  • Cheesemaker Beat Wampfler has teamed up with researchers from the University of the Arts in Bern to see if music can change the taste of cheese.
  • His Emmentals are being blasted with a mixture of rock, classical, and hip-hop music.
  • They will be tested in the new year to see if the music has had any impact.
  • There’s no evidence the music will change the cheesemaking process.
  • But in sonochemistry fields, ultrasound is used to alter chemical reactions.
  • So it is possible other sound waves might have an effect.

A Swiss cheesemaker is currently experimenting with music to make his cheese taste better.

According to AFP, Beat Wampfler is testing how music can influence how his Emmental is made from his 19th century cellar in Burgdorf, Switzerland.

‘He doesn’t represent Switzerland’: ex-Liverpool star on Xhaka’s Albanian roots https://briefnews.eu/he-doesnt-represent-switzerland-ex-liverpool-star-on-xhakas-albanian-roots/ https://briefnews.eu/he-doesnt-represent-switzerland-ex-liverpool-star-on-xhakas-albanian-roots/#respond Wed, 05 Sep 2018 17:57:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/he-doesnt-represent-switzerland-ex-liverpool-star-on-xhakas-albanian-roots/

Former Liverpool and Switzerland defender Stephane Henchoz has slammed likely new Swiss captain Granit Xhaka by claiming he does not represent the “traditional” country – because of his Albanian roots.

Arsenal midfielder Xhaka was born in Basel, Switzerland, to Albanian parents from Serbia and rose through the ranks of his local team FC Basel and the Swiss youth teams to gain 66 caps and score 10 goals for his country by the age of 25.

Xhaka was a pivotal part of Switzerland’s recent World Cup 2018 run in Russia and seems the most likely choice to overtake the captaincy from Stephan Lichtsteiner, once the latter retires, for national team boss Vladimir Petković.

However, former Switzerland international Stephane Henchoz has other ideas, and says the player does not represent the country for which he himself won 72 caps at the heart of defense from 1993 to 2006.

Speaking to Swiss-German daily Blick, Henchoz said: “He’s a regular player at Arsenal, but I think a captain must represent Switzerland and the team. Xhaka doesn’t.”

He continued: “Players like (Yann) Sommer, Lichtsteiner or (Fabian) Schar, who represent traditional Switzerland, could feel excluded, just like fans who might not be able to identify with the team.

“The Swiss players without a migration background and Swiss fans, they would feel marginalized.”

Henchoz’s words will stoke the fire of a red-hot debate surrounding Swiss players’ identities. During this summer’s World Cup, Xhaka hit the headlines by the scoring the equalizer against Serbia before wheeling away to make the sign of the double-headed eagle with his hands – in reference to the Albanian flag.

Further controversy ensued when teammate Xherdan Shaqiri, an ethnic Kosovar-Albanian, the netted a stoppage time winner and darted off to mark the goal with the same winged celebration. Both were fined CHF 10,000 (US$ 10,000) for their actions by FIFA.

Shaqiri offered his apologies at a press conference on Tuesday, telling reporters: “It’s all about the excitement…People could give different interpretations to my jubilation. If this gesture could hurt the sensitivity of the people who watched the game… I’m sorry.”

Earlier, the club director of Crvena Zvezda, of Belgrade, who will play Shaqiri’s Liverpool in their Champions League tie, said the player would face “unbelievable psychological pressure” when the two sides meet.

‘Very lucky, but they won’t care’ – Schmeichel on deflected Swedish winner against Switzerland https://briefnews.eu/very-lucky-but-they-wont-care-schmeichel-on-deflected-swedish-winner-against-switzerland/ https://briefnews.eu/very-lucky-but-they-wont-care-schmeichel-on-deflected-swedish-winner-against-switzerland/#respond Tue, 03 Jul 2018 16:58:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/very-lucky-but-they-wont-care-schmeichel-on-deflected-swedish-winner-against-switzerland/ Peter Schmeichel says Sweden’s deflected goal which earned them a World Cup win over Switzerland and a place in the quarter-finals was “lucky,” but added the Swedes won’t mind how they booked their place in the last eight.

