Ahead of the release of Avengers 4, it’s been revealed how one of the early shocking moments from this year’s blockbuster was kept so secret.
It seems that Loki’s shock demise stayed under wraps because not even the crew knew Tom Hiddleston’s character was being killed off until the moment it was filmed.
The reason? They had been given a decoy script in which he escaped Thanos.
In The Art of Avengers: Infinity War, executive producer Trinh Tran drops the bombshell.
“We created a version of the script where Loki would get away in an escape pod at the beginning of the movie,” she said.
“When we started shooting that particular sequence, we had crew members who were thoroughly confused.
“We had to let them know that those were fake versions of the script that they read.”
Sadly for the anti-hero’s fans, he met his maker when Thanos killed him in the very first scene.
He wasn’t the only fatality of that sequence: countless Asgardians’ were slaughtered, including – in one particularly brutal moment – Idris Elba’s Heimdall.
Hiddleston is rumoured to be appearing in Avengers 4 but it’s not known in what capacity: it could be a flashback, or a time jump or some other kind of non-linear scene.
Whether or not he’ll actually make a full return from the dead remains to be seen – but given that he’s already faked his own demise multiple times, would it be a step too far to have him do it again?
Whatever the case, Benedict Cumberbatch implied in a recent interview that characters like his – Doctor Strange – are definitely deceased.
Asked if he’ll be back, he told Jimmy Fallon: “I’m dust, baby.
“I’m just out there. I’m in the ether. I’m probably part of your food chain. I’m in your stomach somewhere.”
Marvel have launched a webpage for the film, which gives a countdown clock to its release – but there’s still no sign of a title or trailer.
Avengers 4 is out on April 26, 2019 in the UK.
UN Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Mark Lowcock called for a humanitarian ceasefire in areas essential to aid supply and infrastructure. Because of the deteriorating situation on the ground, he said, the UN has been forced to revise upward its estimates of 11 million Yemenis on the brink of starvation two weeks ago. Now, 14 million Yemenis face “pre-famine conditions,” relying on food aid for their very survival.
Most of this aid – 80 percent – arrives through the port of Hodeidah. The Houthi-controlled city has been under siege by coalition forces led by Saudi Arabia since June. The Saudis have accused regional rival Iran of arming the Houthis through the port, though Iran denies the allegations.
UK-based NGO Save the Children claims nearly two-thirds (64.5 percent) of Yemenis “don’t know when or if their next meal will come,” warning that those who don’t die of hunger are still at risk of succumbing to disease. Yemen is in the midst of the world’s largest ever cholera outbreak, a situation exacerbated by what many believe to be deliberate targeting of hospitals by coalition forces.
Coalition forces, armed and trained by the US, have come under fire by the international community for raiding non-military targets like hospitals and wedding parties. In August, a Saudi airstrike blew up a school bus, killing 30 children. Still, repeated efforts by anti-war elements in Congress to pass legislation ending US support for the bloody conflict have failed.
The proxy war in Yemen has dragged on since 2015, killing or injuring over 60,000 people in the poorest country in the Middle East. Food prices have increased 68 percent and the currency’s value has depreciated 180 percent. More than 80 percent of the population now lives below the poverty line, and millions of Yemenis have been forced to leave their homes, including half a million in Hodeidah in recent days, according to UN reports.
Lowcock called for an increase of funding and support for aid operations, including an injection of foreign exchange into the economy, in addition to the cessation of hostilities surrounding the port and infrastructure areas.

