President of Lebanon Michel Aoun has called on Saudi Arabia to clarify why Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri remains in the kingdom and does not return to Beirut. The president described the situation surrounding the minister being in Saudi Arabia “dubious and mysterious,” and said that anything al-Hariri has said or may say “does not reflect reality.” Al-Hariri announced his resignation in a broadcast from Saudi Arabia. “Lebanon does not accept its prime minister being in a situation at odds with international treaties and the standard rules in relations between states,” a Saturday statement from Aoun’s office said, as quoted by Reuters.

  • Around 350 officers will be working to protect tens of thousands of runners.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas is posting snipers and surrounding tens of thousands of runners with other safety measures at a weekend marathon, the first large-scale outdoor event since a gunman killed 58 people at a country music festival.

Police have beefed up security and tweaked their original safety plan for the annual event that starts on the Las Vegas Strip. Some participants say they will be running Sunday to stand up to evil. About 350 officers will be working to protect the runners as they pass by world-famous high-rise casino-hotels and the crime scene.

“We’ve made a few changes, some subtle things,” Capt. Andrew Walsh said. “Obviously, the threat of a sniper attack is something that we know can happen. So, we added some counter-sniper surveillance posts along the route.”

A high-stakes gambler and real estate investor killed 58 people and injured hundreds more on Oct. 1 after shattering the windows of his hotel suite and unleashing gunfire on the Route 91 Harvest music festival below. From the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay casino-hotel, Stephen Paddock had an unobstructed view to rain bullets on the crowd, who had few places to hide.

The police helicopter unit will be circling throughout the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon, set to begin just before sunset Sunday. Police also will have bomb-sniffing dogs.

Semi-trucks, dump trucks, buses and other large city vehicles will be positioned at key intersections to try to prevent anyone from driving onto the course, Walsh said, following recent attacks in the U.S. and abroad in which vehicles have plowed into crowds.

He acknowledged that the event presents a huge challenge to police and encouraged casino employees, visitors and others to alert authorities of anything suspicious. Security checkpoints will be set up for the Sunday races — a marathon, half marathon and 10K — and a Saturday 5K and concert.

“With all the things that we’ve seen happen in the world, whether it’s in Texas at a church, whether it is in New York City on a bike path, or whether it’s here at a concert, the vulnerabilities that exist and try to predict and prevent each and every one of those is a tremendous challenge,” Walsh said.

Organizers moved events away from the scene of the massacre. The concert, typically held at the outdoor venue where the shooting took place, was shifted miles north, across from the SLS hotel.

The start of the marathon, usually outside Mandalay Bay, was moved a mile north to the front of the New York-New York casino-hotel. The race has always featured live bands every mile, but on Sunday, the first 2½ miles — when runners will go by the crime scene twice — will be silent.

Spokesman Dan Cruz said that will serve as an extended moment of silence.

“Running the marathon symbolizes miles of grit, determination; these are driven athletes, who know all about adversity,” he said. “So, for them, it’s the perfect event to help Las Vegas bounce back.”

Cruz said less than 50 people canceled, transferred or deferred their participation, and people still registered after the shooting.

Judy Mace is among the 24,000 people who will run the half marathon. As she picked up her race package Thursday at a convention center, the Orlando, Florida, resident said she never considered canceling and is not concerned about her safety.

“After going through the Pulse shooting in Orlando, you just get angry,” said Mace, 68. “They’re not going to do this to us. We will not back down. People asked me in Orlando, ‘Why are you going? It’s probably dangerous.’ I said ‘No. I’m fine.'”

After months of selling, it appears that the gloom surrounding the US dollar is slowly starting to lift.

According to data released by the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), traders continued to buy the US dollar last week, extending the pattern seen in the previous two weeks.

“Leveraged funds were net buyers of USD for the third consecutive week,” said Khoon Goh, Head of Asia Research at ANZ Bank.

“Dollar demand was broad-based, with only the NZD not seeing net selling, though this was before the announcement that there would be a change in government.”

This chart from ANZ shows the change in net US dollar positioning from the CFTC data against the EUR, JPY, GBP, CHF, CAD, AUD and NZD since the start of 2014.

