There will be no musical numbers about COVID when Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist returns for Season 2 on Tuesday, Jan. 5 (NBC, 8/7c).

While many of this fall’s dramas and comedies have addressed the global coronavirus outbreak with significant arcs (see: Grey’s Anatomy) or the occasional mention and mask-wearing (This Is Us), Zoey’s showrunner Austin Winsberg has opted not to incorporate the pandemic into the dramedy’s new season.

“I feel like our show is a musical, and I feel like our show has a spirit of hope and positivity and wish fulfillment in it,” Winsberg explains to TVLine. “And just from minute one, when I started thinking about Season 2, it just didn’t appeal to me to have COVID be a part of this world.”

“I felt, also, like I didn’t want to see a bunch of dance numbers with people with masks on,” Winsberg adds with a laugh.

Plus, given the series’ sometimes weighty and emotional storylines — the upcoming episodes will explore the subject of grief following the death of Zoey’s beloved father — “there are enough challenges and enough complications that, perhaps, we could use some of the feelings that have been happening during the quarantine, and some of the ways people have been trying to carry on and deal with loss, to still talk about a lot of the issues that have come up during this last year, without having to remind people that they’re watching a pandemic show,” Winsberg continues. “I just felt like the show has brought us an opportunity to be a form of escapism. I didn’t want to get stuck in the literalness of what we’re all going through right now.”

That said, Zoey’s will tackle another real-world issue in Episode 6, which deals with systemic racism in Silicon Valley and at Zoey’s workplace, Sprq Point, “in a really, hopefully, deep way,” Winsberg previews. “We brought in a guest choreographer to work with [series choreographer] Mandy [Moore] on the episode, and I’m particularly proud of the musical numbers we do in that episode.”

Facebook is quick to tout its efforts to thwart misinformation campaigns in major European countries and the US, but its approach in other countries might not be quite so enthusiastic. Developers in Moldova told BuzzFeed News that they’d been asking Facebook to address fake news and misinformation in the country for three years before it finally removed the offenders. The Moldovans said they used a browser add-on (Trolless) to generate a database of fake accounts and had been using the official reporting tool to draw attention to them since 2016, but didn’t have any luck until they made direct contact with a Facebook employee in January 2019.

The social network said it had been investigating the misinformation in question (including 168 fake accounts, 28 pages and eight Instagram accounts) since early January, but added that the Trolless developers influenced its decision to remove offenders in February.

The incident isn’t unique: the creator of the French site Hoaxbuster also reported having similar problems getting in touch. The findings suggest that the reporting tool isn’t as effective as it’s supposed to be, and that Facebook appears to prioritize input from its official fact-checking allies over that of independents. That in turn, raises the chances that fake accounts might go unnoticed at crucial moments. In Moldova, for instance, Russian influence campaigns have been present for a long time — there’s a real risk that a bogus Facebook post might succeed where conventional propaganda might fail.

Tonga tackles Australia in a historic rugby league Test.

Rugby league’s rising powerhouse Mate Ma’a Tonga faces Australia in a historic clash at Auckland’s Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday.

Powered by Jason Taumalolo and Andrew Fifita, Tonga became the feel-good story of rugby league when they progressed to last year’s World Cup semi-final.

They have carried that momentum into 2018 by arranging a maiden encounter with world champions Australia, who are smarting after a shock loss last week.

Mal Meninga’s Kangaroos will look to bounce back from that surprise two-point defeat to New Zealand when they meet Tonga for the first time in front of a sold-out Auckland crowd.

Luke Keary is a certain starter for the Kangaroos after recovering from a concussion and training strongly in Friday’s captain’s run.

Meninga said the Sydney Roosters five-eighth had shown leadership qualities during preparations despite being the most inexperienced player in the team.

“He’s obviously disappointed he didn’t finish the game last week,” Meninga said.

“He’s been all about making sure that he’s fit and healthy and that’s really important. At training he’s been terrific. He’s a great leader, to be honest with you.

“He’s played in two premierships already, one with Souths and the Roosters. Obviously there’s something special about him.

“I’m really confident in the footy team and he’s going to make a terrific contribution tomorrow night for us.”

The pressure is on the Kangaroos to avoid back-to-back defeats in the same calendar year for the first time since 1978.

The idea for Ralph Breaks the Internet came shortly after making the first film. Directors Phil Johnston and Rich Moore wanted to revisit this world and these characters, but was there a reason be to make a sequel since the first film wrapped up so nicely? Also remember, Walt Disney Animation Studios doesn’t make many theatrically released sequels. This is the 57th theatrical feature from Disney Animation and only the second intended theatrical sequel in the company’s history (following Fantasia 2000 and to be followed by Frozen 2).

So in order to make a sequel, the idea had to be good enough to convince Disney brass to pull the trigger. Here’s the story of how that idea came about and how the filmmakers behind Zootopia will be tackling another important issue in this sequel.

