President Trump and his family visited Pittsburgh with Israel’s US envoy to honor the victims of Saturday’s synagogue shooting. They were met with massive protests and even congressional leaders declined to join them on the trip.

The president and his family flew to Pittsburgh to pay their respects to the dead, accompanied by Israeli ambassador to the US, Ron Dermer. No congressional leaders were willing to join the Trumps on the trip, after Pittsburgh mayor Bill Peduto suggested they postpone their visit.

Saturday’s shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh’s Squirrel Hill neighborhood left 11 dead and six wounded. The attacker, Robert Bowers, allegedly uttered anti-Semitic slurs and made reference to genocide as he opened fire. The Anti-Defamation League called it the deadliest attack on Jews in US history.

The city’s resources were stretched thin attempting to provide security for both the presidential visit and the funerals, and Mayor Peduto asked Trump to wait until after the victims were buried to pay his respects but, faced with a packed rally schedule leading up to an election in which he’s not actually running, Trump opted to do what was best for Trump.

A crowd of protesters estimated at 2,000 and organized by Jewish groups IfNotNow and Bend the Arc massed in Squirrel Hill, marching behind a series of banners demanding the president ‘fully denounce white nationalism’ – something of a non-sequitur, given that the shooter had expressed his antipathy toward Trump as well as his hatred for Jews in social media posts – and end policies that target minorities, immigrants and refugees. The streets were also full of mourners waiting to get into three of the victims’ funerals.

Not everyone in Pittsburgh was upset to see Trump. Rabbi Jeffrey Myers, who was conducting Shabbat services at the time of the attack, welcomed the president’s visit, ushering the Trumps and Dermer into the synagogue to light candles for the dead. Trump also visited first responders and met with Peg Durachko Gottfried, the widow of one of the victims.

Opportunists on both sides wasted no time politicizing the shooting. Trump suggested an armed guard could have saved the worshipers, while Democrats blamed the president’s “dog-whistle rhetoric” for inciting anti-Semitic violence and Republicans scrambled to ask for the death penalty for Bowers. Nor was the opportunism confined to the US – Israeli Labor party leader Avi Gabbay crassly used the tragedy to illustrate why US Jews should move to Israel.

Eleven people were killed and six others were injured when a gunman armed with an AR-15 and handguns stormed the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh on Saturday.

When police rushed the synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood, they were met with gunfire.

The suspect, Robert Bowers, was eventually taken into custody and reportedly told one police officer: “All these Jews need to die.”

The shooting is believed to be the deadliest attack on Jewish people in US history, according to a statement the Anti-Defamation League.

Here’s how the shooting unfolded:

Saturday, October 27, 9:49 a.m.: An anti-Semitic comment was posted on a social media account for suspected gunman Robert Bowers.

Just before the attack on Saturday morning, a post was shared on social media connected to Robert Bowers.

Bowers, the suspected shooter, was reportedly a frequent poster on Gab, a relatively new social network that has attracted many far-right supporters.

“HIAS likes to bring invaders in that kill our people,” Bowers wrote just before the shooting, according to an archive of his Gab posts. “I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I’m going in.”

9:54 a.m.: Allegheny County Emergency Operations Center received a 911 call about an active shooter.

The call into the Allegheny County Emergency Operations Center came just five minutes after Bowers’ social media post on Gab.

9:55 a.m.: Two police cars were dispatched to the Tree of Life synagogue.

The police officers were told that one 911 caller had reported 20-30 shots heard from the lobby, according to radio traffic posted by Broadcastify. 

Several other nearby officers said they were also responding, CNN reported.

Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania, Scott Brady, said that he had launched a necessary legal procedure so the prosecutors are able to proceed with the maximum possible penalty in the case of Bowers, who has been charged with 29 criminal counts for the murder of 11 people at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Brady is seeking authorization from Sessions to pursue with death penalty, AP reported.

