So if the first trailer for Mr. Harrigan’s Phone reminds you of Apt Pupil, then it’s understandable. Both stories revolve around a teenage boy forming an odd bond with an elderly mentor. But while Mr. Harrigan is no Nazi, he’s not an innocent either. And as you can see in the trailer below, Harrigan may even be responsible for a murderous rampage from beyond the grave.

Veteran actor Donald Sutherland is starring in the film as Mr. Harrigan, but the bulk of the movie appears to take place from the point of view of Craig (Jaeden Martell). By all outward appearances, Craig is a normal boy who endures horrific torment and bullying at school. That’s one of the reasons why Craig turned to Harrigan for advice. And when Harrigan dies suddenly, Craig finds himself emotionally bereft without his guidance. That leads to some questionable choices.

If Mr. Harrigan really is rising from his grave to murder Craig’s tormentors, then it’s likely the kid’s fault. Who leaves a working phone with the body of a dead man? And it’s always a bad idea to pay for cell service in Hell. If the damned want to phone the living, then they should call collect!

Of course, there is also the possibility that Craig is simply losing his mind. But in King’s stories, it’s almost always supernatural in the end.

It appears there has been a recount! As foreshadowed by our August 13 Blind Item, the Kiefer Sutherland drama Designated Survivor — cancelled last May at ABC — has been resurrected by Netflix, with the streamer ordering a 10-episode Season 3.

Netflix confirmed the news late Wednesday, while also announcing that Neal Baer (Law & Order: SVU, Under the Dome) has taken over showrunner duties. This marks the series’ fourth showrunner change in two years. To recap: Amy B. Harris (Wicked City) originally served as showrunner on the series (which was created by David Guggenheim), only to be replaced in May 2016 upon its official pickup, with Jon Harmon Feldman (Blood & Oil). Feldman left in the middle of Season 1, and was succeeded by Jeff Melvoin (Army Wives). And then in May 2017, it was announced that The Good Wife grad Keith Eisner would take the reins for Season 2.

In last May’s Season 2 finale, Sutherland’s President Kirkman announced a bid for re-election, catching his staff quite, but pleasantly, off-guard. When Season 3 picks up, Kirkman “will face a political reality — campaigning,” per the official logline supplied by Netflix. “What does it take to make a leader? What price will he be willing to pay? Democracy, as we know it, will hang in the balance.” This new season will also “explore today’s world of campaigning, smear tactics, debates, campaign finance and ‘fake news.’” 

In a statement, Sutherland said, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play President Kirkman for Season 3 of Designated Survivor on Netflix… I believe this format will allow us to continue to delve deeply into storylines and issues concerning the American electorate that were not previously possible.”

Added EP Mark Gordon: “The continuation of the show via Netflix is a win-win for all involved. The story of President Kirkman and those around him has not been fully told and we look forward to working with our new partner in continuing the show for a global audience.”

Designated Survivor Season 3 is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2019.

If you thought All The Money In the World was the only J. Paul Getty-related drama on the horizon, guess again: FX has an entire TV series about the Getty family coming up. The Danny Boyle-directed series, called Trust, features Donald Sutherland in the role of cold-hearted billionaire J. Paul Getty, and the first Trust teaser gives us a look at his sure-to-be-memorable performance.

Ridley Scott’s All The Money In the World made headlines recently when Scott decided to remove scenes involving actor Kevin Spacey and reshoot them with Christopher Plummer. Spacey, and now Plummer, plays J. Paul Getty, an oil tycoon who refused to pay the ransom when his grandson John Paul Getty III was kidnapped. We have yet to see what Plummer’s take on the performance may be, but he apparently has some competition from Donald Sutherland. Sutherland is playing the same role in the FX series Trust, and the first Trust teaser shows us Sutherland’s droll, darkly amusing take on the character. Watch it below.

While Trust will be covering the same kidnapping events from All The Money In the World, it will also be focusing on additional trials and tribulations of the Getty family, although season 1 seems to be fairly preoccupied with the kidnapping storyline. The show will debut after All The Money In the World opens, so here’s hoping audiences will still be in the mood for even more stories about the Getty family. Here’s the official synopsis:

Trust will delve into the trials and triumphs of one of America’s wealthiest and most notorious families, the Gettys. Equal parts family history, dynastic saga and examination of the corrosive power of money, Trust is a story that attempts to unlock the mystery at the heart of every family, rich or poor.

Trust will be directed by filmmaker Danny Boyle, and it’ll be interesting to see how the Steve Jobs filmmaker makes the jump from film to TV series. The script is from Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire screenwriter Simon Beaufoy. In addition to Sutherland, Trust also stars Hilary Swank, Harris Dickinson, Brendan Fraser, Hannah New and Michael Esper. 

