Cancelled at Adult Swim After 7 Seasons (and 17-Plus Years!) https://briefnews.eu/venture-bros-cancelled-at-adult-swim-after-7-seasons-and-17-plus-years/ https://briefnews.eu/venture-bros-cancelled-at-adult-swim-after-7-seasons-and-17-plus-years/#respond Tue, 08 Sep 2020 02:49:54 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/venture-bros-cancelled-at-adult-swim-after-7-seasons-and-17-plus-years/

The Venture Bros. are no more: Adult Swim has cancelled the long-running animated series after seven seasons.

“Unfortunately, it’s true: Venture Bros. has been canceled,” series creator Christopher McCulloch, who uses the pseudonym Jackson Publick, announced on Twitter. “We got the highly disappointing news a few months ago, while we were writing what would have been Season 8. We thank you, our amazing fans, for 17 years of your kind (and patient) attention. And, as always, we love you.”

Added voice actor James Urbaniak, “So, as it must to all, cancellation has come for The Venture Bros. The pilot aired 17 years ago, which means the show was almost old enough to vote. It was one of the great gifts of my life [and] career. The fans were, quite simply, the best. Thank you, everybody. Go. Team. Venture!”

McCulloch and fellow EP Don Hammer reportedly announced at the 2018 San Diego Comic-Con that they had started work on Season 8 concurrently with their work on Season 7, and that it would consist of 10 episodes. The cancellation news would signal the latest in a string of renewal reversals (following truTV’s I’m Sorry and Netflix’s The Society) — though it appears that Adult Swim had never officially announced an eighth-season order.

Venture Bros. first debuted in February 2003, with its pilot, and Season 1 kicked off 18 months later. In addition to McCulloch and Urbaniak, who voiced Hank and Thaddeus, the cast included Michael Sinterniklaas (Marvel’s Future Avengers) as Dean and Patrick Warburton (Family Guy) as Brock Samson.

Its Season 7 finale, which will now have to serve as a series finale, aired way back on Oct. 7, 2018.

TVLine’s Cable Scorecard has been updated to reflect Venture Bros.‘ cancellation. Are you disappointed to see the show come to a premature end?

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

"It's time to hang up my Speedo," the 20-year national team member said in a statement released by Swimming Canada. "It was the greatest of honours to represent our country and I'm proud to have been able to fulfill all my competitive dreams.

"Sport is the most amazing school of life and I had the privilege of being its student for the past 25 years."

The nine-time Paralympic champion, who also won 32 medals across seven world championships, was born with a malformation in his right leg commonly known as club foot.

At his first Paralympic Games at Sydney in 2000, Huot won three gold medals and three silver. He followed that performance with his most productive Games four years later, capturing five gold and a silver in Athens.

The reality is that Benoit has transcended sport and will leave a legacy of sportsmanship, courage and dignity.— Swimming Canada CEO Ahmed El-Awadi on retiring Paralympian Benoit Huot

Huot was named Canada's flag-bearer at the closing ceremony at the 2012 Paralympics in London after a three-medal effort, including a world record in the 200 individual medley SM10.

"Benoit is one of the most celebrated Paralympians worldwide but he is so much more than all the accolades and achievements I could list," said Swimming Canada CEO Ahmed El-Awadi. "The reality is that Benoit has transcended sport and will leave a legacy of sportsmanship, courage and dignity."

Benoit Huot: By the numbers

  • First Team Canada appearance: 1998 (age 14)
  • Number of world championship medals as a 14-year-old: 6
  • Number of Commonwealth Games medals: 4
  • Number of Parapan Am Games medals: 12
  • Number of years awarded Swimming Canada's male para-swimmer of the year: 12
  • Number of current major long-course records: 10 (Six Canadian, two Americas, one world championship, one Parapan Am Games)

El-Awadi added Huot "was and will always be an ambassador for swimming, the entire Paralympic movement, and an inspiration to anyone who feels they can't do or achieve something."

