A Facebook executive was the target of a swatting hoax that resulted in armed police briefly detaining him and searching his home as they investigated a false report of an active shooting and hostage situation involving pipe bombs, officials with the Palo Alto, California, Police Department said.

The incident started a little after 9pm on Tuesday when someone using an untraceable number identified himself as a Facebook executive and reported he had shot his wife and taken his children hostage, department officials reported in a statement. The male caller went on to say he had deployed pipe bombs and planned to harm police if they came to the residence.

The call resulted in a “significant police response” that included trained crisis negotiators. They used a public address system to contact the people inside the home. Two residents came outside as police searched the residence. Police ultimately determined that there had been no shots had been fired, no pipe bombs had been deployed, and no children were in the house.

Man pleads guilty to swatting attack that led to death of Kansas man

Federal prosecutors in Kansas announced Tuesday that a 25-year-old Californian has admitted that he caused a Wichita man to be killed at the hands of local police during a swatting attack late last year.

Swatting is a way to harass or threaten someone by calling in a false threat to law enforcement, and, when successful, it usually results in a police SWAT team showing up needlessly at its victim’s house.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Kansas, Tyler Barriss pleaded guilty to making a false report resulting in a death, cyberstalking, and conspiracy. He also admitted that he was part of “dozens of similar crimes in which no one was injured.”

Federal prosecutors have unsealed an indictment against three men involved in the December death of a Kansas man, Andrew Finch. Finch was shot by police officers after one of the defendants, Tyler Barriss, made a call to 911 dispatchers about a completely made-up hostage situation at Finch’s address.

County prosecutors in Kansas have already charged Barriss with manslaughter. Now he faces a slew of additional charges at the federal level, including cyberstalking, making threats across state lines, wire fraud, and conspiracy. And while the county charges targeted Barriss alone, the feds are also charging two others involved in the incident.

According to the indictment, Shane Gaskill, 19, and Casey Viner, 18, were playing Call of Duty: World War II on December 28, when they got into a dispute over events in the game. Viner became so upset that he asked Barriss—who had a reputation for making SWAT calls—to “swat” Gaskill.

Authorities have decided not to file charges against a Wichita police officer who shot and killed 28-year-old Andrew Finch last December, the Wichita Eagle reports. The deadly confrontation occurred after a man made a hoax 911 call posing as a deranged gunman who was holding his family hostage.

Police say the caller was Tyler Barriss, a 25-year-old Los Angeles man with a history of engaging in similar stunts. Barriss was allegedly recruited to make the call by a gamer who was angry about a dispute involving a Call of Duty bet with a second gamer. But the second gamer, who was Barriss’ intended target, lied about his address. Instead, he gave out a random address which belonged to Finch, who had nothing whatsoever to do with the Call of Duty bet.

The officer who shot Finch has not been identified. But District Attorney Marc Bennett said on Thursday that he saw Finch reaching toward his waistband and believed that he was reaching for a weapon. In reality, Finch was unarmed.

A Los Angeles man accused of making a hoax phone call that led to the death of an innocent man in Wichita, Kansas, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter. 25-year-old Tyler Barriss was arrested in Los Angeles late last month, and authorities there extradited him to Kansas. He made his first appearance in a Kansas courtroom on Friday, court records show.

Authorities believe that Barriss made a hoax phone call that sent police to the home of an innocent man, Andrew Finch, on December 28. Finch opened the door with his hands up. But when he briefly lowered his hands toward his waistband, a police officer shot him, believing that Finch could be reaching for a gun.

The incident appears to have originated with an online feud over a $ 1.50 Call of Duty bet. One of the parties to that dispute reportedly approached online user SWAuTistic, who had a reputation for initiating “swatting” pranks against online gamers. SWAuTistic called the Wichita police, pretending to be a deranged man who had already shot his father and threatened to shoot other members of his family.

‘Let me see my son’ asks mother of Kansas man killed by police in ‘swatting’ prank https://briefnews.eu/let-me-see-my-son-asks-mother-of-kansas-man-killed-by-police-in-swatting-prank/ https://briefnews.eu/let-me-see-my-son-asks-mother-of-kansas-man-killed-by-police-in-swatting-prank/#respond Wed, 03 Jan 2018 23:48:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/let-me-see-my-son-asks-mother-of-kansas-man-killed-by-police-in-swatting-prank/ Almost a week after police killed a Wichita, Kansas man responding to a hoax ‘swatting’ call, his mother is demanding police let her bury her son. A California man who made the call may face murder charges.

