The post ‘Vanaris Tactics’ Offers a Brief, But Punchy Tactical Experience appeared first on Indie Games Plus.
]]>Goodbye grid, hello freedom! Mind Over Mushroom takes tactical battles and ditches the grid structure for a more challenging fight, letting you wander as you battle spore-controlled foes. Players will have to mind their distance, as you’re free of grid restraints and able to wander freely (barring terrain obstacles, of course). Be mindful of your positioning and make use of the range of your characters to eliminate some devious fungi.
The world has been consumed by fungus (Gross). People have been infected and controlled by spores, and the only hope for salvation is to defeat the shrooms at their source. You’ll need a few good heroes, and a strong tactical strategy to overcome the journey there, though. Luckily, Mind Over Mushroom is chock full of characters with unique skills and strengths to use in battle. Need a big explosion to wipe out a cluster of foes? Maybe break out the walking bombs. Call up a necromancer to make use of the dead. Send out a carnivorous plant to eat your troubles. There’s even a giant snail, because why not?
With 25 different battles to overcome, and terrains to navigate, you’ll have your hands and brain full. This is especially true due to the free movement, keeping players from being restrained to a grid and allowing them to move where they like. Enemies can do the same, though, so players may find it hard to predict where their foes will go, but a good strategy can help lead these fungal creatures around.
You can find Mind Over Mushroom on Steam. You can also check out the official website!
Soccer plays very differently when the players can summon tornadoes, turn invisible, or call up a wall in front of the net, but it’s all part of bringing tactical RPG elements to the sport with Ganbare! Super Strikers.
You will be helping a small town Japanese soccer team rise up to become world champions in this sport Anime-inspired genre mixture. This team is anything but ordinary, though, as each player has an array of powers that can be used to change up how the sport plays, calling up elemental powers to confound foes or keep the ball out of your net. Your players will also level up with experience, getting better over time, and can be tweaked with equipables to gain a little more edge over the other team.
Each match, whether in story or various league and tournament modes for those who want a quick play, will be carried out on a grid-like map, with players working their positions out so they can best use their abilities to outmaneuver and out-think the opponent. The game doesn’t just take tactical RPG play, though, as it also offers a little flare with its special attacks, making a spectacle of the powers you use to increase the drama of the sport. It’s a delightful genre mixture at its heart, using elements of both to make a wild sports game and an interesting take on tactical RPGs.
Ganbare! Super Strikers is available for $ 9.99 on Itch.io and Steam. Versions for the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PS4 are projected to release later this year. For more information on the game and developer Rese, you can head to the game’s site or follow them on YouTube and Twitter.
]]>With its rustic low-poly aesthetic, systemic world design, and partially hands-off approach to combat, Project Shore looks to be an interesting entry among indie turn-based strategy games.
As a mercenary company commander, you are merely one party among a larger world in Project Shore. Reminiscent of the tactical RPG Battle Brothers, the fate of your mercenary brethren are in your hands, both in combat through smart orders and equipment and off the field through upgrades and picking your battles and navigating the domino effect of your choice of who to fight and how that influences the landscape.
Combat is the core of Project Shore. With up to 18 warriors or more in your unit during a battle, it would be tedious to issue orders to each one as conflicts grow more complex. Instead Project Shore revolves around indirect command. Groups of warriors are divided into “union” to which you order to support, attack, move, hold position, and so on. On a more granular level, “preparation points” lets you fine-tune union behavior and prioritize certain actions, to unleash specific tactics.
Project Shore is still early in development; you can find a alpha download on the game’s IndieDB page and follow its progress through Twitter.
]]>An expanded version of a Ludum Dare 38 entry, Protolife takes the tower defense and gives it a more deliberate hands-on approach, as you construct towers one-block-at-a-time to withstand the incoming insectoid tide.
Reminiscent of Infested Planet’s hordes, Protolife threatens to overwhelm with massive flowing groups of alien bugs. To destroy and hold back the infestion, you must manage thinly-stretched resources and build walls and various types of towers and other defenses. But crucially, rather than playing towers directly, you control a builder bot that makes towers block-by-block, with different designs resulting in different kinds of towers and different functions.
This more deliberate design means every choice counts since dissembling and repositioning your barriers and defenses takes precious times. It also means you have great flexibility in how your defenses are constructed, especially with how block structures can be connected and built to maximize space. Space management is even more crucial as you mine upgrade crystals and decide where to best utilize them.
Protolife is available for $ 11.99 on Steam.