There are still some unanswered questions surrounding the ambush in Niger, in which 4 US soldiers died https://briefnews.eu/there-are-still-some-unanswered-questions-surrounding-the-ambush-in-niger-in-which-4-us-soldiers-died/ https://briefnews.eu/there-are-still-some-unanswered-questions-surrounding-the-ambush-in-niger-in-which-4-us-soldiers-died/#respond Fri, 20 Oct 2017 00:34:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/there-are-still-some-unanswered-questions-surrounding-the-ambush-in-niger-in-which-4-us-soldiers-died/ John McCainAP

  • Weeks after the initial reports of the ambush in which 4 US troops were killed in Niger, questions still remain about what exactly happened.
  • Lawmakers have been left in the dark and are pressing the White House for answers, with Sen. John McCain suggesting he may issue a subpoena.
  • The Department of Defense is still investigating what happened

Following the deaths of four US soldiers in Niger earlier in October, several questions remain unanswered, spurring lawmakers to press the White House and Pentagon for answers on the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Leading this charge is Sen. John McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, who says he may seek a subpoena to receive information on the attack, according to CNN.

On Wednesday, McCain said that the White House was not being upfront about the Niger ambush, and said he would like the information his committee “deserves and needs.”

“I haven’t heard anything about it, to tell you the truth, except that they were killed,” McCain said in a Daily Beast report on Tuesday.

Although the Special Forces unit involved in the ambush and US Africa Command (AFRICOM) — the combatant command in charge of operations in Niger — are conducting investigations, McCain indicated he may want details before the results.

“That’s not how the system works,” McCain said to CNN. “We’re coequal branches of government. We should be informed at all times.”

Defense Secretary James Mattis was reportedly also dismayed by the dearth of information surrounding the ambush, but there was no sign that he was going to rush the investigation process multiple officials told CNN.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon claims it will keep the Armed Services Committees “up to date” on the ambush: “We will work with Sen. McCain and his staff to make sure they get everything that they need,” the Pentagon reportedly said on Thursday.

One of the primary questions that circulated in news reports has been why President Donald Trump had not addressed the casualties or the circumstances behind the ambush.

Following initial media reports of the ambush, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders released a statement saying that Trump had been informed of the incident. However, it wasn’t until 12 days later after the reports that Trump made his first public acknowledgment of the ambush.

A statement of condolence was reportedly drafted by a staffer from the National Security Council for Trump to immediately deliver following the ambush. But Trump never made the statement that was circulated around the Defense Department and the National Security Council. Instead, he delivered a speech that has been widely criticized for making false claims about his predecessors’ actions after a service member’s death and was condemned by a Gold Star father.

McCain also questioned why US troops were operating in that specific area of the Niger-Mali border without sufficient resources. French officials were frustrated with the US troops — who were there to establish relations with local leaders — because they acted on limited intelligence and didn’t have an emergency plan, a diplomat familiar with the incident told Reuters. France, a key US ally in the region, has a military presence that includes attack helicopters and Mirage jets, according to CNN.

While Special Forces troops have operated under AFRICOM’s purview for years, intelligence and contingency plans still remain the backbone of any mission US forces undertake. The investigation into the ambush — which spans the Special Forces group, AFRICOM, and the Pentagon as well as French and Nigerien forces — will likely take longer, given the broad scope of the mission.

Equifax responds to confusion surrounding a massive security breach affecting 143 million customers https://briefnews.eu/equifax-responds-to-confusion-surrounding-a-massive-security-breach-affecting-143-million-customers/ https://briefnews.eu/equifax-responds-to-confusion-surrounding-a-massive-security-breach-affecting-143-million-customers/#respond Fri, 08 Sep 2017 23:48:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/equifax-responds-to-confusion-surrounding-a-massive-security-breach-affecting-143-million-customers/ bored annoyed disdainStefan Wermuth/Reuters

Equifax on Friday responded to concerns surrounding the massive security breach it announced a day earlier.

The credit-monitoring agency said problems with a website established for customers to see if they were among the 143 million affected by the hack had been fixed.

The company said it made three key adjustments to handle the aftermath of the breach:

  • Consumers can immediately determine whether they were affected by the breach.
  • The company’s arbitration clause and class-action waiver would not apply to this incident
  • And an expanded call center with over 2,000 agents was also being established

On Thursday, the company said criminals had accessed details including names and Social Security numbers. Credit card numbers for about 209,000 people, and certain documents for another 182,000 were also accessed.

Read the full statement from Equifax below:

A PROGRESS REPORT FOR CONSUMERS

We understand that some consumers are experiencing difficulties getting the answers and support they need through our website and call center. Ramping up the website and call center to handle the anticipated volume is ongoing and we are focused on making improvements as quickly as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience this process has created.

Thus far today, we’ve made the following adjustments:

1). YOU CAN DETERMINE YOUR STATUS IMMEDIATELY

Some consumers who visited the website soon after its launch failed to receive confirmation clarifying whether or not they were potentially impacted. That issue is now resolved, and we encourage those consumers to revisit the site to receive a response that clarifies their status.

