Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin and head coach Claude Julien tell the 13th overall pick from the 2017 NHL draft he's close to being a regular in the league. The 19-year-old player, his confidence soaring, also believes he's on the cusp of NHL employment. But there's work to be done.

"They want me to play at a higher pace," says Nick Suzuki, the key return for the Canadiens in the Sept. 9 trade that sent captain Max Pacioretty to the Vegas Golden Knights, who visit the Bell Centre in Montreal on Saturday night. "I got used to playing at an NHL pace [at camp] and I have to play a step ahead of everybody [in junior] and try my best to dominate every game."

Former Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Todd Gill, in his second season coaching Suzuki with the Owen Sound Attack, points out the team's first-year captain only needs to be told things once.

This guy's got it all — the hockey sense, an NHL shot, he sees the ice very well and can pass the puck with the best of them.— Attack head coach Todd Gill on forward Nick Suzuki

In his OHL return, Suzuki didn’t register a point and had a minus-3 rating, but rebounded the next night with a hat trick against the top-ranked Ottawa 67s before adding three assists versus Sarnia four days later.

The native of London, Ont., has points in all but three of 13 games since, recording 13 goals, 25 points and a plus-9 rating across 16 contests, putting Suzuki on track for a second consecutive 100-point season.

"This guy's got it all — the hockey sense, an NHL shot, he sees the ice very well and can pass the puck with the best of them," says Gill, who played 1,007 NHL regular-season games. "But the No. 1 thing with Nick this season is his pace of play has really improved."

Late cut by Team Canada

Earlier in his career, Suzuki says, he didn't move his feet while reading the play but is learning to reach loose pucks and opposing players quicker.

Windsor Spitfires head coach Trevor Letowski, who was as an assistant with Canada’s gold-medal winning national junior team last year in Buffalo, told CBC Sports the urgency and compete level in Suzuki’s game didn’t meet the coaching staff’s expectations during the selection camp last December.

"He wasn't quite there to take on a big role at a world-level tourney," says Letowski, the former NHL forward who won't be part of new head coach Tim Hunter's staff when the world juniors begins Dec. 26 in Vancouver and Victoria. "Nick is such a smart player, kind of deceptive and one of those guys that can make an impact every time he's on the ice, but he just wasn't quite able to create like he had in the OHL. I would guess he's ready now to do that."

Now that the saga is finally over in Montreal, Rob Pizzo explores which team's fanbase should be happier after the trade. 1:59

A late cut of Team Canada, the five-foot-11, 200-plus-pound Suzuki is hoping to catch the eye of Hunter, who takes over from Dominique Ducharme, now an assistant to Julien in Montreal. His audition begins in earnest Thursday night in Sarnia, Ont., when Suzuki will captain Team OHL against the Russian national junior squad as part of the Canada Russia Series.

"I try to get to where the puck's going to be before it's there," says Suzuki, who was further motivated to reach the NHL while watching Vegas' run to the Stanley Cup Final from the press box. "I think I've always been good at reading the play and using my hockey IQ to break up plays."

Attack forward Nick Suzuki is 11th in OHL scoring this season with 25 points on 13 goals and 12 assists in 16 games, putting him on track for a second consecutive 100-point campaign. (Submitted by Terry Wilson/OHL Images)

Overage defenceman Sean Durzi, who joined Suzuki in representing Owen Sound at a Canada-Russia Series game in Sudbury last year, believes his teammate has taken his game to another level this season.

Elite hockey sense

"His ability to do the small things that not a lot of people notice, like creating time and space for other players, is next-level stuff," says Durzi, who lives with the same billet family as Suzuki.

A natural centre who has mostly played on the wing the past two seasons, Suzuki believes he not only was born with an elite hockey sense but feels he has studied the game and viewed it differently than others his age.

Since childhood, he has admired the play of Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby and wears No. 37 because he models his game after Boston's Patrice Bergeron.

"I think he's one of the best players in the NHL at stealing pucks from guys, lifting their sticks and turning defence into offence," Suzuki says of the Bruins centre. "Crosby, just the way he protects the puck low [in the offensive zone]. He's probably the best in the NHL using his body to shield the puck in the corner."

In Owen Sound, Gill counts Suzuki among the best at lifting the sticks of opposing players and retrieving pucks on a back check.

'Sometimes he creates things that aren't even there'

He has also tried learning the moves of NHL star Connor McDavid, concentrating on the Edmonton Oilers forward as he skates down the wing at top speed.

"You see Connor fly with the puck and still do amazing things," said Durzi, "and I think Nick has brought that aspect to his game. The way he's able to make a great play or pass when he's flying down the wing or through the middle [of the ice] is second to none in the league right now.