BattleTech is out to get me. The turn-based tactics game from Harebrained Schemes—the studio that cut its teeth on resurrecting “Nineties Cool” franchises with Shadowrun Returns—has now revived the world of MechWarrior in absolutely savage fashion. The studio’s latest chosen universe blends grounded combat between ostensibly humanoid robots with medieval politics transplanted to the final frontier. It is, to put it mildly, entirely my jam.
Which is exactly why I’ve let BattleTech endlessly brutalize me for the past few weeks.
BattleTech is very difficult, although not in the ways you might expect. The game sets you up as a mercenary in the middle days of the same universe as MechWarrior, but instead of piloting multi-ton titans, the player now assumes the role of a mercenary leader. It’s through the uneven responsibilities of a small, violent business owner that BattleTech challenged me the most.
]]>A mass of metal and gunfire roars across the desert. That’s your battlefield in Road of Dust and Rust. Your group of vehicles outfitted with weapons must outmaneuver and blow away enemy convoys along the roads, roads where other hazards lurk: buildings and structures to smash foes into, dust storms that can send unlucky cars tumbling. But your group is your main and most poweregular tool, especially once they’re armed with flamethrowers, armor, devices for boarding other cars, and more.
Outside of these battles on the procedurally-generated road, you travel the overworld map, where factions war and trade. Your dealings and actions can shift the balance of the wasteland, as you choose which factions to help and learn more about their societies. Die and your future warrior will embark in this persistent world.
Road of Dust and Rust is still in development and doesn’t have a release date at the moment; you can follow its progress and developer Stas Shostak on Steam and Twitter.

Eight prototypes of President Donald Trump’s long-promised border wall stand in San Diego, California, at the Otay Mesa port of entry.
They’re made of concrete, steel, and other materials, and designed to withstand even the most persistent breaching tools and intrepid climbers.
Constructions crews spent roughly a month erecting the prototypes, in the first major step the Trump administration has taken toward fulfilling a January executive order to “immediately plan, design and construct a physical wall along the southern border” which the president signed shortly after taking office.
Then, tactical teams took over. Here’s what happened:

Pogba was substituted for tactical reasons for the first time since his £89million move to Manchester United during their 2-0 defeat by Tottenham, following heated exchanges with Mourinho over his perceived inability to follow instructions.
The France international started alongside Nemanja Matic in the midfield engine room but left his partner and defenders exposed on too many occasions through a lack of defensive discipline and his natural urge to get forward.
As he demonstrated at former club Juventus, Pogba is best used in a more advanced role where he can stretch teams with his pace, power and skill. But with Sanchez now playing on the left side of front man Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial both in good form, up until Wednesday at least, Mourinho is struggling to find room further forward for the club’s record signing.
Several former players were critical of Pogba’s performance against Spurs. Frank Lampard, the ex-Chelsea and England midfielder, said: “Pogba has so many great forward-thinking attributes – athleticism, ability on the ball, can find a pass. But if he’s being asked to do a job next to Nemanja Matic, he has to do that complete responsibility.
“When you’re facing a team where there are lots of threats around you, you have to think ‘what is happening around me?’ Not just when we get the ball.
“He didn’t switch on enough to that and sometimes when the ball went on the other side of him, he doesn’t run back as fast as he runs forward and that’s a big problem.”
Former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder Danny Murphy said: “Pogba is one of the best attacking midfielders in the world but defensively he is reactive rather than proactive. [Phil] Jones and [Chris] Smalling kept getting dragged out because Pogba kept vacating that space next to [Nemanja] Matic and it just caused United all sorts of problems.
“Pogba has been great for United and I prefer him in a more attacking role. In terms of his defensive discipline, it’s not really in his nature.”
Mourinho was last night facing up to another problem because Marouane Fellaini, one of the players who could play a more defensive midfield role, could miss up to two months with knee ligament damage following his ill-fated brief substitute appearance at Wembley.
Fellaini had been on the pitch for only seven minutes when he aggravated an injury that has troubled him since he was last on international duty with Belgium in November.
It is the third setback with the injury in four months and the Manchester United ace had a scan yesterday amid fears that he could be out for another lengthy spell.
The former Everton player is out of contract this summer and could leave on a free transfer after rejecting United’s offer of a new deal. But Mourinho insists there is still a willingness from both parties to agree a contract extension.