WATCH | Huot on what remains within the Paralympic movement:

After 20 years representing Canada all over the world, swimmer Benoit Huot is retiring. He's seen the Paralympic movement go through many changes since the early nineties , and Huot tells CBC Sports' Jacqueline Doorey what more needs to be done. 3:39

In 2015, he competed at the IPC world championships and Glasgow and later that summer at the Parapan Am Games in Toronto, earning a gold and four silver.

Numerous accolades

On Dec. 30, 2016, Huot was named a member of the Order of Canada, which celebrates Canadians who have excelled in their field or who have demonstrated exceptional dedication or service to their country.

Huot was made a Knight of the National Order of Quebec last year for "outstanding achievement" in his field and is a multiple recipient of the "Person with a Disability of the Year" King Clancy Award.

Paralympian Benoit Huot, left, who was invested as member of the Order of Canada by Governor General David Johnston in 2017, has retired from competitive swimming at age 35. He won 20 Paralympic medals, including nine gold, and 32 medals across six world championships. (Fred Chartrand/Canadian Press/File)

Now a swimming commentator for ICI Radio-Canada Télé, Huot now intends to continue his mission with youth with disabilities through various initiatives, including the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Foundation and Canadian Paralympic Committee.

Mike Thompson, Huot's coach at the High Performance Centre in Quebec, became attracted to the Paralympic movement after learning of the swimmer's vision to have a Paralympic medal mean as much as an Olympic medal.

"It inspires me to stay here until that vision becomes a reality," Thompson told Swimming Canada. "I know that Ben will be successful, no matter what he does. I've seen him tackle a lot of things and I've seen him identify and capitalize on the best opportunities under stress and through adversity. It's just in his nature; he's a winner."

Aurélie Rivard on Huet: 'He inspired me to work hard'

Aurélie  Rivard, who was named para-swimmer of the year by Swimming Canada in 2015 along with Huot, told Swimming Canada that he has been an important person in her career.

"I owe him a lot," she said of Huot, who began swimming as an eight-year-old. "He inspired me to work hard and push beyond myself every day to achieve my goals.

"It makes me sad I will no longer share a lane with him."

Added 1992 Canadian Olympic swim champion Mark Tewksbury: "Benoit Huot is like the Michael Phelps of Canadian Paralympic swimming. Iconic and legendary. But beyond his athletic achievements, it is his leadership and example that he will be most remembered for.

"Benoit was an excellent swimmer but was an even better teammate. He set the tone for the next generation of excellence in Canadian Paralympic swimming."

Can’t swim, will swim: Meet Mozambique’s new ocean conservationists https://briefnews.eu/cant-swim-will-swim-meet-mozambiques-new-ocean-conservationists/ https://briefnews.eu/cant-swim-will-swim-meet-mozambiques-new-ocean-conservationists/#respond Tue, 30 Oct 2018 18:09:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cant-swim-will-swim-meet-mozambiques-new-ocean-conservationists/

Melissa Hobson

October 29, 2018

In a community where the majority of locals are terrified of the water, despite relying for the ocean on their income, these Mozambicans are teaching youngsters to swim as a way of inspiring a new generation of ocean conservationists.

Alberto, our usually chirpy housekeeper, has a melancholy air this morning. Most mornings, our greetings are a bright “Bom dia! Tudo bem?” (“Good morning! Everything OK?”) followed by a discussion of whether I’ve tried the dish he’s brought for lunch—often matapa, the traditional cassava dish here in Mozambique. Other days, we simply look across the bay for humpback whales.

“Sim, tudo bem,” he sighs. And what he tells me next reveals that everything is far from OK. His eyes well up as he explains, in English more broken than usual, that his sister’s grandson had been playing on the beach yesterday, was caught in a strong wave, and drowned.

“The sea was bad yesterday,” he muses sadly. “It is very good today.” I follow his gaze towards the ocean and he’s right. The howling winds have dropped off and the sea looks like a wrinkled blue blanket; calm and innocuous. Somehow, today’s flat water makes the tragic loss of a young life seem even more cruel. The funeral is at 11am.

