Sleep is an important part of everyday life. Not having enough can have a detrimental effect on a person’s health, put you in a bad mood and result in lack of focus.

If you don’t get enough sleep you can be at risk of serious medical conditions like obesity, heart disease and diabetes.

During a heatwave it can become stressful when lying in bed unable to keep cool, making it hard to drift off and then stay asleep.

Silent Night sleep expert, Dr Nerina Ramlakhan, says in order for people to sleep well, there needs to be “fractional temperature difference between our body and brain”.

To help achieve this, one of her top tips is to wash your feet with cold water before getting into bed.

Running your wrists under cold water too can help you cool down even more.

Dr Ramlakhan also recommends using light bed sheets and a summer duvet – 4.5 tog, and stopping your bedroom overheating during the day by keeping curtains and blinds closed.

She adds: “It is essential to stay well hydrated during the day and most importantly, don’t fret too much if you can’t sleep.

“Use the time to rest and think positive thoughts to help you be extra productive the next day.”

BCA Chiropractor, Tim Hutchful recommends using a cold press, but on specific parts of your body.

He said: “The pulse points on your body can cool the rest of you effectively.

“Place a cold flannel or ice cubes in a plastic bag on your wrists and neck and you’ll be surprised by the effectiveness. Just don’t let them melt in your bed.”

How much sleep should we be getting each night, and what’s the recommended amount for adults?

How much sleep we need, depends on our age, say sleep experts.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, while newborns need 14 to 17 hours sleep, and teenagers need eight to ten hours sleep, different stages of an adult’s life require different amounts of slumber.

A young adult aged between 18 and 25 should get seven to nine hours sleep a night.

An adult between the ages of 26 and 64 should also get seven to nine hours.

For older adults (65 years and over) only seven to eight hours sleep is required.

Contending with hay fever symptoms – such as sneezing and coughing, itchy, red or watery eyes, and an itchy throat – at night can mean missing out on valuable sleep time. Sleep is important because not having enough can put you in a bad mood and result in lack of focus.

So what can you do to ensure a better night’s rest? There are five simple tips you can follow, as recommended by Sealy UK, the NHS, and Allergy UK.

Does Sweating Burn Fat? Find out the Truth Here https://briefnews.eu/does-sweating-burn-fat-find-out-the-truth-here/ https://briefnews.eu/does-sweating-burn-fat-find-out-the-truth-here/#respond Tue, 22 May 2018 22:00:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/does-sweating-burn-fat-find-out-the-truth-here/

When I was training martial arts years ago, there was a guy training while wearing a huge insulated jacket in the gym. It was 25 degrees outside. He was trying to slim down for a fight he would have 3 months from then. He was sweating like a pig (speaking about the iron ore smelting,[1] of course). In the training session, you felt sweat from this guy dropping on your face. That guy honestly thought that losing sweat means losing fat.

Does sweating burn fat? I wish I would’ve had the necessary knowledge back then, because if so, I could have told him that it doesn’t work this way.

Why we sweat

We sweat to minimize body temperature. Our body tries to be on a constant 37°C body temperature with slight fluctuations during the day. At this temperature, the enzyme activities of your body work the best.

Once your body exceeds these comfortable 37°C, it activates your sweat glands. You start to lose water along with salts, sugar and tiny amounts of waste products. You have about 2 to 4 million sweat glands in your body that cool you down.

The amount you sweat heavily depends on your genetics. The temperature and humidity level does influence your sweat rate, but so does your gender, age and fitness level.

You sweat more in heat and humidity, but that doesn’t mean you’re burning more calories or fat. It simply means your body has to release perspiration to bring your body temperature down. People with a higher amount of body fat tend to sweat a lot more because they have a greater amount of body mass to cool down.

Sweat and body fat

Fat gets released from fat cells to provide your body with energy. Your body breaks down the fat into its parts — fatty acids and glycerol — which are then metabolized.

Fat is quite hard to metabolize, but it’s possible. Read this article to see how I’ve lost my body fat or get in contact if you’re looking for a coach. The more energy you need, the more your body pulls from your fat cells. The bodily function that causes you to use fat for energy operates independently of the one that causes you to sweat.

Purposefully exercising in a hot or humid environment doesn’t mean you’re working harder to burn more fat. You’re simply raising your body temperature to a point that prompts you to sweat more.

When I was younger, I also thought that sweating increases the rate of body fat that you burn. If you sweat more, it simply means that you’re working harder, am I right?

But we have to realize that sitting on a beach on a 100-degree day doesn’t require a lot of energy and doesn’t use notable amounts of fat. You sweat because your body is just in need of serious thermoregulation.

On the other hand, when you work hard in sub-zero temperatures such as jogging in winter, you still burn fat even if your body doesn’t sweat as much to cool you down.

Weight loss or just water gone?

You may notice that after a shirt-drenching workout, the number on the scale has gone down. You haven’t dropped a few pounds of fat, but you have lost a fair amount of fluids. This is also why training with a jacket can make sense for a martial artist to lose weight short-term (to fit the right weight-class), but not months ahead of the competition.

But for normal people looking to get fit, you should replace that lost weight with water or a sports drink to avoid dehydration.

If you enter a workout dehydrated, you may not sweat at all. Your body increases in temperature but is unable to cool down efficiently again. This results in a decreased ability to perform. This is also why hydration is critical to reaching your performance goals.

Consume about half a litres until you begin a workout and at least 0.3 litres every 20 minutes during the workout session. In the end, you can drink 0.5 litres again (this might also help in muscle buildup).

