Heathrow Airport was brought to a standstill when a suspicious package was found, sparking a security alert. Police and explosive search dogs investigated the incident which has now come to an end. Heathrow Airport is now open and working “as per normal,” a Heathrow spokeswoman told Express.co.uk. “Earlier today, we worked with the Met police to respond to an incident in Terminal 2 which temporarily affected security processing lanes,” she said.

“Our security lanes are now open and passengers are being processed through as normal.

“The safety of our passengers and colleagues is our absolute priority and we apologise to those passengers whose journeys were impacted as we responded to this incident.”

The Met Police tweeted earlier: “Police in Heathrow are assessing an item of luggage at Terminal 2. No reported injuries. Enquiries ongoing. Thanks for your cooperation.”

They then posted the update: “Assessment of luggage item by specialist officers now complete. Nothing untoward. Terminal 2 zone that was being looked at by police will be reopened shortly. Thank you for your patience.”

Images and footage on social media show crowds waiting outside the terminal while the investigation was being carried out.

Passengers at Heathrow said people were “getting restless” as they were forced to wait.

One Twitter user said there were “sniffer dogs everywhere!” while another added: “No one being allowed to enter.”

The incident comes after Gatwick Airport was forced to close after drones were spotted before Christmas last year.

Both Gatwick and Heathrow have allegedly now ordered military-grade anti-drone defences following three days of chaos at Gatwick over Christmas.

The new equipment, which is worth “several million pounds” will allow airports to track unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), The Times reported.

Last month, the British Army was drafted in at Gatwick and reportedly deployed an Israeli-produced ‘Drone Dome’ to protect the airport in the run-up to Christmas.

The army bought six Drone Domes for £15.8 million in 2018, using the same technology employed in Syria to destroy ISIS UAVs.

Using the specialist equipment, the army was able to ensure the airport was safe for planes to take off and land.

The anti-drone system can detect and jam communications between a drone and its operator.

More than 140,000 people were hit after around 1,000 flights were cancelled or diverted over three days of chaos from December 19 to 21 at the airport.

At one point, Sussex Police appeared to indicated there had been no drone sightings. But the force later backtracked and said it was investigating 115 “relevant sightings.”

‘Ambitious as Lucifer’: Steve Bannon takes dig at Nikki Haley and her ‘suspicious’ resignation https://briefnews.eu/ambitious-as-lucifer-steve-bannon-takes-dig-at-nikki-haley-and-her-suspicious-resignation/ https://briefnews.eu/ambitious-as-lucifer-steve-bannon-takes-dig-at-nikki-haley-and-her-suspicious-resignation/#respond Thu, 11 Oct 2018 13:28:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ambitious-as-lucifer-steve-bannon-takes-dig-at-nikki-haley-and-her-suspicious-resignation/

Ex-Trump adviser Steve Bannon has offered up a stinging back-handed compliment to Nikki Haley, describing the former UN envoy as “ambitious as Lucifer.” He said her resignation announcement before the midterms is “suspect.”

Bannon said in an interview with Bloomberg News that the timing of Haley’s decision was “horrific” and “suspect,” noting that it undermines the administration’s efforts to rally support ahead of November’s midterm elections.

“Everything she said about stepping down could have been done on the evening of November 6. The timing could not have been worse,” he added.

Although Bannon credited Haley as “very talented,” he also said that she was “incredibly politically ambitious – ambitious as Lucifer.”

However, some on social media questioned whether Bannon meant his comment as a compliment or an insult.

“Can you clear something up for me? If Steve Bannon says she is ‘ambitious as Lucifer,’ is that a dig or is he showing admiration?” one Twitter user pondered.

Another joked: “Steve Bannon knows Lucifer personally,” in an apparent dig at the former White House strategist’s controversial ties to the “alt-right.”

Haley announced her resignation as US ambassador to the UN on Tuesday, igniting speculation that she may be preparing for a presidential run. Another popular theory is that she was forced to resign after being unmasked as the anonymous author of an op-ed published by the New York Times last month, which made a number of incendiary but unsubstantiated claims, including that there was a shadow government of “adults” preventing Trump from leading the US astray.

Haley, however, says that she is not running for office and will campaign for Trump. The president on Wednesday defended the timing of Haley’s announcement, arguing that there’s “no good time” to resign and that if she had waited until after the midterms it would have sparked similar suspicions Haley’s political ambitions.

Her resignation announcement caught much of the Trump administration off guard, according to reports, including White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and Vice President Mike Pence.

  • A suspicious envelope addressed to President Donald Trump was reportedly intercepted by the US Secret Service on Monday.
  • The envelope did not make it inside the White House, according to a statement from the agency.
  • The interception comes amid reports of at least two packages addressed to senior military officials at the Pentagon, which tested positive for ricin, a deadly poison.

The US Secret Service says it is investigating a suspicious envelope addressed to President Donald Trump.

It was not immediately clear what was inside the envelope. The Secret Service said the correspondence never made it inside the White House.

The US Secret Service has confirmed that a “suspicious” envelope was sent to the White House and addressed to President Donald Trump, following reports of two letters testing positive for ricin being intercepted at the Pentagon.

“The envelope was not received at the White House, nor did it ever enter the White House,” the Secret Service said on Tuesday afternoon. They offered no further details, adding only they were “working jointly with our law enforcement partners to fully investigate this matter.”