Simone’s friend and fellow Coral Reef Club member, Nelson Nhamussua, 20, has also become passionate about the ocean. Training to become a surf instructor, he hopes to one day go to university to study marine biology. Nelson learned to swim through Nemos Pequeños and his involvement with Coral Reef led to an opportunity to work as a guide for a local ecotourism initiative called Tofo Life. The tour helps villagers earn money to reduce their reliance on unsustainable fishing while teaching tourists about the local community’s daily life.

I ask him how the program has changed his perception of the ocean: “I come from a family of fisherman,” Nelson tells me, “but I’m proud of myself for learning about marine conservation. I hope other Mozambican people will change their mind about the sea and realize that the ocean isn’t only there to supply us with food.”

As well as teaching life-saving skills, the Ocean Guardian instructors have directly saved lives too. In 2016, a boat sailing from Inhambane to Maxixe sank as the 40 passengers were disembarking. The weather was treacherous and most of the people inside did not know how to swim. It was a stroke of luck, perhaps, that four Ocean Guardian instructors were close by and rushed to the site, working together to rescue passengers, administer CPR and send casualties to the local hospital. Sadly, there were four fatalities but had it not been for the instructors, it would have been more.

There is a long way to go, but things are steadily improving. Nearly 2,000 children have been reached by the Ocean Guardians project since its inception in six years ago. In 2015, before the program was implemented on remote Bazaruto Island in Mozambique, only six per cent of Bazaruto’s population could swim. Now, that figure is 11 per cent.

It will take time to change the nation’s negative perception of the ocean, but hope comes through this younger generation as hundreds of children develop a positive relationship with the ocean from a young age.

“I hope that in the future, many Mozambicans will have developed ownership of the ocean,” explains Razaque,” and will be able to take positive actions for the wellbeing of the ocean and for the communities that rely upon the ocean for their livelihood. I also believe that many young Mozambicans will be able to say that MMF helped them to reach an important position in society.”

This Week In Trailers: Trust Machine, Meow Wolf: Origin Story, Sink or Swim, Super Drags, The London Korean Film Festival https://briefnews.eu/this-week-in-trailers-trust-machine-meow-wolf-origin-story-sink-or-swim-super-drags-the-london-korean-film-festival/ https://briefnews.eu/this-week-in-trailers-trust-machine-meow-wolf-origin-story-sink-or-swim-super-drags-the-london-korean-film-festival/#respond Sun, 28 Oct 2018 11:11:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-week-in-trailers-trust-machine-meow-wolf-origin-story-sink-or-swim-super-drags-the-london-korean-film-festival/ Green Band Trailer

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising?

This week we let the Ted in Bill & Ted explain blockchain, expose the youths to some fabulous animation, get a little freaky with our art, get our male synchronized swimming on, and get excited about a film festival.

Trust Machine

Director Alex Winter is on top of all this. His documentaries Downloaded and Deep Web show that he not only has a handle on the world of technology but that he can articulate some of the more complex issues with directorial elegance. This brings us to his latest foray into breaking down one of the most overused concepts and word in 2018: Blockchain. Specifically, here’s what the documentary is about:

[Narrated by Rosario Dawson], Alex Winter drills down on blockchain, the decentralized technology that supports cryptocurrencies. Why are banks terrified while UNICEF Ventures embraces it to help refugee children? Winter follows tech innovators striking a raw nerve as banks and network pundits rush to condemn volatile cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology. British hacktivist Lauri Love fights extradition—his computer skills perceived a threat to the US government. Through the film, Winter reveals that the proponents of the blockchain—a verified digital ledger—are already using the technology to change the world; fighting income inequality, the refugee crisis and world hunger.

Winter has a keen understanding for tech, and he has become proficient in being able to translate that to the small screen. The trailer introduces us into this world while setting up what’s at stake for everyone involved. I’m still not sure how the technology is supposed to liberate the human race, but it’s documentaries like these that will at least make me better informed.

Meow Wolf: Origin Story

There is a quote that comes in around the middle of the trailer for director Morgan Capps and Jilann Spitzmiller’s latest documentary that talks about how the film is an inspiration for artists everywhere. After watching this trailer, you’ll understand why. While the subject matter is about this one collective, it seems more about the broader experience of artistic creation. I’m intrigued by its creativity and its uniqueness, but I’m even more interested in how this narrative somehow drags George R.R. Martin into it all. The process through which artists create co-mingled with a world that doesn’t necessarily reward that creativity is a unique one. To see how this all begins, and then flourishes, looks bananas.

