Take-Two is the latest major games publisher to open up an indie label. From the sounds of it, Private Division will operate like a smaller scale version of Take-Two itself, giving developers leeway to work on things at their own pace and not worry about pumping out a sea of annual sequels.

So far, it’s signed projects from a handful of former-AAA developers including an RPG from David Goldfarb (Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3) and an unannounced RPG from fan-favorite Obsidian Entertainment (Fallout: New Vegas, South Park: The Stick of Truth). That’s in addition to Assassin’s Creed creator Patrice Désilets’ Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey. Oh, and it’s also publishing Kerbal Space Program and Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto’s unnamed new sci-fi shooter.

Aside from the upcoming Kerbal expansion, none of the other games are expected to be released anytime soon. The fine print on a press release says that none of the other games are planned for Take-Two’s fiscal years ending March 31st, 2018 and 2019. Which is understandable considering most games take between two and three years to develop, on average.

Major publishers setting up indie labels has been a win-win so far. Electronic Arts has its EA Originals program which currently has Fe and A Way Out in gestation. Then there’s Microsoft’s ID@Xbox program, Square Enix Collective and Sony’s recently-launched Unties imprint. These help give the big names cred and a place for pursuing risky ideas that might not fly in the AAA space. It also means that the quirky games get a marketing budget so they don’t languish unheard of on Steam or your favorite digital store.

Take-Two Interactive teased a new game during its earnings call today, saying that it would launch an unnamed game under the 2K label in the fiscal year that ends March 31, 2019.

The company said that results for that fiscal year would be driven by Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 and “a highly anticipated new title from one of 2K’s biggest franchises.”

That set off a lot of speculation on the Internet, with fans hoping for follow-up titles in the XCOM and Borderlands franchises. But Take-Two didn’t give any indication of what the new title would be. Karl Slatoff, president of Take-Two Interactive, said in the earnings call that Take-Two would not show any brand new games on the show floor at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in June.

The last game in the XCOM series was XCOM 2, which debuted on the PC in February 2016 and on the consoles in September 2016. Borderlands saw its last release in 2014 with Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. Gearbox Software’s Randy Pitchford also showed technology for a new game in March at the Game Developers Conference, and the art clearly looked like a Borderlands game.

Other 2K properties include Mafia, Civilization, BioShock, NBA 2K, WWE 2K,and The Darkness.

It’s been suggested that GTA 5 Online is set to be slowly put out to pasture to make way for the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, later this year.

Sources familiar with how production of content for the game is put together have reported that Rockstar’s resources have been pulled away from Grand Theft Auto 5, meaning a slowdown in content.

It would also affect the depth of future GTA 5 Online update, with more reuse of scrapped ideas and features.

Rockstar’s latest update on the situation only went as far as confirming that new DLC drops were being planned for 2017, however, they didn’t go much further than that.

“Stay tuned for upcoming info on new updates in the works for GTA Online in 2017,” Rockstar revealed.

However, today’s earning call for Rockstar parent publisher Take-Two Interactive focused on the subject of RDR 2 and GTA 5 Online directly competing.

This is what CEO Strauss Zelnick had to say on the matter: “I’m fond of saying entertainment is an unusual animal, in that entertainment properties don’t really compete with other entertainment properties.

“You never need entertainment. Entertainment is something that you want to have, but it’s not a need to have. If nothing in the market appeals to you at some time, there is no reason to go and get it, and if multiple things appeal to you, avid consumers will consume all of those things.

“So, I don’t think there is any competitive dynamic with any of our upcoming releases, apart from the fact that our success is driven by quality. 

“So I think the success of [Red Dead Redemption 2], which is highly anticipated, will be driven by its quality, and I think that the ongoing success of Grand Theft Auto Online is driven by its extraordinary quality.”

So by Zelnick’s own dissection of the situation, it would seem that GTA 5 Online stays popular due to the quality put into it by Rockstar, meaning that they will need to continue this pattern if they want to keep the current number of players engaged.

And to be honest, you could understand why Take-Two wouldn’t want to see GTA 5 Online drop off.

The game has now shipped 75m copies, and the company has confirmed that the likes of GTA V, GTA Online, Civilization VI, and NBA 2K17 are the titles with the best performing microtransactions, DLC, and virtual currency.

Recurrent consumer spending made up 39 percent of digital revenue and 20 percent of total revenue, if Rockstar could crack both GTA and Red Dead Redemption 2 multiplayer mode’s running side-by-side, it could paint a very rosy picture next year.
