A police statement on Tuesday said they had conducted search warrants at eight properties in Christchurch, one in Invercargill and another in Manawatu as part of Operation Inca — an investigation into alleged race-fixing in the harness racing industry.
“Today’s warrants were the result of a long-running investigation by the National Organised Crime Group into alleged corruption within the harness racing industry,” national manager Criminal Investigations, Detective Superintendent Tim Anderson said.
“Police take such allegations very seriously and are committed to working with the relevant bodies to ensure New Zealand sport is corruption-free.
“The investigation began with information supplied by the Racing Integrity Unit.
Police have been working in partnership with the RIU and other relevant organisations throughout the investigation.”
Racing Minister Winston Peters expressed deep disappointment at the allegations.
“This is a sad development. New Zealanders need to have confidence that the racing industry has integrity and is not above the law,” Peters said.
“It highlights how important it is that we have a strong, independent authority like the Racing Integrity Unit to ensure offending behaviour is brought to light. We can have confidence that the system is working.”
German police have raided properties belonging to eight people suspected of being members of a new far-right terrorist group, the so-called ‘Reichsburger scene,’ which is seeking to restore the German Empire.
Searches were carried out in three German states after police found evidence that the alleged members of the group held a meeting in the summer of 2017. Reichsburgers, which translates to “Reich citizens,” do not recognize the Federal Republic of Germany as a state, and instead identify with the German Empire that existed from 1871 to 1918. Their goal is to replace the ‘illegitimate’ German government with a new state.

Germany’s GSG 9 anti-terrorism unit descended on houses of “eight known defendants” in the early hours of Sunday morning. According to the federal prosecutor’s office, the police targets are thought to have considered carrying out violent attacks.
The operations in Berlin, Brandenburg and Thuringia were searching for weapons. However, none were mentioned in the prosecutor’s statement after the raids, and no arrests were made during the swoop.
“The accused are suspected of having founded a right-wing terrorist group and to have participated in it as a member. In addition, there are indications of violations of weapons law,” a statement by the German Federal Prosecutor read.
The raids come on the same day that German police reportedly foiled a plan to attack people during the Berlin half-marathon. Sunday’s far-right investigation is not connected to the four marathon arrests, however, nor has it been linked to a vehicle-ramming incident in Muenster on Saturday, which killed two people.

After learning of City’s interest, Mahrez immediately handed in a written transfer request to Leicester and did not travel with the Foxes for their game against Everton tonight (Wed).
Leicester insist the Algerian winger is not for sale and their Thai owners are under no pressure to sell. It is understood their valuation of Mahrez is about £90m after seeing Philippe Coutinho sold for £142m and Virgil van Dijk for £75m in the current transfer window. City have bid about £50m.
It is the second time Mahrez – who was voted the PFA Player of the Year in Leicester’s title-winning season of 2015-16 – has asked for a move.
Chelsea and Arsenal have been linked with him over the past 18 months but last summer only Roma made an official bid for him and their offers were rejected.
City’s sudden move followed just hours after they had smashed their club record transfer fee by signing defender Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao for £57m.
Leicester’s valuation of Mahrez means a deal is unlikely to go through before tonight’s 11pm deadline but City’s sudden interest underlines Guardiola’s concern that the loss of in-form left winger Sane – who damaged ankle ligaments in a reckless tackle by Cardiff’s Joe Bennett – could derail their hopes of trophies on four fronts.

Riyad Mahrez is wanted by Man City
I have interest in a lot of good players
Guardiola refused to deny his interest in Mahrez but admitted negotiations were “complicated”.
“It’s so difficult,” said Guardiola. “The deal with Laporte happened because there was a buy-out clause but, when you have to negotiate [a price], it is always so complicated. I have interest in a lot of good players – there are many – the window is open until the 31st.”
With Gabriel Jesus not expected back for at least another fortnight as he recovers from medial knee ligaments, the Sane blow has left Guardiola short of attacking options.
“Sane is out for six or seven weeks,” he said. “Right now we have only three strikers, including Raheem Sterling, for the next month or month and a half. So we don’t have too much and we play every three days. We have to find solutions.”
Winger Sane will miss at least 11 games – including the Carabao Cup final, the FA Cup fifth and sixth rounds, both legs of the Champions last-16 tie against Basel and several key Premier League clashes, including fixtures with Arsenal and Chelsea.