Sink or Swim

I am not sure what director Gilles Lellouche was thinking as he was putting this together, but we do have a controversy here. Much like the films Armageddon and Deep Impact or Volcano and Dante’s Peak, this year has two films starring men who start synchronized swimming teams. I’ll be goshdarned, though, if this doesn’t look like one of the better feel-good movies I could see this year. The trailer is rock solid. We establish who everyone is, what their personality quirk is all about, and then get down to the funny. Yes, it’s broad and slapstick-y, but I love it all.

Super Drags (NSFW)

The synopsis is what sold me immediately:

Three gay co-workers at a department store lead double lives as superhero drag queens, fighting crime and other forces like an evil queen and a conservative politician.

I wasn’t expecting much, but this trailer is pretty much the best laugh I had all week. The characters are out there, the premise is just bizarre, but the overall energy of this trailer cannot be denied. It hearkens back to the kind of animation you would see at the Spike and Mike’s Festival of Animation eons ago, but a lot less grainy. I’m not sure how much of what you see here is representative of the overall show, but as long as it’s 1/10th of what’s promised in this promo, I am all in. And, for what it’s worth, the final third of this thing is just off-the-wall fantastic.

The London Korean Film Festival

One of the issues with film festivals is the amount of choice. Some fests sell themselves (Sundance, for exmaple), but others take a little more coaxing. And for those festivals where it’s a bit more nebulous about whether or not you would want to attend them, it’s a sticky wicket. You have so many choices, so many diverse narratives, and it can almost be too overwhelming to assess. This is where the indomitable talents of the folks at Intermission Film step in.

It makes complete sense that if you have an event where you have so many different tones and stories happening at the same time that you ought to have a hive mind that can create a throughline through them all. The trailer here deliciously tees up the promise for so many positive experiences in a theater. Instead of inferring things from a static website or trying to decipher an ad developed by a jamoke who doesn’t know any better, this trailer is indicative of what means to appreciate movies and the power they possess.

It’s those small moments, those quirks and nuances of snippets that provide no context, that make this trailer more like a love letter than a sales tool.

Nota bene: If you have any suggestions of trailers for possible inclusion in this column, even have a trailer of your own to pitch, please let me know by sending me a note at Christopher_Stipp@yahoo.com or look me up via Twitter at @Stipp

In case you missed them, here are the other trailers we covered at /Film this week:

Naked man dives into shark tank for perilous swim at Toronto aquarium (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/naked-man-dives-into-shark-tank-for-perilous-swim-at-toronto-aquarium-video/ https://briefnews.eu/naked-man-dives-into-shark-tank-for-perilous-swim-at-toronto-aquarium-video/#respond Mon, 15 Oct 2018 20:41:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/naked-man-dives-into-shark-tank-for-perilous-swim-at-toronto-aquarium-video/

A skinny dipper has risked life and limb to swim with sharks in the enclosure for dangerous marine animals at one of the largest aquariums in Toronto, Canada.

The bizarre stunt unfolded at Ripley’s Aquarium on Friday night, when a naked man reportedly dived into the Dangerous Lagoon shark tank and began swimming around.

Eyewitnesses told the CBC that the brazen daredevil ignored warnings from security staff and even did a second backflip into the tank, where spectators can usually watch sharks behind the safety of reinforced glass.

Video footage of the incident has now emerged online, showing the moment the unidentified man paddled around with the sharks. He managed to get out of the tank unscathed and no animals were injured in the prank, the aquarium owners have confirmed.

Ripley’s Aquarium, located near the famous CN Tower, has now provided surveillance footage of the incident to police, reported CTV News. According to the aquarium’s website, the Dangerous Lagoon holds a wide array of sharks as well as two sea turtles and green sawfish.

“The guy seemed totally relaxed and there were sharks like everywhere,” eyewitness Erinn Acland told CBC Toronto. “He appeared to be totally nude and laughing,” she added.