An associate of a New York City crime family has narrowly escaped death after being chased and shot several times by a would-be assassin on the streets of the Bronx, video footage released by police has revealed.
Salvatore ‘Sally Daz’ Zottola, a partner in crime of the Bonanno family, which has ruled the streets of New York for over a century, was targeted by an unknown shooter at about 6.30am on Wednesday morning. The newly-released video of the incident shows a red Nissan pulling up next to Zottola’s car.
The gunman first tries to take out the 41-year-old through the passenger window, apparently missing his target. The victim then jumps out of his minivan, seeking cover as the hitman continues shooting at the mafia man. Zottola is then seen rolling away, apparently trying to dodge the bullets.
With the target still breathing, the assassin gets out of the vehicle to shoot Zottola at point-blank range as the 41-year-old keeps swirling away. After shooting his victim several times, the hitman runs back to the getaway car before speeding away.
Zottola was rushed to the hospital in serious condition with wounds to his chest and right hand but is expected to survive. The would-be assassin, meanwhile, remains on the loose.

In this edition of Star Wars Bits:
John Williams is just as integral to Star Wars as lightsabers, Jedis, and the Max Rebo band, so it’s with great joy that we discovered this week via StarWars.com that the original six film soundtracks will be getting remastered. Set to be released on May 4, these new remasters were overseen by Shawn Murphy and Skywalker Sound, and reconstructed from new high resolution transfers.

Disney has been doing a stellar job of expanding the world of Star Wars using canon novels, comics, and animation. In Marvel Comics’ Darth Vader #13 (via Screenrant), the creative team brought in a classic Star Wars Legends trope: a Jedi who survived Palaptine’s Order 66, the event overseen by the emperor to wipe out the Jedi order. We’re yet to see just who this new Jedi is, but we’re super excited to see where this new thread goes.

Part of Disney’s expansion of the new canon has been their animated properties. Launched last year, Forces of Destiny is a series of shorts focused on the women of the Star Wars universe. And as Inverse noticed, the newest season does a lot to change and expand on some important Star Wars moments, like Luke and Yoda on Dagobah and how Leia got the Bounty Hunter suit in Return of the Jedi. We adore these cute continuity treats!

Yoda’s scene in The Last Jedi was a momentous, as we saw Frank Oz return to the role as voice actor and puppeteer as the Jedi master gave Luke some incredibly important and moving advice. IGN got the scoop on just how that reunion came to be in a recent interview with Oz. “Several years ago I had lunch with Rian [Johnson], and Rian asked if I could do Yoda in the next Star Wars, and I said ‘Sure,’ because I thought it was just CGI. And then Kathy Kennedy, who I’ve known for quite a while, who’s fantastic, she called me about it and then I realized that it wasn’t CGI, that it was actually the character,” Oz recalled fondly.
Now that The Last Jedi is finally available to take home, we’ve been getting a great look at the behind the scenes featurettes and special features, including this moving short about Luke’s ultimate and controversial fate.

Many fans were dismayed when it was revealed that Peter Mayhew would be stepping down as Chewbacca after The Force Awakens, but new recruit Joonas Suotamo did an incredible job in The Last Jedi. The former Swedish basketball player spoke with StarWars.com and revealed some really gorgeous and previously unseen cast shots that are just an utter treat for fans of the galaxy far, far away…
Claudia Gray has done a fantastic job creating extensive and exciting Star Wars stories with her novels Lost Stars, Bloodline, and Leia, Princess of Alderaan. In a new episode of Star Wars Explained, an exciting new theory suggests that Ben Solo is the one who saves Leia from an assassination attempt in Gray’s political thriller Bloodline.

The scope and spectacle of Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi is incredible. io9 was on hand this week to give us a glimpse at some of the concept art behind those instantly iconic scenes, including a look at Luke facing down the First Order on Crait and Yoda in front of the burning tree on Ahch-To. These are a gorgeous sneak peek at the process of creating the vast visual landscape of The Last Jedi.

Star Wars News Net is always a great place to get Star Wars updates, but they’ve really outdone themselves with this bit of investigation. Via Reddit, the team found a description on the back of a Solo: A Star Wars Story toy that mentions a deep cut Legends reference. “The Cloud-Rider gang led by Enfys Nest terrorizes the skies atop the mean-looking swoop bikes. Little more than engines with seats, swoops are hard to control but capable of incredible speed.” The Cloud Riders originally appeared in the classic Marvel Star Wars comics, so maybe this is just a nod… but Disney has been pulling from Legends for other stories, so who knows…

Ever wanted to celebrate a special occasion by eating a planet? Or course you have! And thanks to the majestic Jenn Fujikawa at Nerdist, now you can. Part of the Nerdist Nosh series, this delicious red velvet Crait cake is a really cool centerpiece for any Star Wars party.

