step further, though, and has formed a task force to guard its election process against cyberattacks and other methods. It’s called the “Electoral Integrity Task Force,” and it involves multiple agencies, including the Department of Finance and Home Affairs. A spokesperson told Reuters that the group will be in charge of identifying and addressing risks to the country’s electoral process.

He added that it’s not targeted “at any specific threat actor or impending malicious action,” but it’s likely a product of the Australian intelligence community’s warnings that foreign entities are trying to access classified info about the country’s military, economy and energy system. In fact, the government is expected to pass anti-foreign interference laws following reports of Chinese meddling, and they’ve been the cause of increasing friction between the two nations.

The task force’s spokesperson said in a statement that the group “is a precautionary measure,” which the country’s government believes will need to become the norm “in the age of increasing levels of cyber-enabled interference and disruption.” We’ll know very, very just how effective the task force is and if other countries should take a leaf out Australia’s book: the country is having five federal by-elections next month.

A critical task for the Greek economy enters a new phase https://briefnews.eu/a-critical-task-for-the-greek-economy-enters-a-new-phase/ https://briefnews.eu/a-critical-task-for-the-greek-economy-enters-a-new-phase/#respond Sat, 02 Jun 2018 01:18:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-critical-task-for-the-greek-economy-enters-a-new-phase/

OF THE €57.7bn ($ 68.2bn) of loans that Piraeus Bank, one of Greece’s four dominant lenders, had on its books at the end of March, €20.5bn were more than 90 days overdue. A further €11.7bn were also deemed unlikely to be repaid. In all, at the end of 2017 Greek banks carried €95.7bn of such non-performing exposures (NPEs)—at 43.1% of loans, the heaviest burden in Europe. Still, the pile was €13bn smaller than at its peak in March 2016. The banks plan to reduce it by €30bn this year and next.

Dealing with bad loans to business—around 60% of NPEs, mostly to small firms—is the most daunting part of this monumental job. It means resetting the balance-sheet of much of Greece’s economy, from restaurants to manufacturing. But a new phase of this task is under way, with the first sale of secured commercial loans. On May 29th Piraeus said it had agreed to sell Amoeba, a €1.45bn bundle of loans to around 180 borrowers, to Bain Capital Credit, which has previously bought bad debts in Italy and Spain. The collateral, comprising about 1,700 properties, is mainly in big cities. Other banks have been watching keenly. Alpha Bank, another of the four big banks, is weighing a similar sale. Bankers and investors say Amoeba has helpfully spawned an ecosystem of buyers and advisers.

Clearing away the NPE rubble and renewing lending are both…