Per US law, each federal death penalty case must be authorized by the AG upon consultation with local attorneys. 

Brady said that the investigation has been in full swing and multiple search warrants have been issued as law enforcers aim to unearth all circumstances behind the carnage.

Bowers is set to appear in court for the first time on Monday.

Bowers, 46, entered the synagogue armed with an AR-15 rifle and a Glock pistol during the Saturday service. Before going on the rampage, Bowers posted an anti-Semitic message on social network Gab, popular with right-wing activists, extremist and neo-fascists. Bowers’ feed on Gab was filled with anti-Semitic slurs, as well as insults directed US President Donald Trump, who he believed was surrounded by “too many” Jews. Bowers claimed that he did not vote for Trump.

The synagogue massacre as well as the failed mail bomb plot by Trump supporter Cesar Sayoc, who sent 14 explosive devices – none of which worked – to high-profile Democrats, have further polarized the already volatile pre-midterm environment in the US.

The Muslim-American community has raised more than $ 50,000 for the victims of the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting that left at least 11 people dead and six injured.

The ‘Muslims Unite for Pittsburgh Synagogue’ campaign, hosted by the Muslim crowdfunding site LaunchGood, aimed to raise funds to support the shooting victims with funeral expenses and medical bills.

The original goal was to raise $ 25,000 for the victims and their families, but was increased to $ 50,000 after just six hours of overwhelming support. That goal was surpassed on Sunday, just one day after it began.

The campaign was launched by Tarek El-Messidi, a Muslim-American speaker and founder of a non-profit organization called CelebrateMercy, which “teaches about the Prophet Muhammad’s life and character to Muslims and the general public.”

On Sunday, US authorities released the names of the 11 victims killed by suspected gunman Robert Bowers, including a husband and wife couple, and two brothers. The victims range in age from 54 to 97. Six other people, including four police officers, were injured during the October 27 incident.

Bowers, who is being treated for gunshot wounds at hospital, faces 29 counts of federal charges over the murder of the worshippers, including hate crimes and illegal use of firearms.

Three or four police officers were injured in a standoff with the attacker.

At the rally, Trump called the carnage “a monstrous killing” and thanked the officers for apprehending the suspect.

This evil anti-Semitic attack is an assault on all of us, it’s an assault on humanity.

The president doubled down on his earlier call for capital punishment for the attacker.

“When you have crimes like this, we’ll have to bring back the death penalty. They have to pay the ultimate price,” he said. In wake of the deadly shooting, Trump said that the US government “should stiffen up” laws, so it can bring perpetrators of such heinous acts to due justice.

Denouncing the “scourge of anti-Semitism,” Trump vowed to “seek destruction” for those who perpetrate it.

Through the centuries the Jews have endured the terrible persecution, they’ve gone through a lot, and those seeking their destruction, we will seek their destruction

Earlier, Attorney General Jeff Sessions did not rule out a death sentence for  Bowers. The suspect faces hate crime and other criminal charges, “including charges that could lead to the death penalty,” Sessions said in a statement.

The synagogue shooter posted his anti-Semitic slurs on the social network Gab, calling Jews the “children of Satan” on his now-deleted page. Right before the shooting, Bowers reportedly posted that he was “going in.” Judging by his other posts, reported by the New York Times, Bowers was not a fan of Trump. He labelled Trump, a self-proclaimed nationalist, “a globalist, not a nationalist.”

“There is no #MAGA, as long as there is a k— infestation,” Bowers reportedly wrote, using a denigrating term for Jews.

The attack comes just a day after police apprehended suspected mail bomber Cesar Sayoc, 56, who sent crude pipe bombs to prominent Trump critics, including former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, billionaire George Soros and several lawmakers.

None of the bombs went off, but the FBI said that the explosive devices were not dummies. Trump’s opponents and some mainstream media argued that the president should bear responsibility for the scare, as Sayoc, dubbed “MAGAbomber” on Twitter, was his avid supporter.