Andrew Finch, 28, was shot and killed by Wichita police last week. On Tuesday, his mother Lisa wrote a letter to Wichita mayor Jeff Longwell and Police Chief Gordon Ramsay, listing eight questions. Among other things, Finch is asking why authorities have not revealed the identity of the officer who shot and killed her son, why officers handcuffed the family and interrogated them after Finch was shot, and where her son’s body is being kept, according to local outlet WKTR.

She asked why “Wichita City leadership is compounding our grief and sorrow, by keeping my son from us,” according to WKTR.

“Please let me see my son’s lifeless body,” she wrote. “I want to hold him and say goodbye. Please immediately return his body to us.”

Wichita Police Chief Gordon Ramsay said none of the officers at the scene were members of the SWAT team and were not trained to handle hostage situations, according to the Wichita Eagle. The initial 911 call showed up as a local number, he said. “The information I have, it was a spoofed number.”

Police have released portions of video of the incident. “We believe what it shows… His (Finch’s) hands go up and down and around his waistband, and the one arm goes out at about a 45-degree angle,” Ramsay said.

The Wichita incident was the first death due to “swatting” in the US, as far as Ramsay was aware.

“There will be a thorough review of this,” the chief said Tuesday evening. “We want to do everything we can so nothing like this never happens again, ever.”

The police officer who killed Finch has not been identified by name. Officials said he was on paid leave pending an investigation. He is a seven-year veteran of the department. Finch’s family has said through their attorney that they want the officer to be charged.

“Justice for the Finch family constitutes criminal charges against the shooting officer and any other liable officers as well as damages against the city of Wichita for the policies and practices of its Police Department,” the family’s lawyer, Andrew Stroth, told AP.

Tyler Barriss, 25, was arrested Friday in California in connection with the shooting, after Wichita police issued a fugitive warrant. After a court hearing in Los Angeles Wednesday, Barriss was confined to jail without bond. He is expected to be extradited to Kansas within weeks.

Barriss is alleged to have made the hoax call as a harassment tactic known as “swatting.” He was reportedly feuding with another person over an online video game, and called police to what he believed was his desired victim’s address, telling them there was a suspect who had shot his father and was holding the rest of his family hostage. The responding officers arrived to what was actually Finch’s address and one of them opened fire. Police said Finch had moved his hand toward his waist. He had been unarmed.

This is not Barriss’ first run-in with the law. In 2015, he was sentenced to two years and eight months in jail for making as many as 20 swatting calls and false bomb reports against Los Angeles-area schools and a television station, according to KNBC.

Barriss is charged with making a false alarm, which entails calling emergency services and knowingly providing false information. It is considered a low-level felony in Kansas and carries a maximum of 34 months in prison, though prosecutors could add more charges depending on the results of a police investigation.

He could also be charged with second-degree murder for unintentionally causing a death by reckless actions, Elizabeth Cateforis, a law professor at the University of Kansas, told the Sacramento Bee.

The alleged “swatter” behind Thursday’s police killing of a Wichita, Kansas, man has been arrested.

Tyler Barriss, a 25-year old from South Los Angeles, was taken into custody Friday night, according to the local ABC News affiliate. (ABC also notes that “Glendale police arrested a 22-year-old man with the same name for making bomb threats to KABC-TV” back in 2015.) NBC News, speaking to unnamed local “sources” in LA, says that Barriss “had been living at a transitional recovery center.”

Barriss is alleged to have a called in a lengthy threat to Wichita police on Thursday night after a Call of Duty game in which two teammates got into an altercation over a $ 1.50 wager. Screenshots posted to various Twitter accounts show the dispute escalating. Shortly thereafter, the Wichita police received a call alleging that someone at that address had killed his father, taken his family hostage, poured gasoline around the home, and was ready to light it on fire. Cops descended on the area and cordoned it off. When 28-year old Andrew Fitch opened the front door of his home to see why all the lights were flashing outside, he was shot and killed.

