Ukrainian President Volodyrmyr Zelenskyy seen on March 10, 2022.

  • Russian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is seeking aid from Russian conscripts.
  • He's urged them to "sabotage" Russian forces and report intel to Ukrainian forces.
  • Zelenskyy also urged Russians to surrender and guaranteed their safety.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is moving to overtake Russia from the inside out.

Russia's seven-month effort to conquer its neighbor, Ukraine, has recently been marked by a partial military mobilization, the country's first since World War II, NBC News reported.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's mobilization effort impacts 300,000 reservists — many of whom are going to great lengths to avoid being drafted. Some have even headed to the border, despite facing up to 10 years in prison for desertion.

In a video address late on Friday Ukraine time, Zelenskyy said he seeks to "sabotage" Russia's unprovoked efforts to conquer the country.

"If you get into the Russian army, then sabotage any enemy activity, interfere with any Russian operations, give us all important information about the occupiers: their bases, headquarters, ammunition depots," Zelenskyy said, addressing Russsian conscripts.

The mobilization effort comes after Ukrainian forces reclaimed much of Kharkiv, pushing Russian troops to hide amongst locals or retreat.

Russian troops are reportedly demoralized as their numbers wane.  The Pentagon estimates Russian forces have faced anywhere between 70,000 and 80,000 casualties. Many Russians have grown to condemn the war as protests — and more than 1,000 arrests — ensue across the country.

In a Saturday address, Zelenskyy urged Russian forces to surrender, guaranteeing their safety.

"It is better to surrender to Ukrainian captivity than to be killed by the strikes of our weapons, absolutely fair strikes, as Ukraine defends itself in this war. We defend the brightest — we defend our lives, our children, our freedom," he said, according to his website.

"Russian commanders do not care about the lives of Russians — they just need to replenish the empty spaces left by the dead, wounded, those who fled or the Russian soldiers that were captured," the Ukrainian President added.

British and US officials argue that Putin's latest war efforts — including the mobilization effort and threatening the use of nuclear weapons — could mean his invasion is not going as planned.

  • An editorial in the state-run China Daily paper said on Friday that China will not “surrender” in the trade war against the US.
  • “The Trump administration should not be mistaken that China will surrender to the US demands. It has enough fuel to drive its economy even if a trade war is prolonged.”
  • Representatives from both sides are due to meet again soon to discuss a potential resolution to the ongoing dispute.

SHANGHAI (Reuters) – China will not buckle to US demands in any trade negotiations, the major state-run China Daily newspaper said in an editorial on Friday, after Chinese officials welcomed an invitation from Washington for a new round of talks.

China and the United States are set to return to the table with the threat of new US tariffs looming after Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin extended the invitation to counterparts in Beijing.

US psy-ops vision: Leaflets that cry ‘surrender now!’ as they rain down on enemy troops https://briefnews.eu/us-psy-ops-vision-leaflets-that-cry-surrender-now-as-they-rain-down-on-enemy-troops/ https://briefnews.eu/us-psy-ops-vision-leaflets-that-cry-surrender-now-as-they-rain-down-on-enemy-troops/#respond Fri, 29 Jun 2018 17:15:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-psy-ops-vision-leaflets-that-cry-surrender-now-as-they-rain-down-on-enemy-troops/

The US may soon add talking leaflets to their psychological warfare arsenal. The devices would play pre-recorded 30-second messages to whoever picks them up and may even soon listen back to the response they get.

A prototype of a weaponized version of a musical greeting card has been developed by the US Special Operations Forces Command, or US SOCOM, which unveiled it at an industry conference in Tampa, Florida, Defense One reported. The military now wants to find a partner, who would pick up the project and mass-produce the leaflets.

Dropping in sound messages rather than written ones could be quite useful when targeting illiterate people with whatever the US military want them to hear.

A letter screaming threats at you may be quite terrifying, as any Harry Potter fan can attest to after watching Ron Weasley receiving a ‘howler’ during his second year at Hogwarts.

But the leaflets will not only be used to intimidate enemy soldiers into defecting. The US military say they can, for example, be used to warn civilians about an incoming airstrike.

The final version that SOCOM envisions is a sheet about four times thicker than regular paper containing flexible micro-circuitry, including a speaker and a PV-battery. The publication speculates that the electronic part may be based on graphene, a conductive ultra-thin form of carbon that may revolutionize production of electronic devices in the future.

The US military is also thinking about including advanced features like an ability to serve as a communication device by listening back to what the recipient’s reaction is. They are also considering building in a biometric identifier to deliver individually tailored messages.

On Friday morning, a gunman armed with two guns opened fire at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas. At least 10 people were killed and another 10 were injured.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott called the shooting “one of the most heinous attacks that we’ve ever seen in the history of Texas schools,” and described the suspect, 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, as “evil.”

