Brazil’s former President Lula da Silva has ended a 24-hour standoff between his supporters and federal authorities and has turned himself in to begin serving a 12-year sentence on corruption charges, which he is still appealing.

Da Silva had remained inside the Metal Workers Union’s headquarters in Sao Paulo, surrounded by hundreds of supporters, ever since Federal Judge Sergio Moro on Thursday issued a warrant for the 72-year-old’s arrest.

Although he missed the initial deadline to surrender by Friday afternoon, da Silva, known as Lula, handed himself over to authorities on Saturday evening, after the rejection of his final plea to stay out of jail while the appeal was pending.

Earlier, da Silva had addressed his supporters for almost an hour, telling them he was “ready” to obey the law and to accept his prison term. In his 55-minute-long speech, which was broadcast live on television, Lula continued to maintain his innocence. “The police and ‘Car Wash’ investigators lied. The prosecutors lied,” said da Silva. “I don’t forgive them for giving society the idea that I am a thief.”

Announcing his decision to surrender, the politician noted that he will go behind bars so that he can “face them eye-to-eye.”

“The more days they leave me (in jail), the more Lulas will be born in this country,” he added, to a crowd clearly disappointed with his decision.

“Free Lula!” they chanted, before his supporters carried him on their shoulders back into the union building.

Several hours later, he walked out from the union building and surrendered, to be taken to the southern city of Curitiba to begin serving a 12-year sentence for alleged corruption and money-laundering.

Throughout the whole ordeal, Lula has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and declared himself a victim of political persecution. Speaking to Ecuador’s former president Rafael Correa on RT last month, Lula argued that corruption charges have become an “instrument in the moral and ethical fight against opponents.”

Lula said there was a massive media campaign against him and another former Brazilian president, Dilma Rousseff. “There is a conspiracy in Brazil between the media, the judiciary, the prosecution service and police,” said Lula. Arguing that it is in the best interest for his country to disentangle itself from the American influence, Lula told RT that a prosperous Brazil is not in Washington’s interests.

UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor has surrendered to New York police, but has not yet been charged, after taking part in a chaotic attack on a bus carrying fighters following a media event at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

McGregor surrendered to authorities at the NYPD’s 78th Precinct, a police spokesman told Reuters. He has not been immediately charged with anything, as the police investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The 29-year-old decided to turn himself in after attacking the fighters’ bus, apparently hunting for Khabib Nurmagomedov. The incident occurred right after the media day for UFC 223 at the Barclays Center at around 1:30 pm, when the fighters were leaving the venue on a bus.

McGregor, who arrived with his entourage at the very end of the media day, was apparently hunting for Russian UFC star Nurmagomedov, who had a heated confrontation with McGregor’s friend and sparring partner Artem Lobov in the fighters’ hotel just two days ago. The incident was caught by cell phone cameras from different angles.

The Sky rider ceded the overall lead after he faded badly on an ultra-steep final ascent deep in the Pyrenees, losing 22 seconds in less than 500 metres.

Froome struggled across the line in seventh place, his mouth gasping for air as he slid to second overall behind Italy’s Fabio Aru.

“It was certainly a tough day for me in the final. The team did such an amazing job for me all day, but I didn’t have the legs at the end to finish it off,” a weary-looking Froome said later.

“Simple as that. No excuses. I just didn’t have the legs on the final kick. It was brutal, with ramps of over 20 per cent. That’s a really hard finish.”

“I can only say congratulations to [France’s] Romain Bardet for winning the stage and also to Fabio Aru for taking the yellow jersey. The race is certainly on now.”

This is only the second time since Froome’s maiden Tour win in 2013 that the Briton has had to surrender the race lead. Back in the first week of the 2015 Tour, the Briton had briefly ceded the jersey to Germany’s Tony Martin, before moving back into yellow for good once the race hit the mountains. 

But Sky said yesterday they were baffled by Froome’s loss of race form. For hour after hour yesterday (Friday) as the Tour wound its way through the Pyrenees, the Briton’s squad had kept the race firmly under control.

Froome had one scare when he, team-mate Mikel Nieve and – as chance would have it – future race leader Aru skidded off the road and between two lines of caravans on a fast downhill

But the Briton was uninjured and his rivals spread across the road and waited to allow Froome to return to the front end of the action.

Up to a kilometre to go, Sky were still leading the ever-shrinking peloton, with the Briton poised in third place, ready to attack. 

But it never came. Instead, Froome struggled badly as first Aru, resplendent in the green, white and red of Italian national champion and then Bardet charged away. For the first time in this year’s Tour, Sky’s plans seem to have gone seriously awry.

“We’ve lost the yellow jersey by some seconds, so it’s not a disaster, but it still hurts,” said Sky sports director Nico Portal.

“We tried to keep everything under control, kept a good tempo and Chris was feeling good, we were fighting for the stage.”

“We’ve got a very strong team, but the levels are getting closer between the rivals. That’s sport.” 

Froome is far from defeated, as stage winner Bardet pointed out, and Aru’s team, Astana, is far weaker in the mountains than Sky. This is no catastrophe on the scale of, say, 2014, when Froome crashed out of the Tour injured in the first week.

But after Geraint Thomas won the opening time trial, and Froome took over as leader last week, the triple Tour winner has repeatedly said his aim was for Sky to keep the yellow jersey all the way to Paris. 

That will no longer happen, and Froome’s pre-race prediction that “this will be the hardest Tour of all of them to win” is looking increasingly cetain.

Even prior to Froome’s last-minute defeat, Britain’s hopes of a stage win had already suffered one big blow when National Champion Steve Cummings was reeled in on the day’s second last climb, the Peyresourde.

Cummings had hoped to pull off a similar triumph to last year’s long distance epic breakaway triumph through the Pyrenees, but it was not to be.

“Sky kept the gap too small, but once you commit, you commit and in the end I didn’t have the legs,” the veteran rider from the Wirral said. 

Today’s (Friday’s) short,punchy stage through the Pyrenees will now see Froome and Sky looking for chinks in Aru’s armour. But after five years of Sky’s near-continuous domination in the Tour, suddenly there is no telling whether they will succeed.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Las Vegas police say the gunman in a fatal shooting on the Strip who barricaded himself inside a public bus has surrendered peacefully after shutting down the busy tourism corridor for hours.

The standoff began about 11 a.m. Saturday with a shooting that killed one person and injured another. It happened on a double-decker bus on Las Vegas Boulevard near the Cosmopolitan hotel-casino.

University Medical Center spokeswoman Danita Cohen said two people were taken to the hospital after the shooting. She said one died and the other was in fair condition. Police said that person suffered minor injuries.

Las Vegas Police officer Larry Hadfield said just before 3:30 p.m. that the man had a handgun and surrendered without incident. Police did not open fire. Crisis negotiators, robots and armored vehicles were on the scene.

Police said they believe the armed man on the bus is the only suspect and that they have ruled out terrorism or any relationship to an earlier robbery nearby that shut down a part of the Bellagio hotel-casino.

Hadfield said the casino properties in the area have been cooperating by keeping people from exiting through their front doors onto the Strip.
