Shawna Katz lost her partner during the pandemic and has been leaning on her “grief sister” for support. As COVID-19 restrictions lift and allow people to reconnect in-person, one psychologist says those who endured tragedy alone during COVID-19 may now be dealing with “suspended grief.”

Who’d have expected that a mock presidential debate between seven drag queens would somehow be less outlandish and more civil than the actual debates we’ve watched on TV in recent years?

The remaining contestants got political on Friday’s Drag Race, transforming into presidential candidates and sashaying down the campaign trail. RuPaul and guest mentor Raven did their best to prepare the ladies for their bi-partisan brawl, from basically handing Heidi N. Closet the perfect slogan (again) to questioning why Widow Von’Du insists on sporting those “biscuit baskets” instead of rocking higher heels.

I also appreciated Ru asking Crystal Methyd, “What is the crystal method?” and was a little surprised when she didn’t have an answer. (Frankly, I’m surprised there hasn’t been more discussion surrounding the queen’s polarizing name, especially considering how much time has been devoted to picking Heidi’s apart.) And was I the last person to find out that Jackie Cox is actually Canadian? Twist after twist!

(Side note: You may have noticed that I basically side-stepped this week’s mini challenge, a gloriously nightmarish parade of life-sized kitty girls. I touched on it earlier this week, but was too scared to revisit it tonight. Cats is still too fresh a wound.)

RuPaul's Drag RaceModerating the big debate were American treasures Rachel Bloom and Jeff Goldblum, the latter of whom received a very warm welcome from Miss Jaida Essence Hall. “Jeff Goldblum is the dinosaur doctor,” she reminded the cameras. “I don’t know if that’s his real life, but I love a man who knows about dinosaurs.” Don’t we all?

Here’s a quick breakdown of how the queens fared: Sherry Pie, who vowed to “take America off its diet,” once again looked like she just stepped out of a John Waters movie, playing a character the judges deemed too familiar; Crystal mulletted her way through the competition, proving that she always means “business in the front, party in the back”; Heidi kept her demeanor sweet and southern, armed with gasps (and gaps) aplenty; Gigi Goode relied on her old robot schtick, which didn’t work nearly as well as it did in the Snatch Game; Jaida was surprisingly hysterical (“The fact is, [Crystal] doesn’t even know who El DeBarge is!”); Widow took the challenge a little too seriously; and Jackie, for reasons unknown, built her entire platform around a “tiresome” joke about her being Canadian.

Speaking of Jackie, I love that the feuding politicians were able to find common ground on one issue: her facial hair. “How can you trust a drag queen when her five o’clock shadow is visible 24 hours out of the day?” Heidi posited, to which Widow added, “If she cannot win the war against her beard, how can she win the wars that we might have to fight for America?” Both very compelling arguments if you ask me.

Drag Race‘s salute to America continued with a stars-and-stripes runway, and (most of) the ladies served our country well. Naturally, the judges gobbled up Gigi’s “Quaker Oats fantasy,” while also praising Jackie’s powerful political statement and Widow’s inspired homage to Black America. But it was Jaida’s explosive red-white-and-blue ensemble that really (fire)worked for the judges, earning her a well-deserved win.

Unsurprisingly, Twitter exploded when Goldblum questioned Jackie’s decision to celebrate her Muslim heritage on the main stage, questioning the culture’s treatment of women and gays. (The islamophobia debates continue on social media, whereas the moment was basically forgotten on screen after Goldblum turned his attention to Gigi’s immaculate tuck.)

Gigi’s abysmal debate performance landed her in the bottom three, but her A+ runway look proved to be her saving grace. (“You will not see me in the bottom again,” she promised Ru.) This left Widow and Jackie to battle it out to Katy Perry’s “Firework,” a perfectly on-the-nose selection to cap off 90 minutes of pure patriotism. Both queens gave it their all, but Jackie’s decision to give comedy over drama — not to mention her more-flexible ensemble — led to her sticking around for another week.

Turkmenistan Airlines: All flights to and from the UK SUSPENDED – is your route affected? https://briefnews.eu/turkmenistan-airlines-all-flights-to-and-from-the-uk-suspended-is-your-route-affected/ https://briefnews.eu/turkmenistan-airlines-all-flights-to-and-from-the-uk-suspended-is-your-route-affected/#respond Mon, 04 Feb 2019 14:44:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/turkmenistan-airlines-all-flights-to-and-from-the-uk-suspended-is-your-route-affected/

Turkmenistan Airlines routes to the UK have been suspended to the UK in a decision enacted with immediate effect. The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has taken away the firm’s right to operate across the European Union, including from terminals in Birmingham and London’s Heathrow. The UK’s Civil Aviation Authority told how its chartered routes from the UK hubs to destinations including Amritsar, Bangkok, Beijing and Delhi, via Asghabat, would now not run. Where does that leave tourists and what advice has been given?

