“Beauty is truth, truth beauty” wrote English poet John Keats in 1819. “That is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.” For creative directors Hazel Baird and Heidi Berg, however, Keats’s eternal chiasmus is incomplete; their truth is so much more. In their opening to Semi-Permanent Sydney 2019, Truth is a savior and a shadow, a creator and a cannibal, a phantasmagoria pieced together by a wide-ranging crew and bursting with darkness, colour, and inspiration.

In 2018, when creative director Joyce N. Ho emailed Semi-Permanent organizer Murray Bell to inquire about the opening titles for the well-known festival, it seemed like a shot in the dark. But it was also a bellwether, a sign of things to come. Ho’s titles were a smashing success. She also became the first woman in the festival’s nearly 20-year history to helm its opening titles. Fast forward one year and another gorgeous opening for Semi-Permanent has emerged—and with a similar genesis.

The shape-shifting, media-melding titles for the 2019 edition of the festival come care of Baird, Berg, a team of animators and designers at LA-based studio Elastic (Game of Thrones, True Detective, Westworld), and several far-flung collaborators. After reading about the process behind the 2018 titles and learning that Ho had thrown her own hat into the ring, Elastic design director Hazel Baird decided to do the same. Baird reached out to Bell and landed the gig. What came next is eight months of rigorous after-hours work, a host of stops and starts, soul-searching and soundscaping, cel animating and CGI, and, eventually, a stunning piece of motion design. The finished product brings together a wide range of influences, stirring together body horror and Greek myth, grim sculptural forms and noisy, saturated illustrations. It is a testament to the importance of knowledge sharing, the beauty of collaboration, and the power of asking for what you want. Sometimes, the most vital step to achieving a goal is having the courage to ask.

A discussion with Creative Directors HAZEL BAIRD and HEIDI BERG.

First, congratulations on this piece! Tell me a little about how this project started.

Hazel: I emailed Murray around November of [2018] to ask if he wanted to do the titles with Elastic and he was really happy about it and excited. I’ve been here at Elastic for a couple of years and I got to know Heidi quite well. I didn’t want to do it on my own. I thought we would do a good job together so I asked her to help out.

Heidi: Hazel sent me a…

Five things you didn’t know about the Sydney to Hobart fleet https://briefnews.eu/five-things-you-didnt-know-about-the-sydney-to-hobart-fleet/ https://briefnews.eu/five-things-you-didnt-know-about-the-sydney-to-hobart-fleet/#respond Tue, 25 Dec 2018 14:39:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/five-things-you-didnt-know-about-the-sydney-to-hobart-fleet/ With the Sydney to Hobart race set to dominate our conversations, here are a few facts to get you up to speed for your next barbecue.

1. Winning the Sydney to Hobart is about going as fast as possible at all times, right?

Wrong. Today’s competitors sail so fast that for many crews slowing the boats to keep the boat and the people on board safe is a key part of the race, particularly in upwind conditions in Bass Strait.

2. On today’s elite competitors the boat, masts and sails are all made from the same material, correct?

Yes, the major components are all made from carbon fibre, which is why so many of the sails in the fleet are black. The hull, mast and sails are all made using carbon fibres infused with different resins that create a solid hull and mast but a flexible cloth for the sails.

3. Competitors will be disqualified if they sue their engines, right?

Wrong. In the larger boat the winches that are used to hoist and adjust the sails are now powered by motors not human muscle power. This means these boats run their engines during the race to keep the powered winches operating. Using motors to run a propeller is of course forbidden.

4. Is it possible to complete the race in less than 24 hours?

Maybe. IDV Comanche has sailed 618 nautical miles in a single day and the Hobard race is 630 nautical miles. To complete the race in less than 24 hours a yacht would have to average speeds of around 50 kilometres per hour. Conditions would have to be perfect for the one day benchmark to be broken.

5. The big 100 foot yachts at the front of the Hobart fleet are the Formula Ones of ocean sailing, right?

Not really. In recent years huge multi-hill yachts and smaller, world circling monohull boats have developed hydrofoils that allow them to lift their hulls out of the water and literally fly. These yachts are not yet permitted to compete in the Sydney to Hobart.