The Santa Fe High School shooting comes just months after another massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February, in which 17 people were killed in Parkland, Florida. That shooting, as have many others, reignited a nationwide discussion over gun rights and gun control.

Here’s a timeline of how the attack in Santa Fe, Texas, unfolded on Friday:

Pagourtzis was found with a shotgun and a .38-caliber revolver — weapons that were legally owned by his father. Police also discovered a journal that contained the plans for his attack and suicide.

He is being held without bond on a capital murder charge.

First group of militants surrender arms & leave East Ghouta after Russia-brokered talks https://briefnews.eu/first-group-of-militants-surrender-arms-leave-east-ghouta-after-russia-brokered-talks/ https://briefnews.eu/first-group-of-militants-surrender-arms-leave-east-ghouta-after-russia-brokered-talks/#respond Sat, 10 Mar 2018 03:31:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/first-group-of-militants-surrender-arms-leave-east-ghouta-after-russia-brokered-talks/ The first group of militants have surrendered their arms and left East Ghouta as an increasing number of rebel fighters in Syria seek to disassociate themselves from Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists, the Russian military has announced.

“Certain representatives of illegal armed groups have intensified attempts to get in touch with the Syrian government forces and the Russian Center for Reconciliation with the aim of discussing their separation from the banned terrorist group Jabhat al-Nusra,” Major General Yury Yevtushenko, the head of the Reconciliation Center in Syria, said in a statement on Friday.

Efforts to separate the so-called moderate opposition fighters from jihadists continue in the Damascus suburb of Eastern Ghouta. The Syrian government established a humanitarian corridor which remains open to both civilians and militants who are willing to lay down their arms.

The first group of 13 militants used the gateway to leave the rebel-controlled Damascus suburb via Muhayam al-Wafideen corridor overnight. Video of the exodus under government watch shows fighters carrying their belongings and boarding vehicles to head to Idlib. Yevtushenko attributed the militant surrender to the “lengthy talks” held by the reconciliation center’s officers and jihadist groups.

No provocations followed the exit of militants, the general said, adding that those who have surrendered will be transported to Idlib, while negotiations continue regarding the surrender of other militants. The news of militants’ surrender coincided with a statement by the Jaysh Al-Islam group, which allegedly agreed to release Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) fighters from their prisons and send them towards Idlib as well.

The situation in East Ghouta remains tense, Yevtushenko said, stressing that terrorists continue shelling civilian areas of Damascus and targeting those who are trying to flee the terrorist enclave. “The attacks are carried out even during the humanitarian pauses,” the general said, noting that none of the civilians managed to safely exit the terrorist-controlled areas in the past day.

The situation is getting so dire that people are prepared to flee by bypassing the corridors which are targeted by the militants, Yevtushenko said, citing reports received through the Russian Centre’s hotline.

Despite tensions in East Ghouta, the Russian Centre for Reconciliation has ensured “safe and unimpeded delivery” of the United Nations-Syrian Arab Red Crescent humanitarian convoy on Friday. The convoy of 13 trucks delivered 74 tons of food and medical supplies to East Ghouta’s Douma, which lies just 10 km north-east of the center of Damascus.

“Teams from ICRC, Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) and UN in Eastern Ghouta delivered 2,400 food parcels that can sustain 12,000 people for one month, as well as 3,248 wheat flour bags,” the aid agency told RT in a statement. “The 13-truck delivery was part of a convoy that could not be fully unloaded on 5 March due to the security situation.”

“The needs of people remains massive,” Ralph El Hage, a representative from the Red Cross told RT. “You have medical needs, you need access to a good source of food, you also need to have access to clean water.”

Currently, the priority remains the delivery of medical supplies and food aid to the militant-controlled areas. SARC is currently waiting for “security guarantees” from the warring sides to deliver more supplies to the civilian population, El Hage added.

A Russia-backed ceasefire came into effect in Syria’s Eastern Ghouta late last month, following the UN Security Council resolution which called for a 30-day ceasefire across Syria. It envisions mutually agreed humanitarian pauses for aid deliveries and evacuation of civilians, through the specially established humanitarian corridor. However, the militants ignored the agreement and continue shelling Damascus and firing at those trying to leave the area even during those pauses. An estimated 400,000 people remain trapped in besieged Eastern Ghouta since 2013.

Hillary Clinton cries ‘Russians are coming,’ accuses Trump of ‘surrender’ https://briefnews.eu/hillary-clinton-cries-russians-are-coming-accuses-trump-of-surrender/ https://briefnews.eu/hillary-clinton-cries-russians-are-coming-accuses-trump-of-surrender/#respond Thu, 01 Mar 2018 01:40:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hillary-clinton-cries-russians-are-coming-accuses-trump-of-surrender/ Former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is raising a cry of alarm that the “Russians are still coming” and accusing President Donald Trump of doing nothing to defend the upcoming US elections.