What is the situation with Turkmenistan Airlines?

Turkmenistan Airlines is the flag carrier and only airline of Turkmenistan, headquartered in Ashgabat.

The company’s flights to the European Union were suspended on February 4, by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), in the grounds of international air safety.

Shortly after its decision, the Civil Aviation Authority issued a statement advising passengers of the huge range and said: “Following the decision on 4 February 2018, by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to suspend permission for Turkmenistan Airlines to operate services to the European Union, Turkmenistan Airline flights from Birmingham and Heathrow to Amritsar, and Heathrow to New Delhi – which fly via Ashgabat – are suspended with immediate effect.

“The UK Civil Aviation Authority is required under European law to withdraw Turkmenistan Airlines’ permit to operate to the UK pending EASA’s restoration of their approval that it meets international air safety standards.”

It remains possible the firm can re-gain its license to fly at some point in the future.

What action can UK travellers affected by the decision take?

The CAA has offered advice to UK travellers, and stated on its website: “Passengers who have travelled may need to make their own arrangements to return home.

“They should contact Turkmenistan Airlines, your travel insurer or travel agent for assistance.”

For ticket refunds for journeys not yet taken, passengers should again get in touch with the airline.

Those who booked with a credit, charge or debit card may be able to make a claim against their card provider.

The airline has not yet commented on the ban.

What are the alternative routes people can use to get home to the UK?

Turkmenistan Airlines operates from bases at Birmingham and Heathrow Airports in the UK.

Other airlines which could help stranded passengers return to the UK include Air India, British Airways, Jet Airways and Virgin Atlantic.

Meanwhile for those in Turkey, Turkish Airlines could assist with direct flights.

Canada's Jared McIsaac suspended 1 game for high hit at world juniors https://briefnews.eu/canadas-jared-mcisaac-suspended-1-game-for-high-hit-at-world-juniors/ https://briefnews.eu/canadas-jared-mcisaac-suspended-1-game-for-high-hit-at-world-juniors/#respond Mon, 31 Dec 2018 10:38:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canadas-jared-mcisaac-suspended-1-game-for-high-hit-at-world-juniors/

Defencemen Jared McIsaac will be sitting out Canada's final preliminary-round game at the world juniors.

The IIHF disciplinary panel handed McIsaac a one-game suspension Sunday for his high hit on Czech forward Jachym Kondelik in Canada's 5-1 win a day earlier.

The 18-year-old McIsaac, who plays for the QMJHL's Halifax Mooseheads, was disciplined for "checking to the head or neck area," violating IIHF official rule 124.

The incident occurred at 8:08 of the third period Saturday near the Canadian blue line when Kondelik chipped the puck into the zone and McIsaac finished his check by extending his "body in an upward motion at Kondelik, resulting in contact being made with his left shoulder at Kondelik's head and neck area."

McIsaac will miss Canada's game Monday against Russia.

Leafs' Hyman suspended 2 games for hit on Bruins' McAvoy https://briefnews.eu/leafs-hyman-suspended-2-games-for-hit-on-bruins-mcavoy/ https://briefnews.eu/leafs-hyman-suspended-2-games-for-hit-on-bruins-mcavoy/#respond Mon, 10 Dec 2018 01:22:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/leafs-hyman-suspended-2-games-for-hit-on-bruins-mcavoy/

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Zach Hyman was suspended two games by the NHL on Sunday for interference following his hit on Boston Bruins defenceman Charlie McAvoy a night earlier.

Hyman had a hearing with the NHL department of player safety earlier Sunday and they announced the suspension later that night.

Hyman was given an interference major on the play in Toronto's 6-3 loss in Boston on Saturday night.

McAvoy had cleared the puck out from behind his own goal-line and was watching the play unfold when Hyman hit him, knocking the Bruins defenceman to the ice.

McAvoy had already missed 20 games this season with a concussion.

The suspension is Hyman's first in his 210-game career.

Hyman will forfeit $ 24,193.54. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Stephen Colbert Addresses Suspended CBS Executive: 'It Seemed Like Someone Was Protecting This Guy' https://briefnews.eu/stephen-colbert-addresses-suspended-cbs-executive-it-seemed-like-someone-was-protecting-this-guy/ https://briefnews.eu/stephen-colbert-addresses-suspended-cbs-executive-it-seemed-like-someone-was-protecting-this-guy/#respond Thu, 04 Oct 2018 14:26:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/stephen-colbert-addresses-suspended-cbs-executive-it-seemed-like-someone-was-protecting-this-guy/

Stephen Colbert on Wednesday addressed the news that Vincent “Vinnie” Favale, the senior vice president of talent at CBS, had been placed on administrative leave following multiple allegations of using sexual and homophobic language in the workplace.

