THE OIL price was supposed to be soaring around now. With American sanctions against Iran taking effect earlier this month, exports from that country, the world’s fourth-largest producer of crude oil last year, were expected to shrink to close to zero. In anticipation the price of Brent crude, the international benchmark, went above $ 86 in early October, a four-year-high, and some warned of prices above $ 100 a barrel.

Instead, by November 8th oil had entered a bear market. The price of Brent crude stood at $ 66.53 on November 14th. West Texas Intermediate, the American oil benchmark, dropped for 12 straight trading sessions, until November 14th, when it at last ticked up (see chart). That was the longest uninterrupted decline in over three decades. American crude futures have plunged by 20% from their recent peak.

Eventually, you might not need a battery or a conspicuous external power source to keep a device running for years on end. A team at MIT has created a device that produces energy by exploiting the temperature swings that occur between day and night. Known as a thermal resonator, it uses a hybrid of materials that produce both high heat conduction and capacity. A copper or nickel foam at its core is coated with graphene to boost its conductivity, and is infused with a phase-changing material (octadecane) that serves as storage. Effectively, one side of the device is always capturing heat while the other is storing it — you just have to harvest that energy with conventional techniques.

The initial device was relatively tiny, and only produced 1.3 milliwatts of power. That’s enough for basic sensors or communication sensors, however, and it’s hard to complain too loudly when it’s virtually effortless. It could also be changed to produce energy from other temperature cycles, like those in a fridge or a factory.

There are more than a few potential uses, especially if researchers can increase the power output. MIT envisioned planetary rovers that can keep running for years without needing special conditions. Thermal resonators could also serve as backups for existing renewable energy: if a solar panel goes down, the grid could still have enough power to broadcast a request for help. It wouldn’t be an infinite source of power by any means, but it would be trustworthy enough that you could leave a device alone knowing that it always has at least some kind of electricity on tap.

“I have asked the government to take the necessary measures for the use of glyphosate to be banned in France as soon as alternatives are found, and at the latest in three years,” Macron said on Twitter, supplementing the statement with the hashtag #MakeOurPlanetGreatAgain.

Macron made his announcement following the tight vote in Brussels, when the EU prolonged the license for the controversial substance for five years. Monday’s vote ended months of indecisiveness, as 18 out of 28 European countries approved the extension of the chemical’s usage. The European Commission could, in theory, extend the license by itself, but it said it wanted the member states themselves to decide the controversial issue.

Eurocrats have already praised the decision. “Today’s vote shows that when we all want to, we are able to share and accept our collective responsibility in decision-making,” health and food safety commissioner Vytenis Andriukaitis said.

The decision is an apparent defeat for France, which has been pushing for a shorter license prolongation period of three years. The swing vote which decided the fate of glyphosate, widely known under the Monsanto agrochemical giant’s brand name RoundUp, came from Macron’s key EU ally Germany. Berlin has been abstaining from voting during Brussels’ previous attempts to renew the license, which is set to expire on December 15.

To extend the license, the EU required the votes of at least 16 member states, representing at least 65 percent of the bloc’s population. Even with such a major country as Germany voting in favor of the weed killer, the 18 supporters barely surpassed the threshold, scoring 65.7 percent.

Apart from potentially worsening relations with France, Berlin’s surprise decision of Berlin may contribute to the ongoing domestic crisis in Germany itself. As Chancellor Angela Merkel has failed to form a coalition with the pro-business Free Democrats (FDP) and the Green Party, the Social Democrats (SPD) remain her only option to remain in power and avoid looming new elections. The SPD has already reacted angrily to the glyphosate vote outcome, with Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks from the party accusing Merkel and her party of reneging on a deal to continue abstaining.

While glyphosate has been heavily used worldwide for decades already, the weed killer has been at the epicenter of heated debates since 2015, when a study by a World Health Organization agency, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), emerged, linking the chemical to cancer cases. While several other studies refuting the findings have been published since then, the critics dismissed them as biased in favor of agrochemical corporations, namely the American giant Monsanto.

The EU has conducted its own study into the matter, and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has evaluated in March this year that the glyphosate “did not meet the criteria” to be classified as a carcinogen, a mutagen, or as toxic for reproduction.

Bitcoin traders are on edge as they await the outcome of the civil war that will decide the fate of the crytpocurrency. On Tuesday, core developers and miners will decide whether bitcoin remains as is, or if there will be a hard fork that splinters the cryptocurrency.

Bitcoin is trading up 0.52% at near $ 2,773 a coin.

Up until recently, it looked like everyone was on board with SegWit2x, a proposal that, according to bitcoin evangelist Paul McNeal, moves the threshold for implementation down to 80% and also allows for a small increase in the size of blocks on the chain to 2 MBs. That was until bitcoin cash, an alternative to both bitcoin and the SegWit2x version, entered the picture. 

“Bitcoin cash basically came out of nowhere,” Charlie Morris, the chief investment officer of NextBlock Global, an investment firm with digital assets, told Business Insider.” A group of miners who didn’t like SegWit2x are going to opt for this new software that will increase the size of blocks from the current 1 megabyte to 8.”

For what it’s worth, the majority of bets placed in the gambling markets aren’t predicting a good outcome for bitcoin. Accroding to Ed Pownell, a company spokesperson at Bodog, of the 470 people who have wagered on the event, “310 people think the price will dip below $ 2,000 per coin.” 

Bitcoin is up 186% in 2017.