2). NO WAIVER OF RIGHTS FOR THIS CYBER SECURITY INCIDENT

In response to consumer inquiries, we have made it clear that the arbitration clause and class action waiver included in the Equifax and TrustedID Premier terms of use does not apply to this cybersecurity incident.

3). EXPANDED OUR CALL CENTER

We have tripled our call center team to over 2000 agents and continue to add agents.

Our goal is to make this process as convenient and consistent as possible. We will continue to identify steps to improve this process.

And we will continue as well to listen to your comments and suggestions.

The Surrounding Darkness Hides Dangers In Roguelike Shooter Black Mist https://briefnews.eu/the-surrounding-darkness-hides-dangers-in-roguelike-shooter-black-mist/ https://briefnews.eu/the-surrounding-darkness-hides-dangers-in-roguelike-shooter-black-mist/#respond Wed, 23 Aug 2017 02:02:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-surrounding-darkness-hides-dangers-in-roguelike-shooter-black-mist/ ss_3600b19f93c0300555315062c4984d8df09e7d42.1920x1080.jpg

Black Mist puts players inside a claustrophobic darkness, with shadows creeping in close. They can light their way and unveil the dangers lurking in the shadows using a shot from their gun, but each bullet draws from the same power as their life force, costing health with each blast. This makes every decision to shoot a tense affair, but with deadly things waiting in the darkness, players may have no choice.

Black Mist sets up random room compositions when players set out, meaning no amount of experience will prepare them for whatever corridors and dangers await them. Players can try to find out what’s all around them by moving through the dark, which will light up whatever area is close around them, or listen to the sounds nearby enemies make. Lighting the way with a shot is most effective, though, but when those blasts cost a little life each time, it won’t be long before players are fumbling blind.

Players do have a few tools they can use to fight back. Black Mist features forty-nine pieces of equipment to help them stay alive and deal more damage, but players must use batteries to fuel them. This limits players from equipping everything, and a small energy cost to switch equipment means players will again have to consider if their actions are worth the damage they’ll take.

Mixing roguelike action and systems that draw from health in multiple ways, players will need to plan out ever single step they take throughout this dark world, all while dealing with the tensions of what’s breathing close by, creating a tense experience for those who pick it up.

Selling your house tips: THIS noise in your surrounding area could put off buyers https://briefnews.eu/selling-your-house-tips-this-noise-in-your-surrounding-area-could-put-off-buyers/ https://briefnews.eu/selling-your-house-tips-this-noise-in-your-surrounding-area-could-put-off-buyers/#respond Wed, 16 Aug 2017 15:19:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/selling-your-house-tips-this-noise-in-your-surrounding-area-could-put-off-buyers/

A survey of 1,000 people across England and Wales reveals 69 per cent of house hunters would be unwilling to move into their dream home if they were aware that loud music with a heavy bass was played regularly next door, while 63 per cent would not put up with neighbours who engaged in noisy activities like DIY and parties at least three times a week.

But a financial incentive means some people will put up with a noise home life – 24 per cent of respondents would be prepared to suffer through loud music and 29 per cent through noisy activities if they were able to negotiate a discount on the selling price.

The results also reveal younger buyers might be more accustomed to noise and therefore be more accepting of it. Only 35 per cent of 18 to 24 year olds wouldn’t move into a home if they could hear heavy bass music, while over-55s prove far more selective, with 86 per cent stating that under no circumstances would they move in to such a property.

Noises from natural and spiritual neighbours are far less of an issue for sellers looking to achieve the best sale price. The sound of church bells in the morning is the most appealing to prospective buyers, with 36 per cent happy to move straight in to a home affected by this with no discount, rising to 46 per cent for those located in rural parts of the UK.

This is followed by the sound of cockerels crowing every morning – 31 per cent of potential buyers would happily move in next door to an animal alarm clock, without a discount on price.

The same cannot be said for properties within close proximity of a nightclub or pub. More than 62 per cent of respondents would refuse to move in, rising to 72 per cent for rural homebuyers and 82 per cent for over-55s. This contrasts significantly with 18 to 24 year olds, as only 26 per cent of this age group wouldn’t move into a home near a lively pub or nightclub.

Noise from trains, aeroplanes and traffic is far more accepted by buyers of all ages than noise from their direct next-door neighbours, especially if they are able to get a discount.

The research was carried out by national estate agent Jackson-Stops & Staff.

Property Expert, Louisa Fletcher, said if you are considering buying a property where noise is an obvious factor it is perhaps wise to consider the impact that this will have when you come to sell the property yourself.