Thursday night Wichita police killed Andrew Finch after responding to a call claiming a man at his address had shot someone and was holding others hostage. That call was a hoax, commonly referred to as “swatting,” and in this case, it’s apparently linked to a Call of Duty match, where one player passed a fake address to another before someone called the police to it. Now NBC News reports that police in Los Angeles have arrested 25-year-old Tyler Barriss, who is believed to have made the call inciting the incident.

Barriss may be the “SWAutistic” who tweeted about making the call and later participated in a phone interview with the DramaAlert show on YouTube. An LAPD spokesperson confirmed to Engadget that Barriss is in custody, no bail has been set, and that they are working with Wichita police on the case. The LA Times reported in 2015 that he had been arrested for calling in a bomb threat to a TV studio, and in the YouTube video, SWAutistic claims to be responsible for bomb threats that interrupted an MLG Call of Duty event in Dallas earlier this month.

Wichita police release 911 call, bodycam footage from ‘swatting’ shooting (GRAPHIC VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/wichita-police-release-911-call-bodycam-footage-from-swatting-shooting-graphic-video/ https://briefnews.eu/wichita-police-release-911-call-bodycam-footage-from-swatting-shooting-graphic-video/#respond Sat, 30 Dec 2017 05:25:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/wichita-police-release-911-call-bodycam-footage-from-swatting-shooting-graphic-video/ Wichita police have released both the prank 911 call that led to an officer shooting an unarmed man and the body cam footage of the shooting. The mother of the victim blames police for murdering her son.

On Friday, the Wichita Police Department released the hoax call they received from an unknown suspect about a domestic dispute involving his father.

At 6:18pm, an officer working at the security desk at City Hall called 911 with the suspect on the line. However, when the dispatcher answered the phone, the caller was no longer on the line.

The responding officer described the situation to the dispatcher, telling her the caller said his mother just hit his dad over the head with a handgun. The officer explained that the caller was having trouble connecting to the police, and gave her the suspect’s number.

“I have his phone number, but for some reason, either he is hanging up or I can’t transfer it,” the officer said.

The dispatcher then made an outbound call to the suspect, who told the dispatcher that he had an argument with his parents and shot his father.

“They were arguing and I shot him in the head and he’s not breathing anymore,” the caller said.

The dispatcher asked several questions about where the caller was located in the house and what kind of gun he had. The caller gave vague answers that he was in his mother’s room, pointing his father’s black handgun at his mother and younger brother.

“I’m just pointing the gun at them, making sure they stay in the closet – my mom and my little brother,” the suspect said.

“Okay, is there any way that you can put the gun up?” the dispatcher asked.

“No. Are you guys sending someone over here, cause I’m definitely not going to put it away,” the suspect said.

The dispatcher continued to ask questions to try to keep the caller on the line. After a moment, the caller threatened to burn the house down.

“I’m thinking about – cause I already poured gasoline all over the house. I might just set it on fire,” the caller said.

“Okay, well we don’t need to do that, okay?” the dispatcher said.

“In a little bit I might,” the caller responded.

The caller then asked the dispatcher to verify if the police had the correct address and repeated it with the zip code. The police continued to try to keep the caller on the line, asking about the house, and which direction it was facing, but the caller didn’t seem to know.

“I don’t know it’s just facing the street,” the caller said. “My dad isn’t breathing. It’s kind of giving me anxiety – making me like, paranoid.”

The prank caller also described the home as having one story, when it turned out the house had two, which wasn’t picked up on by police.

The dispatcher then asked the caller about his race, trying to keep him on the line.

The caller went silent, only saying “it was an accident” before the call ended.

In a later call released by the police, officers said that they were unable to call the suspect’s number back.

Many of those who make ‘swatting’ calls have used caller ID spoofing or other technology that disguise their real numbers as being local, according to 911.gov.

The Wichita Police Department also released body cam footage from the responding officers at the scene at the end of the dispatch call.

When responding officers arrived at 1033 W. McCormick Street, Deputy Police Chief Troy Livingston said the police were ready for a large-scale situation. There were officers posted at every corner of the house when Andrew Finch opened the door and walked out toward police.