Aymeric Laporte signed for Man City this week

Riyad Mahrez has handed in a transfer request
Guardiola’s signing of Laporte took his spending to an eye-watering £452m in only 19 months at City. And his total spend since becoming a manager in 2008 is closing in on the £1bn mark, after splashing £261m at Barcelona and £137m at Bayern Munich.
Guardiola tried to sign Laporte 18 months ago but the player decided he was not ready to make the move to English football. Now Laporte believes he is ready and is hoping to use the move to break into France’s World Cup squad.
Guardiola said: “He is 23, the perfect age, he is a left-footed centre-back and he has played since a young age in La Liga, so he has played on the biggest stages, including the Bernabeu and the Nou Camp. He is strong in the air, fast, he has quality with the pass so I’m delighted happy and grateful.
“It is always a little bit tough for young players when they come into the Premier League but he hasn’t come for three months, he comes for four or five years. He has the skills we need to help us.”
Laporte says the chance to work with Guardiola was a big pull. “I have always followed him [Pep], when he was with other clubs as well. I have always been fascinated by him, especially when I have had the chance to watch him. I have had some contact with him. We both have the same style of play, so that’s great.
“Obviously having Guardiola as a manager in your team changes lots of things. He is a very prestigious manager and we must take advantage of that to learn and to improve.
“I’m coming to a big club to achieve great things and obviously, the World Cup is a big thing. We need to work hard until the end of the season, I need to put in great performances, keep growing and try to be able to be called up for Russia.”
City have also completed a £4m deal for England Under-21 midfielder Jack Harrison from sister club New York City. He has been loaned to Middlesbrough for the rest of the season.
But City could recoup some of their huge outlay with West Ham, Newcastle and Valencia all interested in signing central defender Eliaquim Mangala, who is now surplus to requirements following the arrival of Laporte.
Sanchez is expected to arrive at Old Trafford within the next 48 hours and could even make his debut at Burnley this weekend.
United will pay £25m cash to Arsenal and include Mkhitaryan as part of the deal.
They will then hand Sanchez a huge signing-on fee of £25m while agent Fernando Felicevich will bank £5m.
Arsenal, meanwhile, are already starting to prepare for life without the Chilean sensation.
They are closing in on a deal for Mkhitaryan while reports today surfaced that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has agreed personal terms with the Gunners.
Jose Mourinho admitted on Monday night that his side “have a chance” to sign Alexis Sanchez in this window, with previous suitors Manchester City understood to have now exited the race for the 29-year-old due to the cost involved.
Mkhitaryan’s agent Mino Raiola muddied the waters by claiming that Sanchez’s transfer to United is reliant on his client joining Arsenal as part of the deal.
“Manchester United are not going to sign Sanchez unless Mkhi agrees to join Arsenal,” Raiola told The Times.
“Mkhi is going to do what is best for him. He has two-and-a-half years left on his contract so it’s his decision.
“Sanchez is part of the Mkhi deal, not the other way around.”
Mkhitaryan was one of Mourinho’s first signings in the summer of 2016 but has struggled for consistency.
He scored 11 goals last term having started just one Premier League game in the first four months of the campaign. After beginning this season brightly, providing five assists in the first three top-flight games, Mkhitaryan’s form has once again dipped and he has not scored for Mourinho’s side since September.
“Is he going to be involved in one deal and leave us? It’s possible but it’s also possible that he stays,” Mourinho said after the 3-0 win over Stoke.
Manchester United star Phil Jones was questioned about the Sanchez deal and admitted he is the sort of player that would improve any side.
The England ace said: “We just go about what we do best. Keep playing, it’s not up to us, it’s not down to us. We know just as much as you guys.
“If someone new comes in the door then obviously it’s a positive move for United, but it’s not up to us, we just do the business on the pitch.
“Yeah, he’s a good player. But it doesn’t mean to say he’s going to come to United. We’ll have to see.”
It emerged last night that Chelsea were interested in a possible deal but that now appears off the cards.
Boss Antonio Conte last Friday spoke of his admiration for Sanchez and described any potential cut-priced deal for the Chile striker as a great opportunity.
The Italian was evasive when quizzed on Chelsea’s interest in the player, taking his usual stance in deferring matters of recruitment to the club.
Asked if Chelsea were actively seeking to sign Sanchez, Conte said: “I don’t know. I don’t think so. I don’t know, but I don’t think so.”