Sweden ran out 1-0 winners in St. Petersburg when Emil Forsberg’s strike on 66 minutes deflected off the right boot of Swiss defender Manuel Akanji and into the net.

Former Denmark goalkeeper Schmeichel said the nature of the goal was somewhat fortunate, as Swiss ‘keeper Yann Sommer had the ball covered.

“You have to feel really sorry for (Manuel) Akanji, who deflected the ball past Yann Sommer,” Schmeichel said.

“Forsberg hit it quite well… but it would have gone straight to Yann Sommer, he would have saved it easily.

“He’s actually been one of the best goalkeepers at this tournament, he made a couple of really good saves in this game… he would have just picked this ball up,” the former Manchester United player added.

“This is what happens when you stick your foot out to try to block the shot.

“So very unfortunate, very lucky for Sweden, they scored the goal, winning the game on that and now in the in the quarter-finals. That really is a fantastic result for Sweden,” he added.

With the result, Sweden booked their place in the last eight of the World Cup for the first time since 1994, when they went on to finish third.

The Swedes were denied a chance to double their lead deep into injury time, when a penalty was initially awarded by referee Damir Skomina when Swiss defender Michael Lang pushed over Martin Olsson with the Swede bearing down on goal.

However, the decision was reversed to a free-kick with the help of VAR – although Lang still received his marching orders.

The game ended 1-0, but Schmeichel said the scoreline and gritty nature of the win in a game characterized by poor finishing would matter little to the army of Swedish fans in Russia and back home.

“I can tell you 100 percent, the Swedish people don’t care, they won 1-0, they are in the quarter-finals,” Schmeichel said.

Sweden will now face the winners of the England versus Colombia game in Moscow later on Tuesday.

Japanese, Mexican World Cup fairytales come to an end1:20

World Cup: All the goals from another knock of Round of 16 action at the World Cup, featuring Brazil v Mexico and Belgium v Japan.

HALFTIME UPDATE: A goalless half, but not a bad one by any means.

Both teams had chances but lacked the ruthless goalscorer to convert their many opportunities.

For the Swiss, most eyes are on Xherdan Shaqiri – and perhaps Granit Xhaka’s long-range efforts – but the best of their attack has come through left-back Ricardo Rodriguez, who has found space down the left and put in more than a handful of enticing crosses.

Shaqiri, too, has been a threat but it has been Sweden who have had the clearest of chances.

Marcus Berg was through on goal just minutes in, only to slice his effort away.

But he won’t be feeling as bad as Albin Ekdal, who has fired two excellent chances over the cross bar.

Having never scored in international football before, Ekdal was an odds-on chance of squashing that record when he latched onto a glorious cross from Mikael Lustig – only to sidefoot it over the bar from a handful of metres out.

Lustig picked up a yellow card, which will force him to miss the quarter-final – should Sweden qualify.

This game is begging for a goal, and both teams are providing ample opportunity.

In is 24 years since Sweden last reached the last eight, while Switzerland hasn’t done so since they hosted the tournament in 1954.

Both teams have suffered blows ahead of the clash, with Switzerland missing captain Stephan Lichtsteiner and fellow defender Fabian Schaer while Sweden will be without Sebastian Larsson through suspension.

Switzerland chooses gold bullion over paper wealth backed by US dollar https://briefnews.eu/switzerland-chooses-gold-bullion-over-paper-wealth-backed-by-us-dollar/ https://briefnews.eu/switzerland-chooses-gold-bullion-over-paper-wealth-backed-by-us-dollar/#respond Sat, 30 Jun 2018 06:23:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/switzerland-chooses-gold-bullion-over-paper-wealth-backed-by-us-dollar/ Another country is betting on physical gold. Switzerland’s pension fund has boosted its investments in bullion, switching from the paper-backed securities in US dollars.

“The Swiss government Pension System decided to change from paper gold in the amount of 700 million CHF into physical gold and store it in Switzerland. The 700 million only stands for 2 percent of the total assets, but it is quite a surprise that they do this,” Claudio Grass, an independent precious metals advisor and Mises Ambassador told RT.com.