’South Sydney choked’: Broncos great says CEO should be fired if Seibold fails https://briefnews.eu/south-sydney-choked-broncos-great-says-ceo-should-be-fired-if-seibold-fails/ https://briefnews.eu/south-sydney-choked-broncos-great-says-ceo-should-be-fired-if-seibold-fails/#respond Mon, 29 Oct 2018 04:01:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/south-sydney-choked-broncos-great-says-ceo-should-be-fired-if-seibold-fails/ LIVID Brisbane great Chris Johns has slammed Paul White’s handling of the NRL club’s coaching transition, saying the Broncos CEO should be “marched” if new mentor Anthony Seibold is not a success.

Seibold is set to be officially confirmed as Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett’s successor from 2020 at a Broncos board meeting on Tuesday night ahead of fellow candidates Kevin Walters and Jason Demetriou.

Two-time Broncos premiership winner Johns was gobsmacked that Brisbane had overlooked Walters and replaced South Sydney-bound Bennett with an “unproven coach”, saying White should go if the move was not successful.

Seibold is set to link with Brisbane from 2020 after steering South Sydney to the 2018 NRL preliminary final and earning Dally M Coach of the Year honours in his rookie season.

Bennett has committed to next year with Brisbane after signing a two-season deal with the Rabbitohs from 2020 but has not ruled out being asked to leave a year early by the Broncos board.

“Seibold is an unproven coach. South Sydney were one of the favourites to win the premiership and they choked but everyone is walking around saying he is the (Broncos’) heir apparent,” Johns told AAP.

“Look at Kev’s record. Everywhere he has coached he has had success.

“I can’t believe the decision they have made. If we don’t get success in the next few years Paul White should be the one marched.”

Johns was angry that Walters was not only brushed for the top job but also accused the Broncos of being disrespectful to their former premiership-winning skipper during the coaching interview process.

Johns even accused Brisbane of making up their mind about signing Seibold months ago.

“They have used him up. They have put a sham of a process together to put someone who is pre-ordained to go in there,” Johns said of Walters.

“Three committee members flew straight to Sydney to talk to Seibold then when they came back and went through the process with Kev, (director) Darren Lockyer wasn’t even going to go to the interview.

“That’s how much importance they put into that interview.

“Kev is the perfect fit. So what is the agenda? Why is Seibold ahead of Kev?”

Johns said Seibold and seven-time premiership winner Bennett should swap ahead of the 2019 season otherwise the next year would be a “circus”.

“You’ve now got the South Sydney coach thinking about what is going to happen with the Broncos and vice-versa, it’s absolute idiocy,” Johns said.

“(South Sydney football manager) Shane Richardson is no dummy, he grabbed Bennett and said ‘wow I have one of the greatest coaches of all time charting the club’s future.

“The Broncos threw that away for reasons I don’t know.”

Sydney star impresses, draws perfectly for Guineas https://briefnews.eu/sydney-star-impresses-draws-perfectly-for-guineas/ https://briefnews.eu/sydney-star-impresses-draws-perfectly-for-guineas/#respond Tue, 09 Oct 2018 00:26:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sydney-star-impresses-draws-perfectly-for-guineas/ CAULFIELD Guineas favourite The Autumn Sun “ticked all the boxes” in his first gallop at the track on Tuesday morning and is full steam ahead for Saturday’s $ 2 million Group 1 race, according to master trainer Chris Waller.

The star colt, who won the Golden Rose in devastating fashion last start, worked alongside stablemate D’Argento in a gallop down the Caulfield straight, and importantly had no issue with the track.

“(He was) perfect,” a delighted Chris Waller said of the $ 2 Caulfield Guineas favourite who will start from barrier five.

“James McDonald was on board and he said (he was) on the right legs at the right time and did everything right.”

“We are very aware that some Sydney horses struggle at Caulfield for the first time. We have thought about that probably six weeks ago, so he has done a lot of galloping left-handed. This morning was basically just to give him a look at the layout of the track and to get familiar with the place.”

