India has drawn awe from every corner of the world as it unveiled its Statue of Unity, a monumental 182 meter-high effigy which costs an eye-watering $ 400 million. The monument has become the world’s tallest statue.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday morning inaugurated the statue, located in India’s western state of Gujarat, and is dedicated to independence fighter Sardar Patel.

The PM hailed the statue as an answer to those who always question India, before adding: “It shows that India was, is and always will be eternal.”

The monument, on which thousands of people have worked on since its foundation stone was set in October 2013, has beaten China’s ‘Spring Temple Buddha’ to be the world’s tallest statue.

But the statue wasn’t welcomed by everyone.

Local villagers have written to the PM saying the inauguration is “akin to celebrating someone’s death” as the statue’s construction entailed the wiping out of natural resources which had for years given farmers a living.

The headmen of 22 villages wrote to the PM saying they wouldn’t welcome him at the ceremony.

Hanging almost 500 meters in the air, one man with nerves of steel managed to capture the thrilling beauty of St. Petersburg and the Gulf of Finland from the spire of the Lakhta Center, the tallest building in Europe.

Rising above the waterfront business complex at 462 meters, a construction crew worker could not resist the spectacular view of Russia’s Venice of the North at dusk. Holding his hands on top of the spire, the man recorded a bird’s eye view of the surroundings with the camera attached to his safety helmet.

The 87 story Lakhta Center is nearing completion after six years of construction. Designed by British firm RMJM, the business complex on the outskirts of the historic city is set to be Europe’s new tallest skyscraper. The tower, which twists a full 90 degrees from its foundation to its top will offer residential and commercial space as well as an observation deck over the Gulf of Finland. The tower will also headquarter the Russian gas giant Gazprom, which is set to move in by the end of 2019.

The tallest waterfalls in the world – 20 times bigger than Niagara Falls https://briefnews.eu/the-tallest-waterfalls-in-the-world-20-times-bigger-than-niagara-falls/ https://briefnews.eu/the-tallest-waterfalls-in-the-world-20-times-bigger-than-niagara-falls/#respond Fri, 06 Apr 2018 06:34:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-tallest-waterfalls-in-the-world-20-times-bigger-than-niagara-falls/

The tallest waterfalls in the world are scattered across the globe with a number of them located in South America and the US.

Whilst many may believe that Niagara Falls is the biggest waterfall in the world, it pales in comparison to the tallest.

It is 20 times smaller than the tallest that is just a few metres below 1000m.

Yet where are the tallest in the world? The top two are disputed regarding which is actually the highest.

The top five can be found in Venezuela, Peru, South Africa and Hawaii.

1. Angel Falls, Venezuela – 979m (3,212 feet)

Found in the Canaima National Park in Venezuela is Angel Falls, the highest and uninterrupted waterfall in the world.

It was named after Jimmi Angel, an American aviator who was the first person to fly over it in 1933.

Whilst it can be difficult to access due to the heavy jungle surrounding it, it is still a popular tourist attraction for visitors.

2. Tugela Falls, South Africa – 948m (3,110 feet)

Whilst it is often seen as the second-tallest in the world, Tugela Falls may actually be the tallest thanks to new measurements.

A recent expedition by Czech science to the Royal Natal National Park measured it at 983m, making it taller than Angel Falls.

3. Tres Hermanas Falls, Peru – 914m (2,999 feet)

Also known as the Waterfalls of the Three Sisters, it is named due to the three drops that break into the waterfall.

It is found in the Otishi National Park, which protects the area and is also home to the Pavirontsi Natural Bridge, the largest natural bridge in the world that is known.

4. Olo’upena Falls, Hawaii, US – 900m (2,953 feet)

The North-Eastern part of the island of Hawaii is home to the Olo’upena Falls.

Whilst just the fourth tallest waterfall in the world, it is one of the tallest sea-side waterfalls in the world as it falls between Pelekunu and Wailau valleys.

It is also the highest in the US and can only be seen by air or sea.

5. Yumbilla Falls, Peru – 896m (2,940 feet)

Peru is home to two of the tallest waterfalls in the world with the Yumbilla found deep in the Amazonas rainforests.

It became known to the world after a study by the Geographical Institute of Peru in 2007.

A paraglider once somersaulted over one of the world’s largest waterfalls in Brazil.

The Iguaza Falls measures at 269 feet tall and is also known as the Devil’s Throat.