Pro Tip: Weigh yourself before and after the workout and then compare the two numbers. When the scale says you’ve lost weight, drink fluids immediately. At best 0.5 litres to make up for every kilogram that you’ve lost.

Conclusion

You’ve probably heard about “Sweat is fat crying”. While I know it’s just a saying to get people stay motivated, now you know that it’s not true.

Sweating more doesn’t mean losing more fat. You sweat because your body is just in need of thermoregulation.

The harder you work out, the more sweaty you get because you are raising your body temperature to a point that prompts you to sweat more to cool down your body.

VITAMIN D, commonly known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’, is considered to be one of the most important vitamins required for the functioning of a healthy body. So what are the symptoms of a vitamin D deficiency?

Vitamin D is best gained through certain foods, supplements and adequate sun exposure.

But with the British weather giving us very little sunshine, and research into the link between sun exposure and skin cancer becoming more prevalent, many of us take greater care of our skin by guarding it from the sun.

The problem with this is that we end up depriving our bodies of the essential vitamin D, impacting our health in more ways than we know.

To help determine what you need to be looking out for, Naturopathic Nutritionist Amy Morris, from Water for Health, shares her tell-tale signs that you’re not getting enough.

Hair Loss

Hair loss is often attributed to stress, according to Amy, which is the most common cause. But when hair loss is severe, it is recommended to look at whether it is the result of a nutrient deficiency. Vitamin D, in particular, is understood to be one of the most important nutrients required for the body to function.

Amy said: “The negative impact of a vitamin D deficiency on the body can lead to conditions that cause hair loss, and there is evidence to suggest that vitamin D is directly involved in supporting the process of hair growth and hair follicle health.”

Unexplained Fatigue

Feeling tired often has many causes, but vitamin D is commonly overlooked as one of them.

Amy said: “Individuals diagnosed with a vitamin D deficiency are known to complain of low energy and muscle fatigue, with long-term vitamin D supplementation being shown to improve these symptoms.”

Excessive Sweating

Chronic sweating, particularly on your forehead, is a known indicator that your body is lacking in vitamin D, says Amy.

She added: “This form of sweating is likely to take place when the individual has done very little, often making it an embarrassing situation but one which can be dealt with easily by upping your vitamin D intake.”

Weak Bones

Vitamin D is essential in maintaining bone health, so pain in your bones or lower back could be an indicator that you’re not producing enough of the vitamin.

Amy said: “Studies have shown that people with low vitamin D levels were two times as likely to have aching bones in their legs, ribs or joints compared with people who had sufficient levels of the vitamin. This is a dangerous and important symptom to look out for, as it can contribute to the risk of developing osteoporosis and fractured bones later in life. To combat this, I would recommend taking UnoCardio1000, a unique, high quality supplement which contains omega-3 as well as vitamin D3 to alleviate deficiencies in the body and help maintain healthy bone structure.”

You’re More Prone to Colds and Flu

It is not a coincidence that cold and flu season correlates with the winter months, when our vitamin D levels are particularly low due to lower sun exposure.

Amy explained: “A key role of vitamin D is keeping your immune system strong enough to fight off illnesses and infections. If you’re getting bed bound a lot more often than you would like, there is a strong chance you are suffering from a vitamin D deficiency.”

You’re feeling blue

There has been various research studies which indicate a link between vitamin D deficiency and depression. The reason for this is because vitamin D is important for adequate brain function, particularly in regard to the release of ‘serotonin’, known as the happiness chemical.

Amy said: “Subsequently, insufficient nutrient levels are likely to inflict negative reactions in the brain which play a role in enhancing depression and other mental illnesses.

“It’s important to remember that vitamin D is called the sunshine vitamin for a reason, which is why people often feel SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) in the winter months, especially, as a result of shorter days and longer periods of darkness. If you find yourself feeling ‘down’ in the winter, it is likely that your body is reacting to the lack of vitamin D.”

Vitamin D supplements can help to improve immune health, and helps the body to get the nutrients needed to keep bones, teeth and muscles healthy. But, the vitamin could also lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases, researchers claim.

Middlesex and Somerset sweating on relegation decision from ECB https://briefnews.eu/middlesex-and-somerset-sweating-on-relegation-decision-from-ecb/ https://briefnews.eu/middlesex-and-somerset-sweating-on-relegation-decision-from-ecb/#respond Wed, 11 Oct 2017 17:37:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/middlesex-and-somerset-sweating-on-relegation-decision-from-ecb/

The ECB confirmed yesterday that Middlesex’s appeal against a two-points penalty for a slow over-rate in the match abandoned when a crossbow bolt was fired onto the field of play at The Oval in August is being considered.

And with Somerset pipping Middlesex to safety by one point in the final match of the season, relegation and survival will be settled in the post-season for the second year running.

Middlesex chief executive Richard Goatley confirmed the club had been initially told they had no route to appeal the penalty despite the abandonment dictating they had no time to make up their over-rate.

But a sympathetic hearing from ECB chairman Colin Graves encouraged them to lodge a fresh submission which has been passed on to Tim O’Gorman, chair of the CDC.

O’Gorman, who has already got his hands full with the Ben Stokes incident, is expected to deliver a verdict early next week.

Goatley said he was confident the commission would be “competent enough to reach the right decision”.

Should Middlesex be reprieved and Somerset relegated in their place it would be the second year running the ECB not the final table have dictated the winners and losers.

Last year Hampshire were reprieved despite finishing second to bottom after Durham, a place above them in the table, were penalised with relegation after accepting a £3.8million financial bailout.
