Wine aficionados are known for gently swirling their wine in the glass before tasting, and it isn’t as pretentious as it seems. (Well, maybe a little.) They claim the rotation mixes in oxygen and enhances the flavor. Physics backs them up, specifically a mini-subfield dubbed “oenodynamics.” The swirling action—technically called “orbital shaking”—creates a rotating gravity wave in the direction of the swirling force being applied, churning up the liquid in the process.

It’s often said that science begins with someone noting an unusual effect and thinking, “Huh… that’s funny”—and then investigating to find out more. Such was the case for a coterie of wine-swirling physicists. Several years ago, Martino Reclari, then a graduate student at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland, was out to dinner with colleagues when the conversation turned to the different kinds of wave dynamics they could produce by swirling their wine glasses: one big smooth wave, a series of smaller ripples, or a splash, for instance.

Not content to leave it at the dinner table, they performed a series of experiments in the ensuing weeks by filling small cylinders of varying sizes with different volumes of a modest merlot. They used gyrating machines commonly found in chemistry labs to swirl the wine in the cylinders, duly noting how various factors affected the behavior of the wine.

Irma, one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes in recorded history, hit several Caribbean islands as a Category 5 storm on Wednesday, leaving devastation and destruction in its wake.

Meanwhile, storms Jose and Katia are also brewing. Katia is now a Category 2 hurricane with 100-mph winds, and Jose and Irma are both Category 4. 

On Friday morning, NOAA captured breathtaking yet horrifying footage of the three storms swirling from space using its GOES-16 satellite:

Hurricane Katia is on the left approaching Mexico, where it’s expected to make landfall within the next 24 hours. 

Hurricane Irma is in the center heading towards Florida with wind speeds around 150 mph. Forecasts suggest the center of the storm will hit the southern part of the state on Sunday, and hurricane warnings have been issued along much of the Florida coast. Irma spans almost 400 miles — so it’s large enough to affect the entire state regardless of where it makes landfall. Evacuations are underway across the state in preparation. 

East of Irma, Hurricane Jose is on its way toward the Caribbean islands of Antigua, Barbuda, Anguilla, St. Martin, St. Barthelemy — all of which were already devastated by Irma on Wednesday. Barbuda officials are attempting to evacuate the island’s entire population of 1,800 before the second hurricane arrives on Saturday. Jose is expected to veer north, so is not likely to hit the US, Cuba, or the Dominican Republic. 

The peak of hurricane season in the Atlantic is around September 10, so it’s not uncommon to have multiple storms during this time of year. However, it’s relatively rare for two to make landfall in the US in such a short timeframe. And this is the first time on record that the Atlantic has had two storms with sustained speeds of over 150 mph happening at once.

Phil Klotzbach, a meteorologist at Colorado State University who specializes in hurricane forecasts, has called the 2017 hurricane season “super active.” He noted on Twitter that the last time the Atlantic had three simultaneous hurricanes at Category 2 level or above was in 1893.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court enters its final week of work before a long summer hiatus with action expected on the Trump administration’s travel ban and a decision due in a separation of church and state case that arises from a Missouri church playground.

The biggest news of all, though, would be if Justice Anthony Kennedy were to use the court’s last public session on Monday to announce his retirement.

To be sure, Kennedy has given no public sign that he will retire this year and give President Donald Trump his second high court pick in the first months of his administration. Kennedy’s departure would allow conservatives to take firm control of the court.

But Kennedy turns 81 next month and has been on the court for nearly 30 years. Several of his former law clerks have said they think he is contemplating stepping down in the next year or so. Kennedy and his clerks were gathering over the weekend for a reunion that was pushed up a year and helped spark talk he might be leaving the court.

“Soon we’ll know if rumors of Kennedy’s retirement are accurate,” one former Kennedy clerk, George Washington University law professor Orin Kerr, said on Twitter Friday.

When the justices take the bench Monday, they are expected to decide the case of Trinity Lutheran Church of Columbia, Missouri, which was excluded from a state grant program to pay for soft surfaces on playgrounds run by not-for-profit groups. The case is being closely watched by advocates of school vouchers, who hope the court will make it easier to use state money to pay for private, religious schooling in states that now prohibit it.

Missouri has since changed its policy under Republican Gov. Eric Greitens so that churches may now apply for the money.

Also expected in the next few days, though there’s no deadline by which the court must decide, is a ruling on whether to allow the administration to immediately enforce a 90-day ban on visitors from six mostly Muslim countries.

Justice Neil Gorsuch, Trump’s first Supreme Court nominee, could play a pivotal role in both the travel ban and church playground cases.

In all, six cases that were argued between November and April remain undecided. Three of those, all involving immigrants or foreigners, were heard by an eight-justice court, before Gorsuch joined the bench in April.

If the eight justices are evenly divided, those cases could be argued a second time in the fall, with Gorsuch available to provide the tie-breaking vote.

NASA has shared an incredible close-up portrait of Jupiter taken from the Juno probe during its fifth flyby of the giant planet.

The snap was captured by the JunoCam on March 27, as the spacecraft completed its latest orbit, at a distance of about 12,400 miles (20,000km) from the massive planet.

Social media users were quick to comment on the unusual shape of Jupiter in the image.

However, NASA explained that because the Juno spacecraft is so close to Jupiter its camera cannot capture the entire illuminated area in one image, and so the gas giant’s sides are cut off at the edges.

Before this latest journey over Jupiter’s mysterious cloud tops, the public was asked to vote on picture sites for the JunoCam to target. NASA makes its raw Juno images available to the public, and said in a statement about the latest stunning release that the “enhanced color image was created by citizen scientist Bjorn Jonsson.”

The detailed photo captures several interesting features and activity on the mottled planet’s surface including areas Jupiter spotters referred to as the “String of Pearls“, “Between the Pearls” and “An Interesting Band Point.”

The STB Spectre, a feature in Jupiter’s South Temperate Belt, where multiple atmospheric conditions appear to collide, is also visible in the image.

The $ 1 billion spacecraft launched in 2011 and took five years to reach Jupiter. It began orbiting the planet last July and will make its next close flyby on May 19. In February next year, the space probe will undergo the final leg of its Jupiter journey, plunging into the planet’s clouds and burning up.
