The launch was to be the start of the Artemis I mission, in which the rocket would carry the uncrewed Orion spacecraft on its mission around the moon. But a liquid hydrogen fuel leak meant the launch had to be scrubbed.

The leak was first observed this morning, Saturday, September 3, when the rocket’s tanks were being filled with liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen which act as fuel for the launch. There was a leak in the liquid hydrogen line which connected to the rocket’s core stage, requiring the tanking to be halted.

“The launch director waived off today’s Artemis I launch attempt at approximately 11:17 a.m. EDT,” NASA wrote in an update. “Teams encountered a liquid hydrogen leak while loading the propellant into the core stage of the Space Launch System rocket. Multiple troubleshooting efforts to address the area of the leak by reseating a seal in the quick disconnect where liquid hydrogen is fed into the rocket did not fix the issue. Engineers are continuing to gather additional data.”

Launch director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson declared the launch a “no-go” at just after 11 a.m. ET (8 a.m. PT) this morning. The teams had tried several options to stop the leak, including warming up the quick disconnect in the hope it would reseal, to using helium to add pressure to the line to try to reseal it. But none of the attempts fully stopped the leak, so the launch was called off when the liquid oxygen tank was 100% full and the liquid hydrogen tank was 11% full.

Now, the tanks will have to be drained of propellants before another launch attempt can be made. If the leak issue can be fixed in time, there is another launch opportunity for the rocket on Monday, September 5.

Housing, Communities and Local Government Secretary, Robert Jenrick, warned what could happen if people refuse to abide by the post-lockdown tier system. While speaking with Naga Munchetty on BBC Breakfast, he said the tier systems were designed to drive the rate of infection down. He added that while coronavirus vaccines were coming, it was still imperative the public followed the rules.

He claimed that if this tier system fails, the country could see another blanket lockdown implemented in order to stop the spread of the virus.

Ms Munchetty said: “What the public is hearing today is a lot of MPs, from both sides of the house and many from the Conservative Party, are furious.

“These MPs are furious about being put into tier 3 or tier 2 at this moment in time.

“They believe the system isn’t fair and we have discussed why that is the case and how the Government has come to its decision on region-wide allocation for tiers.

“Do you think the public is going to comply?”

Mr Jenrick replied that he was hopeful people would due to the importance of driving the rate of infection down.

He said: “I certainly hope so because I think most people would agree that we want to have a localised approach.

“We don’t want to see another blanket national lockdown so the tiered approach needs to be allowed to succeed.

“It is better that we are a little bit cautious where we place areas into the tiers so that then, with an effort, they can be de-escalated rather than having to rise up the tiers as we seeing earlier on in the year.”

Mr Jenrick insisted that the UK could see an optimistic 2021 if the rules are followed and the vaccines are successfully rolled out. 

He said: “What is different now, to just a few weeks ago is all the good news on the vaccine front.

“We can all see there is very much light at the end of the tunnel, there is likely to be vaccines in circulation and people being vaccinated before the end of the year and that will rise quite rapidly into next year. 

“The effort for us all as a country now is to make the tiered system work for the period we have got left until the vaccines start to be rolled out to a significant proportion of the population.” 

Health Secretary Matt Hancock on Thursday announced what tiers each part of the country would be put into after lockdown. 

This has resulted in significant backlash but he noted that the tiers in areas will be reviewed after two weeks and there is a possibility some areas will go down in tiers before the Christmas period.

Those tuned into Sunday’s BET Awards got a first glimpse at Amazon’s Free Meek, a new docuseries that “chronicles Meek Mill’s fight for exoneration in his legal case while exposing the broader flaws of the U.S. criminal justice system.”

Free Meek — which counts Jay Z among its executive producers — was borne from Meek Mill’s November 2017 arrest. The rapper was sentenced to two-to-four years in prison after he was arrested for popping a wheelie in New York City. Although that charge was ultimately dismissed, Judge Genece Brinkley sent him to prison in Pennsylvania for other technical probation violations, marking the second time she incarcerated him for probation violations.

When he was released on bail in April 2018, the groundswell of support inspired Meek Mill to partner with leaders in the sports, entertainment and business realms to establish the REFORM Alliance, an organization that is committed to eliminating laws and policies that perpetuate injustice in America.

Free Meek follows the case as “Meek, his family and his legal team fight for his freedom,” per to the official logline. “The cameras capture the birth of the #FREEMEEK movement, the launch of the REFORM Alliance and the re-investigation of a case filled with allegations of dirty cops, planted evidence and systemic corruption within a broken judicial system.”

Google’s Nest smart home brand is in hot water this week after news surfaced (via Daring Fireball) that its home security system, Nest Secure, shipped with an undisclosed microphone. Google activated the microphone earlier this month for Google Assistant functionality, but that meant the device sat in users’ homes for up to a year as an unknown potential listening device.

Nest Secure launched last year as a $ 500 home security system. It’s just a collection of door, window, and motion sensors, along with a small desktop box that acts as a hub for the devices and a security code keypad. It has a speaker for alarms and other sounds, but it isn’t something you would ever expect to have a microphone.

Google gave a statement to Business Insider yesterday, saying, “The on-device microphone was never intended to be a secret and should have been listed in the tech specs. That was an error on our part.” According to the company, “the microphone has never been on and is only activated when users specifically enable the option.”

One is the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), which came into effect on December 30th. Negotiated as the TPP between 12 countries and agreed between 11, after President Donald Trump pulled America out, the deal will phase out tariffs on frozen potato chips and mashed potato, benefiting Lamb Weston’s Canadian rivals. And another trade deal, between the European Union and Japan, to be implemented on February 1st, will do the same for its European ones.