Conte, speaking ahead of Wednesday’s FA Cup third-round replay at home to Norwich, was reluctant to discuss the transfer market.
“About the transfer market, I prefer to talk to the club, also to give opinions,” he added.
“I repeat: I don’t want to give my opinion about the transfer market.”
The move took a hilarious twist today when Oldham player Ryan McLaughlin demanded the League One side “announce alexis Sanchez”.
But they responded: “The club can confirm that no offer has been made for Alexis Sanchez. Grow up, Ryan.”
In scenes airing tomorrow night, Ben Mitchell (played by Harry Reid) and Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick) get a shock when the police turn up in Albert Square.
As the detectives make their enquiries and begin asking questions about suspicious activity in the area, Ben and Jay become nervous.
The pair deny any knowledge but are seemingly shocked when they are shown a picture of Aidan Maguire (Patrick Bergin).
Ben and Jay are left wondering what Phil (Steve McFadden) has been up to – but were they also secretly involved?
Earlier this week, the Walford gang found a dead body in a coffin instead of the hidden loot.
As the funeral parlour is run by Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick), the gang headed to the cemetery to dig up another casket in order to retrieve the cash.
However, following the first blunder, the second casket was also discovered to be empty.
Police sirens began to sound in the background and the group fled from the scene – without Phil.
Many fans now believe Jay is the guilty culprit as he had access to the funeral parlour and could have easily been listening in to the plans.
Did Jay steal the heist money, and will viewers discover if Ben was involved alongside his friend?
EastEnders continues tomorrow on BBC One at 8pm.
The Germany international is yet to agree terms on a contract extension at Anfield with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.
Jurgen Klopp has admitted he understands Can’s trepidations on signing a new deal, previously stating “It is an important contract for him at his age”.
But the Liverpool coach has remained calm over Can’s situation, despite constant rumours over his future.
Klopp has claimed he is willing to wait until May to see the 23-year-old sign a contract extension at Liverpool.
But that might be too late for the Merseyside club with Juventus reportedly stepping up their attempts to sign the midfielder.
The Serie A club made an approach for Can in the summer but Liverpool swiftly rejected their advances.
However they will be powerless against allowing Can to hold talks with Juventus next month.
And Italian outlet Calciomercato claim Massimiliano Allegri’s side have already contacted Can with a contract offer worth close to £3.1million-a-year plus add-ons on the table.
Inter Milan and Manchester City are also said to be interested in signing Can and Juventus are desperate to beat their rivals.
The former Bayer Leverkusen star has maintained his contract stand-off with Liverpool isn’t down to money but reports have suggested he has demanded close to £150,000-a-week to sign a new deal.
Pochettino has seen his side slip outside of the top four and is ready to bring in reinforcements when the transfer window opens next week.
He is ready to battle Chelsea for England midfielder Barkley, who is returning to fitness after having surgery on a ruptured hamstring.
Barkley, out of contract in the summer, played in a behind-closed-doors game at Everton’s Finch Farm training ground early last week.
And the 24-year-old, who appears on the wanted list of Arsenal and West Ham as well as the Blues, will be ready for first-team action in time for the transfer window.
Manchester United left-back Shaw is another long-term Pochettino target and has struggled to settle at Old Trafford since his £30million move from Southampton in 2014 – he is also interesting Newcastle.
Jose Mourinho will let Shaw leave the club to finance a £25m move for Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon.
Juventus have indicated that they are willing to cash in on the Brazilian wing-back who has failed to sign a new contract.
The Blues spent the whole of last summer trying to tempt the Italian giants into selling the £70million rated star.
But they found that their £55m bid for Sandro was snubbed and the player has suffered a slump in form as a result.
Juventus now feel that they will have to do business when the transfer window opens at the start of next month.
They will however wait for Sandro to make the first move knowing that competition to sign him as increased over the last few months.
French giants Paris Saint-Germain have shown an interest while Manchester United and Manchester City are also keen to give Chelsea competition.
Meanwhile The Blues are considering offering Michy Batshuayi as a makeweight in a deal for Monaco playmaker Thomas Lemar.
Chelsea believe that now their former technical director Michael Emenalo is working for Monaco gives them an edge over Arsenal in the race to sign Lemar.