Though the US media and political establishment gave Clinton a 98 percent chance to become president in 2016, she lost to Trump – and she has blamed the loss on former FBI Director James Comey, WikiLeaks and “the Russians,” including President Vladimir Putin personally.

“I say this as a former Secretary of State and as an American: the Russians are still coming,” Clinton tweeted on Wednesday. She said that the US intelligence community wants “Trump to act” but he has continued to “ignore and surrender.”

Clinton posted a link to a Washington Post article on Tuesday’s testimony by Admiral Mike Rogers, the head of the US Cyber Command and the NSA, to the Senate Armed Services Committee. Rogers said that Trump has not granted him any new authorities or capabilities to attack Russian cyber operations ahead of the midterm elections in November.

“I haven’t been granted any, you know, additional authorities, capacity and capability,” he told Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-New Hampshire).

Having originally followed Clinton’s lead in accusing Russia of outright “hacking” the election, Democrats have since whittled their accusations down to “meddling” and “influencing,” to the point where no one actually knows who did what to whom or when. That has not stopped the US intelligence apparatus and the media from breathlessly speculating about the “Russian threat,” though.

In addition to blaming Russia for losing the White House race, Clinton has pointed her finger at social media. On Monday, she retweeted a claim that Facebook charged her campaign far more than Trump’s for advertising, adding that something needs to be done about social networks’ impact on US elections.

“We owe it to our democracy to get this right, and fast,” she said.

While diehard Clinton supporters were quick to believe reports that Facebook overcharged her campaign by a factor of 200, one Facebook executive moved quickly to counter such claims, releasing statistics that showed otherwise.

Trump’s campaign “paid slightly higher CPM prices on most days rather than lower as has been reported,” Facebook executive Andrew Bosworth said Tuesday, referring to her costs per thousand (CPM) impressions.

“Prices depend on factors like size of audience and campaign objective. These campaigns had different strategies,” Bosworth added. “Given the recent discussion about pricing we’re putting this out to clear up any confusion.”

Facebook is willing to share more information, but will need permission from the campaigns, Bosworth said.

WE’VE GOT A DEAL: Government shutdown looks set to end as Democrats surrender https://briefnews.eu/weve-got-a-deal-government-shutdown-looks-set-to-end-as-democrats-surrender/ https://briefnews.eu/weve-got-a-deal-government-shutdown-looks-set-to-end-as-democrats-surrender/#respond Mon, 22 Jan 2018 17:30:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/weve-got-a-deal-government-shutdown-looks-set-to-end-as-democrats-surrender/ mcconnell schumer ryanAndrew Harnik/AP Images

  • The Senate is set to clear a procedural hurdle and allow a funding bill to reopen the government to move forward.
  • The deal was reached after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell committed to bring a bill to codify the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) to the Senate floor.
  • The House will need to vote on the measure in order for the bill to go to President Donald Trump to sign.

The Senate was set to clear a key procedural hurdle on a deal to fund the government on Monday, taking a large step toward ending the federal government shutdown.

The cloture vote, which allows the funding bill to move forward without a filibuster, looked likely to clear the 60-vote threshold with support from both parties.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats will vote for the upcoming bill during a speech on the Senate floor.

“The Republican leader and I have come to an arrangement,” Schumer said. “We will vote today to reopen the government.”

The deal will keep the government funded until February 8, rather than the February 16 deadline in the original House-passed funding bill that was rejected in the Senate on Friday.

The House needs to vote on the bill will before President Donald Trump can sign it to reopen the government.

The impasse was broken after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell agreed to have a vote on a bill to codify the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) immigration program. Securing a vote on the DACA issue was a key priority for Democrats.

It’s unclear, however, whether House GOP leadership made any commitments to hold such a vote, potentially scuttling movement on DACA. McConnell previously promised Republican Sen. Jeff Flake there would be a DACA vote by the end of January, which does not look likely.

Schumer said that if McConnell does not hold a good faith vote on the DACA issue by the February 8 deadline, the Republican leader “will have breached the trust” of Senate Democrats.

“The Republican majority now has 17 days to keep the Dreamers from being deported,” Schumer said, in reference to DACA recipients.

The program will expire on March 5, potentially leaving nearly 700,000 unauthorized immigrants who came to the US as minors at risk of deportation.

The bill will also extend funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for six years. CHIP funding technically expired in September.

Trapped ISIS fighters must ‘choose between death and surrender’ as US-backed forces close in https://briefnews.eu/trapped-isis-fighters-must-choose-between-death-and-surrender-as-us-backed-forces-close-in/ https://briefnews.eu/trapped-isis-fighters-must-choose-between-death-and-surrender-as-us-backed-forces-close-in/#respond Thu, 26 Oct 2017 12:44:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trapped-isis-fighters-must-choose-between-death-and-surrender-as-us-backed-forces-close-in/ Surrendering ISIS fightersBrett McGurk via Twitter

As Iraqi forces close in on the Islamic State’s final patches of territory, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has given the once-powerful terror group an ultimatum: Surrender or die.

