McDonald’s Szechuan sauce is finally on the fast-food chain’s menu after months of petitions, bidding wars, and riots in fast-food parking lots.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

McDonald’s really pissed off Rick and Morty fans last fall. The fast food chain released limited quantities of their beloved and desired Szechuan dipping sauce that debuted as part of a cross-promotion with Mulan in 1998 after the third season of Rick and Morty made such a big deal out of it. But the quantities were so limited that what was supposed to be a fun promotion turned into a pop culture riot.
After the Szechuan wars resulted in plenty of complaints being thrown at McDonald’s, the fast food chain vowed to make it right by making infinitely more Szechuan sauce available so that everyone could get their hands on it. They vowed to bring back the sauce sometime this winter, and now we know exactly when we can get it.
McDonald’s announced on a new website called “We Want the Sauce” that Szechuan sauce is returning to their restaurants everywhere later this month. If you came away disappointed last time, don’t worry, because starting Monday, February 26, there will be 20 million packets of Szechuan sauce spread across all McDonald’s locations across the United States.
That should be more than enough sauce to satisfy the hunger of Rick and Morty fans. It should be noted that you likely won’t be able to go into a McDonald’s and grab a bunch of sauce packets and leave since the site indicates you’ll only get the sauce “with a qualifying purchase, while supplies last (which this time around, we hope is a while).”
McDonald’s is obviously making a big deal out of bring the sauce back, and that includes documenting the excitement surrounding the sauce and the process of making amends for their shortage last fall. Here’s a tease, which makes this seem like some kind of NPR story:
If you find yourself wanting to know more about the sauce, there are three podcast episodes chronicling its journey:
If you’re not the kind of person who listens to podcasts in your web browser, they’re available on a bunch of other podcasting platforms as well.

Over the weekend, Rick and Morty fans had the opportunity to do what Rick Sanchez has been unable to do on the series so far: get their hands on the limited edition Szechuan sauce that was released by McDonald’s in 1998 as a cross-promotion with Disney’s Mulan. It seems like a clever enough promotion by McDonald’s, but they were woefully unprepared for the demand from Rick and Morty fans for the coveted sauce.
Find out about the McDonald’s Szechuan sauce shortage below.
io9 rounded up the experiences that some unhappy fans had over the weekend as they tried to get ahold of the Szechuan sauce. McDonald’s locations had hundreds of fans show up to get their hands on some sauce, but the amount available was even more limited than many thought.
First of all, the sauce was only available in tiny packets, the same that ketchup usually comes in. McDonald’s locations received anywhere from 20 sauce packets to 70 sauce packets, which was nowhere near enough to satisfy the appetite of Rick and Morty fans. The limited edition posters were even less abundant. Nice job, Jerry.

Even in the less populated areas, demand was infinitely higher than what was available. Here in the Midwest, I intended to make an attempt at getting some of the sauce, but roughly 300 people showed up to the location in South Bend, Indiana and there were only 20 sauce packets available and two Szechuan sauce posters made available.
While it was troubling to hear reports that some McDonald’s employees were trying to sell the sauce under the table, that wasn’t nearly as upsetting as the fact that some bad apples felt this was a big enough problem to start fights, with some locations having police involved in the fallout that followed.
McDonald’s heard how angry Rick and Morty fans were, and they responded online with this tweet:
You spoke. We’ve listened. Lots more #SzechuanSauce and locations. Details soon. And that’s the wayyy the news goes! pic.twitter.com/ooIrbZBsOw

So if you didn’t get your hands on Szechuan sauce this past weekend, you’ll get your chance this winter, and you won’t have to wait in line with hundreds of other people to get your hands on it (or pay stupid amounts of money to get it). Winter may be a couple months away, but at least it’s not nine seasons away.

The third season premiere of Rick and Morty got everyone talking about the Mulan Szechuan sauce that McDonald’s once had during a 1998 cross-promotion with the Disney animated movie. McDonald’s had to deal with a petition signed by thousands asking them to bring it back after Rick revealed his life’s goal was to get the sauce back, no matter how many seasons it took him. But rather than satisfying everybody by reviving the sauce at their restaurants, the fast food chain decided to keep things a bit lower key by sending a big bottle to series co-creator Justin Roiland.
As the letter that accompanied the mythical sauce indicated, it was just the first bottle they were sending out, and a few other fans would have to chance to dip chicken nuggets in this precious condiment soon enough. It turns out McDonald’s gave away three more bottles of the sauce to fans who retweeted them during the return of the third season a couple weeks ago. One of the recipients decided that selling the elixir was better than dipping some Chicken McNuggets in it. So how much did the Mulan Szechuan sauce sell for? Find out below.
For those who missed it, here’s what McDonald’s posted on Twitter a little while back:

The numbers were the date and time of the return of Rick and Morty‘s third season on Adult Swim. Three fans ended up with the sauce brought back by McDonald’s own Chef Mike, but it was writer Robert Workman who decided to auction his off on eBay. He wrote on the auction page (via io9):
“I hold McDonald’s and Chef Mike in the highest respect. I really do. Mike has done an amazing job bringing this back for some lucky people to enjoy and I will do everything in my power to assure that it’s in the hands of someone that will truly enjoy it with a party of people, instead of just letting it rot away on a shelf for all to see. The point of this sauce is for people to enjoy it – not necessarily me, but whoever ends up with it.”
The auction had 111 bids total, including the famous DJ known as Deadmau5, and the final price landed at $ 15,350. Before you get mad at Robert Workman for selling such a savory prize, he did indicate that “10-percent of proceeds are going to Extra Life and at least another 10-percent will go to other charities like AbleGamers.” So that’s pretty cool.
As for the other winners? Well, one of them has resorted to selling about half of the bottle on eBay, and it’s currently sitting at $ 799 at the time of this writing with only 11 bids and 6 days left to get involved. The third winner seems to be holding on to their prize. Outside of those winners, there appears to be a stranger listing for another Rick and Morty package involving Szechuan sauce and there’s quite a story to go along with it.
It’s good to hear that some fans get to taste that delicious sauce again. Here’s hoping this is just the start of McDonald’s giving fans something they’re desperate for and the sauce will make a comeback sometime in the near future.

eBay
One of the few jugs of McDonald’s Szechuan sauce in existence is being auctioned off for thousands of dollars on eBay.
In April, Adult Swim aired the first new episode of “Rick and Morty” since 2015. The episode ended with a plea from mad scientist Rick for McDonald’s to bring back its Szechuan McNugget sauce, a plum sauce that was available for a limited time in 1998 to promote the Disney movie “Mulan.”
After the episode aired, “Rick and Morty” fans began demanding that McDonald’s actually bring back the sauce. Last week, the fast-food chain did just that, sending the creators of “Rick & Morty” a jug of the Szechuan McNugget sauce and launching a giveaway for three other jugs.
Now, one of the lucky recipients of the sauce is selling his jug on eBay to raise money for charity.
As of Monday at noon, bidding had reached $ 4,050.

Here goes nothing. #szechuansauce auction is live! Thanks, Dark_Falcon! https://t.co/8lL39pd7v2
“The auction includes a NEW, SEALED 64 oz. bottle of the special sauce (which isn’t being made right now, so it’s VERY rare), along with a special Rick and Morty inspired Pelican camera case, which houses the sauce,” the eBay description reads. “Both items are BRAND NEW, and there are only four of these made!”
One of the people bidding on the sauce is apparently DJ deadmau5, who tweeted on Sunday: “am i really in the middle of a bidding war over a 64oz bottle of Szechuan Sauce? yes. i am.”

am i really in the middle of a bidding war over a 64oz bottle of Szechuan Sauce? yes. i am.
The sauce in question is being sold by Robert “DCD” Workman, who says he plans to use the money to pay some bills and donate the rest to charity.
“I hold McDonald’s and Chef Mike in the highest respect. I really do,” Workman wrote in the eBay description. “Mike has done an amazing job bringing this back for some lucky people to enjoy and I will do everything in my power to assure that it’s in the hands of someone that will truly enjoy it with a party of people, instead of just letting it rot away on a shelf for all to see.”
The auction will close at 6:24 p.m. on Thursday, so there’s plenty of time for deadmau5 and other “Rick and Morty” fans to get in their bids — if they’re willing to spend a few thousand dollars.