"Sometimes he creates things that aren't even there and to have that IQ is what's going to make you an elite player in this league and even at the next level."

Suzuki and the Attack will be hosting Erie on Saturday at the same time Pacioretty attempts to erase a poor start with Vegas — slowed somewhat by injury — that has seen the five-time 30-goal scorer find the net just twice in his first 11 games after signing a four-year, $ 28-million US deal with the Golden Knights.

Gill continues to stress to Suzuki the importance of being Owen Sound's best player, most effective defensive forward and top forward every game. For the most part, the 23rd captain in Attack history has responded.

"The No. 1 job in the NHL is consistency," says the coach. "That will get you to the next level. Nick wants to be a leader, the go-to guy.

"Off the ice, he's an incredibly grounded person. He's almost a Bob Gainey-type captain where he leads by example on the ice and when he does talk in the dressing room, the players understand they should listen."

Jimny Cricket, It’s a Suzuki 4WD Electric Thingy! https://briefnews.eu/jimny-cricket-its-a-suzuki-4wd-electric-thingy/ https://briefnews.eu/jimny-cricket-its-a-suzuki-4wd-electric-thingy/#respond Tue, 26 Sep 2017 10:15:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jimny-cricket-its-a-suzuki-4wd-electric-thingy/ Suzuki-e-Survivor-front

Craigslist and eBay have preserved the Suzuki Samurai experience, that innocent expression of 1980s beach cruising. This Suzuki e-Survivor concept premiering at the Tokyo auto show is only a Japanese dream, sadly, and while details are fuzzy, we know that despite the company’s claim of “Excitement for Everyone, in Everywhere,” this future ute won’t apply to us.

Suzuki-e-Survivor-rear

The e-Survivor is a hard-core runt with two seats, four wheel-mounted electric motors, and transparent doors to expose Day-Glo shorts. It’s built on a ladder frame and features an old-school T-top–style brace running down the center of the roof. Its substantial ground clearance, short overhangs, and total absence of axles could ensure epic electric off-roading. The design is so symmetrical that the rear uses what appear to be the same lighting cutouts and bumpers as the front. From a manufacturing perspective, the e-Survivor could survive on low build costs alone.

Suzuki goes basic on interior furnishings until the ignition switches on. Then it goes ballistic, with a lawn-ornament orb that becomes a 3D display, another screen on the steering-wheel hub, a full-width dash screen with integrated side-view camera displays, and more screens on the seats for climate adjustments. The X90 could never have imagined such a world.

Suzuki previews e-Survivor concept, the cutest ute yet https://briefnews.eu/suzuki-previews-e-survivor-concept-the-cutest-ute-yet/ https://briefnews.eu/suzuki-previews-e-survivor-concept-the-cutest-ute-yet/#respond Mon, 25 Sep 2017 18:21:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/suzuki-previews-e-survivor-concept-the-cutest-ute-yet/

If you’ve ever thought of Suzuki as a whimsical manufacturer of small or smallish vehicles, you’re going to like what the manufacturer plans to show at the upcoming 45thTokyo Motor Show.

The e-Survivor Concept reimagines the classic Suzuki jeep as an all-electric vehicle, and it’s filled with interesting styling cues both retro and futuristic. The e-Survivor is not only lightweight in construction, it also looks like it, with vestigial wheelarches and see-through doors. The electric motors are housed in the wheels, leaving the ladder-frame construction able to be as skinny as possible. The dashboard houses large screens showing infotainment controls, navigation settings and the vehicle itself, and there are rear-view cameras in place of mirrors.

According to the manufacturer, the e-Survivor is a compact SUV of “the next age,” which could even hint of an electric 4×4 being the way for Suzuki to survive in this century — or in its second century: the company is 100 years old in 2020, and its concepts show what Suzuki sees beyond that. Perhaps something from the e-Survivor will make production after 2020; independent wheel-mounted electric motors would certainly suit a small, light SUV.

Other exhibits are the “tall miniwagon” Spacia Concept, the XBEE crossover available in several different guises, the friendly-looking Carry Open-Air Market Concept and a “neo-retro styled” SV650X bike.

