Dozens of passengers of a Frontier Airlines flight from Las Vegas to Florida have suffered probably the most chilling 15 minutes of their lives, after an engine on their jet was partially torn apart, forcing an emergency landing.

A section of the jet engine cowling was torn apart after it came loose during Frontier Flight 260’s takeoff in Nevada Friday morning, prompting shocked passengers to “jump up screaming.” Footage of the incident, taken by several people on board the Airbus 320, shows a shredded engine cover hanging on by the last threads to the rest of the unit.

The flight crew immediately requested a return to Las Vegas McCarran International Airport and were allowed to do so at 7:27 am, some 15 minutes after takeoff. Despite the scare, all 166 passengers and six crew members made it back safe. “The engine continued to operate normally and the aircraft, an Airbus 320, landed safely,” the airline reassured its customers.

To save face and somehow compensate travelers for their chilling experience, the company offered them a full refund and a $ 500 voucher for a future Frontier flight. The airline also transferred passengers onto other airlines so they could get to Florida within a reasonable amount of time. The incident is now being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration.

And now a flight attendant has revealed there is one thing any unsuspecting passenger could do which would delay the plane.

But it isn’t sinister behaviour, and in fact is something every does without thinking.

Going to the toilet on a plane which is waiting to takeoff will delay the flight.

This is because when a passenger gets up to use the bathroom, flight attendants much alert the flight deck.

Pilots cannot legally takeoff when passengers are in the bathroom.

Explaining why to Business Insider, Robert Bingochea, a flight attendant for United Airlines, said: “Once the aircraft starts moving, there’s always the fear of someone falling down, and we’re in that position of liability if we don’t let the captain know.”

The plane does not have the all clear to move until the passenger leaves the bathroom – meaning if they go before take-off, the plane will be sat waiting until they are done.

Cabin crew have revealed other shocking insights into flying that passengers may not know about.

One of these is how flight attendants judge how drunk travellers are, and when to stop serving them drinks.

Cabin crew are the final line of defence when it comes to drunk passengers. They are responsible for the safety of the rest of the people on the plane, so it’s up to them to use their judgement to decide if someone has had enough to drink.

If they think more alcohol might lead to an escalation of bad behaviour, the person will be cut off.

They are trained to spot intoxicated passengers as they board the plane, or people who try to avoid eye contact at the doors.

This information is then shared between attendants shortly after take-off.

A flight attendant told The Telegraph that cabin crew carefully judge a person’s drunkenness before allowing them alcoholic beverages. As well as looking for slurring or swaying, attendants “watch for passengers who go to the bathroom more often than normal.”

They also know to keep an eye out for passengers who “switch between galleys when they ask for more, assuming the staff at both don’t share notes.”

Many airlines use a ‘traffic-light’ code, it reported. “Mellow and affable behaviour will put you into the green category, getting more loud and animated puts you in yellow – at which point a flight attendant will clock you and possibly offer you some water – and red means it’s cut-off time.”

One flight attendant told CNN Travel that some crew try to judge a person’s intoxication by engaging them in a humorous conversation.

This also serves to keep them on-side and stop them becoming aggressive.

Kim Kaswinkel recalled a fellow attendant’s tactic: “She asked the gentleman who had a lot to drink, ‘Do you think I’m pretty?’ He said, ‘Oh honey, you’re beautiful,’ and she said, ‘You’re drunk, you’re cut off.’”

Another common strategy used to diffuse a potentially angry situation with a drunk passenger is to switch between crew members.

A private plane has crashed on a road in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, shortly after it took off from the runway. At least six people were injured, none fatally, with photos showing the plane being broken in half.

The Honduran Aviation Agency said that the incident took place at 11:15 am [5:15 pm GMT] on Tuesday as the plane was departing from Tegucigalpa. The plane, a Gulfstream G200 Galaxy N813WM jet, is said to have crashed at the end of a two-kilometer runway at Toncontin International Airport, known as one of the world’s most dangerous airports due to its short runway and a tricky approach. The airport is located in rocky terrain and is enclosed by residential neighborhoods.

As the rescues arrived, they doused the plane with foam, although it’s unclear if the fire had broken out before or after the crash. The destination of the plane and the cause of the crash are also unknown at the moment. Earlier that morning, the plane left Austin, Texas, for Honduras, according to the aviation records. 