According to Grass, it is a strong signal that people should take seriously, since a pension fund is an investment vehicle that has a long-term strategy.

“Physical gold is the best way to hedge as well as to accumulate wealth over decades. If you would have purchased for $ 100,000 gold in mid 70ties the holding without doing anything would be worth more than $ 2 million,” the analyst said. Another factor why the pension fund demanded physical gold was that they understand that paper gold just represents a claim on gold in a highly paper-leveraged gold market, Grass explained.

“It makes common sense under the actual circumstances to assure it is stored in the home country, Switzerland, instead of London or the US, which reminds me of the central bank repatriation,” the analyst added.

Grass adds that countries are noting the geopolitical shift from West to East and that is why they are buying more real gold instead of the US dollar-based papers.

“The last geopolitical shift that started with WWI and ended with WWII, put the US in a dominant position and it owned and stored 70 percent of the gold reserves of the free world. This is also one of the main reasons why the US won the Empire over from the Brits. Now we can witness another geopolitical power shift, with the rise of the East,” he said.

The global debt burden continues to grow, while more than 65 percent of all monetary reserves on this planet are in US dollars, Grass notes. “Holding physical gold is definitely the best hedge against all sorts of fiat money risks, but from a central bank perspective it is definitely the best hedge against a weakening dollar that is on its way to reaching its intrinsic value which is zero,” he said.

Brazil joined the list of big teams struggling to win their opening matches at the World Cup in Russia.

The five-time champions were held to a 1-1 draw by Switzerland on Sunday, a few hours after four-time champion Germany was beaten by Mexico 1-0.

Philippe Coutinho gave Brazil the lead in the 20th minute with a volley that bounced in off the right post. Steven Zuber then headed in the equalizer in the 50th. Mexican referee Cesar Ramos dismissed complaints that Zuber had shoved defender Miranda before getting to the corner from Xherdan Shaqiri.

Besides Brazil and Germany, Argentina was held to a 1-1 draw by Iceland on Saturday and Spain and Portugal played to a 3-3 draw on Friday.

Canada falls to Switzerland in semis at hockey worlds https://briefnews.eu/canada-falls-to-switzerland-in-semis-at-hockey-worlds/ https://briefnews.eu/canada-falls-to-switzerland-in-semis-at-hockey-worlds/#respond Sat, 19 May 2018 21:59:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canada-falls-to-switzerland-in-semis-at-hockey-worlds/

Canada will not play for a gold medal at the world hockey championship for the first time in four years.

Bo Horvat and Colton Parayko were Canada's scorers in a 3-2 loss to Switzerland on Saturday in the semifinal of the men's international tournament.

Darcy Kuemper started in net for the Canadians, who will face the United States on Sunday in the bronze-medal game. Switzerland will face Sweden for gold.

Gaetan Haas scored the eventual game winner, and Leonardo Genoni made 43 saves, as Switzerland edged Canada 3-2 to advance to the gold medal game against Sweden. 1:02

Gaetan Haas's third-period goal was the eventual winner for the Swiss, while Tristan Scherwey and Gregory Hoffman also scored.

Leonardo Genoni made 43 saves in net for Switzerland.

Special teams were the difference in the game. A disciplined Switzerland killed off the single power play it gave up. Canada's power-play unit was potent on Thursday, scoring three times in its 5-4 quarterfinal win over Russia.

In the earlier semifinal, the defending champion Swedes crushed the Americans 6-0. Sweden set up the victory with three goals in three minutes and seven seconds midway through the second period.

"We didn't play our best game but we put up a lot of goals," forward Patric Hornqvist said. "We still have some improvement to do for the game tomorrow."

Sweden is going for a third world title in six years.

Viktor Arvidsson scored two goals and goaltender Anders Nilsson made 41 saves as Sweden shutout the United States 6-0 to advance to the gold medal game. 1:05

Viktor Arvidsson led Sweden with two goals and goaltender Anders Nilsson made 41 shots for the shutout.

Trailing 1-0 in the second, the U.S. had a four-minute power play but allowed a short-handed goal by Magnus Paajarvi, who scored on a rebound after goaltender Keith Kinkaid stopped Mikael Backlund on a breakaway.