How Zootopia Changed Ralph

In 2014, Johnston and Moore were developing the earliest ideas for a Ralph sequel with a small team when a non-literal fire broke out elsewhere at the studio. Production on Zootopia was not going smoothly, and like a lot of animated films, the story wasn’t working. However, what made this unusual was that it wasn’t working so late into production. They were a little more than a year away from the film hitting theaters nationwide and Moore was part of the Disney story trust that director Byron Howard turned to for guidance:

“There came a point where like Byron said, that we’re not liking Nick anymore,” Rich told me at the Zootopia junket. “Now he seems sad. Now he seems so oppressed the Jason’s not shining in it. And Ginnifer [Goodwin]‘s character seems kind of ignorant. How could this bunny who’s been raised in this method of collaring people, how do you care about her, she was like the Man. It’s like she never questioned like, is this right? That half of our population wears collars. So there was a big moment kind of a come to Jesus moment of saying like I think we need to try a version without these collars.”

The complete reworking of the film’s plot would require Moore to put down his work on the Ralph sequel and co-direct Zootopia with Howard:

“And that’s when John [Lasseter] asked me and this was in the fall of 2014. And we had about 16 months. In the film’s life it was late. Because parts of it were already in production. So but John said, will you jump on board since you know the movie intimately? Will you jump on and you have a sense of what the task is? Will you jump on? … I was [working on my own project]. And I said, absolutely, because that’s what we do at the studio. That’s if it’s all hands on deck, we put down what we’re doing and come to be to the service of the movie that’s kind of next in the line.”

Moore was pulled over to help save Zootopia and production on Wreck-It Ralph 2 was put on hold until he was able to return. And when he did return following the enormous success of Zootopia, it helped inspire the vision for the movie that became Ralph Breaks the Internet.

The Idea for the Sequel

The idea for the sequel came from a line in the first film. Ralph says “If that kid liked me, how bad can I be?” The line was originally intended to be nothing more than “very sweet sentiment,” but as the filmmakers thought more about it, the concept of the sequel emerged.

They understood that it is a little dysfunctional that Ralph was defining himself based on how others think of him, and what would be the worst place for that type of person? The internet. Ralph’s journey as a person is far from finished and as we’ll find out in this sequel, the same is true of Vanellope.

Even though this is a Disney movie, don’t expect the internet to be all candy-coated. Remember, these are the same filmmakers that tackled Zootopia in a bold, socially-conscious way. Director Rich Moore felt they had a responsibility to talk not just about the good, but also the more complicated parts of the internet.

Modern Family has been on ABC for 10 seasons, and they’ve brought plenty of laughs over the years, even if the series has lost its touch in recent seasons. With no renewal in place for another season, series creator Steve Levitan has hinted that it might be time for the show to end. But before it does, the Dunphy and Pritchett families will deal with some hard times.

Sometime during Modern Family‘s 10th season, a “significant character on the series” will die, and the family will feel the aftermath of that death for several episodes.

Entertainment Weekly spoke to Modern Family co-creator Christopher Lloyd (not the one from Back to the Future), and he revealed the shocking development of death coming to the comedy series this season:

“We’re handling some bigger life events in this season. We do deal with a death, which is certainly a topic that families have to deal with, and on television, it’s not easy to do because that’s a heavy subject. But at the same time, it would seem unusual for a family not to go through it.”

Indeed, while Modern Family is a comedy series,but  every family inevitably has to deal with death at some point. The question is who will this “significant character” be? Lloyd wouldn’t give any hints, but he said this “will be a moving event — and an event that has repercussions across several episodes.”

Does that mean someone from the Dunphy family will pass away? That would be quite the life-changing event for them, especially if the repercussions are felt over several episodes. But then again, it could merely be a prominent recurring character who dies and merely makes some of the characters approach life a little differently, maybe giving them a little bit of a shock.

Perhaps a hint about this death lies in something Lloyd teased about what’s in store for the 10th season. The co-creator said, “There is a significant change in the dynamics of the family that people maybe thought was going to happen at some point down the line that is happening sooner than expected.” Could that possibly mean that Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill) will meet his end, leaving someone in the next generation as the head of the family?

Modern Family Could Go Beyond Season 10

The good news is that even though Modern Family will be dealing with some serious stuff this season, it might not go out on a somber note. Lloyd is optimistic that the show won’t end with the 10th season as has been teased by Steve Levitan:

“There’s goodwill on both sides to make it happen, but there’s also complicated matters that have to get worked through, and there’s a time constraint on it, because we can’t have it take too long. I’m hoping that that doesn’t make the whole thing go away, but I think there’s a decent chance we’ll see it happen. I hope there is.”

With such a large cast, there’s likely a lot of contract negotiation that needs to be done. But Lloyd thinks there’s plenty left to explore with these characters, even after 10 years. “They’re in many ways such different characters than they were five or 10 years ago when we started and they’re just as interesting and just as funny,” Lloyd said. “So our standpoint was, ‘Well, if we can do another season, we may as well. I’m hoping that we have some news on that [soon], and if it winds up that we tried and just couldn’t make it work, we will have a great final season for sure.”