New Suzuki Swift Sport to be lighter and torquier https://briefnews.eu/new-suzuki-swift-sport-to-be-lighter-and-torquier/ https://briefnews.eu/new-suzuki-swift-sport-to-be-lighter-and-torquier/#respond Wed, 13 Sep 2017 03:57:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-suzuki-swift-sport-to-be-lighter-and-torquier/

The Suzuki Swift Sport has been one of the most interesting hot hatches of the last decade, well at least outside the United States. Its first iteration was released in 2005, leaving behind its crummy Geo Metro guise in favor of something more in line dynamically with the segment best. Though it may have been an underdog from day one, the Swift Sport proved itself to be both fun and reliable

The new car promises to up the ante with a stiffer structure and a footprint increased courtesy a 20 mm-longer wheelbase and a stance that’s 40 mm wider and 15 mm lower. Power comes from a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder Suzuki cheekily calls the Boosterjet, ditching the old 1.6-liter naturally aspirated inline-4. The downsized, intercooled 138-horsepower turbo engine gives the Swift Sport only four more horsepower than the old unit, but there is a lot more torque available and at lower revs. Another major improvement is a weight loss of nearly 180 pounds — definitely a big deal in a small car like this — as the new model tips the scales at less than 2,140 lbs.

Suzuki says the feel of the six-speed manual shifter has been improved, too.

“It’s lighter, sharper, quicker. It’s more aggressive and emotive, but we’ve also refined the elements that make it practical to use every day,” said Suzuki chief engineer Masao Kobori. “The clutch feel, the manual transmission shift throw, the seats and steering wheel — everything that puts the driver at the heart of the experience.”

Sounds neat, though with Suzuki gone from the U.S. market, it’ll remain forbidden fruit for American customers. On the other hand, you can apparently rent these in Germany. Nurburgring rental anyone?

–

Suzuki’s Swift Sport has been a decent hot hatchback in foreign markets since its introduction in 2005, and the newest model looks to keep that reputation lit. We Americans still can’t buy a Swift, mostly because we can’t buy any new Suzuki. The company exited these shores years ago. So gaze from afar at the brand’s most fun-minded model as it makes its debut at the 2017 Frankfurt auto show.

–

Compared to an everyday Swift, the roughly 2100-pound Sport injects some muscle via a 138-hp turbocharged 1.4-liter inline-four. A six-speed manual transmission manages the flow of engine power to the front wheels, and the strut front and twist-beam rear suspension is lowered and firmed up for better dynamics. The Sport’s tires are 1.6 inches wider than before and wrap around slick-looking 17-inch wheels; the additional width aids high-speed stability, according to Suzuki.

These go-fast goodies are stuffed into the cheeky new Swift’s tiny body. The grille and front intakes are notably larger and angrier-looking than the regular model’s, and two big exhaust outlets poke out from the rear bumper. For those who prioritize safety in the small hot hatchbacks they can’t buy in the United States, the Swift Sport offers a suite of active-safety tech, from automated emergency braking to lane-departure warning. It’s a neat little car that’d be a great competitor for Ford’s Fiesta ST here, but it unfortunately remains forbidden fruit—largely because Suzuki’s lineup as a whole failed to capture American customers.

Junkyard Gem: 1993 Suzuki Swift GT https://briefnews.eu/junkyard-gem-1993-suzuki-swift-gt/ https://briefnews.eu/junkyard-gem-1993-suzuki-swift-gt/#respond Fri, 25 Aug 2017 14:19:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/junkyard-gem-1993-suzuki-swift-gt/ General Motors sold rebaged versions of the Suzuki Cultus in the United States, first as the 1984-1988 Chevrolet Sprint, then as the 1989-1997 Geo Metro, and finally as the 1998-2001 Chevrolet Metro. Meanwhile, Suzuki sold the Cultus on these shores as the Swift. Three-cylinder Metros were miserably slow and admirably fuel-efficient, but it was possible to buy the same car with a yowling 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine making 100 horsepower: the Swift GT. Here’s a very rare example, found in a Colorado self-service wrecking yard.

These cars weighed only about 1,800 pounds, so they were nearly as quick as the more powerful but heavier Honda Del Sol Si and Nissan Sentra SE-R … and much cheaper.

At $ 10,149 (about $ 17,400 in inflation-adjusted 2017 dollars), the Swift GT looked like a steal next to the $ 12,455 Sentra SE-R and the $ 16,070 Del Sol Si. However, the Hyundai Scoupe Turbo, priced at a mere $ 10,999, looked like the best deal of all in 1993.

This one has lived a hard life, with body damage, faded interior, and rust in the usual spots.

175,303 miles, most of them probably spent above 5,000 rpm.

Perhaps some Metro owner will grab the running gear and seats, in order to create a Geo sleeper… but we doubt it. Another piece of obscure automotive history, bound for the crusher.

Suzuki USA wasn’t pushing Swift advertising very hard in 1993, so we’ll go to the car’s homeland for a TV ad for the regular Cultus hatchback.

The earlier version of the Cultus GTi (factory-hot-rod counterpart to the U.S.-market Chevrolet Sprint) got some ads full of fire and Pet Shop Boys in its homeland.