Citing a law enforcement source, CNN reported that the letter contained suspicious substance believed to be ricin, the same toxin detected on Monday in two pieces of mail sent to the Pentagon and addressed to Defense Secretary James Mattis and Chief of Naval Operations Admiral John Richardson. However, that report remains unconfirmed.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Pentagon confirmed that the mail was intercepted on Monday when it tested positive for ricin. The mail facility was quarantined and the FBI invited to investigate.

Rome Airport police explode ‘suspicious’ bag which turns out to be filled with COCONUTS https://briefnews.eu/rome-airport-police-explode-suspicious-bag-which-turns-out-to-be-filled-with-coconuts/ https://briefnews.eu/rome-airport-police-explode-suspicious-bag-which-turns-out-to-be-filled-with-coconuts/#respond Tue, 02 Oct 2018 19:55:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rome-airport-police-explode-suspicious-bag-which-turns-out-to-be-filled-with-coconuts/

Rome’s Fiumicino Airport in Italy saw high drama yesterday afternoon after police blew up a suspicious bag.

However, fear quickly turned to farce when it became clear that rather than containing a bomb, the luggage held lots of coconuts.

An eyewitness photographed the incident which saw the Italian police simply abandon the exploded bag and the mess they had caused in the busy concourse.

Ned Donovan, a freelance journalist, shared his experience of the event on Twitter.

”Amazing, the Italian police have blown up a bag full of coconuts and have now reopened Rome airport,” he tweeted.

Ned posted a photo of the aftermath. The bag’s contents are strewn all over the floor and include numerous coconuts.

Another image showed police standing over the ruined bag holding the “suspect coconuts,” taken just moments after it was blown up, according to Ned.

Ned told The Independent the episode lasted at least 15 minutes and resulted in the terminal being closed.

However, while police prevented anyone from going airside or entering the terminal, they also left the people already inside to “wander around,” said Ned.

He later tweeted: “There’s so much about this incident that I enjoyed and also felt so Italian.

“They blew up what they thought was a bomb in the middle of the airport while people were about 10 metres away, and then when it was destroyed the police just wandered off and left it to be cleaned up.”

Twitter users loved the entertaining thread of posts about the coconuts and took to the platform in droves to share puns.

“Is that a weapon of mass desiccation?” one man tweeted. Another posted: “I hope they catch the perpetrator. They should put a bounty on them.”

“Top notch policework. They blew the case wide open,” a third Twitter user wrote.

Another person speculated that the contents of coconuts pointed to the passenger responsible being Indian.

“Oh gawd. This bag/luggage must belong to an Indian. Only we carry coconuts and frying pans when we travel,” one woman tweeted.

Others saw the opportunity for the episode to be replicated on TV.”There’s a Monty Python skit in this story somewhere,” one Twitter user wrote.

Rome is not the only airport facing embarrassment, however. A viral video has captured the awkward moment a ceremonial water salute went terribly wrong at Dubai Airport.

During the salute, one jet of water lost control and completely drenched the plane as it sprayed water directly at the body of the aircraft rather than aiming in an elegant arc over it.

To make matters worse the way the water hit the plane triggered the deployment of the emergency slide.

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin dodged questions on a string of deaths that are suspected of being orchestrated by the Kremlin, during an interview on Fox News.
  • Putin, who is in his third six-year term, likened the murders of political dissidents to the assassinations of US presidents and civil rights leaders.
  • He also alluded to the Soviet Union’s dissolution in 1991 and admitted there would be “some side effects” while Russia was “maturing.”
  • Russia’s denials, whether it be in regards to its involvement in Syria’s civil war or its meddling in the 2016 US presidential election, have become relatively predictable to the intelligence community and has stoked bipartisan outrage on Capitol Hill.

Russian President Vladimir Putin fended off questions on a string of deaths that are suspected to have been orchestrated by the Kremlin, during an interview on Fox News on Monday.

Police are investigating a “suspicious brown substance” found in an envelope sent to the office of a congresswoman in New Hampshire. Separately, the FBI is examining suspicious packages delivered to US military facilities.

The package arrived at the office of Democratic Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter in Dover on Monday afternoon. Staff alerted the police as soon as they opened it.

“This afternoon, my New Hampshire office received an envelope with an unidentified brown substance inside,” Shea-Porter said in a statement. “My office followed House procedure and notified the appropriate law enforcement agencies, and we are waiting for the results of some testing. I am so grateful for the quick response of the Dover Police Department.”

Dover police said no one was sickened or injured by the package. “It was immediately apparent to them that they had concerns and they instituted their protocols and called us right away. This was handled very quickly,” Dover police Lt. Brant Dolleman said, the Union Leader reports. RT.com has contacted the Dover police for further information.

News of the New Hampshire investigation comes as as the FBI analyzes a number of suspicious packages sent to military installations in Washington DC. “The FBI responded to multiple government facilities today for the reports of suspicious packages. Each package was collected for further analysis by the FBI,” FBI spokesman Andrew Ames said.

In one incident, a package sent to the Fort Nair National Defense University caused an evacuation. The Army Ordnance Disposal Unit confirmed the package contained explosive residue and that there was a fuse attached.