Kylo Ren’s naked torso has been one of the many talking points surrounding The Last Jedi. It’s almost been as controversial as flying Leia and Force Skype! But it was also met by much jubilation from fans of Adam Driver. As Nerdist reports, if you’re one of the many who love Kylo Ren’s wide body, you can now own a t-shirt which recreates the toned abs and gnarly scar from Episode VIII.

Which of us doesn’t want to live in the Star Wars galaxy? At least for a little while, right? Although that may not happen anytime soon, Gamespot sleuths have noticed that a recent advert on a recruitment site hints that Lucasfilm maybe planning a huge new online game. The enigmatic advert includes the tantalizing phrase: “Lead a team to deliver Online features for a Star Wars Open World project.”

A new technique that abuses poorly secured servers is fueling record-breaking denial-of-service attacks, along with notes demanding the targets pay hefty ransoms for the debilitating flood of junk traffic to stop.
As Ars reported last week, memcached, a database caching system for speeding up websites and networks, lets DDoS vandals amplify their attacks by an unprecedented factor of 51,000. That means a single home computer with a 100 megabit-per-second upload capacity from its ISP is capable of bombarding a target with a once-unimaginable 5 terabits per second of traffic, at least in theory.
Following the discovery that DDoS vandals in the wild were abusing open memcached servers, researchers last week predicted a new round of record attacks. Two days later, DDoS mitigation service Akamai/Prolexic reported the 1.3Tbps attack against Github, just slightly topping previous records set in 2016.
]]>Boisvert-Lacroix posted a time of 34.31 seconds in the early stages of the race at the Olympic Oval, but had to watch as 14 more skaters — and then two re-skates — tried to better that time.
None did, handing the Sherbrooke, Que., native his first gold medal at a World Cup event.
Alex Boisvert-Lacroix wins 1st World Cup race in Calgary1:36
“I was nervous till they crossed the line and I saw their times, and I was like, ‘Yes, I have it for real,”‘ Boisvert-Lacroix said of the two re-skates, awarded to Russia’s Ruslan Murashov and Germany’s Nico Ihlo due to lane interference.
“Everything is possible. If I can win here, why not at the Olympics?”
South Korea’s Cha Min Kyu won silver and Finland’s Mika Poutala took bronze. Boisvert-Lacroix’s gold-medal winning time was .01 of a second shy of his personal best.
“When I saw the time, my coach gave me a good high-five,” the 30-year-old said. “But we had no clue what would happen after that.”
Boisvert-Lacroix said the wait was “nerve-breaking.”
“After that, I was so happy; it was crazy. Then someone told me, ‘Oh, you have to wait. There’s a re-skate for two skaters.’ It’s never over till it’s over.”
Boisvert-Lacroix said he didn’t think his performance was podium-worthy.
“I thought it would be a fifth place, to be honest,” he said. “But it was good enough. It was just a good race. I’ll take that, for sure.”
Ottawa’s Vincent De Haitre finished sixth in the men’s 1,500m with a personal-best time of 1:43.13.
“I’m pretty happy—those don’t happen all the time,” said De Haitre. “Obviously, it’s not a podium finish. But, at the same time, these are all training races [for the Olympics] and I executed what I wanted to do during this race.
“We identified a few things that I could change for next time around. We’re going to do that in Salt Lake City[(next weekend] and see what happens with that.”
Russia’s Denis Yuskov won gold followed by Netherlands skaters Koen Verweij and Kjeld Nuis.