Produced for Red Bull, the heart-stopping video showcases a stunning view across the waterfalls.

Here’s what the same dam looks like on Monday, February 13:

oroville damCalifornia Department of Water Resources

Not surprisingly, the state was somewhat unprepared for the dam’s water levels to reach capacity, which they did — rapidly — on February 9.

After the dam’s water levels steadily rose from Thursday through the weekend, authorities on Sunday evening ordered the evacuation of nearly 200,000 residents in several northern California towns.

“Immediate evacuation from the low levels of Oroville and areas downstream is ordered,” the Butte County sheriff’s office posted on Facebook.

Officials have not released information on what exactly caused the dam’s structural problems, including a gaping hole in the middle of the spillway. But issues in the area may have been brewing since as early as least March, when the Sacramento Bee reported that both of California’s two largest reservoirs — which had been decimated for years by the drought — bumped up to historically average levels after a weekend of heavy storms.

It was, at first, good news.

Experts said California’s five-year drought was the worst the state had seen in 1,200 years. Dwindling reservoirs, shrinking lakes, and dried-up farm fields dominated the landscape. The state’s snowpack reserves, which typically supply California’s farmers and residents with roughly a third of their water, lingered at their lowest level in history in 2015.

The state responded slowly, with some urban conservation mandates requiring residents to use less water while supplies were so low.

In March of last year, Felicia Marcus, chair of the State Water Resources Control Board, told the Sacramento Bee that those mandates would finally be loosened in the coming months as water levels looked to be returning to normal — the first time they’d done so since 2013.

“In May, we’ll be either lifting it or changing it significantly,” she said in March. “The more precipitation we get, the more snowpack we have, the better it is.”

That month, the combined supply at all of California’s biggest reservoirs stood around 78% of their average levels, but officials remained cautiously optimistic, saying there was no guarantee that the state would see enough continuous storms to raise water levels completely.

On Tuesday, February 7, engineers discovered a 250-foot-long pothole in the Oroville Dam’s main spillway, which forced them to bring all water releases there to a halt. The spillway is traditionally used to drain some of the excess water into surrounding areas, so with it closed, the reservoir began to fill. In less than a day, it took on some 150,000 acre-feet of water, the Sacramento Bee reported, filling to roughly 85% capacity.

At the time, the California Department of Water Resources reported that the dam itself was safe and did not pose a threat to downstream populations. “These are things we can repair,” Eric See, the agency’s environmental program manager, told the Sacramento Bee on Tuesday.

But the water kept coming.

Two days later, after the gaping hole in the spillway had continued to grow, the spillway gave in completely, and a complete break could be seen all the way across the structure:

As of Thursday afternoon, the dam continued to release thousands of turbo-charged cubic feet of water each second, including from the broken spillway. It wasn’t enough to compensate for all the excess water brought in by storms, however, and heavy rainfall on Saturday caused the dam to overflow for the first time in its 49-year history, according to The Associated Press.

Authorities ordered the evacuation of nearly 200,000 residents in several northern California towns Sunday night.

“Immediate evacuation from the low levels of Oroville and areas downstream is ordered,” the Butte County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook.

“Operation of the auxiliary spillway has lead to severe erosion that could lead to a failure of the structure. Failure of the auxiliary spillway structure will result in an uncontrolled release of flood waters from Lake Oroville.”

The evacuation warning was “NOT a drill,” the sheriff’s office added.

Anticipating the failure of the dam’s auxiliary spillway, officials in the northern California town frantically attempted to drain water from the main spillway, at a clip of 100,000 cubic feet per second, according to the Sacramento Bee. Helicopters dropped sand and rocks into a sinkhole in the spillway to stem the erosion.

“It’s uncontrolled. It’s uncontrolled,” Department of Water Resources spokesman Chris Orrock said, when asked how much water could be released should the spillway fail.

Later Sunday evening, officials said the threat of collapse due to erosion had diminished, according to the Sacramento Bee. Water levels fell to a point at which little or no water flowed out of the emergency spillway, which Orrock said was the main factor in its erosion.

An evacuation center was set up in Chico, a nearby town north of Oroville, the sheriff’s office said on Twitter. Traffic heading out of Oroville appeared to slow to a crawl as thousands of residents attempted to flee. Residents of seven towns in neighboring Yuba and Sutter counties were also instructed to evacuate.

The number of residents ordered to evacuate totaled 188,000, according to AFP.