No weapon wielded by combat troops during the global conflicts of the 20th century so viscerally embodied the brutality of total war than the flamethrower.
Though an infrequent guest in military arsenals dating back to the ancient Greeks, the first modern-man immolation cannon appeared in hands of German soldiers as the Flammenwerferapparaten during World War I. German troops debuted the weapon in 1915 during a clash with Allied forces near Malancourt, France, during the Battle of Verdun, during which British military leaders reportedly labeled the flamethrower “an inhuman projection of the German scientific mind” — a sinister, sadistic tool of wanton destruction.
But that didn’t stop the flamethrower from entering widespread use during World War II, when the U.S. Army and Marine Corps adopted the variants on the U.S. armed forces’ M1 and M2 flamethrowers, mostly to clear out Japanese troops dug into strategic terrain across the Pacific.
FM 20-33 Combat Flame Operations, the services’ Vietnam-era combat manual for incendiary operations, stated that the flamethrower should be considered “a valuable close combat weapon that can be used to demoralize troops and reduce positions that have resisted other forms of attack,” as Marine Corps Capt. N. T. Perkkio wrote in a 2005 briefing arguing for their return to the battlefield in the wake of the Global War on Terror:
The greatest advantage of the flamethrower is its ability to penetrate small openings and fill fortified positions with both fire and smoke. Thus, the enemy either burns or asphyxiates due to the lack of oxygen available to breathe. In the urban environment, the flamethrower can shoot fire around corners to enhance movement past dead or blind angles. Besides causing death and destruction, the flamethrower can greatly impact an enemy psychologically. According to several historical examples, the enemy normally surrenders before submitting themselves to a flame attack. They would rather be captured than burned.
While the Defense Department ramped up research on both man-portable and vehicle-mounted incendiary weapons following World War II, the system fell into disfavor during the Vietnam War as horrifying imagery like “Napalm Girl” — the 1972 Pulitzer Prize-winning photo of a naked 9-year-old girl fleeing after surviving a napalm attack — turned the American public against incendiary weapons. DoD issued a directive in 1978 effectively retiring the weapon from battlefield use.
“The thought was that, well, flames set people on fire, and we were going through the nice-nice phase of our foreign policy and our national security policy and everybody wanted to be nice,” retired Army Lt. Col. Charles Krohn, a former senior defense official and author of The Lost Battalion of Tet, told Task & Purpose. “Setting people on fire seemed unnecessarily cruel; it was an emotional reaction rather than practical.”
Indeed the flamethrower wasn’t a tactical priority after Vietnam, says Krohn: “Nobody was worried about close combat; we were dealing with Soviets, at a distance, with nukes.”
But the ethical issues regarding the cruelty of the flamethrower doesn’t make its return to the battlefield an impossibility: Although Protocol III of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons bans the use of incendiary weapons against civilians outright, it only prohibits their delivery by air against military targets “located within a concentration of civilians,” suggesting that man-portable incendiary weapons appear permissible when a military objective “is clearly separated from the concentration of civilians and all feasible precautions are taken” to avoid civilian casualties.
“The use of weapons that employ fire, such as tracer ammunition, flamethrowers, napalm, and other incendiary agents, against targets requiring their use is not a violation of international law,” a 2003 Army field manual states. “They should not, however, be employed to cause unnecessary suffering to individuals.”
This means that, tactically, there are several potential applications of the flamethrower to modern counter-terrorism operations. But while the branch considered returning the weapon to the branch’s arsenal for defense purposes in the early years of the Global War on Terror, the enduring notoriety that has followed incendiary weapons since napalm his the battlefields of Vietnam has, to Krohn, deprived combat troops of an essential force protection tool.
US Army
“I have never spoken to an active-duty soldier involved in close combat that wouldn’t want all the protection that science and technology can make available,” he told Task & Purpose.
Krohn would know: During the Tet Offensive, his battalion was surrounded by a North Vietnamese army regiment during the Battle of Huế in February 1968, leaving Krohn as one of the only survivors. Had his team been equipped with an overwhelming, far-reaching incendiary for force protection, he told Task & Purpose, the outcome might have been different.
In The Lost Battalion of Tet, Krohn recalls two simultaneous NVA attacks on U.S. military outposts on Jan. 3, 1968 that both offered lessons in incendiary warfare: LZ Leslie, attacked by NVA fighters outfitted with flamethrowers “with great effectiveness,” overrunning the location after a 12-hour siege and “offering a lesson in terror survivors tend not to forget.” The other, at LZ Ross, resulted in 242 NVA soldiers dead — and only one KIA among U.S. and allied forces.
Why was the defense of Ross more successful than Leslie? According to Krohn, the soldiers at Ross had enhanced their perimeter with a fougasse — an improvised mortar developed by French military engineers — that consisted of 55-gallon drums filled with thickened gasoline. Each drum was filled with rocks and pointed outward along the perimeter, with a wire running from an igniter on the bottom to a fortified safe point. During a prolonged attack on a firebase outside of friendly artillery range, Krohn says, soldiers and Marines would use the fougasse as a last-ditch defense.
“It’s basically napalm blown outward with terribly destructive power,” Krohn told Task & Purpose. “We used it a lot to protect the firebases I wrote about.” For forward operating bases from Vietnam to Afghanistan that are outside artillery range or lack immediate air support, the improvised napalm is a fine defensive stopgap.
“If you want air cover but you don’t always have aircraft or drones in the area, what do you do in the extreme short term?” he said. “You fight like and hell and if they get close to the wire, you blow the fougasse.”

The question facing DoD planners regarding the weapon’s return to the battlefield is meshing tactical practicality with international law surrounding incendiary weapons. Though flamethrowers offer an edge over conventional small arms when going up against a fortified structure like a building or bunker rather than the tunnels of Iwo Jima or caves of Afghanistan, the potential for uncontrollable and indiscriminate collateral damage makes them less-than-ideal for prolonged operations in urban terror strongholds like, say Mosul or Raqqa.
As Krohn put it: “That flame is not the primary killing device. Suffocation is.”
Luckily, service members won’t need to wait long to get your hands on a flamethrower: In the United States, there are zero regulations, licenses, or background checks required for purchasing or operating a civilian-made tool of incendiary chaos in 48 states.
And if all goes according to plan, billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk will have a slick $ 600 model for you just in time for Christmas.