“He was relaxed in the work and after the work. It looked pretty straight forward. He is a very professional horse, you will see that the more you watch him. (He) takes everything in his stride, he’s not a horse that worries about anything and that is a big attribute for him.”

When asked if the Redoute’s Choice colt – who can further enhance his already $ 20 million-plus stud value with victory on Saturday – was the most exciting horse in his stable apart from wonder mare Winx, Waller said he had a significant upside.

“It would be hard to be detrimental to other horses in the stable but he has the potential to be a very good horse,” Waller said.

“He has the potential to give us something beyond Winx, whenever that may be.”

He suggested it was more unlikely than likely that the colt would go to the $ 5 million Cox Plate at The Valley following Saturday’s race.

James McDonald was delighted with the work from The Autumn Sun, who will partner him on Saturday, and was eagerly looking forward to the Guineas.

“He was really well balanced around the bends which was important,” McDonald said.

“I know obviously galloping trackwork is a bit different to race pressure, but I was pretty happy with the way he got around the bends.”

“He finished off his work really nicely.”

Waller brought a small team of horses to Caulfield on Tuesday morning, including Caulfield Stakes contenders Unforgotten and D’Argento, Thousand Guineas hope Fiesta and Toorak Handicap chance Noire.

Qantas eyes direct Sydney to London flight – would you take the 20 HOUR journey? https://briefnews.eu/qantas-eyes-direct-sydney-to-london-flight-would-you-take-the-20-hour-journey/ https://briefnews.eu/qantas-eyes-direct-sydney-to-london-flight-would-you-take-the-20-hour-journey/#respond Sun, 03 Jun 2018 13:57:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/qantas-eyes-direct-sydney-to-london-flight-would-you-take-the-20-hour-journey/

The Sydney to London direct route is thought to be on the cards after Qantas chief executive spoke at ahead of an International Air Transport Association gathering in Sydney, Australia.

Alan Joyce said: “I think we’ll get to the stage where, technically, we will know where the aircraft are going to be, in the next few months.”

Qantas is said to be keen to close the “tyranny of distance” between Australia and global financial hubs such as London and New York, with a 2022 deadline slated.

Perth and London non-stop flights have already launched, but the airline is said to be considering an order for ultra-long jets that would allow Sydney to London flights, with the Airbus A350 and Boeing 777X in the running.

A purchase decision is expected next year if the plans make financial sense, Joyce explained.

Ultra-long haul flights are aimed primarily at business travellers and can allow airlines to charge a 20 per cent premium over one-stop rivals, according to industry data.

Airbus Chief Commercial Officer Eric Schulz said: “I would not pretend we would sell 1,500 airplanes like this, but I would say a reasonable assumption could be in the neighbourhood of 50-100 airplanes total.”

Ultra-long haul flights are becoming more possible thanks to new airplane technology.

Last week, Singapore Airlines announced it would launch 19-hour flights from Singapore to New York in October.

This is possible thanks to the Airbus A350-900ULR, which carries more fuel than a typical A350-900.

Sydney-London, however, is an even tricker journey, and Qantas wants to do it with more passengers than the 161 business and premium economy seats that Singapore Airlines plans to use on its ultra-long haul routes.

Qantas are yet to announce how many ultra-long haul jets it will order, with Joyce simply saying it would be a “reasonable-sized fleet”.

Potential routes for the airline include Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to London, New York and Paris or Frankfurt.

Perth-London has sold better than expected, particularly in premium cabins, Joyce said, with the economics working even with oil at prices hitting $ 75 a barrel.

Sydney Airport CEO Geoff Culbert said the airport was considering the construction of special arrival lounges to cater to the expected increase in passenger numbers thanks to the ultra-long haul flights.

He explained: “At the moment, 70 per cent of the world’s population is reachable from Sydney on one direct flight.

“Once those aircraft come to market the entire population of the world will be reachable in one flight. It is just an amazing step change in aviation.”

To help passengers prepare for their long journey, Qantas is offering pre-flight yoga classes to Perth-London passengers in its lounge.

They have also adapted their menu offering in all classes onboard.

Singapore to New York flights with Singapore Airlines will launch on 11 October, and the route will be served three times a week before daily operations commence from 18 October.