The Late Show host tackled the damning report following his first commercial break (which you can watch here, beginning at the 10:20 mark), referring to the Favale situation as another example of “powerful men protecting other men in power.”

“An article came out on CNN today about an executive at CBS who used to be a liaison to this show,” Colbert said. “He basically came with the building when I got this show, and he used to be around here a lot. About six months into this show, some of our employees said they were uncomfortable with some of the things that he said, so we took their complaints to HR. They investigated, twice, but I don’t really know what, if anything, happened. It seemed like someone was protecting this guy. I don’t know who it was. We eventually convinced the network to make a change.

“I’m grateful to CNN for writing this article, because the press is not the enemy of the people,” Colbert continued. “This is why you want a free press. This is why you want investigative journalism. It’s to make sure that government and companies and people are accountable for their actions.”

The CNN report included accusations by nine current and former CBS employees, who either witnessed or later heard about Favale making inappropriate remarks. In one particular instance, Favale allegedly told a coworker that he “got four erections” while watching singer Jennifer Hudson rehearse for a 2015 appearance on The Late Show. He is also said to have made derogatory comments about Colbert’s sexuality.

Golden Knights' Nate Schmidt suspended 20 games for PEDs https://briefnews.eu/golden-knights-nate-schmidt-suspended-20-games-for-peds/ https://briefnews.eu/golden-knights-nate-schmidt-suspended-20-games-for-peds/#respond Sun, 02 Sep 2018 18:50:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/golden-knights-nate-schmidt-suspended-20-games-for-peds/

Vegas Golden Knights defenceman Nate Schmidt will miss the first 20 games of the season after he was suspended for violating the NHL's performance-enhancing substances policy.

It's the league's first suspension under the policy since Jarred Tinordi in 2016 and just the fifth since the most recent collective bargaining agreement went into effect in 2013. Schmidt, his agent and the Golden Knights criticized the punishment and questioned its merits.

"It is difficult to accept this suspension," Schmidt said Sunday in a lengthy statement. "I understand that I will miss these games, but I do not agree with the suspension and I will not accept being labelled a cheater."

Schmidt can take part in training camp, but is ineligible for preseason games. The earliest he can return is Nov. 18 at Edmonton.

"It was utterly shocking to be informed that I tested positive for a microscopic amount of a tainted substance," Schmidt said. "Not only did I not intentionally take a banned substance, I could not have received any performance enhancement benefit from the trace amount that inadvertently got into my system at a level that was far too small to have any effect."

Like a pinch of salt

The 27-year-old Schmidt said an expert in environmental contamination who testified on his behalf at the appeal hearing likened the amount of the banned substance to a pinch of salt in an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Schmidt said he only takes supplements given to him by his NHL team and has never tested positive before.

The Golden Knights said they disagree with the suspension and "firmly believe that the presence of a trace of the banned substance was accidental and unintentional."

Agent Matt Keator said Schmidt "is innocent and this is a wrong decision."

"He would never risk his principles by taking performance-enhancing drugs," Keator said in a text message to The Associated Press. "There was no intentional use of a banned substance which is backed up scientifically."

Top defenceman

The 6-foot-1, 194-pound Schmidt led the Golden Knights in ice time last season at 22:14 a game. He had 36 points during the regular season and seven during Vegas' run to the Stanley Cup Final.

"I'm extremely proud to be a player in the NHL. I have never cut corners in order to achieve this goal," Schmidt said. "I can't put into words how disappointed I am that I will not be on the ice at the beginning of the season to help my teammates work towards another Stanley Cup run."

Schmidt is entering his fifth NHL season after the Washington Capitals signed him as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Minnesota. He has 79 points in 276 career regular-season games with the Capitals and Golden Knights.

NCIS: New Orleans EP Brad Kern Formally Suspended Amid Third Misconduct Investigation https://briefnews.eu/ncis-new-orleans-ep-brad-kern-formally-suspended-amid-third-misconduct-investigation/ https://briefnews.eu/ncis-new-orleans-ep-brad-kern-formally-suspended-amid-third-misconduct-investigation/#respond Sun, 05 Aug 2018 16:25:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ncis-new-orleans-ep-brad-kern-formally-suspended-amid-third-misconduct-investigation/

CBS is confirming that embattled NCIS: New Orleans exec producer Brad Kern has been formally suspended from the show as the network conducts a third investigation into allegations that the onetime Charmed EP for decades created toxic, sexist and altogether hostile work environments. Kern, however, has not been formally fired.

“I believe in terms of keeping him out of the workplace during the investigation, that was to be as fair and open as we could be,” CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl told reporters Sunday at the Television Critics Assoc. summer press tour. “The investigation is ongoing. I’m told we will have results soon.”