Canada's Taylor Ruck upsets American swim superstar Ledecky https://briefnews.eu/canadas-taylor-ruck-upsets-american-swim-superstar-ledecky/ https://briefnews.eu/canadas-taylor-ruck-upsets-american-swim-superstar-ledecky/#respond Thu, 09 Aug 2018 17:56:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canadas-taylor-ruck-upsets-american-swim-superstar-ledecky/

Canadian teenager Taylor Ruck defeated American star Katie Ledecky as she won gold and set a new meet record in the women's 200-metre freestyle event on the opening day of the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Tokyo.

Ruck's time of one minute 54.44 seconds Thursday lowered the mark set by Ledecky in 2014 — the last time the Pan Pacs were held — by 1.3 seconds. It also bettered the winning time of 1:54.81 Ruck swam at April's Commonwealth Games in Australia, where she captured eight medals.

Ledecky finished third Thursday in 1:55.15. She's the reigning Olympic champion in the 200 free, though it's probably the weakest race for the five-time Olympic gold medallist.

Japan's Ikee Rikako placed second in 1:54.85.

CBC Sports swimming analyst Byron MacDonald called it a "big win" for Ruck, even though Ledecky may not have been at her best on a day when she had to compete in two different races.

"Anytime you beat the best female swimmer in the world… it's a huge step forward," MacDonald said. "Ledecky is almost a mythical figure in the sport of swimming. She has only lost one race in major meets in six years. She has oodles of world records.

"No matter what the circumstances are, it is still a chip in the armour. It shows that Ledecky can be beat."

Ruck, 18, said she had to calm herself down as she prepared to face Ledecky.

"It's the name, I guess, because she is the fastest woman on the planet in a lot of races," said Ruck, who was born in Kelowna, B.C. "My coach kind of saw that, so he told me to focus on my lane and my race."

It wasn't a lost day for Ledecky, who took the 800 in 8:09.13 — the fifth fastest on record — and will be the favourite in the 400 during the four-day event in Tokyo, the biggest meet of the year for most swimmers around the Pacific Rim.

"I knew it was going to be tough," Ledecky said. "It's a tough double. I've done it a number of times, but it's always a difficult thing. I really put a lot of work into not having that happen again. But I still have two more years to go until the big show here in Tokyo."

This year's Pan Pacs come two years out from the Tokyo Olympics. The meet features world swimming powers Australia and the United States and also includes other non-European countries such as Canada, Japan, China and several others.

The Pan Pacific Swimming Championships are one of the toughest swim meets in the 2018 calendar. They happen Aug. 9-12, and Canadians Taylor Ruck and Kylie Masse are looking to medal. 1:56

Canadian backstroke star Kylie Masse is also competing at the Pan Pacs. Penny Oleksiak opted to skip the meet.

CBCSports.ca's live streaming coverage continues Friday at 5:35 a.m. ET and runs through the end of the meet on Sunday.

Rivard breaks para record

Canada's Aurélie Rivard won gold and broke her own world record in the women's 400-metre freestyle S10 event at the Pan Pacific Para-Swimming Championships, which got underway Thursday in Cairns, Australia.

"It was a near-perfect race and I'm really happy with the result, especially technically speaking," said Rivard, who came in as the defending champion.

Other Canadian para swimmers winning medals Thursday were:

  • Angela Marina — gold, women's 200 freestyle S14
  • Justine Morrier — gold, women's 100 breaststroke SB14
  • Katarina Roxon — gold, women's 100 breaststroke SB8
  • Tess Routliffe — gold, women's 100 breaststroke SB7
  • Philippe Vachon — silver, men's 400 freestyle S8
  • Alec Elliot — silver, men's 400 freestyle S10

Summer is here in full-force, so it’s time to embrace big, dumb blockbusters. Like The Meg, a movie about Jason Statham fighting a Megalodon shark that just happens to not be extinct, somehow. I’m sure the film will explain this, but really, who cares? We don’t need answers. We just need to see Statham vs. shark. While you wait for The Meg to splash into theaters, watch a new The Meg TV spot below.