Missing athletes appear in Sydney https://briefnews.eu/missing-athletes-appear-in-sydney/ https://briefnews.eu/missing-athletes-appear-in-sydney/#respond Mon, 14 May 2018 15:33:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/missing-athletes-appear-in-sydney/ A GROUP of African athletes who went on the run during the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast have turned up in Sydney seeking legal advice on how to stay in Australia.

The sportsmen and women are consulting with the Refugee Advice and Casework Service in Randwick, in the city’s eastern suburbs, The Daily Telegraphrevealed.

They have until Tuesday at midnight until their visas run out and will face detention or deportation unless they have a new application in progress.

Up to 19 athletes disappeared during the Games last month, including a third of the Cameroonian team, sparking a nationwide search. Others hailed from Uganda, Rwanda and Sierra Leone.

Their teammates flew home after their competitions without the missing group.

A handful of officials also did a disappearing act: like Rwanda’s weightlifting coach, who excused himself to go to the toilet before his team competed — and never came back.

Now it appears some of them are in Sydney, making efforts to find a legal way to stay in Australia.

Officials said they walked out of the athletes’ village in “three waves” in the middle of the night, and did not seem likely to return.

The Cameroon team’s press attache Simon Molombe said he had “no idea” where the athletes were heading. “They just left in the night,” he said.

“When we got up in the morning, they were not there. It’s very, very disappointing and very, very embarrassing for Cameroon.

He told news.com.au he “doesn’t think they’ll come back”.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton — who is expected to comment on the athletes’ reappearance today — warned: “If they don’t want to be held in detention or locked up at the local watch house, they’d better jump on a plane before the 15th (of May).”

Cameroon’s chef de mission — having heard nothing from the eight missing members of his 24-strong team — said the matter was now in the hands of police and the Australian Government. Victor Agbor Nso told the BBC “the authorities are very disappointed with the deserters — some did not even compete”.

While police have not yet been looking for the athletes because they still have valid visas, Mr Nso said the Cameroon team had filed an official complaint.

Cameroonian weightlifters Olivier Matam, Aka Angeline Filji and Mikoumba Petit David and boxers Ndzie Tchoyi and Simplice Fotsala, Fokou Arsene, Christelle Ndiang and Yombo Ulrich are among those missing.

A Rwandan athlete, two squash players from Sierra Leone and two athletes from Uganda later also disappeared.

In 2006, at Melbourne’s Commonwealth Games, more than 40 athletes or officials either overstayed, or sought asylum. The Sydney 2000 Olympics and London 2012 Olympics were also hit by stories of athletes overstaying their visas, with some applying for asylum.

Ian Natherson, a migration consultant based on the Gold Coast, said he reeived more than 40 calls during the 2018 Commonwealth Games — mostly from African team members — looking for legal ways to stay in Australia afterwards.

“Just walking down the street [here] the freedom you have — you cannot do that in a lot of African countries,” he told the ABC.

“I come from South Africa myself, where I would not walk the streets after dark.

“I am sure a lot of them did do that here and just thoroughly enjoyed the freedom.”

Gold Coast 2018 organising corporation chairman Peter Beattie stressed the athletes remain within their visas and are free to travel within Australia.

However, the situation has been deemed serious enough for Border Force to be contacted.

Mr Beattie said it was up to the Cameroon team to monitor the situation up until the point the athletes break the conditions of the visas. “It happens at every Games. It’s not a surprise,” he said.

“I don’t want to be too blase, but I don’t get too excited about this because I know there is a system to deal with it.”

Commonwealth Games Federation chief executive David Grevemberg stressed the athletes remained guests in Australia until midnight on May 15. “It’s obviously disappointing that some of the athletes who’ve come didn’t compete as they were scheduled to compete,” he said.

“These athletes are guests here in Australia at this time. They’re still within their visas. They have the right to travel freely, but this is obviously an issue that team Cameroon is monitoring closely and until it becomes a real issue in terms of visas and so forth we would obviously have to take that very seriously.”

Gaining asylum depends on being able to convince authorities there is a threat to your life if you return to your home country. But the athletes may be eligible for special skills visas to allow them to live in Australia and compete professionally.