Deputy Police Chief Troy Livingston said that officers instructed Finch to put his hands in the air and walk toward them. When Finch put his hands down, the officers assumed he was pulling a gun and fired at Finch.

“The officers on the north side of the street feared the male pulled a weapon from his waistband, retrieved a gun and was in the process of pointing it at the officers to the east. Fearing for those officers’ safety, the officer on the north side fired one round,” Livingston said, according to the Wichita Eagle.

Finch, 28, died at the local hospital. He was unarmed.

The officers removed four people from the house, but found there were no hostages or dead people inside.

During a press conference Friday, Livingston called the shooting a “tragic and senseless act,” and blamed the prank callers.

“The irresponsible acts of a prankster put people’s lives at risk,” he said. “The incident is a nightmare for everyone involved, including the family and our police department. Due to the action of a prankster, we have an innocent victim. If the false police call had not been made, we would not have been there.”

However, Lisa Finch, Andrew’s mother, blames the police for murdering her son, despite the prank call.

“What gives the cops the right to open fire? Why didn’t they give him the same warning they gave us? That cop murdered my son,” Lisa Finch, told the Eagle.

Livingston said police are working with federal authorities to find the person who made the original “swatting” call.

‘Swatting’ is a term that refers to making a false report with emergency police with the intention of getting a Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) team sent to another person’s house.

Alleged swatting hoax ends in the death of a father of two https://briefnews.eu/alleged-swatting-hoax-ends-in-the-death-of-a-father-of-two/ https://briefnews.eu/alleged-swatting-hoax-ends-in-the-death-of-a-father-of-two/#respond Fri, 29 Dec 2017 23:18:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/alleged-swatting-hoax-ends-in-the-death-of-a-father-of-two/

Yesterday evening, a 28-year-old Kansas man was shot by police after the station received a call about a hostage situation taking place at the man’s residence. “It was a shooting call involving hostages,” Deputy Police Chief Troy Livingston said during a press conference last night. “The original call, we were told that someone had an argument with their mother and dad was accidentally shot. And that now that person was holding mother, brother and sister hostage. We learned through that call that a father was deceased, and had been shot in the head. That was the information we were working off of.” But that information turned out to be wrong and shortly after the incident, reports began to surface online that the call was part of a “swatting” stunt — a hoax wherein someone makes a false police report in order to fuel a large law enforcement response.

Here’s what seems to have gone down. Two individuals were playing Call of Duty and got into an argument online over a game with a $ 1.50 wager. One of them, a person with the Twitter handle @SWauTistic, threatened to swat user @7aLeNT. The latter then provided an address that wasn’t actually their own in response to the threat. Shortly thereafter, @SWauTistic allegedly called in the false report, which led to a police response at the provided address. Andrew Finch, who lived at the address, reportedly went to the front door in response to the commotion and was shot. “As he came to the front door, one of our officers discharged his weapon,” said Livingston. The police haven’t said whether Finch had a weapon at the time, but his family has said there were no guns in the house. The officer who fired the shot is a seven-year department veteran who will be put on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.

Once the story began attracting media coverage, @SWauTistic tweeted that the house he swatted was on the news, which was then followed by a tweet saying he didn’t get anyone killed because he wasn’t the person who shot Finch.

KrebsOnSecurity reports that the individual then changed his Twitter handle to @GoredTutor36, but not before KrebsOnSecurity got its hands on weeks’ worth of the original account’s tweets. The person behind the account has claimed credit for a number of swatting hoaxes and other threats including one that led to the evacuation of the Dallas Convention Center earlier this month, a bomb threat at a Florida high school in November and the threat that caused the FCC to pause its net neutrality vote a couple of weeks ago.

In direct message conversations with KrebsOnSecurity, the person running @GoredTutor36 said that they had remorse over Finch’s death but that they would not be turning themselves in. “People will eventually (most likely those who know me) tell me to turn myself in or something. I can’t do that; though I know its [sic] morally right. I’m too scared admittedly,” they wrote. They also said, “Bomb threats are more fun and cooler than swats in my opinion and I should have just stuck to that. But I began making $ doing some swat requests.” The person also noted that the thrill of such hoaxes “comes from having to hide from police via net connections.”

Finch was a father of two children — a two-year-old and a seven-year-old — and his family said he didn’t play video games.