Tonight brings the highly anticipated continuance of the third season of Rick and Morty after the season premiere caught everyone off guard on April Fools’ Day earlier this year. And just in time for the return of the Adult Swim animated series, co-creator Justin Roiland, who also voices both of the title characters, got a special package from McDonald’s.
If you watched the first episode of the third season, then you know that Rick revealed to Morty that his life’s goal is to get back the limited edition Szechuan sauce that McDonald’s released as a cross-promotion for the release of Disney’s animated movie Mulan. Since then, there have been rumblings that McDonald’s might actually bring it back, and Roiland himself said the fast food chain promised to send him a batch of it in the near future, after he himself made some desperate attempts to track it down himself. Well, the future is now. Justin Roiland has received McDonald’s Szechuan sauce. See it in all its glory below.
Here’s the tweet Justin Roiland posted last night with the Mulan Szechuan sauce in hand:
Holy shit. pic.twitter.com/vNEIfHTmNU
— Justin Roiland (@JustinRoiland) July 30, 2017
Pay special attention to the note that came with it, which says:
Justin,
We finally did it. It took months but we’ve finally brought back some Szechuan sauce.
We’ll spare you the physics, but it turns out, Dimension C1998M is a dimension where it’s always 1998 . 1998 everyday. No smartphones, no social media . it’s a weird and scary place but they’ve got Szechuan sauce on the regular menu.
So here we are with some precious cargo – the Szechuan sauce you remember and some sou-venirs from some of he dimensions we tried along the way.
We wish we could’ve brought more sauce through, but we couldn’t risk keeping a portal like that open. Think about it, if you knew in 1998 that McDonald’s would have All Day Breakfast in 2017 would you really want to stay in 1998? Of course not. If we left the portal open we’d have puka shells, bucket hats and boy bands as far as the eye could see. It’s too risky even for sauce as delicious as this.
A few lucky fans will also get to experience the glory, but the first bottle in this dimension is for you.
Stay Schwifty,
Chef Mike
First of all, I love McDonald’s dedication to the gag by saying they got this out of another dimension. Plus, you have to admire how they get a little advertising in there by reminding everyone they have all-day breakfast menu items now, something that really would blow the minds of everyone in 1998.
But the most important part is where it says, “A few lucky fans will also get to experience the glory…” What does that mean? Is McDonald’s bringing back the sauce for a limited time again? If that were the case, you would think they would have chosen their words more carefully to get people more excited. But I’m thinking that the note saying “a few lucky fans” indicates there might be some kind of contest in the future where fans can win an entire bottle like this.
With thousands of fans petitioning for the sauce to return, hopefully McDonald’s does more than bring back a handful of bottles, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens. Plus, Justin Roiland said that he and co-creator Dan Harmon would post a video of them trying the sauce, so we have that to look forward to.
Otherwise, Rick and Morty season 3 continues tonight on Adult Swim tonight at 11:30pm ET.