For some, the risk of emerging from hiding and being sent home may be judged too great, and they may choose to stay under the radar, with no legal documents, living as best they can through menial jobs.

Sydney Kings signing spree continues https://briefnews.eu/sydney-kings-signing-spree-continues/ https://briefnews.eu/sydney-kings-signing-spree-continues/#respond Fri, 11 May 2018 01:40:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sydney-kings-signing-spree-continues/ IT has taken a decade of courting, but talented Sudanese-born big man Deng Deng is finally playing in the NBL after penning a two-year deal with the Sydney Kings.

Kings assistant coach Lanard Copeland has long tracked Deng’s promising career, hoping to one day work alongside the 203cm (6’8”), 98kg (216lb) power forward.

Now Copeland’s persistence has paid dividends.

“From the early days, Deng was a player you could see worked hard on his game on a daily basis,” Copeland said.

“He’s one of the most athletic players you’ll see in our league, but his overall game really started to take shape following his experiences in the NBA G-League and other international stints.

“Now it’s time for Deng to be part of this very strong league right here at home. We know he has a really big upside.”

Deng, 26, was born in South Sudan and spent five years in Egypt before arriving in Australia at the age of nine in 2003.

After attending Box Hill Secondary College in Melbourne, Deng played two seasons for Lee College in Texas before transferring to NCAA D1 program Baylor University in 2015.

Since turning pro, he has played two seasons in the NBA G-League with the Texas Legends before stints in Finland and Lebanon.

Deng has also represented his adopted country in international competition, averaging 4.6 points and 2.1 rebounds per game for Australia in the 2015 World University Games held in South Korea.

Possessing elite athleticism and the ability to run the floor at pace Deng becomes the second player born in South Sudan to represent the Kings after development player Deng Acuoth made two historic appearances for the purple and gold during the 2017/2018 NBL season.

Kings Managing Director Jeff Van Groningen appreciates the talent level that Deng brings to the roster.

“We feel that Deng Deng hasn’t reached his ceiling yet, by a long shot,” Van Groningen said.

“He does some things that can’t be coached — they’re there or they’re not. “Further refinement of his game will be exciting to watch and we welcome Deng to the Kings.”

The second year of Deng’s deal is a team option.

Sydney FC secure Premier’s Plate https://briefnews.eu/sydney-fc-secure-premiers-plate/ https://briefnews.eu/sydney-fc-secure-premiers-plate/#respond Thu, 29 Mar 2018 23:04:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sydney-fc-secure-premiers-plate/ FOUR down, one to go – Sydney FC’s trophy cabinet is expanding again.

On a record-breaking night in Perth, the Sky Blues became the first team to retain the Premier’s Plate, and striker Bobo broke the competition’s scoring record for the regular season with his 23rd and 24th goals of this productive campaign.

A mostly comfortable 3-2 win over Glory was the perfect tonic for Sydney after their recent travails, and will put Graham Arnold’s side in good heart ahead of their must-win trip to Suwon Bluewings in the Asian Champions League on Tuesday – as well as the A-League finals series to come.

The retention of the Plate means Sydney have won the last four trophies on offer, after last season’s double and the FFA Cup victory in December. Securing the championship again in May’s grand final is the final target.

Perth has been such a happy hunting ground for Sydney in recent years that they had to be suffused with confidence, back at the ground where a year ago they had claimed the Premier’s Plate for the first time in seven years.

So it proved, the Sky Blues simply picking Perth off. Glory had their moments in attack but their defending remains startling naive.

Three goals in the first half for the visitors just proved it, and allowed Sydney to rediscover the early-season ruthlessness that has brought them to the brink of making history.

Brandon O’Neill’s perfect chip opened space for Bobo in the 12th minute, and though the Brazilian’s shot was parried by Liam Reddy, Mierzejewski followed up to ram the ball home.

Perth took the game to their visitors, but in the 28th minute Sydney broke to lethal effect.

Mierzejewski picked up a clearance in his own half and essayed a fabulous through ball that Matt Simon chased into the Perth box. As he shaped to shoot, Dino Djulbic lunged in and incurred a penalty.