The Meg TV Spot

Say what you will about The Meg – the marketing department has been doing a pretty good job selling it. There is no chance in hell a film like this will turn out to be high art, but at the very least, it should deliver on the promise of seeing Jason Statham stare-down a massive shark. Will there be a scene where Statham punches the snark on its big stupid shark face? We can only hope.

The Meg is adapted from Steve Alten’s 1997 novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror. The book was cashing-in on the Jurassic Park craze of pitting modern-day humans against prehistoric monsters. The concept – man vs. Megalodon – was inherently cinematic. But it took a while for the book to find its way to the screen. Disney hooked the rights to the book immediately, but the movie floundered in development hell for years. By 2015, Warner Bros. had control of the rights, and hired Eli Roth to helm. Roth eventually sailed away from the project, citing creative differences. Jon Turteltaub, director of the Nic Cage vs. America’s Secrets movie National Treasure, ended up netting the job after Roth left.

And now here we are. Statham plays “expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor”, who is “recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew-and the ocean itself-from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. What no one could have imagined is that, years before, Taylor had encountered this same terrifying creature. Now, teamed with Suyin, he must confront his fears and risk his own life to save everyone trapped below…bringing him face to face once more with the greatest and largest predator of all time.”

I love that Statham’s character encountered this big-ass shark once before, but apparently no one knows about it. I guess he just kept it a secret for some reason? Smooth move, Statham.

The Meg opens August 10, 2018.

Sarah Reid

Sarah Reid

June 8, 2018

Each Southern Hemisphere winter, a natural phenomenon occurs off a remote stretch of the South Australian coast that will leave you blushing, finds Sarah Reid.

Shimmering like a hyperactive rainbow, the male cuttlefish suddenly makes his move, snaking an orangey tentacle around the female’s head and drawing it towards his own mouth. It looks like he’s about to eat her, but this mollusc has a decidedly more X-rated motive.

“The male actually squirts sperm into the female’s mouth, and she fertilizes it internally before depositing the eggs under a rock shelf,” marine educator and dive instructor Carl Charter had explained during my pre-snorkel briefing—adding that the kinky copulation sessions of Australian giant cuttlefish (Sepia apama) can last up to half an hour.

Despite the surplus of males during the breeding season, the females are a picky bunch. In 2015, cuttlefish researcher Dr. Alexandra Schnell discovered that females can physically ‘swipe left’ by displaying a white stripe along the side of their body to indicate when they’re not interested. Some males inevitably don’t get the message, but at least the ladyfolk have a chance to make their intentions clear.

RELATED: Man versus nature in Australia’s’s far, far north

Bobbing above the frenzy in my wetsuit, I’m so entranced by the sex fest—which was filmed in this very spot for David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II—that I forget how cold it is for a minute. The water needs to be around 57 degrees Fahrenheit for the females to lay, and after about 30 minutes paddling around in water a few degrees cooler than that, I’m spent.

“Males are even partial to a bit of cross-dressing,” he says. “You’ll see smaller males change their color to mimic the females so they can move in on a mate without the big boys noticing.”

Following a trial run last winter, July will see Adelaide-based operator PureSA launch overnight tours from the capital during the season’s peak, including a cuttlefish info session and guided snorkel with Charter, who is also an underwater photographer, and Program Manager at Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries, a Whyalla not-for-profit that aims to foster appreciation and conservation of the marine environment.

If you’ve got your own wheels, Whyalla Diving Services can kit you out with snorkeling or scuba diving gear, and arrange a guide if you need one. During the past year, a shelter, picnic tables and change rooms have been installed at Stony Point, which is handy if you’re planning to make a day of it out here. You can even make a night of it, with a handful of designated camping spots nearby (though you’ll have to head into town for food).

Despite switching my wetsuit for three layers of warm clothing, I still can’t feel all of my toes by the time we make a pit stop in the Clare Valley, just over halfway back to Adelaide, for a restorative Shiraz. Any by the way, if there’s one thing you need after dropping in on 200,000 cephalopods literally shagging themselves to death, it’s a restorative Shiraz. Perhaps two.