F1 news featuring Robert Kubica at Williams, Daniel Ricciardo and Mercedes making moves
Robert Kubica appears to have lost out in the race for a 2018 F1 seat but Williams have refused to comment on widespread reports that Sergey Sirotkin is set to take up the vacancy.
Felipe Massa was Lance Stroll’s team-mate last year after being rushed out of retirement to replace Mercedes-bound Valtteri Bottas.
But the Brazilian has retired for good this time and Williams have explored a number of options to replace him, including former F1 driver Kubica and Renault reserve driver Sirotkin.
Both tested for the Grove-based outfit in Abu Dhabi after the last race of the season and Kubica set the faster times on the ultra-soft tyres.
However, reports emerged yesterday suggesting that Williams had decided against signing Kubica with a £15million sponsorship package behind Sirotkin said to be playing a major role.
But the team have remained silent on the rumours while Sirotkin’s manager, Gianpaolo Matteucci, would only talk up his driver’s skill and refused to comment on the contract situation.
“Surely Sergey is a strong, talented candidate for that place,” Matteucci said.

Red Bull believe they have one of the best driver line-ups in Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen
Daniel Ricciardo has been given the hurry-up by Red Bull over his contract talks.
The five-time Grand Prix winner has just 12 months remaining on his current deal and has reportedly been courted by both Mercedes and Ferrari.
The Australian is thought of as one of the grid’s very best overtakers and has twice finished third in the F1 World Drivers’ Championship.
But Red Bull boss Christian Horner has warned Ricciardo, whose team-mate Max Verstappen signed a new contract earlier this year, that there are other drivers the team would happily sign.
“I think Daniel knows what our strengths are and hopefully we’ll be in a reasonable position,” Horner told Racer.
“I think he’s at a stage in his career where he’s wanting to evaluate all of his options, which you can understand.
“The problem is we won’t wait around forever and we’ve got some very good options available to us, but our priority is to try and ensure we find a solution with Daniel.”

Mercedes have continued their strategy of recruiting the best people in the business by picking up former Ferrari man Lorenzo Sassi.
Sassi was the chief engineer in Ferrari’s engine development department but left the team in July with sources on Italy claiming the departure came as a result of an intervention by president Sergio Marchionne, who denied the allegations at the time.
“Sassi is continuing the development of his career,” Marchionne said.
And now Sassi is reportedly ready to join reigning F1 champions Mercedes ahead of the 2018 season.
Mercedes made a similar move for British engineer James Allison, who ended a three-year spell with Ferrari in the summer of 2016.
But he was back on the grid just seven months later, taking over from Williams-bound Paddy Lowe as technical director at Mercedes.
The left-back position has been a problem for Jose Mourinho since he took charge of the club last year.
United spent £27million taking Luke Shaw from Southampton but he has struggled to convince Mourinho he is worthy of a starting spot.
It now looks highly likely that the England international will leave Old Trafford when the transfer window reopens.
Mourinho has converted Ashley Young into a makeshift wing-back so far this season to good effect, but it is thought he is wanting to strengthen the position to try and keep tabs on league-leaders Manchester City.
The Daily Record report that United will give Mourinho an £80m transfer kitty next month.
And Sandro’s desire to leave Juventus in the new year has perked ears in Manchester.
The Italian champions’ head coach Massimiliano Allegri has already stated that his full-back will not be sold mid-season unless they receive a “crazy offer”.
Chelsea have been monitoring the Brazilian closely and it has been reported this week that they are edging closer to a deal.
But United will be hoping to turn Sandro’s head.
However, they will have to dig out a world record fee for a defender if they are to capture his signature.
Juve are apparently holding out for a figure around £61m.