Hornqvist stretched the lead to 3-0 on a power play, and Sweden underlined its control when Mattias Janmark made it 4-0 just 11 seconds later.

Arvidsson added his second into an empty net in the final period, and Adrian Kempe finished it off with the sixth. Sweden earned its ninth win from nine games in this championship.

The U.S. pressured in the opening period, outshooting Sweden 16-8 and 41-19 overall. But it was the Swedes who went ahead. Arvidsson knocked in a loose puck in the crease following a shot from above the right circle by Filip Forsberg.

U.S. captain Patrick Kane, the overall scoring leader, failed to register a point for the first time in the championship.

"We just made too many mistakes and they capitalized," Kane said. "They've got a lot of good players over there and made us pay for those mistakes.

"It's gonna be tough to regroup [for the bronze medal game] … but we have to do it."

Switzerland has a stunningly high rate of gun ownership — here’s why it doesn’t have mass shootings https://briefnews.eu/switzerland-has-a-stunningly-high-rate-of-gun-ownership-heres-why-it-doesnt-have-mass-shootings/ https://briefnews.eu/switzerland-has-a-stunningly-high-rate-of-gun-ownership-heres-why-it-doesnt-have-mass-shootings/#respond Sun, 25 Mar 2018 06:40:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/switzerland-has-a-stunningly-high-rate-of-gun-ownership-heres-why-it-doesnt-have-mass-shootings/ Switzerland Swiss army honor guard soldiers troops militaryREUTERS/Thomas Hodel

Switzerland hasn’t had a mass shooting since 2001, when a man stormed the local parliament in Zug, killing 14 people and then himself.

The country has about 2 million privately owned guns in a nation of 8.3 million people. In 2016, the country had 47 homicides with firearms. The country’s overall murder rate is near zero.

The National Rifle Association often points to Switzerland to argue that more rules on gun ownership aren’t necessary. In 2016, the NRA said on its blog that the European country had one of the lowest murder rates in the world while still having millions of privately owned guns and a few hunting weapons that don’t even require a permit.

But the Swiss have some specific rules and regulations for gun use.

Business Insider took a look at the country’s past with guns to see why it has lower rates of gun violence than the US.

Switzerland is obsessed with getting shooting right. Every year, it holds a shooting contest for kids aged 13 to 17.

Zurich’s Knabenschiessen is a traditional annual festival that dates back to the 1600s.

Though the word roughly translates to “boys shooting” and the competition used to be only boys, teenage girls have been allowed in since 1991.

Kids in the country flock to the competition every September to compete in target shooting using Swiss army service rifles. They’re proud to show off how well they can shoot.

Accuracy is prized above all else, and a Schutzenkonig — a king or queen of marksmen — is crowned.

The Swiss stance is one of “armed neutrality.”

Switzerland hasn’t taken part in any international armed conflict since 1815, but some Swiss soldiers help with peacekeeping missions around the world.

Many Swiss see gun ownership as part of a patriotic duty to protect their homeland.

Most Swiss men are required to learn how to use a gun.

Unlike the US, Switzerland has mandatory military service for men.

All men between the ages of 18 and 34 deemed “fit for service” are given a pistol or a rifle and trained.

After they’ve finished their service, the men can typically buy and keep their service weapons, but they have to get a permit for them.

In recent years, the Swiss government has voted to reduce the size of the country’s armed forces.

Switzerland is on the cusp of becoming the first country to formally integrate drones into the air traffic management system that controls its airspace.

The limited integration is the first to be launched under a broader European initiative called U-space, which seeks to create a digital infrastructure that would allow millions of small drones to safely operate beyond line-of-sight in approved airspace. A similar, though more modest, model in the US called Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management (UTM) has been developed by NASA. Managing and tracking small drones is key to opening the commercial market for drone services.

Starting in June, Swiss air traffic control operator Skyguide will begin merging its own data and traffic management applications with a software platform developed by Santa Monica, California-based AirMap Inc. The software is called AirMap, which, as the name implies, is a digital airspace-mapping platform.