Toncontin International Airport was named the second most dangerous air haven in the world by the American History Channel’s ‘Most Extreme Airports’ program. It has seen several high-profile mishaps through the years, with the deadliest being in 1989, when a Boeing crashed with 131 people on board. The authorities vowed to replace the airport with a new one, that would have a longer runway and would be located further away from the residential area, near a military base. The construction of the airport began in October 2016 and was initially set to be completed by mid-2018. However, the work has been plagued by delays and, according to the government’s newest projections, the airport is now to open its doors in November next year.

So it was important for the Jets to get an early goal and they did — three times. Defenceman Dustin Byfuglien continued his excellent postseason with a 49-foot blast, from a Mark Scheifele drop pass, 65 seconds into the game. Then Patrik Laine on the power play and Joel Armia scored 46 seconds apart for a three-goal lead before the game was eight minutes old.​

Fleury had surrendered as many as four goals in only two of his 10 outings in this playoff run and one of those games was a 43-save defeat in double overtime.

Tale of numbers

It's important to win the opener. The team that won Game 1 went on to win nine of the 12 series in the first and second rounds, including Jets victories in their Game 1s against the Minnesota Wild and Nashville Predators.

But there were questions entering the opener from the Jets standpoint. How much of a letdown would there be after their emotional Game 7 victory in Nashville on Thursday? How much exhaustion would there be against the well-rested Golden Knights, who last played on Sunday evening in San Jose?

Well, it was clear the Jets continued their momentum and received the usual lift from their loud and proud home crowd.

"The thought was we had a potential advantage and disadvantage in this game," Winnipeg head coach Paul Maurice said. "The advantage would be that we were coming right off a very intense series, so our starting point would probably be there. The disadvantage would be it was seven games with some travel involved and would you be able to sustain it for 60 minutes."

The early start allowed Maurice to evenly distribute the minutes among his four lines and three defence pairings. He didn't have to overuse anybody.

But his team also put in the effort and outworked Vegas.

Decisive factors

The forwards backchecked and the Jets, as a unit, did an excellent job breaking up the Golden Knights vaunted transition game and penchant for cross-ice passes, holding Vegas to only 21 shots on goal.

"We knew their team speed was pretty intimidating," Winnipeg captain Blake Wheeler said. "We have some pretty fast players, too.

"The key with that is you want to eliminate their time and space. You want to allow our defencemen to have tight gaps and to do that the forwards have to get back on the puck. That was an emphasis for us and I thought we did a good job to allow our [defencemen] to be aggressive."

The Armia goal resulted in a lengthy video review as to whether or not there was goaltender interference from the Jets forward, thanks to a successful coach's challenge from Maurice.  

Everything went right for the Jets. Two power-play goals. Byfuglien and Scheifele continued to prove their pluck.

Yes, Hull, Hedberg and Nilsson must have been proud to take this one in.

Shocking footage has captured a United Airline plane which blew a tire after taking off from Newark Liberty International Airport.

However, the plane did not stop and continued with takeoff flying towards Portland International Airport in Oregon.

The footage shows the plane land successfully in Oregon after blowing the tire.

All passengers from flight 1551 arrived safely at their destination.

According to KOIN-TV the plane landed at 10:30 pm local time.

The police and emergency fire crew were on the the runway waiting for the plane to land, which it did without any further sparks.

When speaking to FOX 12 Oregon, a passenger on board the flight reported a loud bang during take off but went on to add that the on board crew handled the situation professionally.

The flight crew followed procedure and demonstrated how to properly brace as well as moving four passengers who were better suited to handling the emergency exits if necessary.

Kyle Hobbs, an on board passenger said: “When we were taking off out of Newark, the plane kind of shuddered as the nose lifted. After that, everything was fine.”

“About 90 minutes before we landed, the crew came out, made sure everyone was awake. Told us we were going to have a problem with the landing gear and to prepare for the worst”.

When speaking to KOIN a PDX spokesperson, Kama Simonds, said: “We received word of an aircraft inbound reporting an issue and we had crews standing by to assist”.

Another passenger Mateo Agemo, told KATU-TV that cabin crew cautioned the passengers at the back of the plane that they need to be prepared.

If complications did arise, these passengers would have had to move towards the front of the plane.

Mateo explained, “I was in the back so I was a little bit nervous but everyone on the plane was nervous. The staff made everyone quiet and relaxed”.

This is not the first time a complicated landing has been caught on camera. Earlier in the year a British Airways plane was prevented from landing due to strong winds.

The footage shows the plane abort landing due to the gail force winds caused by Storm Eleanor.