She explained: “For example, if you’re looking to negotiate a hefty discount when you’re buying the property because it backs onto a train line or is under a flight path, then it’s highly likely that when you come to sell yourself, prospective buyers will seek to do the same, so you need to go into the purchase with your eyes (and ears) open.

“Perhaps visit the property at different times of day to gauge how much you can hear. If it’s noisy during the day but you’re at work that may not be so much of a problem, but if it’s low flying planes late at night that may be a bit of deal breaker if you’re a light sleeper.

“Check online or ask how long the property has been on the market for – if it’s been a while, that may mean that the source of the noise or location such as if it’s in close proximity to a nightclub or sports stadium, is perhaps making it harder to sell the property, in which case you need to think carefully as it’s quite possible that this will still be the case when you decide to move at some point too.”

Louisa says another thing which is little-known is if you’ve had a dispute with your neighbours – and noise is a prime example of this.

She said: “You have to disclose this by law when you sell a property if you’ve taken any legal action or lodged any complaints about them with the local authority. If you don’t and at a later date post-completion the new owner discovers there has been an issue with the neighbour’s, as the seller you’re liable and can be sued by the new owners. If you’re a buyer and are at all concerned about ‘neighbour noise’ when you’re viewing a property, the best thing to do is ensure that your solicitor is explicit with their enquiries prior to exchange.

“Lastly, even ‘pleasant noise’ can have expensive consequences, so if it’s the tinkling of church bells you can hear, whilst that may sound angelic, this can also point to the owners of the property perhaps being liable for chancery repair, which means you might have to contribute towards things like repairs to the Church roof.  Always mention things like that to your solicitor before you start, so that they can investigate fully for you.”

Another tip to convince potential buyers to put in an offer is having this in your home.

Top Republican: Controversy surrounding Susan Rice unmasking was ‘created’ by Devin Nunes https://briefnews.eu/top-republican-controversy-surrounding-susan-rice-unmasking-was-created-by-devin-nunes/ https://briefnews.eu/top-republican-controversy-surrounding-susan-rice-unmasking-was-created-by-devin-nunes/#respond Fri, 21 Jul 2017 21:03:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/top-republican-controversy-surrounding-susan-rice-unmasking-was-created-by-devin-nunes/ Devin NunesAP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite

The chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee said Friday that the controversy surrounding whether former National Security Adviser Susan Rice politicized intelligence about President Donald Trump and his associates “was all created” by House Intelligence Committee chairman Devin Nunes.

Republican Sen. Richard Burr, along with the rest of the Senate Intelligence Committee, met with Rice behind closed doors on Friday as part of their investigation into Russia’s election interference. But he told CNN that he did not ask Rice about allegations that she inappropriately “unmasked” the names of Trump associates in intelligence reports last year.

“The unmasking thing was all created by Devin Nunes,” Burr said, “and I’ll wait to go through our full evaluation to see if there was anything improper that happened. But clearly there were individuals unmasked. Some of that became public which it’s not supposed to, and our business is to understand that, and explain it.”

Current and former US intelligence officials have acknowledged that leaking the identities of US persons named in intelligence reports is illegal. But requests by top administration officials — and policymakers like those that sit on the congressional intelligence committees — to identify which US persons foreign agents are speaking to or about would not have been unusual or against the law.

Still, Nunes reportedly issued subpoenas last month to the CIA, FBI, and NSA for more details about why Obama administration officials requested the unmasking of Trump associates last year. Democrats said Nunes went around them and did not tell them about the subpoenas until it was too late for them to object.

It is not the first time Nunes would have bypassed his fellow committee members: Nunes stepped aside from the Russia investigation in early April after going around the committee and briefing the president directly on classified intelligence that he said showed that Trump and his transition team had been “incidentally” surveilled after the election.

Republican and Democratic sources who reviewed the same intelligence, however, told CNN they saw no evidence of wrongdoing by the Obama administration.

A Democratic committee aide told Business Insider last month that Nunes and other Republicans on the committee were trying to make questions about unmasking “the focal issue” of the committee’s probe into Russia’s election interference because “they’re trying to divert attention away from the investigation” into Trump’s campaign.

“That’s the obvious motive,” the aide said. “The Democrats feel that Nunes has gone rogue, or that he’s trying to undermine the committee because he no longer serves in the top position on this investigation.”

Nunes has called unmaskings “violations of Americans’ civil liberties.” But the House Intelligence Committee, under his leadership, made at least five to six unmasking requests to US spy agencies related to Russia’s election meddling between June 2016 and January 2017, according to The Washington Post. Nunes would have had to sign off on any House Intelligence requests to reveal the identities of US persons mentioned in intelligence reports.