Sutherland is a legend – a great actor with a wealth of memorable roles under his belt. I’m super excited to see him sink his teeth into this role, chew scenery and probably walk away with a few award nominations when all is said and done. Also: Brendan Fraser will be in this! Is this going to be the beginning of the Frasersance? We can only hope.

Trust will debut on FX in 2018.

At least 26 were killed Nov. 5 after a gunman opened fire during a service at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, making it the deadliest shooting in the state’s history.

Multiple media outlets identified the gunman as 26-year-old Devin P. Kelley, who was found dead inside his vehicle after it veered off the road while being pursued by authorities.

Here’s what we know about the victims so far:

Annabelle Pomeroy was attending Sunday service at her father’s church when a man started firing into the small building. Pastor Frank Pomeroy was on his way back from Oklahoma when his daughter died, he told ABC News.

Annabelle “was one very beautiful, special child,” he told ABC News. The 14-year-old was his youngest daughter.

Her mother, Sherri, was also out of town and texted the Associated Press that she lost her daughter “and many friends” in the shooting. She updated her Facebook profile picture to a photograph of her daughter, where friends and family members then posed and shared their condolences and memories.

“She was a sweet girl and will be missed by all,” Helen Biesenbach commented.

“We will always remember that beautiful smile,” another person said.

“Heaven truly gained a real beautiful angel this morning along with many more,” Scott Pomeroy, a family member, posted on Facebook. “I lost a lot of friends and family this morning but that just means Jesus needed them more. I know all that have taken their last breath of dirty air and took their first breath of heavenly air with new bodies with no pain and suffering.”

FX is placing their Trust in Donald Sutherland.

The prolific actor will star in FX’s 10-episode limited series Trust as J. Paul Getty, patriarch of the Getty family oil dynasty. Sutherland’s character is described as a mysterious and contradictory man, but is most notably famous for negotiating the release of his ransomed grandson.

Set in 1973, Getty’s grandson, John Paul Getty III, is kidnapped and held for ransom by the Mafia while visiting Rome. The show follows the struggle of Paul Getty at the hands of his bewildered captors. Sutherland’s previous TV roles include Commander in Chief, Dirty Sexy Money, The Pillars of the Earth and Crossing Lines.

As the world watched Donald Trump give his first interview as president to ABC, it may have seemed like the perfect moment for the channel to promote its new Kiefer Sutherland series Designated Survivor.

Unfortunately for the network, the promo came off as a tone-deaf plug to many viewers, some of whom took to social media to complain. In the brief preview, a fictional president is potentially shot at his inauguration, followed by the words “the bullet that shocked the nation.” Given Trump’s controversy-laden assumption to the presidency, some found it to be an odd moment to float the idea of a designated survivor.

Others, however, defended the network, saying that they had likely set up the promo for Designated Survivor weeks before the interview had been confirmed.

Other media has also annoyed Trump supporters by commenting on how Designated Survivor has once again put Kiefer in a “well-timed” position with a starring role in a topical program. Sutherland is perhaps best known for 24, a show about terrorism prevention that premiered just two months after 9/11. Deadline published an article a few days after the election arguing that the actor’s character, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Tom Kirkman, shared similarities to Trump as “a political outsider with no military background who has never held an elected position.”

“With 24 and Designated Survivor, the parallels to real life were unintentional, yet the timing of both Sutherland-starring shows is pretty remarkable. Designated Survivor just premiered on ABC this fall, during the final leg of the Presidential campaign, and has been given a full-season pickup.”

Like most Hollywood stars, Kiefer is no fan of Donald Trump himself. He has compared him to George Wallace, a former Alabama governor and unsuccessful presidential candidate who ran as both as a Democrat and later as an independent. While Wallace later recanted his racist positions against African Americans, he was a vocal proponent of segregation during his campaign, using campaign signs that threatened that “blacks vowed to take over America.” Sutherland, who was born in London to Canadian parents but lives in the U.S., told The Daily Beast that he feared that the same rhetoric was being used in the 2016 elections.

“Wallace managed to garner [nine million] Republican votes spewing kind of similar rhetoric to that of Donald Trump… In my lifetime I have watched things, in the last ten, fifteen years, move backwards which is unfortunate. The ease with which racist comments fly on the Internet, and how they’re accepted—it’s a crime in this country, the fact that it’s not enforced by any of the major carriers, Google, that those people aren’t summarily dismissed from being able to use the Internet.”

It’s not the first time that TV has stirred up controversy for mentioning the designated survivor scenario this year. CNN detailed what would take place if Trump was assassinated during his inauguration, which irked some viewers so much that they marked the video as inappropriate for inciting terrorism. AOL reported that one commenter called the report “distasteful and even treasonable.”