“Daesh members have to choose between death and surrender,” Abadi said, using a derogatory term for ISIS.

ISIS has suffered severe territorial losses and bell weather defeats in the past month, as a US-led bombing campaign and US-backed and trained forces ground the group down to its last legs.

At a Department of Defense briefing on Tuesday, the top US general, Joseph Dunford, said that at ISIS’s height, “we saw as many as 40,000 foreign fighters from 120 different countries.”

At the same briefing, Brett McGurk the special presidential envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter ISIS, said the flow of foreign fighters had nearly stopped, and the group’s funding is at its “lowest level ever.”

McGurk pointed to ISIS’ own propaganda, which “about a year ago” stopped advising foreign fighters to come to Syria as the group was losing badly on the ground.

ISIS used to hold significant cities and oilfields in Iraq and Syria, but recent US-backed offensives have relegated them to a section of desert along the Iraqi-Syrian border, effectively trapping them.

Initially, after declaring the “caliphate,” or territory under ISIS’ ultra-hardline Islamic control in 2014, ISIS fighters proved potent on the battlefield rolling back Iraqi security forces. But after a US-led intervention that ultimately gained support from 75 countries, the terror group has nearly imploded.

The group carried out high profile attacks abroad, notably killing civilians in public places in London, Paris, and Brussels, but acting Department of Homeland Security chief Elaine Duke credits the US-led offensive keeping them on the run with preventing further attacks.

But after around 70,000 ISIS fighters have been killed, the group once bent on dying for its cause has begun to surrender en masse.

McGurk reported that ISIS surrendered in “large numbers” after the fall of its Syrian capital of Raqqa.

On Thursday, the Red Cross reported that it had gained access to the families of ISIS fighters in territories they once ruled.

ISIS fighters, once bent on martyrdom, surrender en masse from last Iraqi stronghold https://briefnews.eu/isis-fighters-once-bent-on-martyrdom-surrender-en-masse-from-last-iraqi-stronghold/ https://briefnews.eu/isis-fighters-once-bent-on-martyrdom-surrender-en-masse-from-last-iraqi-stronghold/#respond Mon, 09 Oct 2017 10:54:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/isis-fighters-once-bent-on-martyrdom-surrender-en-masse-from-last-iraqi-stronghold/ ISIS detainees MosulFelipe Dana/Associated Press

When US-backed Iraqi security forces and Iranian Shia militias cleared’ ISIS’s final Iraqi stronghold in Hawijah, they met with weak resistance and a massive surrender from a once-fearsome army.

In 2016 and 2015, ISIS carried out suicide attacks around the globe at a historic rate.

The terror group, founded in June 2014, demands that its militants fight or die, and often sends young men and even children on suicide bombing missions.

But as the group weakens on the ground, it seems its adherents have lost some backbone.

A US Department of Defense release on the battle for Hawijah cites “many sources reporting more than 1,000 terrorists surrendered.”

Unlike the battle for Mosul, ISIS’s former Iraqi capital, the terror group “put up no fight at all, other than planting bombs and booby traps,” Kurdish officials told the New York Times.

Strikingly, the same officials reported that ISIS commanders have ordered their fighters to turn themselves in, on the grounds that the Kurds will take prisoners, while other opponents would be harsher.

After three years of the most hardline imaginable Islamic rule over wide swaths of Iraq, the Iraqi Security Forces fighting ISIS have admitted engaging in acts of savagery against defeated ISIS fighters.

In July, Iraqi officers said they took part in extrajudicial killings of many unarmed ISIS fighters, with one vowing a “slow death” as revenge for killing his father.

Iraq Syria ISIS map october 2017 hawijahLive UA Map

During the fight for Mosul, some ISIS militants informed on their own ranks to the Iraqi forces, leading to the group’s humiliating defeat in the city.

With ISIS suffering defeat after defeat on the ground, the group has upped the aggression of its media operation in an attempt to save face. Recently the group released audio it claimed came from its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who has been repeatedly rumored killed or injured by airstrikes.

In the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in recent US history, ISIS also made the dubious claim that Stephen Paddock, the gunman, was one of its followers.

US officials have shot this claim down, and ISIS’s claims do not match evidence which has since emerged on Paddock’s preparation for the attack.

In its early months and years, ISIS enjoyed a surge of battlefield victories. They had political support in Sunni Muslim areas, where many felt disenfranchised by Iraq’s Shia-run government.

But since then it has been pounded for years with airstrikes by a US-led coalition, and a wide range of militias and national armies on the ground.

With the fall of Hawijah, only a small strip of territory along Syria’s border remains in ISIS’s control.