Denny Morrison of Fort St. John, B.C., placed eighth.
De Haitre, who finished fourth in the 1,000m on Saturday, said he was pleased with his weekend overall.
“I would rate [the weekend] eight out of 10, maybe nine,” he said. “It’s nice to get a medal but at the same time, that’s not the goal. The goal is to get better and I did that this weekend.”
In the women’s 500 metres, Japan’s Nao Kodaira picked up gold, while South Korea’s Sang-Hwa Lee earned silver. Japan’s Ariso Go took bronze.
Japan’s Miho Takagi was on top in the women’s 1,500 metres. Marrit Leenstra of the Netherlands took silver while Russia’s Yekaterina Shikhova got bronze.
Italy’s Andrea Giovannini captured the men’s mass start, while Germany’s Claudia Pechstein won the women’s race.

Frampton returned to the ring for the first time since his defeat to Leo Santa Cruz in January.
And he put on a thrilling performance which now sets him up for a potential title fight in 2018.
The judges called the clash 98-93, 97-93 and 96-93 in Frampton’s favour – and he was delighted to be back in action after a 10 months out.
“It was a good fight for the fans,” Frampton said.
“Everybody will probably have enjoyed that, more than me anyway.
“I got myself caught up in the fight. I was boxing lovely at the start.
“Middle round I started trying to fight him and I was doing good in patches but then he dragged me into a fight.
“In fairness I slipped and on the way down he landed a show so it was probably fair to call it a knockdown.”
Frampton rocked his opponent early on with a straight left which cranked up the atmosphere in SSE Arena.
The Irishman was picking his shots well and in the second round struck a heavy one-two combination which made Garcia retreat.
Frampton was on the front-foot again in the third, but Garcia took a big right hand well.
It took until the fourth round for the Mexican to hit his first big shot of the night – a powerful left-hook which pushed his opponent onto the ropes.
Frampton took plenty of bodyshots in the fifth but was countering well, besides a blow to the eye which opened up a wound.
The two fighters traded blow-for-blow in the sixth but the following round was cast in controversy as Frampton hit the deck and it was ruled as a knockdown, although it looked highly likely that he slipped.
Frampton was heavily involved in a dog-fight in the later rounds and spent the majority of the ninth on the ropes.
But was taking the hits well and responded with good combinations to grind out the win – but it was much, much tougher than he would have ever imagined.
A small passenger plane has crashed in the Russian Far East, killing up to six people on board, according to local police. One child has survived the crash.
The plane went down as it was about to land at the local airport in the village of Nelkan, over 1,000 km from the regional capital, Khabarovsk. Seven people were on board the plane, including two crew members and a four-year-old child, local authorities say.
The incident occurred at 1:30 p.m. local time (3:30 a.m. GMT), the local office of the Emergencies Ministry reports.
The plane was reportedly a Let L-410 twin-engine aircraft with a maximum seating capacity of 19 passengers. It was owned by Khabarovsk Airlines.
Aviation authorities lost contact with the plane at about 2 kilometers from the airport, the Emergencies Ministry reports.
Fire and rescue crews and ambulances were dispatched to the site of the crash. The aircraft was damaged by the impact, but did not catch fire, the ministry added.
The plane made hard landing in the forest after it missed the runway by 1.5 to 2km, a local air traffic control official told Interfax later on Wednesday.
Experts are now looking at three possible causes of the crash, including difficult weather conditions, pilot error or technical issues, the Far Eastern branch of Russia’s Investigative Committee said. The Ministry of Transport said the Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) will also join the analysis.
However, a representative of Russia’s weather forecast service in the Far East says the weather conditions in the village should not have posed any problems. “There was no snow, the wind was blowing at 3-4 m/s, no fog, the visibility was good,” he told RIA Novosti.
A medical helicopter will airlift the surviving child to a hospital in Khabarovsk or to Nikolayevsk-on-Amur, some 500km from the village, the Khabarovsk government press service said in a statement. The child’s condition is being determined.