At 770 feet, Oroville Dam is the tallest dam in the United States. It could take up to $ 200 million to repair the damaged spillway, according to the Los Angeles Times.

This story is developing.

Ecological threats loom amid rising Calif. reservoir, damaged spillway at tallest US dam https://briefnews.eu/ecological-threats-loom-amid-rising-calif-reservoir-damaged-spillway-at-tallest-us-dam/ https://briefnews.eu/ecological-threats-loom-amid-rising-calif-reservoir-damaged-spillway-at-tallest-us-dam/#respond Fri, 10 Feb 2017 22:27:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ecological-threats-loom-amid-rising-calif-reservoir-damaged-spillway-at-tallest-us-dam/ A damaged spillway that diverts overflow from a major California reservoir has authorities preparing to use a forested emergency spill route if Lake Oroville continues to rise. A salmon hatchery below the dam is currently at risk, officials say.

Rising levels of Northern California’s Lake Oroville, a reservoir contained by the Oroville Dam, the largest dam in the US, led to severe erosion of a paved spillway that helps divert overflow water into the Feather River behind the dam.

On Tuesday, a chunk of the spillway collapsed, sending mud and debris into the river, as officials with the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) temporarily ceased the overflow route to inspect the problem. Yet flows had to continue as the reservoir continued to rise. The section of collapsed spillway has grown to more than 200 feet wide and 30 feet deep, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. If the reservoir continues to balloon, authorities say they will have to use an emergency spillway, which is essentially a nearby wooded hillside.

“DWR shut off flows temporarily to investigate but has resumed using the gated spillway channel in order to try to avoid having the lake rise to elevation 901 feet above sea level, the point at which water naturally flows over a concrete weir and down a wooded hillside,” the DWR said in a statement Friday.

The DWR says the public is not currently at risk, as the US Army Corps of Engineers has said the main dam is sound.

“None of this emergency we have now is affecting the integrity of the dam itself,” said Bill Croyle, deputy director of the DWR. “I think that’s important … there’s no risk to the public.”

Nevertheless, authorities have told residents near the Feather River to be prepared for a potential emergency evacuation, Reuters reported.

More precipitation on Thursday pushed reservoir operators to increase flow to the eroded spillway from 40,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) to 65,000 cfs, DWR said.

“The higher flows further eroded the gated spillway channel,  but not to a point that would compromise the integrity of the dam upstream,” the department said. “DWR and many federal and state partners are monitoring the spillway erosion carefully and are prepared to ramp down flows if necessary.”

Crews are currently clearing more than 50 acres of brush and debris along the hillside in order to limit what flows into the Feather River in case the emergency spillway is used, officials said, according to the Chronicle.

The DWR said the emergency spillway has not been used since the 770-foot Oroville Dam, a major source of water throughout the state, was constructed 48 years ago. Lake Oroville came within about a foot of the emergency track in January 1997, the agency said.

Meanwhile, the Feather River Fish Hatchery, the source of about seven million Chinook salmon and steelhead per season, has taken in severe water turbidity levels as a result of the overflow and damaged spillway. On Thursday, turbidity, or cloudiness, levels were about 40 times above normal, according to Harry Morse, spokesman for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

“This is just uncharted territory,” Morse said, according to the Chronicle.

For fear of mass fish kills amid the debris- and mud-filled water flowing into the hatchery, state Fish and Wildlife crews have rushed to transport about four million baby salmon to a downstream hatchery that is safe from rapid inflows. An additional four million fish will have to remain at the hatchery, Morse said.

4 die in California storms, state of emergency declared

Crews worked Thursday in waist-deep muddy water to funnel baby fish to tanker trucks that would transport them downstream, according to the Sacramento Bee.

The hatchery is “very important” to California’s salmon industry, said John McManus, executive director of the Golden Gate Salmon Association. Officials estimated that the hatchery raised between 63 percent and 76 percent of California’s recreational and commercial ocean fish catches, respectively.

“The loss of hatchery-produced salmon from Feather River Hatchery would be a major blow to salmon fishermen in California,” McManus said, the Sacramento Bee reported.

Use of the emergency spillway would only increase damage to the hatchery, Morse said.

“This is a work in progress, and it has not been done before,” he said of attempts to partially clear the hatchery, according to the Chronicle. “It’s ongoing as we speak.”

Cal Fire units are among those helping to clear trees from the ravine in case the emergency spillway is used.