With all the hullabaloo of San Diego Comic-Con, there’s so much to see and do that we don’t even have time to cover every single show we love. One of the programs that fell by the wayside for us over the weekend was Adult Swim’s incredible animated series Rick and Morty. It’s one of my favorite shows on TV right now and it killed me to miss it since the /Film crew had so much more to cover.
Thankfully, the internet is a helpful place, and you can pretend that you were at Comic-Con yourself by catching up on all the big updates that came from the Rick and Morty panel. That includes a new sneak peek behind the scenes of an episode that will take the titular duo to the Wasteland of Mad Max, details on some of the guest stars coming this season, and the triumph of co-creator Justin Roiland finally getting his hands on the retired McDonald’s Mulan Szechuan sauce.
Find out all the new details about Rick and Morty season 3 below.
Watch this sneak peek at “Rickmancing the Stone”, the second episode of Rick and Morty season 3 from Adult Swim:
As Dan Harmon says in the featurette, this episode primarily takes place in a “diesel-powered, vehicular field of death and nihilism.” And rather than phoning in certain details, it seems like the animators and character designers really gave 110% when it comes to creating a world that isn’t entirely unlike the Wasteland from the world of the Mad Max franchise. The only difference seems to be that this version of the Wasteland began to manifest itself in the 1990s, as illustrated in the design of the various extras in the episode’s setting.
Rick and Morty has always had twisted versions of pop culture settings and characters that geeks are familiar with, so this is right in line with their brand. The most fun, of course, will be finding out what Rick and Morty (and Summer) did to piss these people off.
Though details are sparse when it comes to the stories we can expect from Rick and Morty this season, co-creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon revealed some of the guest stars who would be popping up throughout the season.
During a conversation with IndieWire (which you can watch right here), the two rattled off the names Thomas Middleditch, Susan Sarandon, Danny Trejo, Christian Slater and Peter Serafinowicz. There will also be two Community cast members reuniting with Dan Harmon, with Gillian Jacobs and Joel McHale lending their voice to the third season. Plus, Keith David will be back as the President of the United States.
In the surprise third season premiere of Rick and Morty that debuted on April Fools Day earlier this year, we found out that the driving force of Rick’s madness may be getting his hands on a certain limited edition condiment, the Mulan-themed Szechuan sauce that was available at McDonald’s back in 1998. It turns out that’s something that Justin Roiland has been obsessed with getting his hands on too.
During the Comic-Con panel for the series last Friday (via The Huffington Post), Roiland revealed that he’s been on the hunt to get the sauce back in his hands for nearly 20 years now. He said, “I heard they had a limited batch at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Canada,” Roiland told reporters. “I called every McDonald’s in L.A. and went online. I even might have tried to connect with people in Canada to see if they could mail it to me and that failed.”
But Roiland is about to achieve his goal, because McDonald’s reached out to him and said they were going to send him a jug of the Szechuan sauce in the near future. Roiland will also livestream a tasting session with him and Harmon to capture any potential disappointment that may result from tasting the sauce again.
There’s a chance Roiland may not be the only one having that sauce again, because McDonald’s previously said they would consider bringing it back after Rick and Morty sparked renewed interest and demand for the sauce. With a live-action Mulan movie just around the corner, there will be a big promotional opportunity to make it happen, but let’s hope fans won’t have to wait that long.
Speaking of waiting, if you can’t wait until the third season premiere of Rick and Morty at the end of the month, maybe this little video will hold you over. It features a variety of animation styles as Rick and Morty find themselves traveling across the multiverse, and it’s basically a trippy music video set to the instrumental version of “Thursday in the Danger Room” by Run the Jewels. Matt Taylor is the director behind this wild video.
Finally, for those who really want to pretend like they were at Comic-Con, you can watch the entire panel that the show put on in San Diego over the weekend. As usual, it features hilarious banter between Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, and you just might learn a thing or two about the upcoming third season debuting on Adult Swim on Sunday, July 30th at 11:30pm ET/PT.

This past weekend, Adult Swim surprised everyone on April Fools’ Day by debuting the long-awaited third season premiere to Rick and Morty, both online and on Cartoon Network. It was a welcome return for the brilliant animated comedy series, though it has caused some debate among fans as to whether what is actually going on in the episode (you can find out more about that here). But beyond having fans coming up with theories about the direction of the show, there was one other way Rick and Morty worked fans into a frenzy.
In the episode, we learn that Rick has a potentially unhealthy affinity for a special Szechuan sauce that was given out with McDonald’s chicken nuggets for a limited time as part of a cross-promotion with the release of Mulan back in 1998. Despite demands by fans in various petitions online over the years, the sauce has remained hidden away. However, it sounds like there’s a chance its appearance in Rick and Morty may have convinced the fast food chain to bring it back.
First of all, for those who many not be familiar with the Mulan Szechuan sauce promotion, here you go:
The Rick and Morty Mulan Szechuan sauce obsession has only reinvigorated those who remember the Szechuan sauce, and the official Twitter account for the Adult Swim show even took their love of the condiment to McDonald’s itself:
@RickandMorty .@RickandMorty McNugga Lubba Dub Dub. ????
— McDonald's (@McDonalds) April 2, 2017
The fact that the fast food chain responded so enthusiastically (despite what “wubba lubba dub dub” really means) was encouraging. Then one fan took the demand for Szechuan sauce to McD Truth, a McDonald’s blog that provides inside information and insight about the company’s marketing and direction.
In turn, they called out corporate chef Mike Haracz, who creates food for McDonald’s, to see if getting the sauce recipe off the shelf was possible. He responded (via Business Insider):
@McD_Truth @AshleyLutz I'll see what I can do
— Mike Haracz (@Mike_Haracz) April 3, 2017
The timing of this resurgence of demand for McDonald’s Szechuan sauce may be just a tad too early, though. The best time for the nugget dipping sauce to return to would be sometime next year, when Disney’s live-action adaptation of Mulan comes to theaters on November 2, 2018. Of course, I’m sure fans won’t be mad if McDonald’s brings it back before that just for the hell of it.
If this reference from Rick and Morty can get McDonald’s to revive the Szechuan sauce, that would be quite the feat. Maybe they can start inserting references to other forgotten junk food like Dunkaroos, Nintendo cereal, Squeez-Its, Cookies n Cream Twix, Black Cherry Vanilla Coca-Cola and more.