By driving it into the bottom corner, Bobo was level with Fornaroli.

By halftime, he had the record to himself. Mierzejewski was again the architect, with a sweeping angled pass that allowed Bobo to break the Glory back line yet again. With his left foot, Bobo drove the ball through Reddy’s legs.

At 3-0, the game was largely done and Sydney – with an eye on next week’s Asian Champions League trip to Suwon – were content to sit back and play out the remainder.

Perth tried manfully to create a contest, and with 71 minutes gone they had a lifeline.

Xavi Torres’s through ball allowed Adam Taggart to spring Sydney’s offside trap – drawing Andrew Redmayne, Taggart rolled the ball in.

Briefly the visitors were ruffled, yet Sydney’s defensive composure was solid, another feature to please Graham Arnold as his team seeks to regain its momentum ahead of the finals.

With seconds left Taggart produced a brilliant second goal, swapping passes with Andy Keogh and sweeping home from distance. But there was to be no comeback, just celebrations for Arnold’s men, creating history yet again.

SYDNEY FC 3 (Adrian Mierzejewski 12m, Bobo 29m pen, 39m) PERTH GLORY 2 (Adam Taggart 72m, 89m) at nib Stadium. Crowd: 7,742. Referee: Kris Griffiths-Jones

Apologetic Warner arrives in Sydney https://briefnews.eu/apologetic-warner-arrives-in-sydney/ https://briefnews.eu/apologetic-warner-arrives-in-sydney/#respond Thu, 29 Mar 2018 20:05:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/apologetic-warner-arrives-in-sydney/ DAVID Warner has arrived home in Sydney, breaking his silence on Australia’s ball-tampering saga with an apology via social media before promising to talk more in coming days.

Comforted by his wife Candice and intent on getting his two young daughters to bed, Warner stopped briefly to talk to journalists upon his near-midnight arrival at Sydney airport on Thursday.

“As you can understand, it’s been a tough and an emotional time for my wife and the kids,” Warner said when asked if he’d heard about Darren Lehmann’s decision to quit as Australian coach in the continuing fallout from the ball-tampering scandal.

“At this present time, you’ll hear from me in a couple of days. “At the moment, my priority is to get these kids in bed and rest up and let my mind be clear so I can think and talk to you in a couple of days.”

HEALING STARTS NOW: Aussies get around Smith, Bancroft

‘TOUGHEST THING I’VE DONE’: Lehmann steps down

‘FAILURE OF MY LEADERSHIP’: Shattered Smith breaks down

‘I PANICKED’: Bancroft sorry for ball-tampering cover-up

Earlier on Thursday, the disgraced opener issued a statement on social media while en route back from South Africa after being handed a 12-month ban alongside Steve Smith for his role in the scandal.

He took to Twitter to apologise after he was accused of being the instigator by Cricket Australia after its investigation.

“Mistakes have been made which have damaged cricket,” Warner wrote. “I apologise for my part and take responsibility for it.

“I understand the distress this has caused the sport and its fans. “Its (sic) a stain on the game we all love and I have loved since I was a boy. “I need to take a deep breath and spend time with my family, friends and trusted advisers. You will hear from me in a few days.”

Warner has endured a difficult week since he plotted and instructed Cameron Bancroft to tamper with the ball with sandpaper on the third day of the Cape Town Test against South Africa.

The 31-year-old has been punished most severely by Cricket Australia, with the governing body having also dictated he can never be considered for a leadership position again.

There have also been questions over whether the explosive left-handed opener will play for Australia again, after reports of discontent from teammates during the investigation and in the wake of the incident.

According to CA’s investigation, Warner also failed to “voluntarily report his knowledge of the plan after the match” — something neither Smith or Bancroft were accused of.

Warner on Thursday also lost another major sponsor, after sporting company ASICS dumped both he and Bancroft.

“The decisions and actions taken by David Warner and Cameron Bancroft are not something that ASICS tolerates and are contrary to the values the company stands for,” the company said in a statement.

It comes after Warner was dropped by electronics company LG on Wednesday, and as Australia’s home Test sponsor Magellan also terminated its sponsorship after the affair.
